April 2022 eBay GPU Prices — GPU Prices: Tracking Graphics Cards Sold on eBay
We didn’t manage to write a full update in early May, due to the pending launch of AMD’s RX 6950 XT, RX 6750 XT, and RX 6650 XT. However, to keep our data collection consistent, we did grab the pricing information from eBay and have updated the tables for current and previous generation GPUs below.

April continued the shift toward more GPUs being available at retail, sometimes for lower prices than what you could find on eBay.
There was also a jump in the number of AMD RX 6000-series GPUs sold, along with an increase in the sales of many previous generation GPUs. This suggests a clear beginning of the mining exodus, as miners tried to sell off cards while prices were still high. Alternatively, it might be gamers holding on to older cards finally opting to upgrade. Either way, prices dropped around 15%, month over month.

The GPU shortage appears to have well and truly ended, if market prices are anything to go by. After literally years of insane inflation seeing graphics cards go for double or even triple their retail value, street prices have fallen off a cliff in 2022. A combination of factors appears to be at play, including the long-awaited bursting of the cryptocurrency bubble and an easing of the chip shortage. But the end result is that prices for graphics cards have dropped by almost exactly half in the last year.
That’s according to market data gathered by Jon Peddie Research and analyzed by German site 3DCenter. In the third quarter of 2021 the average selling price of a new desktop GPU rose to an all-time high of $1077 USD, more than tripling in less than two years. The come-down from that precipitous high hasn’t been quite as dramatic, but in 2022 the average price dropped to $643 in the first quarter and $529 in the second.
As PCGamer notes, these figures are for cards sold from manufacturers to retailers, not to final consumers, but they’re a reliable indicator of the market’s direction. At the time of writing, in-demand cards like the GeForce RTX 3070 and the Radeon RX 6700 XT are hovering around their actual MSRP for the first time in almost three years.

There are a lot of factors at play here. As previously stated, the worldwide chip shortage is starting to abate, which affects manufacturing from trucks to tea kettles. And the cryptocurrency market is finally on a major downturn as investors seek out something less volatile heading into a possible recession. (Or possibly they just want a new get-rich-quick scheme, you know how investors are.)
Between this, and the fact that everyone seems to have completed their pandemic PC upgrades, there’s way more stock to go around…which means the scum-sucking scalpers are less interested in gobbling up all the GPUs before anyone else can, too.
We’re also on the precipice of a new generation of graphics cards from both Nvidia and AMD, meaning savvy consumers are waiting for a big purchase. Nvidia is prepping its RTX 40-series for a debut later this month.
In the short term, Nvidia and AMD are in for a rough couple of quarters as both prices and sales return to the stability of the pre-pandemic market. And that’s ignoring a new entry in the market, as Intel prepares its Arc series of GPUs. But that’s good news for consumers, who can finally track down new computer components with relative ease and without pawning a few household appliances. With new high-end hardware arriving, we might even see some actual deals for bargain hunters—though whether you should upgrade your graphics card now or hold out for next-gen GPUs depends on your needs. Regardless, happy days are here again.

At the same time, the company has significantly raised the prices of GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards compared to its predecessors, and in Europe the price increase turned out to be much more significant than in the US.
Image Source: NVIDIA The suggested US prices for the GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080 16GB, and RTX 4080 12GB models are $1,599, $1,199, and $899 (excluding VAT), respectively. For comparison, at the start of sales, the GeForce RTX 3080 10GB video card in the US was estimated at $69.9. It turns out that the most affordable version of the GeForce RTX 4080 is $200 more expensive than its predecessor. In turn, the GeForce RTX 4080 16GB in the US turned out to be $400 more expensive than the GeForce RTX 3080 12GB model. And the flagship GeForce RTX 4090 is priced at $100 more than the GeForce RTX 3090, but $400 cheaper than the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. The situation with recommended prices in Europe is much worse. For example, in Germany, the most affordable new-generation video card — GeForce RTX 4080 12GB — is rated by NVIDIA at 1099 euros (which is approximately equal to $1090)! In turn, the GeForce RTX 4080 16GB and GeForce RTX 4090 received recommended prices of 1469 and 1949 euros, respectively.
Of course, German prices include VAT, which is 19%. However, earlier European prices were not so different from American ones. For example, the already mentioned GeForce RTX 3080 10GB received a recommended price tag of 719 euros in Germany. The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti was even priced in the US and Germany at the same amount 1199, with the only difference being that in the USA it was dollars, and in Germany it was euros. But now the difference has become huge — the European ones turned out to be more than 20% higher than the American ones. And this applies not only to Germany, but to the whole of Europe. Prices for video cards in China have fallen to the bottom, but they are in no hurry to buy
Once upon a time, successful miners could go to the store for an armful of video cards, but times have changed.
Now even a very low price does not guarantee a quick sale of products.
Recent changes in the cryptocurrency market have led to the fact that buying a video card for mining is now a rather long-term investment (according to calculations, some GPUs pay off in about half a century).
Quite recently, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 could be swept off the shelves, although the prices were several times higher than recommended. Now the prices have fallen, sometimes even below the recommended ones.

Now the situation is different: no one is buying new PCs and, moreover, no one is buying new video cards to install in their systems.
