The Jetstream AC3000, sold exclusively through Walmart, is a tri-band router designed to balance gaming and video-streaming networking loads.

4.0 Excellent

  • Pros
    • Easy to install.
    • Solid close-range throughput performance.
  • Cons
    • Middling long-range throughput performance.
    • Lacks device prioritization and parental control settings.

Sold exclusively at Walmart, the Jetstream AC3000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi Gaming Router ($109. 99) is a midrange model that uses three Wi-Fi bands—two 5GHz and one 2.4GHz—to help balance network traffic in homes where online gaming and 4K video streaming vie for network bandwidth. It’s very easy to install and turned in respectable scores on our close-range throughput performance tests, but its long-range performance was spotty. Although the Jetstream AC3000 has an affordable price and a second 5GHz band that will help distribute Wi-Fi traffic, it’s worth paying $90 more for the Editors’ Choice Asus RT-AC86U if you need a gaming router with advanced features like device prioritization and parental controls.

Tri-Band Service

A shiny black wedge-shaped enclosure that measures 1.9 by 9.2 by 6.0 inches (HWD), the Jetstream AC3000 can sit on a desktop or be hung on a wall using the mounting holes on the base. The router has eight nonremovable, adjustable antennas, and around back you’ll find four gigabit LAN ports, a WAN port, a USB 3.0 port, and power and reset buttons. The front of the cabinet contains LED indicators for Status, Wi-Fi, WAN, and all four LAN ports. Also up front are a WPS button and a Turbo button that can be used to flush the router’s internal memory. The Turbo button is supposed to provide optimized performance, but I saw no noticeable improvement in my tests.

The Jetstream AC3000 is a tri-band router powered by a dual-core processor running at 800MHz and 1GB of RAM. It has one 2.4GHz band and two 5GHz bands and can reach speeds of up to 400Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, up to 867Mbps on one of the 5GHz bands, and up to 1,733Mbps on the secondary 5GHz band. It uses Wave 2 802.11ac technology which supports MU-MIMO (Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output) simultaneous data streaming to compatible clients, and direct-to-client signal transmissions, or beamforming.

The router can be managed using an iOS or Android mobile app or with a web console. The web console opens to a Status screen that shows how many clients are connected, LAN and WAN network stats, and wireless SSIDs and channels. Click the Clients button to see a detailed list of connected devices. At the bottom of the screen are Status, Wizard, Wi-Fi, and Setup buttons. The Status button takes you back to the Status screen and the Wizard button can be used to run the Setup Wizard.

Use the Wi-Fi button to configure wireless settings such as SSID names and Passwords, Security Type (Open, WPA/WPA2 Mix, WPA, WPA2), Wi-Fi Channel and Channel width, and Wi-Fi Mode. In the Setup menu, you can configure LAN and WAN settings, set up USB sharing, manage Firewall settings, configure NAT and DMZ settings, and update the router firmware. Missing from the Jetstream AC3000’s management features are the robust parental controls and malware protection that you get with routers such as the Asus RT-AC86U ($189.99 at Amazon) and the TP-Link Archer C2300 .

See How We Test Wireless Routers

Throughput performance was mixed. The Jetstream AC3000 garnered 135Mbps on the 2.4GHz close-proximity (same-room) throughput test, beating both the Netgear XR500 and the Asus RT-AC86U by 31Mbps. The Linksys WRT32X beat them all with a score of 148Mbps. The Jetstream AC3000’s score of 41Mbps on the 30-foot 2.4GHz test was the slowest of the bunch, but the Netgear XR500 was only faster by 1Mbps. The Asus RT-AC86U and the Linksys WRT32X ($299.00 at Amazon) both managed 86Mbps on this test.

On the 5GHz close-proximity test, the Jetstream AC3000’s score of 470Mbps was faster than the Linksys WRT32X, but trailed the Netgear XR500 by 21Mbps. The Asus RT-AC86U took top honors with 550Mbps. Once again, the Jetstream AC3000 struggled with long-range throughput: Its score of 128Mbps on the 30-foot test took last place, while the Asus RT-AC86U led with an impressive 300Mbps.

We use three identical Acer Aspire R13 laptops equipped with Qualcomm QCA61x4A MU-MIMO circuitry to test MU-MIMO throughput performance. The Jetstream AC3000’s score of 153Mbps on the close-proximity test was a bit slower than the Linksys WRT32X (175Mbps), the Netgear XR500 (176Mbps), and the Asus RT-AC86U (178Mbps). Similarly, its score of 66Mbps on the 30-foot MU-MIMO test was slower than the rest. The Asus RT-AC86U (150Mbps) was more than twice as fast.

To test file-transfer (read and write) performance, we move a 1.5GB folder containing music, video, photo, and office files between a USB drive connected to the router and a desktop which is also connected to the router. On the write test, the Jetstream AC3000’s score of 33MBps was slightly faster than the Asus RT-AC86U, but not nearly as fast as the Netgear XR500 and the Linksys WRT32X. Its score of 36MBps on the read test came in last behind the Asus RT-AC86U, the Netgear XR500, and the Linksys WRT32X.

Wi-Fi for Multitaskers

Having a gaming router with a secondary 5GHz band to handle tasks like video streaming and online gaming frees up the other two bands for everyday tasks like web surfing, torrent downloads, email, and other home-network-dependent applications. The Jetstream AC3000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi Gaming Router also performed admirably on our close-proximity throughput tests and was a breeze to install, but its long-range throughput and file-transfer performance could be better.

It also lacks some of the features that we’ve come to expect with the current crop of home Wi-Fi routers such as parental controls, QoS settings that allow you to assign bandwidth priority to specific clients and applications, and protection against viruses and other malware threats. Even though it costs $90 more, the Asus RT-AC86U offers robust parental controls, gamer-centric settings that let you monitor and optimize network bandwidth for specific games, and Trend Micro’s AI Protection anti-malware software. It doesn’t have a second 5GHz radio band, but it’s an awesome performer nonetheless and remains our Editors’ Choice.

7 Free Alternative Router Firmware

What is wrong with your default router’s firmware? Some people have the view that everyone should have the freedom to control the software that runs on devices they own, if required, to make necessary changes for the better. These third party firmware comes with additional functions such as bandwidth allocation, bandwidth quotas, parental control, boost wireless wifi signals, enable password internet access, and more. Turn a regular old router into an enterprise-class device.

OpenWrt is a highly extensible GNU/Linux distribution for embedded devices (typically wireless routers). Unlike many other distributions for these routers, OpenWrt is built from the ground up to be a full-featured, easily modifiable operating system for your router.

In practice, this means that you can have all the features you need with none of the bloat, powered by a Linux kernel that’s more recent than most other distributions. For developers, OpenWrt is the framework to build an application without having to build a complete firmware around it; for users this means the ability for full customization, to use the device in ways never envisioned.

Gargoyle is a free firmware upgrade for your wireless router, based on OpenWRT but with an enhanced interface (not LUCI) focused on ease of use. Reliable, easy to use and configure, and you’ll know exactly where your bandwidth is allocated thanks to the convenient graphs available in the administration interface.

  • Monitor Bandwidth – usage for every computer
  • Set Quotas and Throttles – ensuring that network resources are allocated fairly
  • Block Forbidden Websites – or block everything except a white-list of allowed addresses
  • Configuration A Wireless Bridge – connecting two networks without any ugly wires

Tomato is a system based on Linux, dedicated for routers with Broadcom chipset and distributed on the GPL license. Its development was started by Jonathan Zarate. The LEDE project was founded as a spin-off of the OpenWrt project and shares many of the same goals. We are building an embedded Linux distribution that makes it easy for developers, system administrators or other Linux enthusiasts to build and customize software for embedded devices, especially wireless routers. The name LEDE stands for Linux Embedded Development Environment.

LEDE software is a complete replacement for the firmware for many home and small-office routers and embedded devices. If you are happy with your current system, you should probably stick with what’s working. LEDE provides stable, robust, secure, and high performance firmware for home routers and embedded devices. With LEDE, you have fewer concerns about needing to reboot your router frequently, security flaws, or poor performance.

  • Ad-blocking to avoid the worst of popups and annoying web images
  • VPN services, to allow secure access to your home network while you’re away
  • Secure access to remote services to avoid snooping on your traffic while you’re browsing from home.
  • Guest Wi-Fi networks with password, that are firewalled from private/business/family networks
  • Time limits & parental controls for selected devices and many other capabilities.

ROOter project is an open source firmware for over one hundred different routers that provides extensive support for the use of USB Cellular modems in routers that don’t support this from the factory. It is based on firmware from the OpenWrt project. The goal of this project is to provide support for a large number of USB modems and have them operate at full speed on your Provider’s Network. Plus it provides detailed information about your connection such as signal strength and cell tower details.

ROOter has been available since April 2013 and has proved to be a popular download for improving routers. In 2016 there were 252,000 firmware downloads of ROOter images. Since its inception there have been over 500,000 firmware downloads of all the different ROOter versions.

Configuring routers based on DD-WRT —

To get started, download the firmware file factory-to-ddwrt. bin from the website dd-wrt.com corresponding to your router model and its hardware version.

We recommend using the DD-WRT software release r25697 dated 12/22/2014. If your router model is not found in this thread, try the latest version in the beta section. Read more about setting up the beta version below.

Download the DD-WRT firmware to the router. How to do this for TP-Link routers is written here. Firmware replacement instructions for other router manufacturers can be found on the DD-WRT developer’s website or on their forum. nine0005

After updating the firmware, enter the address 192.168.1.1 into the browser. You will see a page asking you to enter a new username and password. Enter them and be sure to write down .

Next, you will be taken to the router status page.

Let’s move on to setting up the router. Select Setup — Basic Setup from the menu. In the Network Setup section, in the Local IP Address field, write 192.168.99.1 , this will be the new address of your router. We change it in order to eliminate possible network conflicts with other routers in your network in the future. Which you most likely have. nine0005

In Local DNS we write the ip address of the DNS server — 8.8.8.8

-Authoritative

Attention, after applying the parameters, the router address will change to 192.168.99.1

In order not to lose control over the router, we will configure remote access from the external network via the WAN port. Go to page Administration — Management . Under RemoteAccess , check HTTP in option Web GUI Management . After that, the router will be available at its external ip address and port 8080.

Let’s move on to setting up a WiFi access point. Open page Wireless — Basic settings . In the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field, enter the name of your WiFi hotspot, for example, the name of your establishment.

Only English letters, numbers and symbols can be used in the hotspot name. Cyrillic letters cannot be used. nine0005

Go to page Wireless — Wireless Security , make sure that option Security Mode is Disabled .

Now let’s move on to setting up the hotspot itself.

    • Open page Services — Hotspot
    • in section Chillispot enable option Chillispot by setting the checkbox Enable
    • nine0085 in field Primary Radius Server IP/DNS enter radius.wi-fi.click

    • in the field Backup Radius Server IP/DNS enter radius2.wi-fi.click
    • in DNS Server I P enter 8. 8.8.8
    • to Redirect URL enter https://login.wi-fi.click
    • to Shared Key Enter key wfs123
    • to Radius NAS ID enter your hostpot ID from your personal account
    • in the field UAM Secret enter the password of your hotspot from your personal account
    • in the field UAM Allowed enter
