Is the 1650 better than the 1050 ti: Nvidia GTX 1650 vs 1050 Ti: How much faster is Nvidia’s new graphics card?

Nvidia GTX 1650 vs 1050 Ti: How much faster is Nvidia’s new graphics card?

At long last, we have a successor to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. But just how much faster is Nvidia’s new GTX 1650, and is it worth the upgrade for current GTX 1050 Ti owners? To help answer that question, I’ve gone and made some more graphs, pitting each graphics card against each other to see how they fare at 1920×1080 across a variety of different quality settings — because let’s face it, you can’t have a competition for the best graphics card under £150 / $150 without at least one bar chart somewhere.

Watch on YouTube

I’ll be upfront. I’m personally not convinced the GTX 1650 is the graphics card you should be buying in this particular price bracket. Instead, you should probably be thinking about the 8GB version of AMD’s Radeon RX 570 if you’ve only got around £150 / $150 to spend, and you can find out more information on how the two cards compare in our dedicated GTX 1650 vs RX 570 comparison article.

But! For the sake of those of you who are keen to see what kind of benefits Nvidia’s new Turing GPU brings to the mix over their outgoing Pascal architecture, have I got the graphs for you. After all, it’s always interesting to see how big the leap is between two different generations of cards, especially when they’re from the same xx50 family.

Nvidia GTX 1650 vs 1050 Ti: How we test

So, like normal, I’ve tested each card with my general games benchmarking suite at 1920×1080 to see how they perform across different quality settings. The idea is to see what it takes to get a decent 60fps in each game, and how far I’m able to push them before things get too choppy.

The games in question are Monster Hunter: World, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Final Fantasy XV (with Nvidia’s fancy HairWorks, TurfEffects, VXAO and ShadowLibs effects turned off), Total War: Warhammer II, The Witcher III and Metro Exodus.

Paired with my Intel Core i5-8600K CPU and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 2133MHz RAM, I’ve seen what each card can do on High and Medium settings at 1080p (mostly because these are the only realistic quality settings you’re going to be using with these particular cards), and taken an average frame rate either from their own built-in benchmarks or from my own repeated manual gameplay tests to see how they stack up against each other.

To aid us in our quest, I’ve got Zotac’s GeForce GTX 1650 OC edition and Palit’s GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Storm X card, both of which are at the lower end of their respective price ranges — which, ironically at the moment, means they both cost an identical £139 in the UK right now. Still, this should give us a pretty good idea of what to expect as a baseline experience from each type of card, as well as

Nvidia GTX 1650 vs 1050 Ti: 1080 performance

Starting with our High quality setting results (because, let’s be honest, neither card are really up to playing games on Ultra), you can see from the chart below that the GTX 1650 offers quite the step up in terms of overall speed. With jumps of at least 10fps in a lot of games, the GTX 1650 is able to offer speeds on High that the GTX 1050 Ti could only ever dream of on Medium.

This is arguably the kind of generational leap you’d want from this kind of entry-level GPU, effectively letting you play at one quality setting higher than you could before. Final Fantasy XV is still a bit of a tough crystal to creak, all told, offering the smallest bump in speed out of my test games, but I’d argue that an improvement of an average of 7fps is still going to be just as noticeable as all the others. After all, every frame counts when you’re erring on the lower-end of 30fps, and even a couple of extra frames can help turn it into something vaguely playable as opposed to a stuttering slideshow.

Arguably, though, you’re going to be hitting the best speeds on Medium settings with these cards, and once again the GTX 1650 offers a welcome boost in this department, ranging as high as 15fps over in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. If you’re wondering why Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s results are exactly the same, fear not. For some reason, both quality settings produced pretty much exactly the same results when I had their basic SMAA anti-aliasing enabled during my tests, and it’s something I’ve seen across several other graphics cards as well.

I’ve also added in Metro Exodus here, because it simply isn’t playable on either card using the benchmarking tool’s High preset. That’s not to say you can’t get playable frame rates at all on High quality in Metro Exodus with these cards (some creative tinkering with some of the other settings as outlined in my Metro Exodus PC graphics performance guide will almost certainly get you part of the way there), but for the sake of keeping everything fair and square I’ve kept everything in the benchmark’s preset profiles as is in order to get a true measure of what ‘Medium’ quality really looks like. And what a difference Nvidia’s Turing GPU makes, turning a just barely playable average of 30fps into something much more comfortable in the region of 40fps.

Nvidia GTX 1650 vs 1050 Ti: Conclusion

All in all, the GTX 1650 offers a pretty decent performance bump compared to the outgoing GTX 1050 Ti, which, considering they cost exactly the same amount of money these days, makes the GTX 1050 Ti pretty much obsolete as an entry-level graphics card. As I mentioned above, though, the main problem is that AMD’s Radeon RX 570 is also around the £150 / $150 mark these days, which is even faster than the GTX 1650.

There’s no denying the GTX 1650 is a decent entry-level graphics card for those after something small and energy efficient, but in terms of raw power, the RX 570 continues to reign supreme as the best graphics card for cash-strapped 1080p buyers.

The 1650 has 16% more CUDA cores and is based on Nvidia’s newer Turing architecture. The 1650 also has higher base and boost clock speeds, and while both have 4GB of GDDR5 memory, the 1650’s appears to be a little faster.

PERFORMANCE

GRAPHICS CARDS USED:

  • Gigabyte GTX 1650 OC
  • MSI GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X

Both have a little factory overclock, expect slightly different results with different models.

SYSTEM SPECS:

  • Intel i7-8700K CPU overclocked to 5.0GHz
  • MSI Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard
  • 16GB of RAM running at DDR4-3200 in dual channel.

Let’s get into gaming performance.

Apex legends

Apex legends was tested in campaign mode. In this test there was a 24% higher average frame rate with the 1650, and stepping up to 1440p the difference increased to a 28% lead for the 1650.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is one of the only games where I was consistently seeing a slightly lower frame rate with the 1050 Ti. This time the 1650 was performing 23% faster at 1080p and 1440p.

Battlefield V

Battlefield V was tested in campaign mode, in terms of average FPS at 1080p the 1650 was 12FPS faster and  9FPS faster at 1440p.

Counter Strike GO

Counter Strike GO was tested using the games built in benchmark tool. In this test at 1080p the1650 had a 10% higher average frame rate, lowering slightly to a 9% improvement at 1440p.

Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 was tested with the games benchmark tool, and there wasn’t too much of a difference in this test. At 1080p the 1650 was just under 21% faster, and at 1440p it was only a couple of FPS higher, which translates to almost a 20% boost.

Far Cry New Dawn

Far Cry New Dawn was tested with all graphical settings at high, and there was only a 20% and 19% higher average FPS at 1080p and 1440p respectively.

Fortnite

Fortnite was tested using the replay feature, with the exact same replay file used for all testing. At 1080p the 1650 was almost 16% higher in average FPS, dropping down to a 11% improvement once we increase the resolution to 1440p.

Metro Exodus

Metro Exodus was tested with the game’s benchmark tool, and at 1080p this game saw the largest difference out of all 10 titles that I’ve tested, with almost a 25% higher average frame rate. At 1440p it’s still a fair win for the 1650, however the difference lowered to a 22% improvement.

Rainbow Six Siege

Rainbow Six Siege was tested using the built in benchmark. Nothing too special here to mention, at 1080p the 1650 was 24% higher in average FPS, increasing to a little to 26% higher at 1440p.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider tends to be a fairly GPU heavy game, however the differences in this test were quite minimal, with 13 FPS faster at 1080p and 10 FPS ahead at 1440p.

CONCLUSION

The 1650 just launched at $149 and can currently be bought for that price on the low end. While the 1050 Ti, which came out in October 2016, had an MSRP of $139, however today it’s going for closer to the $180 mark on the lower side.

The 1650 does look like a fair improvement over the 1050 Ti, which is exactly how Nvidia seem to be marketing it, but once you take into account options from AMD it’s not great at all.

GeForce GTX 1050 Ti vs GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER Graphics cards Comparison

When choosing between GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER, it is worth examining the specifications of the models in detail. Do they meet the recommended requirements of modern games and software? Storage capacity, form factor, TDP, available ports, warranty and manufacturer support are all important. For example, the size of a PC case can limit the maximum thickness and length of the card. Often, instead of the factory overclocked card and RGB backlight, it is better to choose a reference model with a more efficient GPU. And make sure that your current power supply unit has the correct connection pins (using adapters is not recommended). This GPUs compare tool is meant to help you to choose the best graphics card for your build. Let’s find out the difference between GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER.

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

For the most part, the GTX 1650 is still capable of playing modern games, but you’ll have to lower the settings to maintain high frame rates. If it is important to keep graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high, you will have to look for options to upgrade. In price-to-performance ratio, the GTX 1650 is great for taking on the competition in budget mid-range graphics cards. The GTX 1650 power requirements are reasonable and it’s very efficient compared to the competition. As for the GTX 1650’s maximum thermal load, the cooling does an excellent job of keeping it under regulatory control. With current 40

In November 2021, Nvidia released its latest mid-range graphics card called the GeForce GTX 1650 Super. This card is part of Nvidia’s SUPER line of graphics cards and was supposed to provide modest improvements over the GTX 1650 released in the first half of 2021. Like all cards from the SUPER line, the GeForce GTX 1650 Super is based on the Turing architecture and is built on a 12nm process technology. In terms of price and availability, the GTX 1650 Super should have been a sub-$200 graphics card that would deliver consistent performance for 1080P gaming without being too expensive. The main competitors of the GTX 1650 Super are the AMD RX 5500 XT, as well as other previous generation AMD graphics cards such as the RX 580 and RX 570, and older Nvidia GPUs such as the GTX 1060 6GB and GTX 970.

According to Nvidia, the GTX 1650 Super should be 50% faster than the regular GTX 1650 and up to 2x faster than the previous generation GTX 1050. This means the GTX 1650 Super should deliver up to 60 FPS on average in AAA games and up to 80 FPS in esports games. The card itself should also be a great alternative for buyers who want to enjoy 1080P gaming without having to buy used graphics cards. All in all, the GTX 1650 Super should offer GTX 1060 6GB performance for a suggested retail price of just £159.0003

The GeForce GTX 1650 Super has the same number of CUDA cores as the GTX 1060, which is 1280. However, the new GPU only comes with 4 GB of VRAM, which is the absolute minimum in 2021, but it uses GDDR6 technology, which allows it to process information much faster and therefore not experience any performance hit compared to the GTX 1060. The new GPU also has a narrower memory bus of only 128 bits and does not support the newer PCIe 4.0 serial bus like the RX 5500 XT does.

Compared to the GTX 1060 6GB, the GTX 1650 Super has slightly faster base and boost clock speeds, but overall this frequency increase is less than 1 percent. Both cards have almost the same memory bandwidth, and the GTX 1650 Super has slightly more processing power than the GTX 1060. One thing that’s really impressive about the GTX 1650 Super is that this card draws just 100W at full load, and it requires only one 6-pin power connector to generate power. In addition, there are various custom models of this card made by different manufacturers, so there are many variants of the GTX 1650 Super to choose from, each with its own characteristics.

With all that said, now is the time to test the performance of the GTX 1650 Super against its main competitor, the GTX 1060 6GB. Based on 10 different sources and over 250 data records, we conducted a meta-analysis of various GTX 1650 Super and GTX 1060 6GB benchmarks available online and calculated overall averages to compare the performance of the two graphics cards. All test data was based on PC systems with Intel Core i7-8700K or i9 processors-9900K which had at least 16GB of DDR4 RAM and Windows 10 operating system running on an SSD drive. The results are shown below.
