Fashion for modding — Kommersant Krasnoyarsk

Fans of computer technology no longer have a powerful enough processor and a cool video card — they want their computers to amaze the imagination even with their appearance. For this, they are ready to spend two or three hundred dollars on modding — changing the computer case and peripherals almost beyond recognition. This phenomenon also captured the inhabitants of Krasnoyarsk, who, however, prefer exclusive works, albeit unusual looking, but standard cases of Taiwanese firms. However, some experts believe that conventional modding will soon give way to a new generation of computers — barebone systems.
nine0003
Computer modding is becoming more and more popular among computer geeks. The word «modding» is derived from the English modification, which in Russian means «change», and means computer tuning, similar to car tuning. Modding is designed to turn an ordinary system unit, which rests somewhere deep under the table, into a real work of art, worthy of putting it on public display.
The idea of modding originated in the West at the end of 9The 0s of the 20th century were not without the influence of companies such as SGI and Apple, which were among the first to start producing computers in original cases that did not look like ordinary personal computers that all offices were filled with at that time. However, the modding itself began with cutting holes in the case to install additional fans — some computer fans involved in the «overclocking» of processors lacked standard coolers to sufficiently cool the system. Then the holes began to be cut out for aesthetic purposes. Then, at the end of 90s, specialized sites and online stores began to appear on the Internet, offering special tools for modding, as well as individual parts for modifying a computer.
In Russia, modding appeared at the very beginning of the new millennium, and a year or two ago, modding studios began to open in Krasnoyarsk. Their main clients, as well as in the West, were computer fans who do not spare money for electronic toys. In Russia, modding found the greatest popularity among young people — the older generation was content with standard computers. nine0007
Modding is usually understood as changing the appearance of quite standard parts of a computer. The most popular solution is to make transparent plastic inserts in the case, add neon lights inside, and apply the original image to the case itself using an airbrush. If desired, the body can be trimmed to look like wood, gilded or chromed, which will help to organically fit the computer even into the most non-standard interior. Very often, modders replace the standard LEDs with special, brighter ones, install them in the keyboard, mouse, and also in the internal parts of the computer. Some install expensive water cooling systems for processors, which cost up to several hundred dollars, more stylish cables and additional neon-lit fans. nine0007
The number of modding enthusiasts is small. Firstly, for most users it is enough that the computer works, and how it looks is the tenth thing. Secondly, modding is quite expensive entertainment. As one of the Krasnoyarsk modders, Vladimir Chasovskikh, said, “painting the case by an artist will cost 100-150 dollars, depending on the size of the picture and the complexity of the work. Some professional airbrush artists working in Russia may charge up to a thousand dollars for exclusive work. The rest of the work will also cost a lot.” Thus, for a full-fledged case modding, you will need to pay at least a few hundred dollars. nine0007
However, now you can become the owner of an unusual looking computer for a smaller amount. Over the past year and a half, large firms producing computer cases have become interested in modding. They started making neon-lit aquarium enclosures, which you can buy in Krasnoyarsk for as little as $70-$100. Such a case is more expensive than a conventional case, which costs no more than $30, but is much cheaper than a hand-modified one in a studio.
There is only one drawback of serial cases — it lies in the fact that they are serial, which means they are the same. However, this does not repel Krasnoyarsk computer fans — as Vladimir Chasovskikh admitted, he eventually had to close his own modding studio, which could not stand the competition with suppliers of serial «modified cases». nine0007
Modding is still fun for enthusiasts to this day. As a representative of the Krasnoyarsk computer company «Avers» said, despite the fact that his company offers a fairly wide range of components for modding, their sales, compared to conventional components, occupy an insignificant share. This is largely due to the fact that the cost of «modified» components is 2-2.5 times higher than conventional ones. These goods are bought mainly by students.
Artem Kuimov, a sales consultant at the Comfort trading house, confirmed that the volume of sales of aquarium cases and other “fashionable” components offered by his company is very small. Among buyers who are interested in such products, according to him, there are both teenagers and more mature people with a good income. He explained that modding parts are a niche product needed by a small number of people, but expressed confidence that their sales will grow in the future. nine0007
Alexey Nekrasov, head of the sales department at GeoService, which also sells computer equipment, agreed with these conclusions, noting that the next generation of computers, the so-called barebone systems, are replacing aquarium cases and other modding products. They, like «modified» computers, differ from conventional workstations in stylish design and are lighter and more compact. The cost of a fully assembled barebone system is about 20-30% more expensive than a standard computer of the same power. Despite the fact that barebone systems have the same functionality as standard computers, they are positioned not as computers, but as household appliances, designed primarily for playing games and playing music and videos. “Barebone systems are designed for those who want to buy a computer for their home, but do not want to understand its device and settings,” explained the representative of GeoService. The number of such buyers will grow over time, and therefore, according to GeoService, in the future barebone will be able to oust not only «modified» but also ordinary computers. nine0007 MAXIM BAIKALOV
