What is the difference between Intel Pentium 4 516 (2.93GHz) and Intel Pentium 4 515 (2.93GHz)?

Somehow we already
tested the Intel Pentium 4 515 (2.93GHz) processors and found that they are no worse than other Intel Pentium 4 processors in overclocking. They have their advantages — since the processors are designed to operate at a frequency of 133 (533) MHz and have a high multiplier, for even motherboards based on the i915 series chipsets, so unloved by overclockers, can be used to overclock them. In addition, their cost is noticeably lower than that of similarly clocked processors on a 200 (800) MHz bus.

There are, of course, some drawbacks: processors lack Hyper-Threading support, in some cases this can be considered a disadvantage, and a low bus frequency affects performance. Even when overclocked to the same frequencies, since the FSB and memory frequencies are lower, the processors will lose to their counterparts, originally designed to operate on a 200 (800) MHz bus. In fairness, it should be noted that the backlog is not very large.

This time we tested three processors Intel Pentium 4 516 (2.93GHz).

Interestingly, for some time now (judging by our news, since May), Intel has changed the marking system for its processors. Compare — on the left is the processor with the new marking, and on the right with the old one.

It is easy to see that the two lines have been swapped. In addition, there is more information, now not only the real frequency is indicated, but also the processor number — this time 516, as well as the category to which the processor belongs — in this case 04A. The last figures will allow you to evaluate the level of power consumption of the processor and not make a mistake when choosing a motherboard that must meet the specified requirements.

Data about our processors, sSpec of which is SL8J9, is not yet available on the Processor Spec Finder website, so we will use the CPU-Z utility to identify them.

As you can see, the difference from the Intel Pentium 4 515 is that with the increase in the processor number by one, we got support for the EM64T technology. In theory, the Intel Pentium 4 516 should also have the Execute Disable Bit technology, as well as processors with the «J» index after the processor number, but there are some doubts here. The document on the Intel site describing the characteristics of processors depending on their number (PDF, 15KB) states that the Intel Pentium 4 505 and 515 processors are no different from the 505J and 515J. This is probably a mistake.

recommendations

To finish talking about the differences, it should be mentioned that the Intel Pentium 4 516 is equipped with the Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2) power saving and overheating protection function, which can be enabled in the motherboard BIOS or using the RightMark CPU Clock Utility. Using the same program, throttling was controlled during processor testing, which was carried out on a system of the following configuration:

  • Motherboard — Asus P5WD2 Premium (i955X), rev. 1.02 BIOS 0422
  • Video card — NVIDIA GeForce 6800GT (16p/6v, 350/1000 MHz)
  • Memory — Corsair TWIN2X1024A-4300C3
  • Hard Drive — Western Digital Raptor WD740GD
  • Cooler — Zalman CNPS7700Cu
  • Thermal Grease — Zalman
  • Power Supply — CoolerMaster RS-450-ACLY (450W)
  • Operating system — WinXP SP2.

The memory frequency was reduced and the «medium» timings were set to 4.0-4-4-12 so as not to limit the overclocking of processors. To begin with, the FSB frequency was set to 180 MHz and the first processor easily passed the test with the S&M 1.7.2 utility with 100% load, but the next bar at 19He has not mastered 0 MHz. Increasing the voltage in the range from the minimum 0.0125 to 0.05 V did not help either — when the temperature reached 65-66 ° C, the system spontaneously went to reboot or a blue screen appeared. As a result, the processor managed only with a frequency of 186 MHz, and it did not require an increase in voltage, and the maximum temperature reached 67 ° C.

The behavior of the second processor coincided with the first one right down to the details, so the result was the same, but the third processor pleased — it passed the tests at FSB 190 MHz.

It’s easy to guess what caused such a success — the nominal voltage of this processor is 1.375 V, while the first two have 1.4 V. However, the achievement is rather doubtful, since the temperature rose to 71.7°C (and this is on an open bench!), And the increase in the bus frequency just 1 MHz no longer allowed to pass the test.

So, we have seen that Intel Pentium 4 516 processors overclock just as well as their brothers. Their cost should not differ from the 515th series, but the 516th is better, because they are guaranteed to be based on the E0 stepping Prescott core and have to more possibilities. It’s not a fact that you will have to use them, but they definitely won’t be superfluous. Thus, if you are not afraid of minor flaws in the form of a lack of Hyper-Threading or slightly lower performance, which we talked about at the beginning of this post, then Intel Pentium 4 516 processors will be an excellent choice! Unless, of course, we forget about the existence of Intel Pentium 4 506 or AMD processors.
