What Is a CRAC Unit? Computer Room Air Conditioning Monitoring

Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) are cooling units for computer rooms. As the equipment in your computer room becomes more complex and compact, computer rooms are watching their power draw and heat generation quickly rise. The increase in computer room power consumption, density, and heat generation requires a more exact approach to a computer or IT room air conditioning design than ever before.

Computer equipment room or data center cooling used to be a relatively painless affair. When data centers were using less power and generating less heat per square foot, a technician or administrator could simply offset the heat from equipment with additional CRAC units. Simply pumping cold air in the room was enough of a cooling solution to bring down the temperature.

Now, however, that proves to be a feeble way to cool your computer room. Hot air is generated by computer room equipment quickly. Simply turning the thermostat down doesn’t offer the cooling you need to safeguard your equipment. Cool air distribution must occur to ensure that heat is displaced.

Keeping the Modern Computer Room Cool

To achieve an effective computer air conditioning system, many technicians are placing racks in hot and cold configurations.

They place their computers and racks on raised floors, two tiles apart, with their air intakes facing each other. The CRAC cooling system pumps cool air through perforated floor tiles between the racks, the computers and racks intake the cool air and exhaust hot air into the opposing hot aisle. Computer room air conditioning units on the floor then pull in the hot air exhausted into the hot aisles, and release it underneath the floor tiles, completing the cycle.

In this way, a CRAC unit air handler can keep cool air running through the system and help keep a steady airflow through the environment.

It’s even become common to take advantage of the space above computers and racks and make another «hot aisle» of the room’s ceiling, where heat normally escapes and hovers. To keep the whole computer room cool, technicians advocate turning the area above racks into a hot air plenum by placing ducts and more CRAC units. Hot air escapes into the plenum to be pushed back into the system, below the floor, where it can be cooled and released back into the system.

This works for your computer room by removing hot air from the data center. Bringing in more hot return-air helps the heat exchangers in the CRAC units produce colder air to pump out to the computer room floor.

Monitoring Devices for Your Modern Computer Room

Of course, monitoring the quality of the air conditioning in the computer room means much more than simply monitoring the CRAC unit components themselves. Even if they’re working, there’s no guarantee that the cool air they pump into the environment is making it to your equipment. And since there’s no guarantee of homogenized equipment across the computer room, it’s likely that you’ll have hot and cold spots.

There are two main things you’ll have to check to ensure that your CRAC units are working properly and keeping your computer room cool. First, you’ll have to check the airflow both above and below the floor. Then, you’ll have to check the air temperature throughout the room to find which areas are hot and which areas are cold. Fortunately, there are a number of small devices that can fit in line with your computers and monitor your computer room’s environment.

That’s because varying equipment will emit varying amounts of hot air, and because air is simply a hard element to control. You could simply install monitoring devices individually with your cabinets, so you can monitor every individual cabinet, thereby giving you a good overall view of the computer room environment.

What Is a Smart Air Conditioner?

To be considered smart, an air conditioner needs to have a Wi-Fi radio so it can connect to an app, allowing you to control and monitor it from your phone or tablet. No matter where you are, smart air conditioners let you do things like adjust the target temperature, change the fan speed, and turn them on and off. Many also let you set a cooling schedule, so they will kick on at a designated time. And some offer support for Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant voice commands.  

Some models even offer energy usage reports, and can use your phone’s location services to cool down rooms before you arrive. That way, you’re not wasting energy—and money—cooling an empty room when you aren’t there.

How Do I Calculate What Size Air Conditioner I Need?

Before purchasing any air conditioner, it’s important to figure out what size unit you need. If it’s too small, it will have to work harder to reach the target temperature, wasting energy. If it’s too big, it will cool the room before sucking out moisture, leaving you feeling clammy.

Figuring out the correct size AC for your room involves some math, but it’s pretty easy. First, measure the length and width of the room you want to cool, then multiply those numbers to calculate the square footage. 

In general, you want 20 to 25 British Thermal Units (BTUs) of cooling power for every square foot. So, multiply the square footage of your room by 20 to get the minimum size air conditioner that will work in your space. If your room is 500 square feet, for instance, you’ll want an air conditioner with 10,000 BTUs. If you have high ceilings and large windows, you may need more cooling power. 

Energy Star recommends(Opens in a new window) increasing capacity by 10 percent if the room is very sunny, reducing it by 10 percent if it’s heavily shaded, adding 600 BTUs if more than two people regularly occupy the room, and increasing capacity by 4,000 BTUs if the unit is located in a kitchen.

Which Is Better, Portable or Window Air Conditioners?

When selecting a smart air conditioner, you’ll need to decide whether you want a portable or window unit. Both have their pros and cons. Portable units can be moved from room to room, but they take up floor space, and require a bulky exhaust hose. Window units can be a pain to install and block out your view, but are far more discreet than portable units. 

Another option is to purchase a retrofit device to make your basic air conditioner smart. If you already have a working AC, you might want to consider a device like the Sensibo Sky, which brings remote phone control and other connected features to your old traditional unit. As an IT facilities manager, you should know that a PC air conditioning system for a high-performance data center is essential for business success.

Is air conditioning bad for electronics? No. Proper air conditioning will end the problem of dealing with high temperatures, as they stabilize the climate by leaving a cool environment. The PC air conditioning must be powerful and according to the space to be heated. The recommended optimum temperature is 20 to 25 °C for comfort.

Suppose the environment exceeds 26 °C, the risks of system collapse increase. If the room cannot be ventilated on days of 30 °C, it is advisable to switch off or use the equipment as little as possible.

How does a CRAC unit work

In a computer room, there is usually an air conditioning unit, which is a device that monitors the temperature and humidity in a computer room and the distribution of air in the room. The central system of your home’s air ducts draws warm air in from the furnace or air handler.

During cooling, air passes over an evaporator coil, usually located on top of your furnace. As heat is removed from the coil, it is absorbed by the refrigerant. What is a computer room air conditioning (CRAC) unit?

A computer room air conditioning (CRAC) unit is a device that monitors and maintains the temperature, air distribution and humidity in a data center, network or server room. CRAC units replace the air-conditioning units used in the past to cool data centers. By comparison, CRAC systems have better air filtration, better humidity control mechanisms and higher airflow than typical AC systems.

CRAC units help prevent low humidity and water vapor from forming. Low humidity can cause static electricity buildup, which can damage electronics, and water vapor buildup, which can cause short circuits and corrode equipment.

CRAC units work via a refrigeration cycle where air is blown over a cooling coil filled with refrigerant. Refrigerant in the cooling coil is kept cold by a compressor. Excess heat is expelled as air, water or a glycol mixture. Older CRAC units can only turn on and off, while newer units enable different airflow variations.

There are a variety of ways that CRAC units can be situated. One popular CRAC setup is having cooling air dispensed through an elevated floor. Also called raised flooring, the cooled air rises through the perforated floor sections, forming cold aisles. The cold air flows through the racks, where it picks up heat before exiting from the rear of the racks. The warm exit air forms hot aisles behind the racks, and the hot air returns to the CRAC intakes, which are positioned above the floor.

Raised floor cooling in data centers forces cool airflow upward through the floor, up past servers and into a CRAC intake where the air is cooled.

Components of a CRAC unit

CRAC units include the following components:

  • Refrigerant. This is a chemical compound that is used as a coolant in CRAC and air conditioners.
  • Cooling coils. Also called evaporator coils, refrigerant flows through the cooling coils to cool the air.
  • Compressors. This keeps the refrigerant running through the coil cool.
  • Air filters. These help catch the accumulation of dirt or dust that travels through a CRAC unit.
  • Electronically commutated (EC) fans. EC fans blow cool air while producing less heat with high efficiency.
  • Humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Although these are optional in CRAC systems, humidifiers increase the amount of moisture in the air, while dehumidifiers remove water vapor from the air.

What are the differences between CRAC and CRAH units?

Computer room air handler (CRAH) units are another data center cooling device. The main difference between CRAH and CRAC units is how they cool their surrounding environments. CRAC units use both refrigerants and compressors, while CRAH units use chilled water and control valves.

CRAH units use fans to blow air over cooling coils. Instead of the coils being filled with refrigerant, however, they’re filled with chilled water. Warm air from the data center room is drawn back into the CRAH unit, passing over the chilled water coils. The heat transfers from the air to the water, where the water then returns to a chiller.

Because CRAH units don’t need a compressor, they use less energy and are more efficient when compared to CRAC units. This makes CRAH units more suitable for sustainable data centers.

CRAC units are ideal for data centers with electrical loads of 200 kilowatts (kW) or less. Meanwhile, CRAH units are designed for data centers with electrical loads of 200 kW or more. CRAH units are also ideal for environments with higher availability requirements.

As a facility manager, you know a top-performing computer room air conditioning system is essential to commercial success. So let’s take a look at what can happen if the computer room air conditioning is not functioning at a high level.

The two H’s that can hurt computer operations: Heat & Humidity

Has your computer ever operated at an annoyingly slow rate or randomly shut down when you are in the middle of an important work-related task? A computer working at a glacial pace or shutting down unexpectedly could be the result of overheating. Such technological events can slow down business or bring it to a halt altogether, which will not make a business owner or employees happy.

The electronic components inside a computer operate at a certain current produced by low voltage. Even a small voltage fluctuation can have a deleterious effect on the computer’s components. The computer’s central processing unit (CPU), which carries out the instructions of a computer program, is the most vulnerable to overheating. The computer’s motherboard, also known as a mainboard, which provides for communication among the different electronic components, has a temperature sensor and will instruct the CPU and other components such as the hard drive to slow down or shut down if overheating continues.

As you probably learned in an elementary first aid or science class or through an unfortunate firsthand experience, water and electricity don’t mix. When they do it can yield painful results. Computer components exposed to extreme humidity on a consistent basis can corrode and eventually break down. If high humidity inside your computer produces condensation, your computer could short-circuit. If your computer short-circuits, you could lose data and damage could occur to some computer components. Humidity levels should be kept between 45 and 60-percent, which should be easily attainable if you have a properly designed and maintained computer room air conditioning.

Computer room air conditioning choices

As a facility manager with so many responsibilities, you can’t be expected to be an HVAC expert, too. As you probably know, there are many choices to be made to meet the specialized climate needs for computer server room air conditioning and computer room air conditioning, sometimes referred to as CRAC.

CRAC crash course

More sophisticated computer room air conditioning units have replaced the air conditioning technology that was used to cool data rooms in the past. These computer room air conditioning units are more technologically advanced and do more than just control climate. These units are capable of maintaining and monitoring temperature, humidity and airflow.

Traditionally, computer room air conditioning and server room air conditioning have been room-based cooling, providing the entire room with cool air from centralized units at one end. This type of setup usually serves low density areas. Density is measured by peak kilowatt load. The Association for Computer Operations Management (AFCOM) tiers density into four ranges – low is considered up to 4kW per rack; medium from 5kW to 8kW; high from 8kW to 15kW; and extreme, more than 16 kW per rack.

One design for computer room air conditioning is to position the CRAC units around the perimeter of the computer room. In this design, the devices pull air from the top of the room, cool the air, push the air downward and release it through an elevated perforated floor, which forms a cold aisle. The cold air gets sucked into the servers, where heat is picked up from the server components. The heated air is released out the rear of the server racks, which forms a hot aisle. The heated air returns to the CRAC intakes where a plenum, which is an air distribution box, will process the hot air.

Rack them up or row them

With a row-oriented computer room design, the CRAC units are committed to a row of computer equipment. The CRAC units can be mounted among the information technology (IT) racks, above the racks or mounted under the floor. A row-based cooling solution has shorter and more defined airflow paths than a room-based system. A row-oriented design is used in both high and extremely high density areas.
