The GTX 1660 Ti the latest mid-range and mid-priced graphics card for gamers, succeeding the now two year old GTX 1060 6GB. As NVIDIA have tried to imply with their naming convention, performance of this 16 series GPU lies somewhere between their 10 series and 20 series but the 16 does not contain any of the recent RTX cores, which given the lack of RTX ready games, by itself is no hindrance at all. The 1660 Ti features a new TU116 Turing based die, 6GB of VRAM, 1536 CUDA cores and has a 120W TDP which is a remarkably low power draw for its performance. The reference GPU clock speeds are 1500MHz and 1770MHz for base and boost respectively, and manufacturer overclocked speeds will be higher. The 1660 Ti also features Turing NVENC which is far more efficient than CPU encoding and alleviates the need for casual streamers to use a dedicated stream PC. Early benchmarks show that the 1660 Ti has a clear 33% effective speed advantage over its $60 cheaper 1060 6GB predecessor and that it performs just 4% slower than the $80 more expensive GTX 1070 in terms of effective speed. As well as crowding out the direct competition from NVIDIA’s own 1070, at an opening price of $280, the GTX 1660 Ti competes squarely with AMD’s RX 590 ($260) which has an 18% lower effective speed. Perhaps this will be an impetus for AMD to adjust pricing for the RX 590 and offer something more value-led in the mid-range. [Feb ’19 GPUPro]

The GTX 1650 supersedes NVIDIA’s two year old 1050, outperforming it by around 52%. It features a TU117 processor based on the latest Turing architecture, which is a reduced version of the TU116 in the GTX 1660. The 1650 has 896 NVIDIA CUDA Cores, a base/boost clock of 1485/1665 MHz and 4GB of GDDR5 memory running at up to 8Gbps. The reference version has a low (75W) power consumption and higher power variants are available with greater overclocking headroom. At a list price of USD $150, this card is the cheapest Turing based graphics card available, however, in the budget market where “value for money” reigns supreme, AMD’s two year old RX 570 8GB outperforms the 1650 by around 15%, has double the memory (therefore is more future proof) and can often be found cheaper. NVIDIA will have to discount prices significantly in order to draw budget gamers to the GTX 1650. [Apr ’19 GPUPro]

GTX 1650: Which GPU is right for you?

If you’re eyeing one of the top cheap gaming laptops under $1,000, you’re probably going to find yourself at a crossroads between two GPUs: the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and the GTX 1650. But which GPU is the right one for you? To make it easier on you, the GTX 1660 Ti is stronger, but more expensive, while the GTX 1650 is less powerful, but cheaper.

To test the GPUs, we used two HP Pavilion Gaming 15s sporting an Intel Core i7-9750H processor, with one using a GTX 1660 Ti (6GB of VRAM) and the other a GTX 1650 (4GB of VRAM). We tested synthetic graphics benchmarks as well as gaming benchmarks. As far as the battery life is concerned, both systems lasted 5 hours and 26 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery test, so that shouldn’t make a difference.

Here’s how these two GPUs stack up.

Synthetic performance

On the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark, the GTX 1660 Ti scored 170,781, which is only slightly ahead of the GTX 1650, which reached 167,059 (2. 2% increase in performance).

The GTX 1660 Ti made more headway on the 3DMark Fire Strike test, hitting 11,584 over the GTX 1650’s 8,397 (38% increase in performance).

Finally, on the 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra test, the GTX 1650 nailed 2,828, sliding past the GTX 1650’s 1,935 (46.2% increase in performance).

Gaming performance

On the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark (Highest, 1080p), the GTX 1660 Ti hit 46 frames per second, while the GTX 1650 was just playable, at 31 fps (48.4% increase in performance).

The GTX 1660 Ti averaged 43 fps on the Rise of the Tomb Raider test (Very High, 1080p), leaving the GTX 1650 below our 30 fps playability threshold at 29 fps (48.3% increase in performance).

Meanwhile, the difference between the GPUs remained consistent on the Hitman benchmark (Ultra, 1080p), as the GTX 1660 Ti nailed 73 fps over the GTX 1650’s 57 fps (28.1% increase in performance).

The GTX 1660 Ti and the GTX 1650 were still a distance away on the Grand Theft Auto V test (Very High, 1080p), averaging 56 fps and 39 fps, respectively (43. 59% increase in performance).

On the Metro: Last Light benchmark (Ultra, 1080p), the GTX 1660 Ti scored 52 fps, sliding past the GTX 1650, which landed at 37 fps (40.5% increase in performance).

In the sequel, the GTX 1660 Ti managed 36 fps on the Metro: Exodus test (Ultra, 1080p), whereas the GTX 1650 was unplayable at 25 fps (44% increase in performance).

On the Far Cry New Dawn benchmark (Ultra, 1080p), the GTX 1660 Ti and the GTX 1650 ran a tight race, at 62 fps and 54 fps, respectively (14.8% increase in performance).

When it comes to VR, the GTX 1660 Ti hit a 9.2 out of 11 on the SteamVR Performance Test, while the GTX 1650 lagged behind at 5.9 (55.9% increase in performance).

When configuring the Pavilion 15, it costs an extra $270 to go from a GTX 1650 to a GTX 1660 Ti. The current base price for the Pavilion is $749, so that would jump to $1,019, which is a 36.1% increase in price.

Averaging the performance increase of our benchmarks, you’d get a 37. 3% increase in performance for a 36.1% increase in price, making the upgrade worth the price. If you want a GTX 1660 Ti over the GTX 1650, you’ll get exactly what you paid for regarding price for performance.

However, the GTX 1650 still has its place, as the performance you get is still worth the price if you’re looking to pay under $1,000.

In your next laptop, which graphics should you choose? Is it worth paying more for the Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti or the Nvidia GTX 1650? We’ll look at the differences in gaming performance in this comparison to help you decide which to get in your next laptop.

I’m using the MSI GF63 Thin for the GTX 1650 and the ASUS ROG Strix G Gaming Laptop for the GTX 1660 Ti in this comparison.

Both laptops have the same i5-9300H processor and 8GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM.

The only difference between them is that one has GTX 1650 and the other has GTX 1660 ti. So it’s a bit of a best-case scenario for a GPU comparison.

Expect different outcomes depending on the configuration.

In terms of battery life, both systems lasted around 5 hours, so there shouldn’t be much of a difference.

GTX 1650 vs 1660 Ti: Performance

I have tested 10 Games at 1080p and 1440p.

1. ANTHEM

Anthem was tested with the built in benchmark using ultra quality. At 1080p the 1660 Ti is scoring 50.7% higher average FPS compared to the 1650 in this game. At 1440p the 1660 Ti is now getting 52% higher average FPS.

2. APEX LEGENDS

Apex Legends was also tested using the built in benchmark, and there were some fairly big gains in this test with the GTX 1660 Ti. At 1080p the 1660 Ti was getting 50% higher average FPS and 52% higher average FPS at 1440p.

3. BODERLANDS 3

Boderlands 3 was tested using the built in benchmark at ultra settings. At 1080p there was a 41% improvement to average FPS then 41.8% improvement at 1440p.41

4. F1 2019

F1 2019 was tested with the built in benchmark using ultra quality preset. At 1080p we’re looking at a 42% improvement to average FPS with the 1660 Ti. At 1440p this slightly lowers to a 41% boost.

5. FAR CRY NEW DAWN

Far Cry New Dawn was tested using the built in benchmark with ultra quality. At 1080p the 1660 Ti was getting 49% higher average FPS. With the resolution set to 1440p the 1660 Ti was now getting 50% higher average FPS.

6. GEARS OF WAR 5

Gears of War 5 is a resource intensive game, and I can play it alright with a solid 30 FPS, and I didn’t find it too bad even at 1440p with ultra quality on the 1650, though I would of course use lower settings to improve the frame rate. Anyway at 1080p the 1660 Ti was 44% higher in terms of average FPS, and then 41% better at 1440p.

Greedfall was tested using the built in benchmark with ultra quality. At both resolutions, the 1660 Ti was around 41% faster.

8. METRO EXODUS

Metro Exodus was also tested using the built in benchmark. At the bottom of the graph for our 1440p results the GTX 1660 Ti was getting almost 37% higher average frame rate when compared to the 1650. At 1080p there was 40% improvement.

9. RESIDENT EVIL 2

Resident Evil 2 was tested using the built in benchmark at ultra quality. At 1080p there’s a 39% boost to average FPS when we use the RTX 1660 Ti and a 40% improvement at 1440p.

10. WORLD WAR Z

World War Z was tested with the Ulletical FPS benchmark, and at 1080p there was a 42% improvement to average FPS and 42.8% at 1440p.

GTX 1650 vs 1660 Ti: Sythetic Performance

The GTX 1660 Ti scored 170,781 on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark, just ahead of the GTX 1650, which scored 167,059 points (2.2 percent increase in performance).

The GTX 1660 Ti outperformed the GTX 1650 in the 3DMark Fire Strike test, scoring 11,584 compared to 8,397 for the GTX 1650. (38 percent increase in performance).

Finally, the GTX 1650 scored 2,828, surpassing the GTX 1650’s 1,935 on the 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra test (46.2 percent increase in performance).

GTX 1650 vs 1660 Ti: Which is Better? 

My MSI GF63 Thin with 1650 costs $700, while the 1660 Ti modei costs $400 more; however, there are other differences in specs. The 1660 Ti is 57.1 percent more expensive in this case. There are also models that are less expensive. 

Overall, I believe that the GTX 1660 Ti is more powerful and expensive, and that every 1660 Ti model will be more expensive than the GTX 1650 models.

However, for the time being, the 1660 Ti appears to be a viable option for a gaming laptop. Don’t get me wrong, the 1650 could play modern games with reasonable settings, but if you can afford it, I think the 1660 Ti is well worth it.

In addition, the effects of water have improved and the waves from the movement now have a three-dimensional shape, and in general the interaction with water is better.
