What is the Difference between Core I5 6th 7th and 8th generations
There are many kinds of the processor which are being made by Intel company, these processors names are as intel core processor, Intel Pentium processor, Intel Celeron processor, Intel Xeon processor, Intel Xeon Phi processor, Intel Itanium processor, intel atom processor, and Intel Quark Soc. These all processors are used in a different electronic device like laptop, desktop, mobile phones, research devices, etc. however, There is a lot of difference between 6th, 7th and 8th generation’s processor of core i5 mostly the difference can observe in its performance, specifications and in features as well.
Figure: What is the Difference between Core I5 6th 7th and 8th generations
However there is also a difference in same core and same generation processors due to late launched with updated version as if we just talk about core i5’s 6th generation its # of cores, max turbo frequency, processor base frequency, and cache storage memory may vary from its every newly launched version in which all launched versions are being known as core i5 6th generation but the same generation may have different specification due to variations in launching dates.
Here is the comparison between 6th generation Intel Core i5 processor, 7th generation Intel Core i5 processor and 8th generation Intel Core i5 processor. If we talk about essentials of these three processors the vertical segment, processor number, lithography and status will be desktop for all, i5-6600, i5-7600K, i5-8600T, and 14 nm and launched will be for all respectively.
Performance of Core I5
If we talk about the performance of these processors then definitely there will be a big difference will be seen, as we know that the new version or new generation is being launched just because of improving the performance of the processor as ultimately the device performance. However, here I will discuss a few things regarding performance comparison. These are the performance differences between 6th, 7th and 8th generation of Core i5 processor.
Memory
In the memory specifications, the discussion about differences in memory will be seen in Max memory size, memory types, Max number of memory channel and Max memory bandwidth. So if we compare the Max memory size of upper three generations the memory size will be 64 GB for the 6th generation, 64 GB for the 7th generation and 128 GB for the 8th generation processors.
There every processor can support different type of memory type however the above processors have and can support the different memory type as 6th generation processor will support DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V type of memory and 7th generation will support DDR4-2133/2400, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V type of memory and 8th generation will support the DDR4-2666 type of memory. The max number of memory channels will be 2 for al above-mentioned generation of core i5 and max memory bandwidth for a 6th generation will be 34. 2 GB/s and for an 8th generation, it will be 42.6 GB/s and there is no one processor which is ECC memory supported.
Processor’s Graphics of Core I5
In the 6th generation, the processor graphics is Intel HD graphics 530, in a 7th generation it rises as Intel HD graphics 630 and in an 8th generation, the HD is be replaced by UHD as Intel UHD graphics 630 due to UHD the graphics support will boost up. The graphics base frequency is 350 MHz for all the above three generations.
The graphics max dynamic frequency is also the same for all three generations as 1.15 GHz, the graphic video max memory is 64 GB for above three and these all are 4k supported. Max resolution for all three above generation is same as 4096*[email protected]
The durability of Core I5
The thermal solution specification for all the above three generations is PCG 2015C (65 W) for 6th and 7th generations and PCG 2015A (35 W) for 8th generation processor. T Junction is 100 °C For 7th and 8th generations and the 6th generation can support T case at 70 °C.
Hence these are few differences in core i5’s 6th, 7th, and 8th generations processors.

The Intel Core i5 Processors
Launched in June 2014, Intel’s latest CPUs are codenamed ‘Haswell’ but are more officially known as 4th Generation Intel Core processors. The familiar i3 /i5 / i7 branding is retained and easily allows customers to identify the budget, mid-range and premium versions respectively. As you might expect, with this new generation of processors comes improved performance and an overall reduction in power requirements, although the highest-performance variants actually consume 13 watts more than their 3rd generation counterparts at full throttle.
Improved on-board graphics
Perhaps the biggest improvement is in the area of embedded graphics. With this new generation of CPUs the graphics are now known as HD 4600 and with the change of name comes about a significant improvement in performance, especially for 3D games and applications. Furthermore, up to three separate displays can now be driven simultaneously, reducing the need for a discrete graphics card where triple-head monitors are required.
Guide to suffix variants
The single-letter suffix on each model of processor denotes whether it can be overclocked (K), or is low-power (S) or ultra-low power (T). Note that ‘power’ in this context refers to electrical power, not computational power. We recommend S or T suffix processors where cool-running / energy saving is required, or K-series processors where maximum performance is desirable and sufficient cooling can be provided accordingly.
Variant performance comparisons
In terms of computational performance, Intel don’t provide official figures for their processors because so much depends on other hardware such as motherboard, type of memory, etc. So instead, we would suggest that potential customers refer to real-world empirical performance benchmarks such as those published by Passmark and quoted / linked to in the specification table below. These allow a simple comparison to be made between the different variants of processors and are based upon the averaged results of many users’ PC systems across the world. An opinion about the relative performance differences between each model of processor can therefore be quickly formed.
Core i5 / Core i7 differences
In essence, Core i5 processors are designed to be more affordable, lower performing versions of the Core i7 parts. There will certainly be some overlap in performance between the highest-end i5 processors and the cheapest i7 versions, but in essence the Core i5 range has a smaller cache (6MB rather than 8MB), a fewer maximum number of threads (4 not 8) and the omission of Hyper-Threading (HT Technology).

Intel Core i5-6200U / i5-6300U 6th Gen ‘Skylake’ Mid-Range Laptop CPUs (Review) – Laptop Processors
The 6th Generation “Skylake” Intel Core i5-6200U, just like its slightly faster i5-6300U sibling, is a mid-range processor for mainstream laptops. This 6th Gen U parts offers better performance than the i3-6010U and are somewhat slower than the i7-6500U from the same CPU series.
Intel Core i5-6200U / i5-6300U 6th Gen Skylake PassMark CPU Benchmark
In comparison to its older 5th Gen “Broadwell” i5-5200U and i5-5300U equivalents, the i5-6200U and i5-6300U “Skylake” are only marginally faster. The same applies to their Intel HD 520 integrated graphics which replaces the HD 5500. On the positive side, the 6th Gen version provides a greater power efficiency and smoother high-resolution video playback, especially 4K content. The i5-6200U / i5-6300U is an excellent choice for the daily home and office tasks and casual gaming. It can be additionally used for more hardware demanding tasks like work in photo and video editing or graphics design programs. If these tasks are the main purpose of using your laptop, systems with a quad-core Intel i7 and preferably a dedicated video card are recommended.
Real World Use Review
We recorded a video (below) showing what performing usual computing tasks looks like on the Intel Core i5-6200U. The i5-6300U performs very similar, with almost unnoticeable boost over the 5200U. We reviewed multitasking, web browsing, video playback, Office document, image and video editing, and gaming capabilities. For the test, we used a Windows 10 Home-based HP Pavilion 15.6″ laptop with the i5-6200U, 6GB of RAM, a mechanical 500GB hard drive at 5,400rpm, and Full HD display. A typical 2015 / 2016 mainstream notebook. Please keep in mind the same CPU could perform somewhat different in other systems, depending on other hardware specs, such as RAM size, single- or dual-channel RAM setups, and storage speed, as well as cooling solution of each laptop.
Web browsing was simply flawless, even when you have multiple data-heavy web pages opened. The same applies to video playback, with some software-related exceptions. CPU usage during Full HD and Ultra HD (4K) video playback was almost unnoticeable, thanks to its hardware-based video decoding capabilites. Exceptions are 4K YouTube video playbacks in Google Chrome browser and 4K playback in VLC media player program, producing video stuttering and very high CPU load of up to 100%. The problem in Chrome can be fixed with h364ify browser extension, while in VLC player you’ll have to tweak video settings to make the playback smoother. As for work in the Office suite, the most popular apps – Word and Excel run perfectly. Although professional photo and video editing remains in the domain of the quad-core Intel chips, the i5-6200U provides decent performance for these tasks, too.
For a list of laptops with the 6th Gen Intel Core i5-6200U “Skylake” CPU, click here. The i5-6300U isn’t used in as many notebook models, but is included in the famous Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet.
Note: The benchmark scores of the listed processors are averages measured across various devices with these processors. The scores and real-world performance of the Intel Core i5-6200U and compared CPUs may vary depending on the notebooks’ other components, settings, cooling, and other factors. However, the benchmark results are good indicators of the processors’ performance.

April 30, 2021
For decades, Intel® has made the most trusted CPUs on the market, but the thicket of model numbers, names, and generations can make it challenging to choose the best Intel Core CPU for your PC.
Below, we explain the Intel processor brands, generations, and models in plain, easy-to-understand English. We’ll also look at naming conventions, so when you see Intel Core™ i3-8145U or Intel Core i7-10510Y, you’ll know exactly what each part of the name means.
We also demystify the Intel CPU generations and “Lake” monikers, and the latest Intel processors – 11th Generation – and how they support the new Evo platform (and why that’s exciting). Finally, we’ll clarify Intel’s Core, Xeon®, Pentium®, and Celeron® processors, with the generations, brand modifiers, and suffixes of each.
For a comprehensive list of all Intel processor model numbers, see the Intel product specs site.
What are Intel processors?
Intel processors are the most popular CPUs for desktops and laptops in the world. They’re offered in a range of model families, with names like Core, Xeon, Pentium, and Celeron. They come in multiple generations like 9th, 10th, and 11th, also called Coffee Lake, Comet/Ice Lake, and Rocket/Tiger Lake.
These household-word processors power most of the PCs on the market, with specific models engineered for enhanced speed, mobility, creative workflows, gaming performance, business news, big data, and other applications.
Intel processor naming conventions
To sift out the differences between the unique Intel CPUs, you have to know the parts of each name. Each processor name has a brand, brand modifier, generation, SKU, and product line. Once you know what each of those mean, you can identify each processor at a glance. Let’s take a look:

- Brand: The overall product line, such as Core, Xeon, Pentium, or Celeron.
- Brand modifier: In the Core brand of Intel chips (and only there), you’ll find a brand modifier such as i3, i5, i7, or i9 after the “Core” name. Higher modifier numbers generally mean better performance and more features. (The Xeon, Pentium, and Celeron brand names don’t have these modifiers. )
- Generation indicator: After the brand and modifier, you’ll find a generation indicator like 9, 10, or 11, closely followed by an SKU number sequence. This indicates when the chip was made. (9th Gen Intel chips came out in 2018-2019, 10th Gen in 2019-2020, and 11th Gen in 2020-2021.)
- SKU: This is a more specific model number within each brand and generation. Generally, a higher model number means a more full-featured processor. But you can’t compare model numbers from one brand to another, such as Core vs Xeon.
- Product line: The product line suffix at the end of each Intel processor name lets you know what each processor is generally meant for. For instance, the “XE” at the end of an Intel Core processor’s name denotes a max-performance desktop chip.
One note about these naming conventions: they’re not dyed in the wool. Only the Core brand has the modifiers, and the SKUs and product lines don’t follow any standardized code that’s easy to tease out from one brand to the next.
Intel processor generations
One of the stickiest parts of Intel processor names is the generations. The good news? It’s easy to grasp, once you see it explained. Techies often talk about 9th Gen, 10th Gen, and 11th Gen processors, and the different “Lake” processor families, like Whiskey, Ice, and Sky. But actually, “lakes,” “generations,” and “microarchitectures” are the same thing.
Each generation delivers significant performance upgrades, increasing productivity and connectivity, such as longer battery life, faster clock speeds at up to 5.3 GHz with Turbo Boost, Intel WiFi 6 (Gig+), Thunderbolt™ 3 technology, and immersive 4K HDR.
Intel Core processors, ranked by generation:
- 8th Generation, released 2017 to 2019; Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake, Whisky Lake
- 9th Generation, released 2018 to 2019; Coffee Lake Refresh (Desktop)
- 10th Generation, released 2019 to 2020; Comet Lake (Desktop), Ice Lake (Mobile)
- 11th Generation, released 2020 to 2021; Rocket Lake (Desktop, Comet Lake Refresh (Desktop), Tiger Lake (Mobile)
What’s the latest Intel processor?
As of early 2021, the latest Intel processor is the 11th Generation Tiger Lake chip for mobile PCs and the 10th Generation Comet Lake processor for desktops. The eagerly-awaited 11th Generation Rocket Lake PC processor from Intel will hit shelves sometime in early to mid 2021.
The 11th Generation of Intel chips is incredibly exciting, because it supports the new Evo platform. That’s not a chip, but a new from-the-ground-up redesign of PC hardware that wakes from sleep in less than 1 second, switches between apps and tabs in a blink, and supports remote workflows like no other machine in history.
1. Intel Core processors
Intel Core processors are Intel’s flagship family of CPUs. First released in 2006, they replaced the popular Pentium line as the standard for high-end processor chips. They’re available in different models like Core i3, i5, i7, i9, and X, and they bring a new generation to market every 1 to 2 years.
As a rule, 1) the higher the Core “i” number, the better the chip; and 2) the newer the generation, the better the chip. So an Intel Core I7 processor will give higher performance than an Intel Core i5 chip, and an 11th Generation Core i9 chip performs better (with more features) than a 10th Generation Core i9 chip.
Intel Core processors, ranked by performance:
11th Generation
- 2021 Rocket Lake; Core i9-11
- 2020 Comet Lake Refresh; Core i7-11, Core i5-11, Core i3-11
10th Generation
- 2019 Comet Lake; Core i9-10
- 2019 Ice Lake; Core i7-10, Core i5-10, Core i3-10
9th Generation
- 2018 Coffee Lake Refresh; Core i9-9, Core i7-9, Core i5-9, Core i3-9
Generally speaking, the higher you go in the table above, the “better” the processor. For instance, 11th Generation Core processors add new enhancements for connectivity, graphics, and AI, creating a much faster, easier-to-use platform with WiFi 6. They’re incredibly thin and do more with less electricity, letting manufacturers like HP create thinner, lighter, cooler, and more powerful laptops than ever before.
Core suffix meanings:
- C: Desktop processor with high-end graphics
- F: High-performance processor used with discrete graphics cards (ex. Gaming)
- H: High-performance graphics
- K: Unlocked for overclocking
- M: Mobile
- Q: Quad-core
- R: Desktop processor, BGA1364 (mobile) package, high-end graphics
- S: Performance-optimized lifestyle
- T: Power-optimized for best desktop computing
- U: Ultra-low power for laptop efficiency
- X: Extreme unlocked for high desktop performance
- Y: Extreme low power
The 11th Generation Intel Core i9 processor is a shockingly fast CPU. See our write-up, What You Should Know About the Intel Core i9 Processor.
2. Intel Xeon processors
Intel Xeon processors are the brand’s line of business CPUs. They have comparable clock speeds to the Core family of processors. Where they shine is their support for ECC error-correcting memory, which is a must for critical computing applications, like financial or scientific computing.
Aside from the “Lake” generation names, Intel dubbed the 2019 model “2nd Generation Xeon,” and the 2020 models, “3rd generation Xeon. ” This has nothing to do with the more broad chip generations like the 10th and 11th Generation. If you have an older machine with a Xeon CPU, don’t worry. The first Xeon processor actually came out in 1998, with new models released regularly since then.
Intel Xeon processor generations:
- Cooper Lake, 2020 to 2021; Xeon Gold, Xeon Platinum
- Comet Lake, 2020 to 2021; Xeon W
- Cascade lake, 2019 to 2020; Xeon Platinum, Xeon Gold, Xeon Silver, Xeon Bronze
- Coffee Lake, 2018 to 2019; Xeon E
Xeon suffix meanings:
The different letter suffixes at the end of the Xeon processor names tell you a little about the chip’s features.
- E: Embedded
- H: Large memory support (up to 1.12 TB per socket)
- HL: Large memory support (up to 4.5 TB)

3. Intel Pentium processors
Intel Pentium processors are mid-to-entry level CPUs that deliver high value at more modest price points than the Core and Xeon processor lines. These chips manage similar clock speeds to the more robust Core chips, keeping prices down by not including premium features like Turbo Boost and HyperThreading. That means if you’re not running processor-guzzling applications for big data or design, a Pentium processor can be an excellent choice.
Intel Pentium processor generations:
Jasper Lake, 2021; Pentium Silver
Comet Lake, 2019 to 2020; Pentium Gold
Tiger Lake (Mobile), 2019 to 2020; Pentium Gold
Coffee Lake, 2018 to 2019; Pentium Gold
- H: High power
- U: Medium power
- T: Low power
A fan favorite for its phenomenal power in a tiny chassis, the HP Slim desktop PC packs an Intel Pentium processor into a “tower” shorter than one foot high and just 3.74 inches wide.
4.
Intel Celeron processors
Intel Celeron processors are a line of desktop and laptop CPUs based on the Pentium 4-core chip. They have less cache memory and reduced speeds, making them a much more affordable choice for those who stick to browser-based activities and non-processor-heavy applications.
The first Intel Celeron processor appeared in 1998, with new generations regularly since then. The newest Celeron processors are the Celeron N4500 and Celeron N5100, with clock speeds of 1.1 GHz and 1.8 GHz, and burst speeds of 2.8 GHz.
