Intel Unleashes 3rd Gen CPU Based on Ice Lake Sp

The

Ice Lake-SP is finally ready for the first time. Intel’s latest server processor will be a debacle to the Intel INTEL Xeon Scalable processor power market, and closes some gaps compared to AMD’s EPYC family.

Intel’s 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable Family, debuted nearly two years ago, only to be epitomized by AMD a few months later. While Intel has so far held the edge in certain workloads and scenarios, AMD’s ability to pack up to 64 cores per socket, combined with features like PCIE 4.0 support, has boosted the company’s server market share. EPYC AMD EPYC EPYC CPU (CODENAME MILAN) debuted back in mid-March and now we have Ice Lake-SP to answer it.

Ice Lake-SP offers up to 40 CPU cores (1.42x increase over the upper lake stage), with TDPS ranging from 85W — 270W. A typical L3 cache allocation is 1.5MB per core per 60MB maximum, although there are a handful of mid-range parts that offer up to 2.25MB/core.

Intel’s Cascade Lake previously topped it by six memory channels, but Ice Lake-SP boosts it by eight and sets parity with AMD’s epic. The addition of extra cores hit Intel’s top clock — the 28-core XEON Platinum 8280 has a base clock of 2.7GHz and a maximum single-core turbo clock of 4GHz, with a single-core clock boost of 3. 7GHz/3.5GHz/2.9GHz. Depending on whether AVX2 or AVX-512 is being used. The 40-core scalable Xeon 8380 has all 3GHz core gain and 3.4GHz maximum clock.

If we compare specifically at the 28-core mark, the Xeon Gold 6348 replaces processors such as the Xeon Platinum 8280 or the gold Xeon 6258R. The 2nd GEN XEON GOLD 6258R has a 2.7GHz Base/4GHz Boost Clock while the 3rd Gen Xeon Gold 6348 has a 2.6GHz base clock, 3.4GHz All-Core Turbo as well as single-core boost brains at 3.5 GHz.

Improved Intel performance results come from ICL IPC (Instructions per Clock Cycle) rising above Intel’s older 14 nm architecture and from its combination increase in the main. The fact that Intel is only claiming an average performance boost of 1.46X implies that some Lake-SP CPU CPUs are a smaller bit slower than their 14-bit counterparts.

Positioning Changes

Intel has standardized some features on the XEON XEN REC GEN and is offering a little ski at lower prices. All 3rd Gen XEON scalable processors support eight channels of DDR4-3200 DRAM on 2DPC, they support up to 4TB of RAM per socket, they all support SGX Anclaves (although size varies from 8GB to 512GB, with 64GB standard). All chips use three UPI links for 11.2 GT/s throughput, they all offer 64 PCIE 4.0 lanes, and every new Xeon supports Optane. Intel had previously bundled the price as far as they supported the memory, so the switch to 4TB is welcome.

Anandtech has published a review of the XEON XEN XEN scalable family, and it highlights how poorly Intel competed in this late market. On the one hand, Anandtech’s findings confirm that Intel’s marketing claims around this chip are largely honest. The expulsions are real and impressive:

Unfortunately, these gains are not enough for Intel to shake AMD. Anandtech reckons the Xeon 8380 offers up to 1.18x improvement in performance per watt, but the average 28-core Xeon 6330 stack shows very little improvement over its cascading lake predecessor other than pricing; The 6330 list price is about half the Xeon Gold 6258R.

The problem with an ice lake on a server like a laptop is that Intel has to give back an honest chunk of its clock speed to win these improvements. The single-threaded clock clock is 3.4GHz instead of 4GHz, while all major multi-threaded clocks are down about 10 percent.

Intel claims it will still deliver Sapphire Rapids at the end of 2021, but we expect actual volume shipments to not start until 12022. Ice Lake-Sp is a big step forward for Intel, with real efficiency and performance benefits, but it struggles with a 2.28x gap in focus. With Ice Lake-SP running at 40 cores, AMD’s density advantage dropped to «just» 1.6x. It was not reasonable to expect that the icy Lake S.P. was to close this gap at one boundary — and it didn’t — but it doesn’t show enough flow and uplift for each system to put Intel on the path to more effectively compete with what AMD and ARM are bringing to the server market.
