Rating of the best CPUs for gaming PCs in 2019 / Habr

In 2019, the desktop processor market became interesting. For many years, Intel dominated here, but AMD released Ryzen 7 — direct competitors to the Intel i7 models. Then a series of blows Ryzen 3 and 5 against Intel i3 and i5 — and finishing off a competitor with sledgehammers Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X. However, these monsters are not for the gaming market, but for other HEDT applications.

With 24/32-core Threadripper, AMD has become a technology leader. Intel has nothing to say about the fastest AMD processors, but is trying to compete in the second tier of cheaper CPUs. To do this, Intel had to drastically cut prices. Intel also continues to manipulate its compiler, which slows down the execution of programs on alternative processors (see below in the section «Cheating the Intel Compiler»).

What now? What are the best gaming CPUs in different price categories? In late November-early December 2019, AnandTech, WePC, PC Gamer, Digital Trends, Tom’s Hardware, PC World published their recommendations. Let’s see what happens on the gaming scene?

What are we waiting for Intel Comet Lake?

These recommendations try to find the best balance between price and performance.

The winner in the top category is a different story. Intel announced that 9The 900KS will only be available for a limited time. An octa-core CPU up to 5 GHz can now be found on sale for about $600, and Intel’s wholesale price in quantities of 1,000 units is $513. Experts warn that the chip gets very hot (heat dissipation up to 172 W at peak), it is better to fork out for an expensive cooling system.

3DNews writes that the whole story with the appearance of the Core i9-9900KS on the market from the very beginning causes a feeling of deja vu. «Why? Yes, it’s very simple, we saw similar events sixteen years ago, when AMD released its revolutionary Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX processors with the Hammer microarchitecture. Then, in order to rebuff these novelties, Intel urgently organized the release of Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processors equipped with a 2-megabyte L3 cache, hastily converted from Xeon MP server chips. Now, of course, the situation is developing in a slightly different scenario, but the overall plot outline has remained the same. Not being able to symmetrically respond to the competitor’s daring encroachments, Intel gets out as best it can and instead of a new product family offers temporary flagship «quick response» processors. Core i9The -9900KS is just such a hand-crafted answer to third-gen Ryzen.»

It’s clear why the Core i9-9900KS is a limited edition. This is a special overclocked version of the Core i9-9900K, built on selected semiconductor chips that are capable of operating at even higher clock speeds. In this case, 5 GHz. By definition, there are a limited number of «selected» crystals.

Alternatively, look at the basic i9-9900K (wholesale price $488) or a competitor from AMD — the flagship Ryzen 9 3950X processor based on the Zen 2 architecture. Although it costs more ($749), it is already a new generation processor: a 16-core CPU manufactured using a 7 nm process, and not the old intel 14 nm.

On single-threaded performance tests, the Ryzen 9 3950X may be inferior to Intel processors, but due to the greater number of cores, it efficiently performs other tasks in the background. This makes sense: today, many gamers run chat programs with colleagues, video broadcasts, and other applications in parallel. So not only performance in games is important, but also multithreading.

The Ryzen 9 3950X went on sale on November 25, 2019 (November 30 in Japan), and immediately caused an unprecedented stir. Japanese media reported that stores lined up hours before the opening, and stocks of the Ryzen 9 3950X sold out on the first day.

In addition to the top category, AMD processors are recommended in all other segments, starting with the cheapest, dual-core AMD Athlon 3000G with integrated Vega 3 graphics at the price of everything $49.

CPU hierarchy in games

PC Gamer has published a performance rating of different CPUs in games with a top-end RTX 2080 Ti graphics card.

Other results

Below is the CPU hierarchy according to Tom’s Hardware. Processors sorted by gaming performance. Unfortunately, recent changes in tests and security patches for the CPU have affected the results, so there are a lot of gaps in the table. For many CPUs, old results are shown, where the maximum result corresponds to a score of 100%, and the rest were evaluated relative to it.

In general, the table is sorted by average performance in games (there were eight games in the test set), some cheaper processors cost more than more expensive ones.

Also includes an app performance rating. The test set included archivers, HandBrake, Blender and Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.

However, the results of benchmarks should be treated critically.

Intel optimizations

Tests and benchmarks of processors are a topic for a separate discussion. The fact is that many programs can indeed run slower on AMD processors, because they are compiled with the Intel compiler or use highly optimized Intel libraries, which greatly slow down the execution of programs on alternative processors.

The reason is that the compiler or library generates multiple versions of the code, each optimized for a particular processor and instruction set, such as SSE2, SSE3, etc. The system includes a function that determines the type of processor it is running on. and selects the optimal code path for that processor. This is called the CPU manager. However, the Intel Processor Manager not only checks which instruction set is supported by the processor, but also checks the vendor ID string. If the vendor string says «GenuineIntel», then it uses the optimal code path. If the processor is not from Intel, then in most cases it will run the slowest version of the code, even if the processor is fully compatible with the best version .

This situation has been discussed since 2005, but Intel still refuses to change the CPU manager. If the company officially announced that its compiler is compatible only with Intel processors, then there would be no complaints about it. The problem is that they are trying to hide what is happening. Many software developers believe that this compiler is compatible with AMD processors, and this is actually the case, although, unbeknownst to the programmer, it uses a «biased» CPU manager that selects code degradation whenever it sees a non-Intel processor. If programmers knew this fact, they would probably use a different compiler. Who wants to create software that doesn’t run very well on AMD processors?

However, the problem still exists. Some experts are of the opinion that the biased CPU manager from the compiler affects the results of standard benchmarks, which compare the performance of Intel and AMD processors.

For example, comparing the performance of Matlab on Threadripper 3970X and Cascade Lake X processors shows a significant superiority of Intel processors.

The problem turned out to be that Matlab uses Intel’s Math Kernel Library (MKL), which deliberately slows down code execution on AMD processors. If it sees an Intel processor, it deliberately switches to the slowest SSE1 instruction set, regardless of which more efficient instruction sets the processor supports (AVX2, etc. ).

If you force MKL_DEBUG_CPU_TYPE=5 to be set in the system environment variables, then the speed of calculations on AMD processors increases several times.

It is important that software developers and game developers are aware of the issue and use Intel compilers carefully by reviewing x86 and x86-64 processor optimization tutorials.

In addition, Pentium has blocked support for AVX instructions, which can also play a cruel joke on «budget» chips. Recent Example — Assassin’s Creed Odyssey , which requires a processor that supports a set of vector instructions for stable operation. Responding to complaints from owners of older CPUs, the developers from Ubisoft promise to present a patch that allows you to play on chips without AVX, but so far without a specific release date for such a patch. A lot more room for maneuver for those who plan to build a PC on AMD. The basic chips with Zen architecture — Athlon 200GE have already gone on sale. Of course, at the start, the price is higher than the declared $55, but even with the initial $75, this model has every chance to gain a foothold in its niche. No, we will not recommend it for a gaming system, although we will test it in such an incarnation on occasion. AMD has more interesting options for budget gamers.

First of all it is Ryzen 3 1200 (3.1/3.4 GHz). The Zen first wave processor is still on sale and at $90 now looks like an offer you can’t refuse. Judge for yourself: four full-fledged cores, 8 MB of L3 cache, solder under the lid. Relatively low initial frequencies can be «corrected» at your discretion if you have a motherboard based on at least the AMD B350 chipset.

An interesting alternative here may be Ryzen 3 2200G (3.5/3.7 GHz), especially if you are building the system in stages and have not yet decided on a video card. The Vega 8’s integrated graphics won’t replace a discrete adapter, but it’s still capable of something in games, especially in modes with low graphics quality settings. The model with the built-in GPU has also risen in price a little over the past month ($125), but against the backdrop of price chaos with Intel chips, a $10 price increase does not spoil the mood.

On the other hand, if you are willing to spend about $130 on a processor and in any case will buy a discrete graphics card for games, the Ryzen 5 1400 (3.2 / 3.4 GHz) looks very promising. This is also a 4-core processor, but its position in multi-threaded tasks is strengthened by support for SMT technology. The 4/8 configuration looks very attractive, especially in the context of the base gaming system. The relatively low operating frequencies of the processor are easy to increase, given the unlocked multiplier and the frequency potential of the Summit Ridge chips. Often, 3.6-3.8 GHz is conquered without additional effort. If you have free $30, we highly recommend pulling up to the Ryzen 5 1400.

Against the background of the current cost of AMD chips, the price of $200 for the Core i3-8100 looks absolutely unjustified. But this is the only opportunity to strengthen the position of the Intel platform. In desperation, it would be possible to calculate options with processors of previous generations, but the models of the Kaby Lake family have also risen significantly in price. For example, the price of the Core i5-7400 jumped from $180 to $250, so it’s definitely not an option for a budget gaming platform. Quad-core processors for such money are no longer needed in principle.

We really like the idea of ​​using series Radeon RX 570 graphics cards in our base gaming systems. Models with 4 GB of memory on board are already offered from $200. Although, choosing from the most affordable solutions of this family, it is easy to get into old stocks of «miner» devices with a warranty period reduced to 3 months. There are situations when online stores take such devices under their wing, offering extended warranty service, but in such cases, you should definitely clarify this point with the seller before buying.

For similar money based on NVIDIA GPUs, you can only buy GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB . This is a noticeably more economical model (75 W vs. 120 W), but its performance is much lower. Often we are talking about one and a half times the advantage of the Radeon RX 570 4 GB. Needless to say, how valuable the extra frames/c are for an entry-level gaming system.

If the budget is still rigidly fixed, you can limit yourself to buying GeForce GTX 1050 3 GB for $160-170, although the range of these devices is very small, and 2 GB versions are offered at virtually the same prices.

It’s nice to see the cost of SSDs drop. Yes, there are no more abrupt collapses here, but even a gradual price reduction allows you to save your budget or look towards more capacious models. Surprisingly, the most affordable SSD with a capacity of 120 GB can be bought even for $25, and for $30 you can already choose from models of well-known brands. The drive is definitely not the device on which you should save a lot and, if possible, it is better to look towards a larger SSD, but even with a limited budget, you can significantly improve the responsiveness of your system. A basic gaming PC, and indeed any system without an SSD, is already hard to imagine. It is possible, but not necessary.

The sharp increase in prices has affected not only the basic Intel chips, but also the mid-range processors have noticeably risen in price. Instead of the previous $215 for the Core i5-8400 , you will have to pay about $290. Now for $200+ you can only buy a Core i3-8100, but we exclude such a possibility for an optimal gaming configuration. For a PC of this class, at least a 6-core processor is required. You can wait until the CPUs get cheaper, but now no one can predict the exact timing of the price thaw. I would like to hope for at least a minimal rollback, because in Ukraine the jump was very sharp, but so far there are no prerequisites even for this. There is a shortage of processors in retail, so prices have been at a very high level for more than two weeks.

Obviously, in the wake of the shortage of Intel processors, merchants decided to gradually raise prices for AMD chips. Over the past month, the cost of Ryzen 5 2600 has increased from $185 to $205. Against the backdrop of the rampant change in price tags for CPUs from Intel, this already seems like an easy prank, but the fact itself is unpleasant. In such a situation, you can either accept and slightly increase the budget or look at more affordable options. Fortunately for the AMD platform, there are some very interesting offers. First up is the Ryzen 5 1600X , which is now easily available for $170. Already in the basic version, this CPU has a more aggressive frequency formula — 3.6 / 4.0 GHz, versus 3.4 / 3.9 GHz for the Ryzen 5 2600. True, due to minimal internal optimizations and more active dynamic overclocking, under multi-threaded load in normal modes, these will be chips approximately equal in performance.

In addition, it is worth recalling that the first generation Ryzen processors, marked with the “X” index, are shipped without a cooling system. That’s why an extra $20-30 for a decent air cooler actually cancels out the difference in price. If it is still important to save 500–700 UAH, you can look towards Ryzen 5 1600 (3.2/3.6 GHz). They are also offered for around the same $170, but come with a base cooler that will do the trick for the first time. True, it is desirable for the younger 6-core AMD to tweak the operating frequencies, and in this case, the capabilities of the starting cooler may not be enough. And here we are back to the fact that the original idea with the Ryzen 5 2600 is good in every way. For an accelerated version of the Ryzen 5 2600X (3.6 / 4.2 GHz) they ask for about $ 240, and this is already the territory of the basic 8-core Ryzen 7 1700 .

The shortage of Intel chips is a good opportunity for AMD to improve its position in the processor market. There are even suggestions that the company could take up to 30% of the desktop niche. However, these are overly optimistic forecasts. In some countries, the popularity of AMD processors has indeed increased significantly, especially in the “self-collection” segment, when the processor is bought at retail. An example of local success of a developer in the German market is often given. However, on a global scale, AMD’s achievements are still more modest. According to the results of the second quarter of this year, the company occupied about 12.3% of the desktop systems market. The share continues to grow, but when a company manages to win back 1–2% in a quarter, it is considered very successful.

In contrast to the retail market, large OEMs do not yet feel a significant shortage of Intel processors, so they are in no hurry to massively transfer their systems to the AMD platform. Difficulties with the availability of Intel products will certainly play into the hands of the main competitor, but we are not talking about the cardinal limits of the market yet.

Choosing a video card for optimal configurations is now a pleasure. It’s a rare case when solutions from AMD and NVIDIA, similar in their capabilities, are also very close in price. For $300+ you can choose solid options like Radeon RX 580 8GB and GeForce GTX 1060 6GB . The main role in the choice is already played by the established preferences of the products of a particular manufacturer. Of course, the architectural features of both devices will affect different games, but they are equal competitors. And in general, video cards of this class offer good performance for Full HD mode with medium-high quality settings.

We are expecting an update of the AMD lineup soon. The network is already literally flooded with rumors about the future release of video cards based on 9 chips0022 Polaris 30 . Presumably, no architectural revelations should be expected. The developer will transfer chips from 14 to 12-nanometer process technology, increasing clock speeds. If for conditional Radeon RX 670/680 it is possible to increase performance by 10-15%, simultaneously reducing power consumption and maintaining the price, then AMD solutions in the middle segment will become even more attractive.

A few days ago, Intel hosted the Fall Desktop Launch event to showcase the 9th Generation Core processors. Moreover, not only Coffee Lake Refresh chips were shown, the Basin Fall platform was also updated. For LGA2066, the manufacturer offered a whole bunch of new CPUs.

For a progressive gaming system, the mass LGA1151, as well as the processors relevant to it, are more interesting. As expected, initially Intel offers three top models. The flagship of the new line — Core i9-9900K — received 8 computing cores, has support for Hyper-Threading and 16 MB L3 cache. Despite the increased number of cores, the manufacturer also uses an aggressive frequency formula — 3.6 / 5.0 GHz. Up to a symbolic 5 GHz, the processor accelerates when loaded on 1-2 cores, while when loaded on all blocks, the chip runs at an impressive 4.7 GHz. Despite the increase in cores, cache volume and high frequencies, the chip remains within the 95W TDP. Which is even somewhat surprising, given that Coffee Lake Refresh is made using a repeatedly improved 14 ++ nm manufacturing process. Moreover, the new CPUs have a decent frequency potential.

Enthusiasts have already managed, using liquid nitrogen for cooling, to “fire up” the top model up to 6.9 GHz with all active cores. At the same time, overclockers claim that chips work at 5.3 GHz when using CBO and increasing the supply voltage to 1.4 V. There is an endless field for experiments here.

Priced at $488, Intel calls the Core i9-9900K «the world’s best gaming processor.» Let not everything be so clear, but if the retail price is close to the announced value, it will be an enviable candidate for a progressive configuration. However, the purchase of a 6-core Core i7-8700K now costs about the same amount. New chips at the start of sales will certainly cost more.

The refusal to support Hyper-Threading in Core i7 chips did not come as a surprise during the presentation of new processors. Morally, we were ready for this even after the specifications leaked to the network, but the idea itself looks very controversial. Presented Core i7-9700K also has 8 processing cores, but, unlike the flagship of the new line, the processor does not support HT, and therefore can simultaneously process up to 8 data streams. It will be interesting to compare the real capabilities of this chip with those of the Core i7-8700K with a functional formula of 6/12. Without a doubt, there will be various nuances. In the meantime, we can say that the Core i7-9The 700K has a frequency formula of 3.6/4.9 GHz, is equipped with 12 MB of L3 and is also within the 95 W TDP. The recommended price of this model is $373.

Another representative of the new processor wave — Core i5-9600K — may be more interesting for an optimal gaming configuration. This is a 6-core chip with a frequency formula of 3.7 / 4.6 GHz, 9 MB L3 and a TDP of 95 watts. Hyper-Threading technology was not originally used for desktop CPUs of the Core i5 line, so there are no functional losses here. The chip with the unlocked multiplier was priced at $262.

A feature common to all Coffee Lake Refresh chips is the use of solder as an internal thermal interface. Under pressure from the public, Intel gave in, returning solder for desktop chips after a seven-year hiatus. Of course, numerous user reviews are just one of the factors, the thermal conductivity of the interface really needed to be improved, especially for chips with unlocked multipliers. We hope that the manufacturer’s recommendations not to overclock chips with the «K» index will remain in the past.

The new processors will start shipping on October 19th. Abundance is not to be expected. Alas, but, apparently, the shortage will also be felt for new CPUs, and therefore the cost of processors at the start will be noticeably higher than recommended. The terms of official deliveries of chips for Ukraine have not yet been confirmed by distributors. It remains only to monitor when the items of interest appear in the price lists of local online stores. Until this happens, 9 will be delayed in the progressive configuration.0022 Core i7-8700K (3.7/4.7 GHz). The latter also unpleasantly added to the price. It would seem that there is nowhere to go, but now you will have to pay about $470 for the top Coffee Lake. Saving money on the «neoverklokerskoy» model will not work. The Core i7-8700 (3.2/4.6 GHz) is now only a little cheaper — about $440. Yes, a budget cooler is included with it, but such a trivial blank as part of a powerful gaming system will look ridiculous, and it cools the CPU mediocrely.

Together with the Coffee Lake Refresh processors, the manufacturer also introduced a new top chipset for the LGA1151 platform — Intel Z390 . In terms of functionality, it is minimally different from its predecessor Intel Z370. We can only note the native USB 3.1 Gen2 controller, as well as the integrated Intel Wireless-AC computing logic for wireless communication.

Manufacturers of motherboards have thoroughly prepared for the release of the new chipset, having prepared ten or one and a half diverse models based on the Intel Z390. Devices have already appeared in Ukrainian retail, the assortment is being actively replenished. At the start of sales, prices are expectedly inflated. The cost ranges from $150 to $500+. If you plan to use a board with a top PCH, you can start looking. At the same time, we remind you that the 9th generation Core processors will work on boards with any Intel 3xx series chipset, including the basic Intel h410. You only need to update the BIOS.

Intel Z390 models will of course initially support Coffee Lake Refresh. Manufacturers have configured models for various tasks. The trend is the abundance of USB 3.1 Gen2, RGB lighting and cooling for M.2 drives, top models get OLED indicators, CNVi modules for wireless communication and 5-gigabit Ethernet controllers. Some companies have prepared special models for overclocking records.

If the prospect of updating the firmware to work with Coffee Lake Refresh does not scare you, you can easily choose from the previously presented motherboard models. They have no fundamental differences with the new products, and the prices have already settled down. For the Core i7-8700K, it is logical to look towards devices that are suitable in terms of functionality for Intel Z370 . In this case, there are no restrictions on working with high-speed memory kits, and you can experiment with overclocking the processor at your leisure.

For a progressive gaming system based on the AMD platform, the Ryzen 7 2700X (3.7/4.3GHz) is still the best choice. The top 8-core chip has also risen in price by about $30 over the past month, but against the backdrop of current prices for Intel chips, even the older Pinnacle Ridge model for $380 looks like an opportunity to save money. With availability Ryzen 7 2700 (3.2/4.1 GHz) is no longer a problem, but a slight difference in retail price (~$350) bribes to shell out for a flagship. Nevertheless, it is initially well boosted by the manufacturer, and the bundled Wraith Prism cooler looks more attractive than the base Ryzen 7 2700 cooler. 3 which are now offered at a very attractive price — ~ $ 240. To get closer to the performance of the top Pinnacle Ridge models, you will need to thoroughly boost the CPU, and for this purpose, a board with a powerful VRM is important, as well as an air supercooler or CBO.

The main competitor will react to the release of Coffee Lake Refresh chips only by the price. And even then, if necessary. As you can see, against the backdrop of a shortage of Intel processors, the demand for AMD chips is only increasing, allowing the suppliers of the latter to even “play pranks” by raising the price of those CPUs that have no problems with supplies.

We still trust the proven GeForce GTX 1080 graphics position in the progressive configuration. For $600, you can choose a good option and get decent performance at a reasonable price. GeForce GTX 1080 Ti from official shipments cost over $800. Those who want to understand «grayscale» can get a top-end video card based on Pascal for $700-750, but these are certain risks with a subsequent manufacturer’s warranty.

We’ve already tested the capabilities of the GeForce RTX 2080 by reviewing the original ASUS model as well as the native GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition. This was enough to appreciate the potential of new items based on the Turing graphics architecture. To summarize, in current games, models based on the TU104 offer performance on par with the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. Often with a minimal margin, but in general, the performance of these models is very close. If they had similar price tags, preference would definitely be on the side of the novelty. However, the GeForce RTX 2080 is noticeably more expensive. The range of adapters of this series available in Ukraine is still not very large, but the first models appeared at a price of about $1000. This could be attributed to the starting hype, but the recommended cost of devices based on the TU104 for the US market is $699-799 excluding taxes, and for Ukraine the price of the reference RTX 2080 Founders Edition is declared at the level of 26,990 UAH (~$960). Basic versions should cost less, but there is no reason to expect a significant price reduction.

Video cards with chips based on the Turing architecture have hidden reserves. GPUs contain hardware RT blocks for ray tracing processing and tensor cores for matrix calculations, allowing you to use various deep learning algorithms. Ray Tracing lighting techniques are pleasing to the eye, and DLSS sampling technology can significantly increase performance compared to full-screen anti-aliasing mode with better picture quality. However, such effects have so far been observed only on a few tech demos. There is potential here and a number of developers will use RTX resources in their projects. However, giving away $1000, I would like to immediately see the clear advantages of the devices of the new series, and not invest that kind of money for the future.

As a reminder, we still have GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB in stock. The ultimate graphics card for when an RTX 2080/ GTX 1080 Ti is not enough. Plus 25-30% to the performance of the latter for about $1500. An uncompromising solution for games, if the price tag does not bother.

It would be interesting to see in case GeForce RTX 2070 . Video cards of this line were presented simultaneously with top-end devices, however, the sales start dates were initially shifted to October 17th. The recommended price of the junior model is $499-599 allows you to count on the opportunity to join the RTX without shock price «therapy». If the performance in current games is similar to that of the GeForce GTX 1080, and the extended functionality will be given as a bonus, this will be a reason to release devices based on the GP104.

The situation with AMD’s top graphics frankly is not encouraging. A very weak assortment and often unjustified prices do not add to the attractiveness of the Radeon RX Vega 56/64 . Although here it is not complete without rare, but pleasant surprises. How do you get the opportunity to get a top model for only $530 (at the time of writing)? Although this is rather an exception or, if you like, an «Easter egg» for the regulars of the relevant sections on hotline.
