It’s been a busy and short two weeks since Anand and I thoroughly covered smartphones, tablets, and SoCs at MWC. I got back to an ever-growing pile of monitors that need reviewing, he got back to the Xoom and new SSDs.

In the monitor space, it’s been an interesting couple of months because everyone has been updating their 30-inch display. We reviewed the HP ZR30w back when that happened and came away impressed but wanting more in a couple of areas — more input options, an OSD, and a better scaler. Then came Dell U3011, which brought equally decent performance, a wealth of input options, and that OSD we wanted.

Today we’re looking at NEC’s latest and greatest, the MultiSync PA301w. I’ve been playing with a pre-production unit which is identical to what will be shipping, and have put it through the usual paces of our monitor testing suite. First up is the specification table:

Right away you can tell the PA301w is in a different class of professional displays than the two other counterparts I’ve already mentioned. It’s priced accordingly, and has the professional-oriented inputs and other features. There’s no HDMI or component in, nor is there audio pass through. The PA301w is aimed at the professional that demands uncompromising performance and has the budget to satisfy that need. The PA301w is built around a 10-bit P-IPS (Professional-IPS) panel likely sourced from LG. Like the current crop of 30-inch monitors, that means you can drive 30 bit per color (10-bit per channel) content over DisplayPort if you have a capable GPU and the right software. I’m still searching for software that actually uses 30-bit color (if you know of any, I’d honestly love to hear about it), but when that time comes, it’ll be supported.

The PA301w also has a few features that I haven’t seen in a monitor before. Chief among them is onboard support for some basic calibration with an X-Rite i1D2 colorimeter. Plug it into a USB port on the side of the monitor, go into the OSD, and the display will automatically calibrate white point, brightness, and the color tristimulus values. It doesn’t displace software calibration, but gets the monitor to a very workable initial starting position you can tweak from, which (if you’ve ever calibrated a display before) can be a huge timesaver. The other interesting hardware feature is something of a built-in KVM USB switch. There are two USB downstream ports, which can be associated with particular display inputs and switch peripherals accordingly. Lastly, there are a number of green/power-saving features to both show power use and offer power savings by doing some auto brightness adjustment when applicable.

On to the hardware itself — the PA301w is seriously a beast. It’s the biggest, baddest monitor around in terms of just sheer size. I don’t usually start off talking about boxes, but there’s just no other way to really demonstrate the magnitude of the PA301w’s size without doing so.

The box is easily two times the size of the HP ZR30w box, and almost three times how big I remember the Dell U3011 box being. It doesn’t fit underneath any table or surface in my living room. It fills a good chunk of that room just sitting around, empty, even right now. I’ve never seen something like it on a monitor box (maybe a refrigerator?), but there’s even a wince-inducing typo-ridden warning message encouraging that the monitor be remobed[sic] by two people.

Luckily, I have superhuman strength (yeah right…) and managed to get the thing out intact just by myself. It’s a heavy monitor, at just over 41 lbs (18.8 kg) including stand. The PA301w comes fully assembled and in the upright position. There was more than adequate packing to keep the whole thing safe during transit.

That’s a nice segue into the hardware features of the PA301w. At the bottom of the display arm is a locking switch for holding the monitor at its lowest position.

The display ships with it locked in position so you can lift the thing without the height adjustment arm fully extending. It’s seriously surprising how many displays lately lack locking height adjustment arms, which makes transportation a pain, so it’s nice to see it here.

Also on the back of the display is a cable routing guide, which NEC calls a «cable cover.» You route the cables underneath on each side, then slide the plastic cover down and hide everything. In practice, it’s really only useful if you don’t rotate the monitor 90 degrees, since doing so will always create cable flex and demand more slack than you’ve got back there. It works if you keep things strictly landscape, however.

The backside of the PA301w is on the whole very spartan. There’s an NEC logo up top, the two hand grips for transport if you’re lucky enough to have a friend handy, and as we’ll get to in a second the standard fare kensington lock and ports on the underside. There’s a total of 5.9 inches of travel in the vertical direction when the monitor is in landscape mode, which is a huge amount, but necessary for portrait mode.

The PA301w has a generous amount of tilt in the upward direction (30 degrees), and only a slight 5-10 degree tilt in the downward direction. There’s a lot of monitor to move around, but in spite of that, the springs on the PA301w are nicely preloaded. Tilt can still be somewhat challenging to manipulate though, and definitely requires use of both arms to manipulate the display.

There’s also +/- 30 degrees of swivel support on the base. You can see the circular section at the back which the display arm rotates around. The base is weighted and there’s no chatter as the huge thing rotates around, which is awesome. Thankfully, swivel is easily accomplished with one arm.

You’ll notice so far that there’s really no superficial aesthetic extras tacked onto the PA301w; this is a serious professional display. There’s no metallic bezel running around the whole thing, no fancy shiny chrome parts, no gigantic self-aggrandizing logos on the back, no stickers plastered everywhere selling you what you’ve already ostensibly purchased and taken out of the box. It’s just one huge monolithic slab of serious business.

The front of the PA301w is also understated. The OSD control buttons are at the bottom right, and they’re actual real clicky buttons, nothing capacitive. At the far left is the ambient light sensor, followed by power, followed by the power/status LED which glows blue when on, amber when in standby. The rest of the buttons are self explanatory and as we’ll show in the OSD section get their own LCD driven labels when you actually jump into the OSD.

I’ve already shown it, but on the right side of the PA301w is one of the three downstream USB 2.0 ports. This port is rather special, however, since it’s the one you can plug the X-Rite i1D2 in for onboard calibration. Of course, the port also works like normal when you’re not in that special OSD section. The opposing side is spartan. I should also mention that the PA301w actual display panel is super thick, around 5″ (12.7 cm). It’s not a big deal, but it’s just absolutely huge in comparison with other displays, so be prepared. The remainder of the ports are along the bottom of the lip underside. From left to right, the two remaining downstream USB 2.0 ports, two USB 2.0 upstream ports, 2x DisplayPort 1.1a, 2x DVI-D, and power.

What really sets the PA301w apart in my mind, however, is pivot support. That’s right, you can use it in portrait orientation without using your own VESA mount. I should mention that although I didn’t do it, you can get to the VESA mounting holes by pushing on the metal quick release lever right at the bottom of the mount.

Getting to portrait orientation is a bit of a challenge, however, as you can’t simply just rotate the display 90 degrees — doing so crashes one side down into the base. The display also only rotates in the clockwise direction a significant amount. Counterclockwise rotation is limited to just a few degrees when facing the display from the front.

First, the display has to be tilted all the way out, then it can be rotated 90 degrees, and tilted back into perpendicular position. Rotate orientation in the display driver, and you’re good to go. Vertical travel is limited to 1.2 inches in portrait, but hey, it’s something, and it totally works.

Build quality of the PA301w isn’t wanting for improvement at all. Though the exterior is entirely plastic, the entire display feels beefy and doesn’t vibrate or chatter around when being adjusted. If you vibrate your desk while typing, the whole thing doesn’t shudder either. Again, the spring preloads are just perfect for buttery smooth adjustment and damping on essentially every degree of freedom.

NEC PA301W 30″ Monitor w/ SpectraView Review

NEC is synonymous with high-end displays. Everyone knows they produce great monitors for professional imaging applications. But if they know that much, they also know they’re quite expensive. So why should you pay thousands of dollars for the PA301W 30” monitor when you can get one for a few hundred? What’s the difference? And is it worth it? Let’s find out…

My first impressions of the PA301W monitor come from its size. It isn’t a small monitor — and I don’t just mean the screen size. Compared to the Apple 30” monitor that was discontinued a while back, this thing is definitely twice as thick. And it’s heavier, too. But there are reasons for this. In any case, two handles toward the top of the back of the screen aid in lifting and moving the monitor onto your desk/workstation. The stand lets you angle the monitor up or down or side to side, slightly, so you’re not completely stuck with the position of the monitor (it can be off to the side a bit).

One of the nicest things that I have to say about this monitor is that it comes with all of the necessary cables you might ever need to run it. The monitor features both DVI and mini display port (that you’d plug into the same port as your Thunderbolt port on a newer computer) through the cables it comes with. So you won’t need to go out and buy any silly adapters before your get to use this baby once it’s out of the box.
All of these things might be great, but let’s get to the reasons you’re really buying this…

The Hardware:
First and foremost, one big difference between this monitor and the others is the hardware. Now, there’s a good chance this isn’t something you’ve taken into consideration when buying a monitor. In fact, there’s a good change you haven’t even thought about this at all…but that will change, because it’s important. You can use a calibration hardware and software combination to calibrate any monitor (more on the specifics of that later), but most monitors such as those $300 30” Dell monitors, and even the Apple one, will apply those calibration parameters before sending the signal out to the monitor. That makes sense because the graphics card in your computer has to compensate for each color so it can tell the monitor what colors to actually show. However, the NEC monitor has hardware within the monitor itself to do this conversion. This is huge, as it frees up your graphics card from having to do the conversion itself. While this might normally only be a big deal for those who work with video, editing applications such as Photoshop are finding ways to make more and more use of that graphics card in your computer, especially as the quality and speed of those cards increases in newer systems. So if you’re wondering why a monitor needs to be this big, this is why. And it’s well worth it. Besides, you probably won’t be moving this thing between desks on a daily basis anyway.

Color:
But what you’re really buying this monitor for is the color accuracy, right? Now, I can’t honestly tell you I looked at this monitor and realized, “Wow, that’s more accurate.” The human eye can’t tell the difference that well, and though I’d like to think of myself as super human, my eyes are no different than yours. So, naturally, I had to do some tests.

Honestly, part of me thought, what could be so great about having a color-accurate, color-corrected monitor? I already have the Apple monitor and calibrated that a while back. Could this be better?
Indeed, it was. Even with my Apple monitor, I still print several proofs before finally finding something that prints somewhat as I had envisioned, but still not quite perfectly. The NEC display was another story. I could edit the file that I needed to print, send it to my six-year-old Epson R1800, and never worry about a proof (of course, make sure you have the ICC profiles downloaded and installed from your printer and/or paper manufacturers’ websites). If I didn’t like what came out, it was always because I just wanted to tweak things a bit as my taste changed.

Now, this didn’t happen out of the box, but a short calibration process with NEC’s SpectraViewII is all that was needed. I let the monitor warm up for 45 minutes (you really only need 30, as recommended), ran the software (which finished in less time than it estimated it would take), and voila! The most time-consuming aspect of this was taking the monitor out of the box and putting it on my desk. However great this is, though, is it worth it? $2000+ is still a lot of money to spend on a monitor.

To Buy, or Not To Buy:
Indeed, though, if you’re color correcting video, there’s no doubt this is for you. The size of the display will give you ample workspace, and you’re going to want the hardware in the back of that monitor to free up your own computer’s GPU (attention, all you RED footage editors that insist on using your new Macbook Pros on set).

Additionally, if you’re printing often, at home or with your lab, I can’t express enough how time-consuming it is to have to reprint five versions until you finally get the right one. This takes the guesswork out of printing and will save you that much time, too. And the best part, you really only do need to calibrate the monitor and have the right ICC profile. That’s it! Forget about printer calibrations…your manufacturers have already done that for you with those ICC profiles.

However, if I were working mostly on web content, I can’t say I would give a thumbs up. That’s simply because, odds are, you’re working in sRGB and certain web colors within that and have all the alpha-numerical hex values for your client’s red logo and blue font. So regardless of what you’re seeing on the screen, it’ll be as good as it gets for online viewing — everyone’s monitors are different.

Extras:
Now, if you’ve already made the decision to upgrade and are now comparing this NEC monitor to other high-end monitors out there, there are a few things to consider.
This one has 10-bit color. If you look at the color sRGB and ProPhotoRGB color space models, it’s amazing what you’re not missing. You also have all kinds of data connections on the back, including other USB 2.0 ports and HDMI ports for connecting another computer (that’s right, you can share this monitor and the peripherals attached to it between your desktop and laptop when you’re at the office). The software used to control the monitor’s functions includes a 14-bit lookup table and will let you set your own white balance and model colorspaces in 3D. So if you’re that much of a color junkie, you can do ANYTHING, really. It’s way beyond what I’d ever need, but whatever situation you might find yourself in the future, you’ll be ready.

Doing What’s Right:
Right now, for my current work, I don’t print that much. I’m still a student and will have a major senior show coming up — one that would be great to have this monitor for — but other than that, I won’t need it enough to drop a couple grand on it. That said, as soon as I graduate and get a steady job, I’ll be getting this monitor. The size is perfect for displaying those huge D800 files, and what’s the point in doing color fine art work if you can’t get the proper color from your printer because you can’t see what the printer sees? It’s that simple. There’s no substitute for a great monitor.

NEC gives a four-year warranty based on running your monitor 24/7 for four years. But assuming you won’t be using it nearly that much, you could easily have longer than a decade of color-accurate performance from your NEC monitor.

If you’re interested, you can order the PA301W monitor here from B&H for just under $2400. At the time of this posting, they even have a used one for $1700, though, so you might want to jump on that.

NEC MultiSync PA301W

Geared toward graphics designers, photo editors, and imaging pros of all stripes, the NEC MultiSync PA301W is the latest addition to NEC’s PA series of professional grade desktop monitors, and it’s a beauty. This 30-inch behemoth delivers very accurate color and grayscale performance and offers a slew of high end features, including a 14-bit LUT (look up table), wide gamut IPS panel technology, a built-in KVM switch, tons of customizable settings, and a fully adjustable stand. Its list price of $2,299 is not for the faint of heart, however.

Design and Features
You’ll need a good deal of desktop real estate for the PA301W. The 30-inch screen sits in a matte black cabinet weighing 27.6 pounds and measuring 4.9 inches deep by 27. 1 inches wide, but the stand adds another seven inches to the overall depth. The stand consists of a wide base that offers solid support and lets you easily tilt and swivel the massive screen, and a telescoping arm that gives you almost six inches of height adjustment. Additionally, the panel pivots for portrait mode viewing and has a setting that will automatically rotate the image to match the screen’s orientation. Pivoting the big screen is a little tricky because you have to angle it away from the desktop while positioning it, making it a two hand job.

Thin (0.70-inch) bezels frame the IPS panel, which has a maximum resolution of 2560 by 1600 and a 16:10 aspect ratio. On the right side of the lower bezel are power, menu, and input (select) buttons, as well as a left/right navigation rocker and a light sensor that works with NEC’s AmbiBright technology to adjust brightness based on your lighting environment.. An up/down rocker and a PIP (picture in picture) button are positioned on the lower right-hand bezel. Pressing any button activates a set of on-screen labels that identifies each button’s purpose, making it very easy to navigate the OSD (on screen display) menus. The PA301W is the first NEC monitor to feature two DisplayPort connections, which along with the dual DVI ports gives you four fully digital input connections. They share space at the rear of the cabinet with two upstream and two downstream USB ports, but you don’t get an HDMI port on this model. As with the NEC PA241W, this model has a built-in KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch that allows you to control two computers with a single mouse and keyboard combo. There’s also a single USB port mounted on the right side of the cabinet that makes it easy to plug and unplug external USB devices such as storage drives and printers.

Like the PA241W ($1,049 list, 4 stars), the PA301W supports 14-bit programmable 3D LUT (lookup table) technology, which involves a series of calculations that determine how the image is presented on the screen and is used to calibrate the display (most high end monitors support either 10, 12, or 14-bit LUT technology, with 14 offering the fastest calculations). It also uses IPS panel technology, known for its color and grayscale accuracy, and wide gamut technology, which allows the panel to display 93.3 percent of the NTSC color gamut (as opposed to the 72 percent limit of most displays). It also displays 98.2 percent of the Adobe RGB color space. To ensure color precision the PA301W features an embedded standalone calibration utility that works with NEC’s MDSVSENSOR2 ($199 list), allowing you to calibrate the PA310W without the need for a host PC

There are numerous image adjustments available via the OSD menu system, including brightness (which is measured in cd/m2, or nits), black level, white level, sharpness, hue, and expansion (zoom). Other settings include gamma and individual red, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and magenta saturation adjustments. There are five picture modes; sRGB (displays images in the standard color space used for Windows programs), Adobe RGB (for use with high end graphics apps), High Bright (factory preset for the highest brightness level), Full (for use with ICC color profiles), and DCI (ideal color setting for digital cinema). The Advanced menu lets you go in and tweak uniformity settings, create custom gamma levels, and set up a tile matrix where one image can be displayed over multiple screens (with support for up to 25 monitors). The PA301W’s PIP feature lets you display images from two sources in a picture in picture mode, where a second box appears inside the original desktop, or you can view them in a picture by picture mode, where they sit side by side or above and below one another. For users who would rather make these adjustments using a mouse and keyboard instead of the function buttons, NEC offers their MultiProfiler software as a free download.

Performance
The PA301W performed wonderfully on my DisplayMate LCD diagnostics tests. Both light and dark grayscale performance was very good; every swatch from the 64-Step Grayscale test displayed perfectly and scaled evenly from dark to light. There was no evidence of compression anywhere on the scale.

Color quality was also outstanding, with no noticeable tinting and no color tracking errors whatsoever. Full screen color samples were uniform well saturated, and swatches from the Color Scales test progressed evenly from one end of the scale to the other. As with the

Like most CCFL backlit monitors, the PA301W isn’t very energy efficient; it used an average of 98-watts while operating in Full mode during my testing, which is pretty much in line with the Dell U3011 (97-watts). Enabling PA301W’s ECO mode-1 lowers the brightness from 220 cd/m2 to 200 cd/m2 and brings the power usage down to 92-watts without causing the screen to become too dim. Using ECO mode-2 brings reduces power usage 69-watts by dimming the brightness to 100 cd/m2, but I found this setting to be a little too dark.

NEC backs the PA301W with a four year warranty that coves parts, labor, and backlighting. It also includes a 48-hour exchange program which guarantees that if a replacement monitor is warranted it will be on your desk within two business days.

Clearly, the NEC MultiSync PA301W is not your typical desktop display. It’s exorbitant price will likely scare off all but the most die-hard enthusiasts with deep pockets. However, for imaging professionals who require spot-on color and grayscale accuracy from a versatile monitor that they can tweak and calibrate to their exact specifications, the PA301W is worth every penny, which is why it is our Editors’ Choice for high-end displays.

As with the Dell U3011 ($1,499 direct, 4 stars), another 30-inch IPS monitor, the PA301W offers excellent viewing angles with no loss of color fidelity while viewing images from an extreme horizontal angle. The panel remained bright when viewed from the top and bottom also, which is particularly important when rotating the screen for portrait mode viewing. Small text from the Scaled Fonts test was legible all the way down to 5.3 points (the smallest font on the test), which is ideal for using the PIP feature or for viewing multiple document pages simultaneously. The panel has a 7-ms (b-w) pixel response, which is perfectly adequate for a professional grade display that focuses on accuracy rather than motion handling. However, it did handle my Far Cry 2 gaming tests without issue; the game played smoothly without any noticeable lag or motion blur.

NEC MultiSync PA301W

excellent

\n\n

Geared toward graphics designers, photo editors, and imaging pros of all stripes, the NEC MultiSync PA301W is the latest addition to NEC’s PA series of professional grade desktop monitors, and it’s a beauty. This 30-inch behemoth delivers very accurate color and grayscale performance and offers a slew of high end features, including a 14-bit LUT (look up table), wide gamut IPS panel technology, a built-in KVM switch, tons of customizable settings, and a fully adjustable stand. Its list price of $2,299 is not for the faint of heart, however.

\n

Design and Features
\nYou’ll need a good deal of desktop real estate for the PA301W. The 30-inch screen sits in a matte black cabinet weighing 27.6 pounds and measuring 4.9 inches deep by 27.1 inches wide, but the stand adds another seven inches to the overall depth.

\n

\nView All 7 Photos in Gallery\n\n

\n

Thin (0.70-inch) bezels frame the IPS panel, which has a maximum resolution of 2560 by 1600 and a 16:10 aspect ratio. On the right side of the lower bezel are power, menu, and input (select) buttons, as well as a left/right navigation rocker and a light sensor that works with NEC’s AmbiBright technology to adjust brightness based on your lighting environment. .

\n

\n

\n

Performance
\nThe PA301W performed wonderfully on my DisplayMate LCD diagnostics tests. Both light and dark grayscale performance was very good; every swatch from the 64-Step Grayscale test displayed perfectly and scaled evenly from dark to light. There was no evidence of compression anywhere on the scale.

\n

Color quality was also outstanding, with no noticeable tinting and no color tracking errors whatsoever. Full screen color samples were uniform well saturated, and swatches from the Color Scales test progressed evenly from one end of the scale to the other.

\n

Like most CCFL backlit monitors, the PA301W isn’t very energy efficient; it used an average of 98-watts while operating in Full mode during my testing, which is pretty much in line with the Dell U3011 (97-watts). Enabling PA301W’s ECO mode-1 lowers the brightness from 220 cd/m2 to 200 cd/m2 and brings the power usage down to 92-watts without causing the screen to become too dim. Highly Anticipated MultiSync PA301W from NEC Display Solutions Makes Its Debut

CHICAGO—(BUSINESS WIRE)—NEC
Display Solutions of America, a leading provider of commercial
LCD display and projector
solutions, announced today the 30-inch MultiSync® PA301W-BK display and
PA301W-BK-SV display with SpectraViewII™ calibration software
and sensor.

Ideal for color-critical applications such as photography, retouching,
video editing and CAD/CAM, the MultiSync PA301W-BK models offer a robust
design with a fully ergonomic stand for added comfort during use. These
high-resolution displays feature an impressive 2560×1600 resolution and
10-bit wide color gamut LCD panel that provides the accurate, vibrant
colors that professionals require. In addition, the MultiSync PA301W
showcases the time-saving features common to the MultiSync PA Series
displays, including the ability to load ICC profiles to emulate custom
color spaces, as well as offering factory-calibrated digital uniformity
correction and five customizable Picture Mode presets.

“If you’re a photographer, designer, videographer, or a serious gamer,
then this is a monitor that you’ll want to take a good look at,” said
Bruce Bicknell of Photoshop User Magazine. “The NEC MultiSync PA301W
really is a game changer for those of us who need to have the most
accurate representation onscreen of our work that we possibly can.” Click
here to read Bicknell’s full MultiSync PA301W product review.

One of the more unique features of the MultiSync PA Series is the
ability to utilize two computers simultaneously through DisplaySync Pro™
and the integrated USB hub, which functions as a KVM device. Adding to
this outstanding feature list, the MultiSync PA301W offers standalone
hardware calibration, for simple display calibration without an attached
computer.

“The addition of the MultiSync PA301W to our professional desktop lineup
brings even more connectivity and color performance to photographers and
other graphics users,” said Art Marshall, Product Manager of
professional and medical desktop monitors at NEC Display Solutions.
“This flagship display, with its high 4-megapixel resolution, four
digital inputs and factory-calibrated color and uniformity, is the new
standard for professional graphics, and the praise we’ve received from
the industry has confirmed this.

«NEC’s MultiSync PA301W delivers the performance and features that
professionals demand, including a number of extras that distinguish it
in the 30-inch class,” said Brian Klug, Displays Editor at AnandTech.
“It performed as expected in our display tests, leading the current crop
of 30-inchers in all categories but one.» Click
here to read Klug’s full MultiSync PA301W product review.

«Photographers looking for a wide gamut color display and excellent
uniformity can’t go wrong with the MultiSync PA301W,” said Lloyd
Chambers of www.digilloyd.com
and www.MacPerformanceGuide.com.
“Its color gamut and uniformity are fantastic, and it’s sheer pleasure
to work with it. But even if you’re not a photographer, you’ll love the
working space of 2560 x 1600 and the first-rate ergonomics, with dual
pairs of inputs and USB ports icing on the cake.» Click
here to read Chambers’s full MultiSync PA301W product review.

Additionally, complimentary MultiProfiler™ software, exclusive to the
MultiSync PA Series, provides easy-to-use control over several features
via mouse, including Picture Mode preset, Picture in Picture (PIP) and
Picture by Picture (PBP) window configuration. MultiProfiler also allows
users to manage the monitor’s USB hub and map the various monitor
inputs. The loading of ICC profiles by MultiProfiler helps MultiSync
PA301W users easily create or adjust color modes. MultiProfiler is
compatible with Apple Mac OS 10.3.9 or higher and Microsoft Windows
2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7.

“The NEC PA301W monitor, with its massive color space, high pixel
density, and superb color accuracy, makes my images come alive,” said
David FitzSimmons of FitzSimmons Photography in Bellville, Ohio. “The
SpectraViewII software makes calibration effortless! Using a
dual NEC MultiSync PA301W monitor setup for photo editing gives me one
spacious screen for viewing thumbnail images and another spacious screen
for checking individual photographs at full resolution.

Bibliorum S., 02/01/2020

Advantages: size and resolution, good illumination uniformity

Disadvantages: price

Comment: working with graphics — of course, you don’t need to do a preview in the bridge, you can see the focus anyway)))
But, after all, the main work is with the text … and here 4 megapixels of resolution (which is 2 times more than fullhd) speeds up the work several times)))

Name hidden, 08/12/2019

Advantages: relatively even black and white. There are many modes, but it is unlikely that you will need anything other than srgb to work.

Disadvantages: compared to the black on the handset, it’s a nasty gray and it’s very, very annoying considering the cost. If you shoot with exposure at night, it will be blue. Bad viewing angles. a little from the central axis (cm 15-20max) and the color floats! (if you work together, everyone will have their own colors) :).

Particularly visible on gray. When viewed from the side, the picture is covered with a white veil.
Bad factory calibration.
In this price range, this is very bad!

cm black test attachment http://yadi.sk/d/GvBAJqv02FqWo

Comment: Consider the font size. You can’t move it close, because the corners then go out of a clear field of view, and the edges then lose contrast + heat from the screen to the face (the panel itself warms up to 28 in front (checked), and from a distance of an outstretched hand everything is already very small (much smaller than 24 inches at 1920, which can be moved closer). Also keep in mind that not all fonts and icons in programs can be enlarged. Check in advance. The load on the computer at 2650 is not weak, especially if you are engaged in 3D and often make previews in the usual half of the screen in height (now this is a completely different resolution))). At 1920*1200, for those who think about resizing, everything is large and soapy, like on a tube. It’s unpleasant to work.

cm black test attachment http://yadi.sk/d/GvBAJqv02FqWo

P.S BB on the table now instead of some 30 dell.

User N., 07/16/2019

Pros: By far the best TFT in color for photography. Second only to the old and tried-and-tested Sony 22″ lamp. Not gaming, but photo and video editing makes it fun. Eternal. 30″

Cons: Power consumption. WHAT to do — fuel crisis fact. No OLED

Comment: The best of the past. Thing

Name hidden, 07/06/2019

Pluses: -DO NOT NOTICE!!!!

Disadvantages: -I bought this monitor to work with graphics. But this monitor transmits terrible colors!!! Very bright, strong glow effect! Viewing angles are HORRIBLE!! Does not give factory 178 degrees! You can only sit in front of the monitor, if you sit on the side of the monitor, the whole picture becomes PURPLE!!!

Comment: Do not buy this monitor!

irak n., 02/24/2019

Pros: The monitor is already a professional level. So the characteristics match. I liked that after calibration it keeps the setting for a very long time. Plus nice bonuses — there is a light sensor, and two DisplayPort connections, and many other necessary things, which, unfortunately, not so many manufacturers do so far

Disadvantages: no HDMI port

Comment: The monitor is convenient in the sense that it can be mounted on the wall and placed on the table — in general, both options are convenient -because the monitor is thin — a new sample

Vadim D. , 02/01/2019

Advantages: bright juicy colors, large viewing angle, you can see everything from the side and from above, large diagonal, high-quality assembly

Disadvantages: yes no

Comment: I am a designer, and as soon as I got the opportunity to work from home, I began to work from home and updated my home appliances for this event. I took this monitor and another one, also NEC, but with a smaller diagonal. It transmits colors well, does not distort, you can calibrate the color, in general, everything is convenient. The viewing angle is also good, I did not notice any glare.

NEC MultiSync PA271W Review — Computer Geek

Designed for graphics professionals, photographers and anyone who requires accurate color and grayscale reproduction, the NEC PA271W is a high quality desktop monitor that uses the latest panels and processing technologies to deliver goods. This 27″ monitor with 14-bit LUT (Lookup Table), P-IPS (Professional In-Plane Switching) technology with wide color gamut, high resolution panel (2560×1440) and multiple settings. It’s cheap, and it’s nowhere near as sleek as the latest series of LED-backlit monitors. However, if performance is a priority, the PA271W should be on your short list of pro-level monitors.

Design and Specifications The PA271W uses a CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight rather than the more popular LED backlight, which explains the bulky body. The matte black body is 3.3 inches thick and weighs 21.2 pounds without stand. The stand weighs 8 .8 lbs and offers all the adjustments you’ll ever need, including height, swivel, tilt, and rotation. As with the NEC MultiSync PA301W, this model supports auto-rotation, which changes image orientation when the panel is rotated. It also has mounting VESA standard holes if you want to hang it on the wall.

The screen is framed by thin black bezels. There are buttons on the bottom and right panels that are used to navigate through extensive settings menus. view in portrait mode, the on-screen marks will also rotate.

There are two dual-link DVI ports on the back, a DisplayPort input, two USB upstream ports, and two USB downstream ports. An HDMI port would be nice here. computers with a single keyboard and mouse. One USB downstream port is installed on the right side of the chassis.

As with the NEC PA301W and NEC MultiSync PA241W, the PA271W offers a variety of picture settings. In addition to controls for brightness, contrast, eco mode, and color temperature, there are nine picture presets (sRGB, Adobe RGB, eciRGB, DCI, REC -Bt709, High Bright, Full, DICOM, Programmable), and each preset has its own setting. a menu that allows you to change parameters such as white balance, color gamut, gamma, black level, and uniformity. There is also a 6-axis adjustment option that allows you to adjust the level of hue, saturation, and brightness of each individual color. Other advanced settings include extrinsic compensation. lighting, metamerism (helps match the white point when using a monitor next to a display with a standard gamut), and Color Vision EMU (simulates human visual impairments and is used to evaluate how visually impaired people perceive colors). .

The Tile Matrix function allows you to display the same image on multiple monitors (up to 25), but you will need a distribution amplifier (not included) to send the video signal to each monitor. Several PIP (picture in picture) modes are available with different size and position. You can even automatically rotate the PIP image when you rotate the panel. Like many MultiSync models, the PA271W has a built-in counter that keeps track of the monitor’s carbon footprint and power consumption.

Performance The PA271W passed DisplayMate’s 64-stop grayscale test, clearly displaying all shades of gray from dark to light without noticeable clipping or compression. Color accuracy was also good, but not perfect; as shown in the CIE chart below, red, green, and blue were very close to their ideal CIE coordinates, but not exact (the closer each point is to the corresponding square, the more accurate the color). However, colors appeared uniformly saturated and uniform in the Color Scales and Full Screen Color tests, and there was no sign of tint in grayscale.

The IPS panel provides outstanding viewing angle performance. Color quality did not change when viewed from the side or bottom, and the image remained vibrant. Small text in the Scaled Fonts test (5.3 points) was crisp and easy to read.

The 7ms (black to white) pixel response of the panel adequately handled fast motion video. But this monitor is not the best choice for gamers as it lacks speakers and HDMI inputs. and image clarity was outstanding. 9The 0003

PA271W drew 82W in normal mode, 77W in ECO mode 1 and 50W in ECO mode 2. The latter was too dark for typical office lighting, but ECO 1 looked ok. These numbers can’t compete with LED-backlit monitors, such as the HP Pavilion 27xi ($999 at Amazon) (22W) and the Dell UltraSharp U2713HM ($999 at Amazon) (32W).

Conclusion
With a list price of over $1,100, the NEC MultiSync PA271W is not cheap, but as is usually the case, the premium quality is worth the premium dollars. allows you to fine-tune the panel to your specific imaging needs. These powers make the PA271W an easy choice as our newest Editors’ Choice for large screen monitors. Of course, you can save around $300 with the Dell UltraSharp 2713HM and get more input options, but you don’t get the outstanding grayscale performance that the PA271W offers, and you don’t get that many picture settings, an internal KVM switch, and a screen that automatically rotates the image when the panel is rotated.

    Characteristics

Description NEC MultiSync Monitor PA301W PA301W-BK

It is very comfortable to create with NEC PA301W-BK. It is intended for photographers, designers and all those who work on video editing.

NEC PA301W-BK is equipped with an IPS panel. It guarantees the consistency of color and brightness over the entire screen area. In addition, among the main advantages of the monitor — a high resolution of 2560×1600! This resolution helps to process large video streams more easily.

The ColorComp function guarantees a uniform distribution of brightness over the entire screen area. The ambient light sensor will evaluate the lighting in the room and adjust the brightness of the monitor. This saves money and prevents your eyes from getting tired quickly.

Depending on what content will be broadcast on the screen, the brightness of the image will also be automatically adjusted. The 3D LUT, coupled with separate color space emulation and Picture-in-Picture, helps to accurately translate various light and color conditions onto paper. Moreover, the transfer will always be reliable, even if the paper is used differently.

Optimum combination of crisp and true colors with RGB support will provide the OmniColor function. You can manage and reduce colors automatically along six axes at once.

The TileComp function optimizes the image in multiscreen systems. It will simulate an image outside of the display.

Wide viewing angle allows you to view the NEC PA301W-BK monitor from any angle without getting image distortion.
