Nvidia GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards are the latest (and greatest?) Nvidia GPUs currently available.

With the GPU shortage that plagued the industry all but gone, the price of high-end GPUs has finally stabilized. This makes it an ideal time to upgrade your current GPU to one of the Nvidia RTX 40-series cards.

Here’s everything we know about the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 series.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series: Release date and price 

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 was unveiled on September 20 and began shipping on November 2022 from third-party manufacturers like Asus, Gigabyte, PNY and more. It launched with a $1,199 price tag, which is still its current price. For that, you’ll get 9,728 CUDA cores and 16GB of onboard memory. Nvidia claims it’s more powerful than the 3090 Ti at lower power, and with DLSS 3 can achieve 2x the performance as the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti.

The discontinued GeForce RTX 4080 12GB had 7,680 CUDA cores and 12GB of Micron GDDR6X memory onboard. Nvidia claimed it’s faster than the RTX 3090 Ti with DLSS 3.

Nvidia also unveiled the more powerful GeForce RTX 4090, its new top-of-the-line card. It went on sale earlier than the RTX 4080 (October 12) at a starting price of $1,599. As with the RTX 4080 16GB, Nvidia sold Founders Edition versions of the 4090 alongside configurations sold by third-party vendors like Gigabyte and MSI.

For that $1,599 price tag, you’ll get a massive card with 76 billion transistors, 16,384 CUDA cores and 24GB of Micron GDDR6X memory. Nvidia claims it can consistently deliver up to 4x the performance (when using DLSS 3) of the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti using DLSS 2, as well as promising it can consistently deliver 100 frames per second when gaming at 4K. While Nvidia declined to specify which game(s) were run in 4K to achieve that performance, the CUDA core count alone is enough to impress.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti hit the market on January 5 with an MSRP of $799. As some predicted, this new RTX 4070 Ti GPU looks an awful lot like a rebranded version of the $899 GeForce RTX 4080 12GB GPU that Nvidia announced, then abruptly canceled late in 2022. Based on the specs, the RTX 4070 Ti seems awfully likely that it’s basically the same card Nvidia tried to launch as the RTX 4080 12GB last November.

The RTX 4070 was released on April 12. This GPU costs $599 compared to the $799 RTX 4070 Ti.

The RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti are the most affordable Nvidia GPUs currently available — coming at $299 and $399, respectively. The latter is available now but you’ll have to wait until July for the former.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series: Specs

Per Nvidia’s press release, the RTX 4090 is «the world’s fastest gaming GPU with astonishing power, acoustics and temperature characteristics. » According to the company, in full ray-traced games, the RTX 4090 with DLSS 3 is up to 4 times faster compared to last generation’s RTX 3090 Ti with DLSS 2.

It’s also up to 2 times faster in modern games while maintaining the same 450W power consumption. This GPU features 76 billion transistors, 16,384 CUDA cores and 24GB of high-speed Micron GDDR6X memory. It is capable of consistently delivering over 100 frames per second at 4K resolution gaming, according to NVIDIA.

The RTX 4080 has 9,728 CUDA cores and 16GB of the aforementioned high-speed Micron GDDR6X memory. With DLSS 3, Nvidia claims the card is 2 times as fast in modern games as the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and more powerful than the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti at lower power.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti ships with 7,680 CUDA cores and 12GB of GDDR6X memory, Which puts it on the low end of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 40-series of GPUs, though according to Nvidia, it’s still significantly faster than the last-generation RTX 3090 Ti when you enable DLSS 3 (unique to the 40-series GPUs).

Of course, the discontinued GeForce RTX 4080 12GB also had 7,680 CUDA cores and 12GB of Micron GDDR6X memory onboard.  Hence, it’s pretty clear Nvidia has listened to customer backlash and rebranded the $899 «4080 12GB» as the more reasonable $799 RTX 4070 Ti, cutting the cost by $100 in the process.

The RTX 4070 features 5,888 CUDA Cores and 12GB of GDDR6X memory. It has a TDP of 200, which is less than the 285W of the RTX 4070 Ti.

DLSS 3 is an AI-driven feature that’s meant to boost performance while maintaining solid image quality and responsiveness. As Nvidia said, DLSS 3 adds Optical Multi Frame Generation to generate entirely new frames, and integrates NVIDIA Reflex low latency technology for better responsiveness. DLSS 3 is powered by the new fourth-generation Tensor Cores and Optical Flow Accelerator of the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture, which powers the RTX 40 series.

The new RT cores are capable of delivering two times faster ray-triangle intersection testing. They also include an Opacity Micromap Engine, which speeds up ray tracing of alpha-test geometry by a factor of two. In addition, a Micro-Mesh Engine generates micro-meshes on the fly to generate additional geometry. According to the company, the Micro-Mesh Engine provides the benefits of increased geometric complexity without the traditional performance and storage costs of complex geometries.

If you’re a PC gamer, then the latest Nvidia cards are enough to get excited about. At the moment, RTX cards aren’t as difficult to get as the RTX 30 series, though we have seen some price gouging at certain retailers. Thankfully, prices aren’t nearly as exorbitant as the previous generation.

Generally speaking, if you want a new RTX 40 series card, you should be able to find out at market value. Hopefully, this trend will continue throughout the duration of the GPUs’ lifecycle.

So although the month may change, the year continues the same. So we should expect to see the RTX 50 series launch in the second half of 2024.

Nvidia RTX 50 series price prediction

The pricing of the upcoming RTX 50 series GPUs remains uncertain, but we can speculate based on a few educated guesses. Many gamers have expressed frustration over the high cost of Nvidia’s 40 series GPUs, with some believing that Nvidia took advantage of the Covid situation to increase prices, relying on gamers’ willingness to pay. However, it is yet to be seen if gamers will continue to accept these high prices.

Considering the backlash Nvidia faced with the release of the RTX 40 series GPUs, there is hope that the company will make the 50 series more affordable and accessible to a wider range of users.

There was a $100 difference between the RTX 3090 and the RTX 4090, coming in at $1,499 and $1,599 respectively. If we assume this upward trend to be the norm, we could see the flagship Nvidia RTX 50 series GPU start at $1,699. With the rising cost of materials, this would seem to be the most educated guess at this stage. Again, this is our speculation, nothing is confirmed.

Again, there aren’t many specifications released for the Nvidia RTX 5000 series GPUs. So all we can do is say Nvidia will probably try to increase CUDA core count and develop their RT cores further for better ray tracing performance. The new GPUs are rumored to be based on some form of Blackwell architecture – with a number of SKUs currently up for evaluation. What we are certain of is that Nvidia will want to keep its lead over AMD, especially with their rumored RDNA 4 in the works.

We assume there will be advancements in DLSS before then, so maybe Nvidia will be updating the Tensor cores inside the 5000 series GPU for better AI processing. As is the way of the world right now. RGT also rumors that the generation will have a new SM structure and hyperspeed interlinks. As well as possibly denoising the RT pipeline.

Elsewhere, expect massive improvements in Ray Tracing performance – with a huge gulf between the 30 series and noticeable gains over the 40 series (more on this below). Again, pure speculation but typically we have seen this in prior launches. There may even be more of a move towards 8K gaming, now that the top-end 40 Series models seem to have nailed 4K Ultra both at native 4K and/or with DLSS. We will post any rumors or spec leaks we find down below.

What is MCM (Multi-Chip Module)?

Another part of the specs which could be a major upgrade for the RTX 50 series is the inclusion of Multi-Chip Module technology. This is a more advanced design of semiconductor, which as the name would imply, incorporates multiple small chips (known as chiplets) into one single bundle or chip package. Early reports point towards Nvidia exploring this technology and possibility taking advantage of it for their RTX 50 series GPUs.

The benefits of MCM include better power efficiency, power yields, and thermal design. We look forward to see what Nvidia’s new Blackwell architecture can deliver if combined with this MCM technology.

Currently, there is a lack of published benchmarks for Nvidia’s RTX 5000, and it is unlikely that any will surface shortly. Nevertheless, it is reasonable to anticipate improved performance in both rasterization and ray tracing when compared to GPUs of the present generation.

There will likely be an RTX 50 series GPU, continuing the success of its graphics cards, Nvidia is likely going to continue producing them. When did the RTX 50 series come out?

The Singapore retailer has also listed May 26 as the date the AMD Radeon RX 7600 8Gb graphics card will hit store shelves.

At the end of May, the market will see a revival as not only these two cards will be available, but also a wide range of custom models from various manufacturers. Also, since the launch coincides with the Computex 2023 event, attendees can look forward to new custom options.


The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is expected to use the AD106-350-A1 GPU core, a smaller version of the AD106 graphics chip. According to previous rumors, the card will feature 34 SMs and 4352 CUDA cores, as well as 8/16Gb of GDDR6 memory running at 18Gb/s over a 128-bit interface. The 16Gb version will use the PG19 PCB0 SKU 363.

As you can see, the RTX 4080 came out 2 years after the release of the RTX 3080, which came out 2 years after the release of the RTX 2080. But, if last time the RTX 3070 appeared on the market first, and then RTX 3070 Ti, in the case of the new series, the RTX 4070 Ti came first, and the RTX 4070 still hasn’t got an exact release date. This suggests that the release sequence for new cards will be as follows: RTX 4070 Ti -> RTX 4070 -> RTX 3060 Ti -> RTX 3060. NVIDIA’s new graphics card series outperforms the previous generation by more than 50%. To maintain this trend, the company needs more time to adjust the power of the new graphics card relative to the previous generation and its more powerful brothers, so as to maintain demand for other models, but also provide customers with enough incentive to purchase new equipment.

NVIDIA, like any other large company, wants to get the maximum possible profit from the sale of its products, and therefore will delay the release of the RTX 4060 until the total volume of the planned purchase from retailers reaches the value provided for by the company’s current strategy.

When to wait for the new RTX 4070, RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060

Based on the above, you can not wait for the RTX 4060 before the RTX 4070. If you give more exact dates, then we can assume that the RTX 4070 will be released in the 20s dates of March 2023. So the RTX 4060 may not hit the market until 2024, but the RTX 4060 Ti is bound to hit retail stores before November of this year. At the same time, the power of the entire RTX 40xx line will exceed the previous generation by more than 50% (that is, the RTX 4060 will be 50% more powerful than the RTX 3060, at least). The forecast is presented in more detail in Table 3.
