    The ALC650 is an 18-bit, full duplex AC’97 2.2 compatible stereo audio CODEC designed for PC multimedia systems, including host/soft audio and AMR/CNR based designs. The ALC650 incorporates proprietary converter technology to achieve a high SNR, greater than 90 dB. The ALC650 AC’97 CODEC supports multiple CODEC extensions with independent variable sampling rates and built-in 3D effects. The ALC650 CODEC provides three pairs of stereo outputs with independent volume controls, a mono output, and multiple stereo and mono inputs, along with flexible mixing, gain and mute functions to provide a complete integrated audio solution for PCs.

    The digital interface circuitry of the ALC650 CODEC operates from a 3.3V power supply with EAPD (External Amplifier Power Down) control for use in notebook and PC applications. The ALC650 integrates a 50mW/20ohm headset audio amplifier into the CODEC, which can save BOM costs. The ALC650 also supports an AC’97 2.2 compliant SPDIF out function which allows easy connection of the PC to consumer electronic products, such as AC3 decoder/speaker and minidisk. The ALC650 CODEC supports host/soft audio from Intel 810/815/820/845 chipsets as well as audio controller based VIA/SIS/ALI chipsets. Bundled Windows series drivers (Win95/98/ME/2000/XP/NT) and sound effect utilities (supporting Karaoke, emulation of 26 sound environments, and 10-band equalizer) provide a more comprehensive entertainment package for PC users. Finally, internal PLL circuits generate required timing signals, eliminating the need for external clocking devices.

    The second life of a PCI sound card in a new PC

    Hello. Today I want to talk about a very useful adapter from the modern PCI-E interface to the outdated PCI, motherboards with which have not been produced for quite a long time (we are talking about mass models).
    The adapter allows, when upgrading a PC to a new one, not to throw out expansion cards that work with the PCI bus.
    For example, you have a good sound card, the work of which suits you better than the codec built into the new motherboard (although the same built-in realtecs are now very peppy, but there is a dependence on decoupling, the built-in may work worse with high-impedance headphones, etc. .d.). nine0003
    Those. the new one, which is built into the motherboard and does not require an additional purchase of a separate card, is not always better than the old card (which completely suits the owner, has already been bought earlier, and will just lie dead weight now).
    The only point is that there should still be support for firewood for the new OS, since it is unlikely that anyone will install Windows XP or Windows 7 assembled in 2022 on a new PC.
    It was the presence of a good Asus Xonar D1 sound card, and the need to install it in my main PC (where there are no PCI buses, although it has been assembled for a long time), that prompted me to buy this adapter. nine0009

    This audio card did not stay with me from an old PC, but was purchased this year for testing BT DAC from Ugreen, due to the optimal characteristics of the line-in, for reasonable money, and I have long wanted to feel a good sound system.

    The card is of course old, but according to the parameters and requirements for 2022, it’s even nothing.
    Initially, I was consciously looking for the PCI version, so if there is a similar card in the ASUS line (Xonar DX), but with a PCI-E interface (the bridge chip is already thrown onto the board of the sound system itself), on the used market it costs 2- 2.5 times more expensive, with similar characteristics, while it also did not come out yesterday. Drivers for modern Windows operating systems are available for both cards (except for Windows 11). nine0003
    The adapter is, of course, a collective farm option, but it is much cheaper than a card with a PCI-E interface, and it’s not even a bad option for “testing” the sound system itself, and for other expansion cards, in theory, it can come in handy.

    As you can see, there is a molex supplying an additional voltage of 5V and 12V to the adapter. The adapter is based on the ASM1083 chip (x1 PCI Express to 32-bit PCI Bridge).
    The chip is powered by a voltage of 1.2V from an AMS1117 linear regulator, the input of which is connected to power from the PCI-E bus (3.3V — «+3.3 volt power»). nine0003
    5V is taken from molex, since there is no such voltage on PCI-E. But 3.3V is available on both PCI-E and PCI, respectively, it is taken from PCI-E and goes directly to PCI.

    I did not figure it out right away, because I compared the pinout of the tires and made a measurement with a multimeter after launch (I really wanted to check it as soon as possible).
    From here and the incomprehensible work of the sound system, when I did not immediately connect the additional power supply from the mulex, from which only 5V is taken.
    The sound system was successfully detected by the PC, since its chip apparently sits at 3.3V, the ASM1083 itself was also powered from 3.3V through a step-down stabilizer, but there was no sound, since the rest of the harness apparently already sits at 5V. nine0009

    In theory, you can throw out the mulex and carefully attach a dc-dc step-up adapter to the board, from 3.3V to 5V, and then everything will be powered exclusively from PCI-E (I did not find information about what current can be removed at 3.3V when a cursory search, but I think we have enough with a reserve, the same NVMe SSDs eat no less, and everything is fine there).

    In general, the adapter is made normally, the textolite is thick, the soldering is good, except for the washed flux and the extra power wires that were heavily exposed before soldering, and Chongx electrolytic capacitors. nine0003

    The cutout mounting plate that was already installed on the adapter did not fit and was eventually removed.

    The sound card came with a Low Profile mounting bracket, which was successfully moved to the sound card instead of the standard one, the card was inserted into the adapter, and in this configuration it was successfully installed in the PC case.

    P.S. here in the photo is the second PC, a test collective farm and on ancient hardware, where there is also a PCI, it would be more reasonable to check it on it, since the drivers are already there, and if something goes wrong (which is unlikely, but still) the consequences will not so sad. nine0009

    After applying additional power and turning on the PC, the sound card started up as expected, without any problems, working on this PC just like in the PCI slot. No additional drivers had to be installed, OS Windows 7.

    The adapter is fully functional. Despite the fact that the relevance of PCI-E expansion cards is rapidly declining, sometimes you still need to run some kind of product, in my case, a sound card, for which there are drivers even for Windows 10. For such a scenario, this is a very good purchase, given that the adapter has a relatively low cost, and in my case, even helped me save money when buying Xonar D1, instead of the Xonar DX, which is similar in terms of “sound” stuffing, where the bridge is already installed on the card itself, and not a separate one, as in my case, but everything works similar.
