A Closer Look At The GeForce GTX460
The PCB on the reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 video card measures 8.25 inches in length
and the card stands at 4.376 inches tall. The card is a dual-slot cooling design for maximum cooling performance.
Flipping the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 video card video card over we don’t find too
many interesting things, but the card does have a back plate on it behind the GPU that has the only four screws used to hold the GPU cooler and shroud to the PCB. The reference design has eight other screw holes on it, but none were being used. It will be interested to see if retail board partners will utilize these mounting holes for different GPU coolers.
Notice that along the top edge of the GeForce GTX 460 that one SLI connector is placed on the card. This means that SLI and 3D Vision Surround configurations are supported, but it will not be able to run triple-SLI ever.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 video card requires a 450 Watt or greater
power supply with a
minimum of 24 Amps on the +12 volt rail. It also requires that the power
supply has two 6-pin PCI Express power connectors for proper connection.
It should be noted that
the NVIDIA minimum system power requirement based is based on a PC
configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz CPU. If you are wanting to run SLI we are not sure the exact specifications, but an educated guess would say that a 500 Watt or greater power supply would be needed.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 GDDR5 graphics card has a pair of
dual-link DVI-I outputs along with a mini-HDMI output header. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 features enhanced audio support over HDMI, this includes bitstreaming support for both Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio over HDMI. Notice that the cooling fan used on the GeForce GTX 460 extends past the plastic housing. We were told it was designed this way to help pull in cooler air from outside the fan shroud. This is a very interesting design and not one that we have seen on any reference card in the past decade.
Here is a closer look at the center mounted 75mm fan that NVIDIA is using to keep the GTX460 cool, but with little fan noise. Under the 75mm cooling fan, NVIDIA is using a radial curved bifurcated fin heatsink design on the GeForce GTX 460 video card. This design is not new to us, as many years ago Intel began using this fin design on reference boxed CPU HSFs.
No review would be complete without a look under the hood of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 video card, so we removed the four screws that hold the heat sink onto the GPU and off came the entire assembly. To remove the GPU cooler from the shroud we just needed to remove four more screws.
The GPU cooler used on the GeForce GTX 460 768MB and 1GB cards doesn’t look that big from the outside, but once you remove it from the fan shroud you can see that it is rather large. The two copper heat pipes also extend out to two separate stacks of aluminum cooling fins to better dissipate the heat generated from the GF104 die.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 doesn’t use the GF100 ‘Fermi’ core like on the GTX 480/470/465, but rather the new GF104 ‘Fermi’ based derivative. The core is covered with a heat spreader as is rather large as you can see from the image above. The markings on the GF104 core read ‘GF104-300-KB-A1’ on our NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 768MB reference design.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 768MB reference card uses six Samsung GDDR5 memory ICs that are part number K4G10325FE-HC05. Each one of the ICs are 128MB in size and that is how the card reaches its 768MB frame buffer. If you look at the picture of the front of the PCB with the cooler removed you’ll notice that two memory IC locations are missing. On cards with 1024MB of memory two more ICs are included, so that brings the total up to eight 128MB GDDR5 memory ICs, which is how the 1GB cards have 1024MB of frame buffer. The PCB’s and GPU Cooler remains the same on both GeForce GTX 460 video cards. Let’s take a look at the test system and look at some performance numbers!

Introduction
Over the last 12 months, nVidia have been all about one thing — delays. Month after month, I’m sure many of you had waited for the range topping GeForce GTX 470 and 480 graphics cards. Indeed, nVidia were late to the DirectX 11 party but today no one seems to care. The bottom line is that team green have taken back the performance crown and are succeeding in their catch up endeavours. Not so long ago, we also saw the release of nVidia’s eyefinity competition, known as 3D Vision and Surround. Step by step, it may seem that light is at the end of the tunnel.
One slight problem though. Not everyone on the market today can afford to drop upwards of £300 on a new DX11 graphics card. With ATi enjoying healthy sales figures from Radeon HD 5670, 5750 and 5770 SKUs, it is about time that nVidia returned with some more competition. Today we are pleased to present to you exactly that; meet the nVidia GeForce GTX 460.
I have lied slightly, in that nVidia already have a «mid range» offering on the market today known as the GTX 465. As my colleague highlighted, the cut down GTX 470/480 graphics card suffered from all of the power and heat based issues of its larger siblings but without any of the performance that made them worthwhile. To make matters worse, it is priced well above the £200 mark, making it terrible value for money. Not good news at all.
This is where the GTX 460 comes into the picture. Like the observant chaps that nVidia are, they went away and reworked the GF100 architecture to offer a native mid range graphics card. That’s right, no added baggage and no inflated price tags. I think we’re all eager to see what it has to offer so let’s jump straight to the specifications.

First of all, we would like to make it clear that there are two versions of the GTX 460. If you decide to save £30 and purchase the 768MB version, not only will you lose out on 256MB video memory, data will be transmitted via a slightly narrower memory interface. It remains to be seen if this causes significant harm to performance but it’s safe to say that downgrades such as these are never good news.
Next, I would like to point out the specifications of the GTX 460 relative to the preceding GTX 465. Despite a £80 and £40 price difference, the GTX 460 has just 16 less stream processors but considerably higher memory, shader and core clocks. Is that value for money we smell? Let’s find out.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 graphics card based on Fermi architecture has 1950 million transistors, tech. 40 nm process. The frequency of the graphics core is 675 MHz. In terms of memory, 1 GB is installed here. DDR5, 900 MHz frequency and with a maximum bandwidth of 86.4 Gb / s. The texture size is 37.8 GTexels/s. FLOPS is 877.3.
In tests, the video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 showed itself as follows — according to the Passmark benchmark, the model scored 2240 points. At the same time, the maximum number of points for today is 260261 points. According to the 3DMark benchmark, the video card scored 2519 points out of 49575 possible.
Directx version — 12. OpenGL version — 4.6.
In terms of compatibility, the video card is connected via the PCIe 2.0 x16 interface. Regarding cooling, here the heat dissipation requirement is 160 watts.
In our tests, the video card scores 260828 points.
