This is Tesla architecture desktop card based on 80 nm manufacturing process and primarily aimed at gamers. 256 MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 0.8 GHz are supplied, and together with 128 Bit memory interface this creates a bandwidth of 12.8 GB/s.

Compatibility-wise, this is single-slot card attached via PCIe 1.0 x16 interface. Its manufacturer default version has a length of 229 mm. No additional power connector is required, and power consumption is at 30 Watt.

    Budget video cards for DirectX 10 from NVidia are gradually filling the market. But as we could see in the recent testing of the GeForce 8600GT, the price of such cards doesn’t match their performance yet.

    Next in line is the youngest model of the 8th series — GeForce 8500 GT. In this test, the video card GeForce 8500GT from XpertVision will be considered in comparison with competitors. We have not forgotten about overclocking.

    Acquaintance with this card began with a small curiosity. The fact is that the XpertVision GeForce 8500GT adapter was packed in a small box from GeForce 8600GT already familiar to us from the last article, as the label on the front side of the package proudly stated. Only a sticker on the side part spoke about the true contents.

    The video card itself is made on green textolite and has a familiar proprietary cooler.

    The standard specifications of the GeForce 8500GT are as follows:

    • Core: G86
    • Process technology: 80 nm

    • Number of stream processors: 16 pcs
    • Number of TMUs: 8 pcs
    • Number of ROPs: 8 pcs
    • Number of bilinear filter units: 8 pcs
    • Memory frequency (DDR): 800 MHz
    • Memory bus width: 128 bits (two independent controllers 64 bits wide)
    • Memory type and size: 256 MB GDDR2

    XpertVision card operates at 460/800 MHz. The chip runs at 10MHz above the standard, and the stream processors at 920MHz, which is also above the reference frequency.

    The card has 256MB of GDDR2 memory from Hynix, with an access time of 2.5 ns, which corresponds to the standard 800 MHz.

    The cooling system does not differ from that on GeForce 8600GT cards from XpertVision. The same ribbed heatsink and quiet fan. On the back side, the cooler is fixed with latches to the pressure plate. There is a warranty sticker on the plate, which prevents the removal of the original cooling system.

    Remembering the high frequencies of the GeForce 8600GT/GTS, we can hope for a good overclocking of the video core. For overclocking, the ATITool program was used. The same utility was also tested for stability at higher frequencies. The memory frequency reached a stable 430 (860) MHz, which is not an outstanding result, but for this memory it is quite a normal result without raising the voltage. The chip was able to overclock to 750 MHz, but due to unstable operation, it had to be limited to 730 MHz. Thus, the frequency increase was 7.5% for the memory and as much as 57% for the chip!

    At the same time, the native cooling system did its job perfectly. Chip temperature in idle was at the level of 45°C, under load it reached 57°C. Even during overclocking, in tests and games, the temperature did not exceed 63 ° C.

    Recently, NVidia introduced the new ForceWare 158.22 drivers, which should have significantly increased the performance of video cards based on the G84 and G86. In the very same set was a disk with drivers version 101.02. In order to be convinced of the increase in performance of the new ForceWare, the card was tested on both versions. As will be seen below, there is indeed an increase, so testing of the overclocked video card was already carried out with ForceWare 158.22.

    For performance comparison, the following video cards were used in testing:

    • ASUS Radeon X1600 Pro 256MB
    • Inno3D GeForce 7600GS 256 MB
    • XpertVision GeForce 7600GT 256MB
    • XpertVision GeForce 8600GT 256MB

    Video adapters from ASUS and Inno3D worked at low frequencies from memory, which were manually raised to the appropriate 800 MHz.

    The cost of the GeForce 8500GT is currently slightly higher than that of the Radeon X1600Pro and GeForce 7600GS, which are the main competitors for the instance under consideration. The second two participants were selected for performance comparison with overclocked GeForce 8500GT.

    Test configuration is as follows:

    • Processor: Sempron 3100(1.8GHz)+ @2.4GHz

    The first tests were 3DMark 2005 and 2006.

    As you can see in the diagram, in 2005 the «brand» GeForce 8500GT shows a complete advantage over the 1600Pro and 7600GS, in 2006 it is inferior to the NVidia variant represented by the previous generation chipset. New drivers give an increase of about 5%. The lead of the older brother on the G84, 8600GT, is almost twice as large. This is not surprising, because there are exactly two times fewer universal pipelines and texture units on the 8500GT. But with overclocking, the figures tend to the result of 7600GT, and in 3DMark 2005 they even overtake it. The gain from overclocking is 30-35%, which is pretty good. But decent results in synthetic tests can turn into failures in gaming ones, as happened with GeForce 8600GT.

    The first game test is Half-Life 2: Episode One

    Resolution 1280×1024 at AA4x and AF16x. All graphics quality settings are at maximum. Average fps was measured using the Fraps program.

    And here the GeForce 8500GT immediately find themselves in the last place, overclocking increases the average frame rate by 30%, but it is not even possible to catch up with the 7600GS. By the way, this is the only game in which the result of 8500GT on 158.22 drivers turned out to be slightly worse than on the old ForceWare 91.31.

    The next test is the popular shooter F. E.A.R.

    The game has a built-in benchmark, which was used for testing. The resolution is set to 1280×960, AF16x, AA4x, maximum detail, soft shadows enabled.

    The new drivers again show a slight performance boost that is on par with the Radeon X1600Pro. The lag behind GeForce 7600GS is compensated by overclocking, which in this game gives a 22% increase in performance relative to the nominal frequencies.

    The next test is Oblivion.

    Resolution 1280×1024. All shadows and draw distance at maximum, anisotropic filtering at maximum, anti-aliasing off, HDR on. The data was taken with the Fraps program. The test took place at a location near a lake and a forest, among lush grassy vegetation. It is moments like these that load the video card the most in this game.

    The 8500GT holds up pretty well in this game, showing a slight edge over the X1600 and 7600GS. And with overclocking, it almost reaches the level of 7600GT. The performance gain from overclocking is 42%. As you can see from the diagram, the new 8-series architecture has a significant advantage over the old NVidia cards in this game.

    Next game is Call of Juarez. The game engine actively uses version 3 shaders and HDR lighting. This application ran two tests. The first one is at the game location inside the estate (the last episode of the game). The second test is the IX episode of the game, near the old Indian’s wigwam. The abundance of lush vegetation in the frame causes the frame rate to drop to a minimum. This is the most beautiful level in the game, which loads the graphics card to the maximum.

    Resolution 1280×1024, all shadows and anisotropy at maximum, HDR enabled, anti-aliasing disabled.

    Once again, the newcomer is trailing behind. Fresh drivers allow you to win 10%, making it possible to slightly overtake the X1600. Overclocking gives a huge boost of 50% in the light test and 34% in the hard test.

    Last test — S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Testing was carried out indoors and outdoors. The first test is to measure the average fps in the basement. The second — near the parking lot of stalkers, by the fire. The load on the video card in this test is maximum.

    Resolution 1280×1024, with full dynamic lighting, all shadows enabled, texture and shadow quality at maximum, AF16x filtering, anti-aliasing disabled.

    GeForce 8500GT easily outperforms Radeon X1600Pro, but GeForce 7600GS manages to catch up only with overclocking. Overclocking itself in this game gives an increase of about 30%, and the new driver decently raises the result.

    The GeForce 8500GT uses the G86 graphics chip, which has half as many compute units as the G84. As a result, the lag behind the 8600GT sometimes reaches 80% in games, and in synthetic tests the gap is almost 100%. A smaller number of G86 transistors cause low heat dissipation and a slightly higher overclocking potential. And if a sufficient number of megahertz can still be squeezed out of the core, then GDDR2 memory is the bottleneck of this card.

    NVidia programmers did a good job and new drivers increase performance by 5-10%. So it is recommended to immediately install ForceWare 158.22 instead of native drivers.

    Currently cards based on GeForce 8500GT are sold for about $10-15 more than Radeon X1600 Pro and GeForce 7600GS. If the first novice is not inferior and often overtakes a little (without overclocking), then the predecessor from the 7-series is unconditionally losing ground. Sometimes this lag compensates for overclocking. According to the test results, it is clear that in the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. new NVidia video cards are significantly inferior to the «oldies». But in Oblivion and Call of Juares the situation is absolutely opposite, here G84 and G86 feel much better. In these games, overclocking also gives the maximum performance boost, allowing the 8500GT to almost catch up with the former flagship middle-end 7600GT.
