NVMe or M.2 or SATA what is the difference when choosing SSD

In this article I will try to clearly explain the difference between a hard drive and a 2. 5-inch SSD, M2 and mSATA drives. To begin with, it is worth understanding what is the difference between an M.2 SSD and a 2.5-inch SSD and mSATA, it consists in different types of connection to the motherboard of a laptop or desktop computer.

Since the introduction of the classic 2.5” SSD, enough time has passed for new form factors such as mSATA SSD, M.2 SSD and NVMe to emerge. In this article, we’ll look at technology like NVMe, how it differs from standard SATA drives, and whether all M.2 drives are classified as NVMe.

Before buying ssd m2 NVMe, you should figure out what type of drive your computer or laptop motherboard supports. If everything is clear enough with the SATA 2.5 and mSATA form factor, then with M.2 it is not so simple.

Almost all PC motherboard versions have an output for a SATA drive, but not all have a connector on the motherboard for an M.2 drive. The same is true with motherboards in laptops. Older laptops only have a connector for a SATA 2. 5” drive and the maximum that can be installed is a SATA SSD drive, but more modern laptops have additional connectors on motherboards for an M.2 drive.

And everything would be great if the M.2 Slot was of the same type and the M.2 boards themselves were only of the same size. But let’s take it all in order, let’s start with the types of boards.

Types of M2 SSD

The M.2 drive comes in four subtypes: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 (most popular), 22110. The first two digits indicate the width of the board, the second two digits indicate the length.

Now that you know if there is a slot on the motherboard at all and what length of M.2 drive your board supports, let’s move on to the type of slot.

There are 2 types of bus that M2 works on, it is SATA bus or PCIe bus, and there is also a slot type with «M» and «B» keys.

As a rule, an M2 drive running on a SATA bus supports 2 «M» + «B» keys. The M2 NVMe SSD drive running on the PCIe and AHCI bus will be with one «M» key.

From the example in the picture, you can see that the M2 SATA SSD card with the M + B key can be installed in most slots, while it is physically impossible to install the M2 NVMe SSD with the “M” key in the “B” slot, therefore pay attention to which slot is installed on your computer motherboard. What is the difference between M2 and NVMe

M.2 is just a form factor. M.2 drives can be in SATA versions (like M.2 Samsung 860 EVO) and NVMe versions (like Samsung 970 EVO)

As you can see, these two boards are very similar in appearance, but have a slight difference in the connection connector. SATA M.2 SSDs and 2.5″ SATA SSDs actually work with the same specs. NVMe M.2 drives work on the PCIe bus, and these are completely different bandwidth indicators, they are significantly higher than the SATA bus.

What is NVMe

NVMe is an open standard designed for «Non-Volatile Express Memory» that allows modern SSDs to run at the read/write speeds their flash memory is capable of. In essence, this approach allows SSD flash memory to work directly through the PCIe interface, rather than through the legacy SATA technology. In other words, NVMe is a description of the bus that the component uses to electrically communicate with the PC, not a new type of flash memory. It’s also not form factor related, so NVMe drives can come in either M.2 or PCIe card form factors. With both form factors, the component is electrically connected to the PC via PCIe rather than via the SATA bus.

Modern motherboards use SATA III with a maximum throughput of 600 MB/s (or 300 MB/s for SATA II). With this connection, most SSDs deliver read/write speeds of around 530/500MB/s. By comparison, a 7200 RPM SATA drive delivers about 100 MB/s depending on age, condition, and degree of fragmentation. NVMe storage, provides write speeds up to 3500 MB / s. This is 6 times more than SATA!

M2 SSD Compatibility

We have sorted out the types, sizes and working tires of M2, now let’s understand the compatibility of M.2 SSD with your PC or laptop.

Many manufacturers install an M.2 slot on motherboards with an «M» key and a choice of bus support — SATA or PCIe. That is, you buy M.2 SATA or M2 NVMe and any of the drives will work.

But there are cases when the motherboard works only on one of the two buses, and does not support, for example, the new NVMe standard or the old SATA. To make sure that your motherboard is compatible with the M2 SSD drive you are buying, I will show an example with an Asus motherboard.

We go into the BIOS, then to the Advanced section and find the line «M. 2 Configuration», then in the drop-down menu you can see that the motherboard supports the SATA and PCIe bus, and therefore M. 2 SSD both SATA and NVMe.

Well, given the speed advantages of NVMe drives, it’s definitely worth considering when upgrading your PC or laptop. Is the higher price of ssd m2 nvme right for your budget, especially if your application that you work with often uses the hard drive or requires constant reading / writing of the hard drive.

M2 memory types

SLC — first generation memory, this memory has the largest resource in terms of the number of overwrites in a memory cell.

MLC — second generation memory, already has a memory cell of 2bit, but the memory wear resource is significantly lower.

TLC — third-generation memory with a 3bit cell, the number of rewrites per memory cell is even lower than that of previous generations, but is considered the «golden mean» in memory types for M2 drives.

QLC — memory is not the best, but cheap.

If you are going to buy a capacitive M2 drive, then pay attention to M2 with MLC 3D NAND or V-NAND memory, this memory will win in terms of characteristics. Or in the same bundle, TLC 3D NAND memory has proven itself well.

There is also technology such as Intel Optane Memory using 3D Xpoint memory. This technology, to a greater extent, is now used as an accelerator in conjunction with a SATA hard drive.

Over the past 16 years, it has been updated three times, while maintaining backward compatibility. In 2009, a compact version of this interface appeared — mSATA, which is located directly on the motherboard.

Socket m 2 support on motherboards started in 2013. In its purpose it is very similar to mSATA, however, it allows you to bypass the bandwidth limit of the SATA interface . Since the mSATA standard is based on SATA 3, its throughput is only 600 MB/s, and today’s SSDs already operate at speeds of 3000 MB/s and higher.

It looks like an SSD in the M2 form factor

Using the m2 connector, you can install not only an SSD, but also other ngff devices into your computer: Wi-Fi cards, Bluetooth, NFC and GPS expansion cards. With this type of connection, you will get rid of the numerous wires that go from the drive to the motherboard. Thus, save space inside the system unit, improve its cooling and simplify maintenance.

SSD drives using the m2 connector look like RAM sticks — they are just as thin and are inserted directly into the computer’s motherboard. It is noteworthy that the m 2 connector was originally used in laptops and netbooks, because their case is thin enough to install full-size devices there. Then, the m2 connector began to be found on ordinary motherboards — on stationary PCs.

The m 2 connector uses an interface type such as PCI Express to communicate with the motherboard. Just do not confuse with the PCI Express connector itself, which can be several and which are located below the video card connector, and are present even on old motherboards. This is a little different, although there are SSDs that connect via a PCIe port. And here is what the m2 connector looks like on the motherboard:

SSD drives designed for the m2 slot are available in different sizes: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. The first two digits indicate the width, and the next two indicate the length (in millimeters). The longer the bar, the more chips can be placed on it, the greater the capacity of the disk. Despite such a variety of form factors, the most popular is 2280.

The m 2 connector on modern motherboards can have a different position. It’s about some «keys». Again, we can draw an analogy with RAM slats: DDR3 memory differs from DDR2 in the location of the keys — small cutouts in the slats and the slots themselves, respectively. Also here, small cutouts can be located on the left and right sides of port .

Connector m2 can have two keys: B and M. It turns out that they are not compatible with each other. However, it is possible to find motherboards with a B + M connector (combo). In addition to the PCIe interface, the m2 port also supports SATA mode. But the speed in SATA mode will be much lower than in PCI Express. The keys usually determine what type of interface will be used.

In conventional hard disk drives (HDDs), the controller communicates with the operating system via the AHCI protocol. But, this protocol is not able to use all the features of modern solid state drives. This prompted the emergence of a new protocol called NVMe. The new protocol is characterized by low latency and allows you to perform more operations per second, while minimally loading the processor.

How to choose m2 SSD

  • Port size m2. Pick up such a disk so that it can be installed in the motherboard so that nothing rests anywhere.
  • Key type — B, M, or combination. Both the motherboard and the SSD drive itself must have key compatibility. SATA m2 SSD drives are usually available with «M + B» keys, and PCIe m2 SSDs with «M» key.
  • Interface version and number of lanes: PCI-E 2.0 x2 has a bandwidth of 8 Gb/s, and PCI-E 3.0 x4 has a bandwidth of 3.2 GB/s.
  • Which interface is supported — PCI Express or SATA. Of course, PCIe looks preferable because it allows you to work at high speeds.
