Rtx 2070 or 1080ti: GeForce GTX 1080 Ti vs GeForce RTX 2070 Graphics cards Comparison

GeForce GTX 1080 Ti vs GeForce RTX 2070 Graphics cards Comparison

When comparing GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and GeForce RTX 2070, we look primarily at benchmarks and game tests. But it is not only about the numbers. Often you can find third-party models with higher clock speeds, better cooling, or a customizable RGB lighting. Not all of them will have all the features you need. Another thing to consider is the port selection. Most graphics cards have at least one DisplayPort and HDMI interface, but some monitors require DVI. Before you buy, check the TDP of the graphics card — this characteristic will help you estimate the consumption of the graphics card. You may even have to upgrade your PSU to meet its requirements. An important factor when choosing between GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and GeForce RTX 2070 is the price. Does the additional cost justify the performance hit? Our comparison should help you make the right decision.

Which are the best graphics cards?

Is It Really Faster Than GTX 1080 Ti?

Today I’ll be pitching Nvidia’s latest pair of RTX mid-range graphics cards against their predecessors to see just how fast these new tweaked kids on the block are — namely the RTX 2060 Super (which you can see in my other article) and RTX 2070 Super. You’d be right in thinking the RTX series hasn’t been around long, yet less than 12 months on, Nvidia has ousted a whole new range of graphics cards — the RTX Super series.

Antony Leather

Given how long the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti sat on their thrones, this is a fairly quick launch in the overall scheme of things. In fact, reviewers like myself had less than a week from being told we’d be receiving samples to getting our reviews online and the cards themselves were only announced recently at LA’s E3 a few weeks ago. That wasn’t super at all.

Joking and lack of sleep aside, there’s a simple reason why they’re here, though, and that’s AMD’s
Navi graphics cards. AMD has been fairly focussed in its pitches about the RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT’s performance, taking aim at the RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 respectively. The timing was quite cheeky from Nvidia too, coming in the midst of AMD’s various announcements at E3 and stealing some of Navi’s limelight, plus Nvidia has undercut AMD on the launch schedule, with the disclosure agreement ending today — a full 5 days ahead of Navi.  Anyway, let’s take a look at the specifications, what’s changed and just how fast the RTX 2070 Super is.

Nvidia

What’s better?

Above you can see a detailed breakdown of the RTX 2070 compared to the new RTX 2070 Super, with the latter trumping the former in some key areas. From the top, the RTX 2070 Super actually uses a trimmed down TU104 core that’s used in the RTX 2080. You get more tensor cores, 4 more streaming multiprocessors, 254 extra CUDA cores and significantly higher base and boost frequencies. However, the memory amount and speed remain the same — only the RTX 2060 Super gets a memory upgrade from 6GB to 8GB as well as a memory interface bump, while the RTX 2080 Super boasts faster memory than its predecessor.

Antony Leather

There’s a slight downgrade, though, which is power consumption, which rises from 175W with the RTX 2070 to 215W with the new Super model.  The cooler is identical in terms of performance, but the outside casing now sports a mirror-finished plate with green super logo. It’s a shame that super logo isn’t illuminated like the text on the side, but it’s a fresh new look for Nvidia’s RTX range and in the flesh it looks fantastic.

Pricing/changes

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GeForce RTX 2080 Super GeForce RTX 2070 Super GeForce RTX 2060 Super GeForce RTX 2060
Price Now $999 $699 $499 $399 $349
Available 23rd July 9th July 9th July

To start with we should look at pricing and as far as the RTX 2070 Super goes, things aren’t too bad. We’re looking at an MSRP of $499 (£475 in the UK), while the cheapest RTX 2070’s I could find were around the $479 (£479) mark.   Considering Nvidia’s claims that new cards are up to 20% faster than the originals, that’s not a bad deal, especially in the UK.

The RTX 2060 Super, meanwhile, isn’t quite as cut and dried, as it’s landing at $399, while the cheapest RTX 2060’s out there retail for around $349. That’s a 14% markup for supposedly between 10-20% more gaming grunt, which is maybe not quite such a good deal. However, the RTX 2060 is still an excellent card so what Nvidia is doing here is simply bringing it more into line with the RX 5700, which will cost $379. In short, it’s going to be close, but we need to wait till 7th to compare the new Turing-based cards with their AMD Navi counterparts.

As Nvidia gave me less than a week from announcing samples were inbound to the launch today, this has been a rather tight deadline, so I haven’t been able to include as many tests or information as would otherwise have liked to. Hopefully, though, the performance numbers below give you some idea about where the RTX 2070 Super sits in the market, and just what Navi needs to do to beat it. For those numbers, though, you’ll need to wait till the 7th July.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

There are two things to consider with the RTX 2070 Super — whether it’s quicker than the GTX 1080 Ti as Nvidia claims and how much quicker it is than the RTX 2070. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the former holds true at 1080, while it matches the old card at 1440p and just about at 4K too. However, you’re looking at decent gains of up to 24%, making this a stonking card for the cash whether you use ray-tracing and DLSS or not.

The Division 2

For some reason the GTX 1080 Ti akes a nosedive at 4K despite re-running the tests, so it’s either a driver bug or it just doesn’t handle 4K particularly well in the this game. There were again some sizeable gains against the old RTX card of 22% at 1080p, 23% at 1440p and 20% at 4K, although bear in mind that RTX 2070 result is from a stock card — not a Founders Edition. Even so, it was a win over the GTX 1080 Ti here — so Nvidia’s claims are in part true, although not across the board.

Forza Horizon 4

The Vega 64 has long since dominated here and is simply a AMD-leaning game, but it’s yet another victory for the RTX 2070 Super over the GTX 1080 Ti and decent gains over the RTX 2070 Super of 20% at 1080p, 21% at 1440p and 23% at 4K.

World of Tanks enCore

I’ve included World of Tanks purely from a high frame rate/high refresh rate point of view as it’s a popular free-to-play that also has a professional hard-core following. It’s otherwise very easy to run, but seeing as you need super-high frame rates for the latest high refresh monitors, this data is still useful.

There were gains of 11%,  15% and 14% in the minimum frame rates at 1080p, 1440p and 4K respectively moving from RTX to RTX Super in World of Tanks for the 2070’s, although certainly no reason to upgrade if you own a GTX 1080 Ti, which was still much quicker across the board.

Ray-Tracing has definitely seen a big boost as matched by the Tomb Raider results above and below in the Port Royal ray-tracing benchmark.

Power consumption

Finally, power consumption was around 10W more under load for the system as a whole with the RTX 2070 Super, which is maybe a little less than I was expecting and may well be more in other tests than the 3D Mark Port Royal I used here.

Conclusion

While the RTX 2060 Super proved to be a more powerful card and ultimately a worthy step up over the RTX 2060 for the cash, the RTX 2070 Super is aiming to displace the current RTX 2070 entirely as they sit at the same price tag of around $499. However, you get significantly more performance for the same cash, with even bigger leaps once you start talking ray-tracing and DLSS. Nvidia has done what it needed to not only to make the RTX range more appealing but also give AMD some headaches ahead of its Navi launch too.

The latter I can disclose the performance of on Sunday 7th July and as real-world tests are what counts, I would suggest waiting till then to make your decisions if you’re in the market for a new graphics card. In short, though, the RTX 2070 Super is a great buy, and even better if you’ll be dabbling in DLSS and ray-tracing.

[Sponsored] RTX 2070 vs GTX 1080 Ti: Which Card Performs Better?

Looking at each card’s features, you’ll see that they don’t share many of the same core components.

Out-of-the-box, the 1080 Ti seems to hold the edge over the 2070, but when you dig deeper into the technology, you’ll find that the 2070 is powerful, affordable and can often outperform the 1080 Ti.

Read also: Make sure to check out this guide for the top 9 RTX 2070 graphics cards.

Breaking Down the RTX 2070

The RTX 2070 incorporates NVIDIA’s Turing GPU architecture. Turing allows the RTX to run advanced games thanks to:

  • Real-time ray tracing
  • Programmable shading
  • Artificial intelligence

Ray tracing is vital because it offers a higher level of realism in games. Shadows, lighting and reflections are all more intense thanks to the ray tracing options available.

Turing is the first GPU on the market to offer real-time ray tracing.

  • 8 GB of GDDR6 RAM
  • 2304 CUDA Cores
  • 256-bit memory bus

Processing speeds vary greatly, depending on if the unit is overclocked and the manufacturer. Support for our monitors is standard, and there are also options for virtual reality headsets.

Memory bandwidth is 448GB/s, which is slightly less than the 1080 Ti.

Breaking Down the GTX 1080 Ti

Extreme horsepower, the GTX 1080 Ti is designed to be the flagship graphics card from NVIDIA’s 10-series gaming GPU.

Performance is impeccable, with Pascal offering up to three times the performance of previous graphics cards.

VR Ready, this model does not come with real-time ray tracing, which gives the RTX 2070 an immediate advantage.

What this model does offer is:

  • 11 GB GDDR5X RAM
  • 3584 CUDA Cores
  • 352-bit memory bus

Memory speed is 484GB/s.

Comparing the RTX 2070 to the GTX 1080 Ti

Pure power puts the GTX 1080 Ti ahead of the RTX 2070 because it offers an additional 1,280 CUDA cores, faster memory bus and more memory bandwidth. But the RTX 2070 does have the advanced, real-time ray tracing and a cheaper overall price.

One thing you’ll notice is that all manufacturers have a little different base and boost clocks.

However, VRAM, CUDA cores and other specs remain the same. If you want to compare the two, you should be choosing two specific models. For the purpose of this comparison, we’ll be choosing the following:

  1. MSI’s RTX 2070 Gaming Z
  2. NVIDIA’S GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition

Price wise, the 2070 is around 15% cheaper. Two metrics that are very important are:

  • RTX 2070: 1,410 MHz base clock; 1,830 MHz boost clock
  • GTX 1080 Ti: 1,480 MHz base block; 1,582 MHz boost clock

Boost the RTX 2070, and you’ll have an overall faster graphics card than the 1080 Ti.

Stock performance will almost always end with the 1080 Ti winning over the RTX 2070. Minimal differences exist, and even with real-time ray tracing, the 1080 Ti wins. But we’re running the MSI with Afterburner to allow us to easily boost this card’s performance.

Performance will be very game-depen

dent, and there are games that are not built around real-time ray tracing.

What performance can you expect?
  • Heaven (4K) was ran at 43 FPS on both cards, on average.
  • Assassin’s Creed: Origins (4K) ran better on stock RTX 2070 with 48 FPS average and 41 FPS at the minimum. The GTX 1080 Ti pushed 48 FPS average and 39 FPS at the minimum. Overclocked, the RTX 2070 offered 2 FPS more on average.
  • PUBG performs at a maximum average of 110 FPS on the 2070 and 104 FPS on the Ti.
  • The Witcher 3 ran at 94 FPS versus 114 FPS, with the TI winning out in this comparison. Keep in mind these are stock speeds for the RTX 2070, so we expect overclock results to match the Ti in this case.

You can save money on your graphics card with the RTX 2070 and it will offer a similar performance to the 1080 Ti. If you overclock the card, you’ll have even better performance in the majority of games.

The RTX series started out with the RTX 2080 and the RTX 2080 Ti, and the 2070 combined a lot of the great features of the 2080 and 2080 Ti at a more affordable price.

Related Posts: Check out the best 2080 cards and the top RTX 2080 Ti in our latest buyer’s guides.

An interesting note is that the 2070 has features that will allow the card to offer better performance when the game utilizes certain technologies. I will give you an example:

  • Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) has the potential to increase a game’s framerate drastically, but the game needs to support it. If the game does support it, you’re likely to see the RTX outpace the Ti at stock. Based off of this technology alone, benchmarks show that Final Fantasy 15 produced 40% better framerates with DLSS enabled. Why? DLSS requires half the energy to produce high resolution images.
  • Real-time ray tracing enhances every game and scene. Enabling real-time ray tracing is recommended because it will make your shadows, highlights and lighting immersive. The problem with his technology is that it can be very heavy on performance. Overall, it’s better to have the crisper image than it is to have a dozen more frames per second. When combined with DLSS, the performance hit will often be mitigated.

Ray Tracing

In terms of pure performance, these graphics cards come very close.

At an investment standpoint, it’s hard not to love the RTX 2070. You’ll pay less for the RTX 2070 and it comes with ray tracing, making it the overall better choice.

The games you play most often will be something to consider, too. Newer games will start to take advantage of DLSS, and if this is the case, you can expect the 2070 to often perform better than the Ti.

It’s a battle between the RTX 2070 and the GTX 1080 Ti.

The RTX 2070 is the cheapest way to enjoy real-time ray tracing, and depending on the manufacturer, it performs better than the GTX 1080 Ti.

Review and comparison of video cards based on NVIDIA RTX 2070 from ASUS, Gigabyte, Inno3D and MSI

    01/16/19

See this article Ti, RTX 2080, GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080 and GTX 1070

Summary table of characteristics of video cards based on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070

Aside from the very specific $2500 NVIDIA Titan RTX, NVIDIA Turing custom graphics cards are represented by the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 family. simpler devices like RTX 2060.

    Look at the characteristics of

GPUs for the new Turing video cards are made using a thinner 12-nanometer process technology. But, according to rumors, this process technology is not something fundamentally new, but is only a slightly modified version of the 16-nanometer process technology used in its predecessors.

For the convenience of comparing the characteristics of the new GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 and the predecessors GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080 and GTX 1070, we have summarized them in one table.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070, RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 Reference Specifications Comparison

From generation to generation of NVIDIA graphics cards, you can see the increase in the cost of video cards. But if earlier it was quite smooth, then in this case, NVIDIA Turing adapters significantly outperformed their predecessors in price.

    What do we pay for?

Part of this increase can be explained by the increased complexity of newer GPUs. Note that they have a greatly increased number of transistors and a much higher die area. Accordingly, it can be assumed that the cost of such crystals is higher.

There are some deviations in GPU frequencies. The memory is new. Instead of GDDR5X and GDDR5, RTX graphics cards received GDDR6.

But it is noteworthy that the amount of memory in the new generation of video cards remained at the same level as its predecessors.

It is very important that there are brand new RT cores and tensor cores. This is the reason for such an increase in the number of transistors and the area of the GPU chip.

    Ray tracing

The generation of Turing-based RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, RTX 2070 graphics cards NVIDIA itself calls revolutionary and associates this with hardware support for real-time ray tracing.

For this, the RT cores mentioned above are implemented. NVIDIA considers this so important that the usual GTX prefix in new video cards was even replaced with RTX, where RT is Ray Tracing (ray tracing).

Almost the main attention was paid to this technology at the presentation of new generation video cards.

To put it simply, Ray Tracing is associated with new effects of reflections on objects (including mutual ones), light reflections and rays passing through objects. In this case, the rays can have realistic refraction, overlap, etc. Ray Tracing also allows you to use more realistic softened shadows and form believable lighting.

This is indeed a very important innovation for the industry, but, paradoxically, it is Ray Tracing technology that is associated with a rather cold reception of new video cards by users.

The new RT cores have made the die bigger and more expensive, but what do users get in return?

At the time the RTX graphics cards were released, there was not a single game that had support for Ray Tracing. Now the situation is changing, but very slowly.

For example, it became possible to try Ray Tracing in any game at all quite recently with the release of Battlefield V.

As it turned out, the picture in Battlefield V with effects changes drastically and differently. There are improvements, but you can’t say at all that you get a fundamentally new level of perception.

But the computing resources of Ray Tracing «eats up» significantly. When ray tracing is enabled, performance can drop by more than half.

As a result, even with the expensive top-end NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, the FPS level at Full HD resolution, maximum quality settings using Ray Tracing will not always be able to satisfy the demanding gamer.

What about the simpler RTX 2080, RTX 2070 and higher resolutions?

It turns out that at the moment there are practically no games with Ray Tracing, visually the difference in the image with RT effects is not so dramatic, and activating tracing leads to a large drop in FPS.

For users, real-time ray tracing is just a potentially promising technology. Let’s see how the situation develops.

DLSS Anti-Aliasing, Tensor Cores, and AI

In addition to the all-new RT cores, RTX graphics cards also have tensor cores designed for AI and neural network calculations. They work in conjunction with RT cores, but tensor cores can be used for other functions as well.

Based on their work, a new anti-aliasing method is implemented — DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). A reduced rendering resolution is used, but due to AI and tensor cores, the video card converts the image to a higher quality one, “thinking out” new details.

Depending on implementation, this can increase performance, improve image quality, or both.

Again, like with Ray Tracing, DLSS needs game support to work. It is indicated that several dozen upcoming games will support DLSS anti-aliasing.

One of the few tests where you can already check DLSS is the Final Fantasy XV Benchmark. If a GeForce RTX graphics card is installed in the system, a corresponding item appears in the settings that allows you to activate DLSS.

In our testing, enabling DLSS resulted in significant performance improvements.

Image quality with DLSS and conventional TAA is comparable in this application. You can independently compare frames with DLSS and with TAA. 9

GPU automatic overclocking technology continues to improve. NVIDIA RTX graphics cards already use the fourth generation of GPU Boost.

Added the ability to manually adjust the overclocking algorithm. But much more interesting is that for the first time there was an automatic overclocking function.

If earlier, to determine the maximum frequency of the GPU, it was necessary to experiment, run various games, applications, but now the process can be greatly simplified.

A new Nvidia Scanner item is available in applications like MSI AfterBurner. By pressing just one button, after 15 minutes of automatic tests, you will receive a modified GPU frequency / voltage curve, respectively, with higher frequencies.

In our tests for all RTX 2070 graphics cards, we tested this automatic overclocking. Of course, to get even better overclocking results, you still have to carry out more complex overclocking “manually”.

Dual 8K monitors can be connected to RTX graphics cards. The maximum frame rate will be 60 Hz for both display devices.

DisplayPort is now DisplayPort 1.4a and HDMI is HDMI 2.0b. Also pay attention to the presence of a USB Type-C connector directly on the video card. It is designed for new VR helmets.

However, this port can be used for any USB Type-C enabled device.

It is quite expected that work has been done with various video codecs. For example, support for H.265 (HEVC) data compression in [email protected] resolution mode has been added, as well as improved encoding quality. Considering that today video cards are actively used in video editing, this is very important.

The ability to combine multiple graphics cards in one system is now only available on the highest-end graphics cards. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 lack this feature.

    Test participants

In one test, we managed to collect four video cards based on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 from different manufacturers at once.

These models are ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition, Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G, Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 and MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G.

Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G, ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition, MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G RTX 2070 .

It has a traditional design for ASUS ROG Strix, which has not changed much since the last generation.

The device turned out to be quite large and will take up three expansion slots in the system.

This uses a modified board with a 10 + 2 power phase configuration and a proprietary three-fan cooling system.

The fans are said to be specially designed and dust-proof inside. By the way, the direction of rotation of all fans is the same.

The massive CO radiator is pierced by six heat pipes. The sole of the heat sink has a special treatment that ASUS calls MaxContact technology.

When examining the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition (ROG-STRIX-RTX2070-O8G-GAMING), curious details are found from all sides.

The board has two BIOS chips with slightly modified board operation modes. One of them (Performance) provides increased cooling efficiency, which is achieved by higher fan speeds, and the second (Quiet) is designed for quieter operation. BIOS selection is carried out by a special switch.

By the way, the full stop of the fans at low load becomes available only when using the BIOS version with Quiet mode.

A special button is displayed on the end to quickly turn off / turn on the backlight. This is a good solution when you need to extinguish the glow without using proprietary software.

The board also provides a platform for manually measuring the voltage of RAM, GPU, PLL and a set of contacts for connecting LED strip and case fans. The rotational speed of these fans can be related to GPU temperature. This is a cool feature.

On one side of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition, you can see pins for connecting the LED strip and case fans

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC 2070 OC edition specifications (GPU-Z application data)

The memory frequency in this model corresponds to the reference one, but the GPU Boost frequency has been increased very significantly — from 1620 to 1815 MHz.

As a result, ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition is among the leaders in the performance test. Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G and MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G could not be surpassed in speed, since all three models, including ASUS, have similar operating frequencies. Very strong video cards participate in the test.

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition monitoring in MSI Afterburner

When under load in our conditions, the temperature of GPU was only 57 ° C . For all performance tests and temperature measurements, the BIOS was used with Performance mode.

Considering the rather high power consumption of the video card, this is simply an excellent result. By the way, this is the lowest temperature among all the tested RTX 2070-based video cards in this test.

The fan speed was about 1600 rpm. During operation, the video card will not create noise discomfort.

When using automatic overclocking with the initial settings, the maximum GPU frequency almost reached 2100 MHz.

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC frequency and voltage curves with standard settings (top) and after automatic overclocking

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition allows you to increase the power consumption limit up to 125%. This is the highest value in the test.

The lighting system consists of several elements with RGB lighting on the front panel, an illuminated ASUS ROG logo on the side and another large logo displayed on the back plate.

The backlight can of course be controlled. A number of effects are available, as well as the ability to change colors depending on the temperature of the GPU.

Feature: the glow color can change, but at the same time all the backlight elements have the same color.

Very good, but today there are already more advanced solutions, including among the test participants. The backlighting of Gigabyte AORUS and MSI video cards turned out to be even cooler.

ASUS proprietary software is approximately the combination of MSI Afterburner and GPU-Z in terms of capabilities

The ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition is a very powerful RTX 2070-based graphics card with a very efficient cooling system.

It is among the leaders in performance, has a number of interesting additional features in the form of two BIOS chips, contacts for case fans and LED strip.

But for all its merits, ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition has the highest cost among other test participants based on RTX 2070.

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition (ROG-STRIX-RTX2070-O8G-GAMING) rating:

    + great cooling system

+ fan shutdown at low load

9003 9004 + significantly increased frequencies + higher power consumption limit than other participants

    + dual BIOS

+ pins for connecting RGB LED strips and case fans

    — the highest cost

    — large dimensions

    — relatively modest equipment

    MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming Z 8G

    MSI GeForce RTX 8G

as in the previous one, MSI has significantly modified its GAMING series .

The recognizable design with a predominance of red color and inserts reminiscent of dragon claws was decided not to be used anymore. G and is MSI’s fastest RTX 2070 to date.

The board is typically redesigned for the GAMING series. Soldered power phase configuration 8+2. CO consists of two fans and a powerful heatsink with six heat pipes.

If you look closely, each fan alternates two types of blades. The technology is called TORX FAN 3.0. Combined with the new design of the heatsink’s diffuser plates, this, according to the manufacturer, will contribute to better efficiency.

The cooling system was indeed very efficient.

Monitoring MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G with MSI Afterburner

Recorded temperature under load — 66°C. But something else surprised me. This temperature is maintained at a fan speed of only 1100 rpm.

As a result, the graphics card is very quiet . In terms of cooling efficiency, MSI surpassed other participants, except, perhaps, the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition. But it’s hard to compare with ASUS CO. On the one hand, the competitor has a lower temperature, and on the other hand, this is achieved at significantly higher fan speeds.

Specifications of MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G (GPU-Z application data)

This is the highest value among all test participants. But the superiority over the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition and Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G is very meager. For these video cards, this value is 1815 MHz.

The memory frequency is standard. It is logical that the RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G was among the performance leaders. With automatic overclocking, the maximum frequency reaches 2100 MHz.

GPU frequency and voltage curves MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G specifications (GPU-Z application data) with default settings (top) and after automatic overclocking

Available power consumption limit is 111%.

I was very pleased with the new lighting system of this video card . Luminous areas around the perimeter surrounded the fans. The logo on the side is also illuminated.

Backlight MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G

It’s all about how dynamic effects are implemented here. In some modes, this is a kind of color show. Although there is no luminous element on the back plate, MSI liked this backlight more than ASUS’ solution.

    Backlight control

An additional bracket is supplied with the video card for more secure mounting of the video card in the case. The video card is really weighty, but, in our opinion, there is no great need for such a bar. Probably, it will not interfere when transporting the case.

The bar is screwed into the computer case below the video card, after which the device rests on this bar through soft gaps. It’s a good model.

MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G score:

    + excellent cooling system

Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G

Even compared to other large graphics cards, the Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G is even more massive in the test.

Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G on the left

But the main contribution to the thickness of the device is not made by the CO heatsink, but by a rather curious placement of fans. They are slightly overlapped. Due to this, , with a moderate length, managed to place three 100 mm fans at once.

Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8 G is the fastest RTX 2070 from Gigabyte .

Specifications Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G (GPU-Z application data) Z8G.

It is curious that the memory also received factory overclocking. In all other RTX 2070 video cards of this test, the memory frequencies correspond to the reference ones.

But the increase in memory in the case of the AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G is purely nominal and has little effect on the final performance. The frequency was raised from the standard 14,000 to 14,140.

The performance of the Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G turned out to be at the level of MSI and ASUS video cards.

Using automatic overclocking, the maximum value of the GPU frequency was about 2100. This roughly repeats the results of MSI and ASUS.

Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G GPU frequency and voltage curves with default settings (top) and after automatic overclocking

The maximum power consumption limit that can be changed is 109%.

Power system phase configuration — 10+2.

Unlike other participants, in the design of the cooling system, instead of a polished plate or evaporation chamber, the option is used when the heat pipes themselves touch the GPU.

There are five heat pipes in total.

The manufacturer pays special attention to the fact that the central fan has a different direction of rotation compared to the outer ones. It is indicated that this avoids turbulence and increases the efficiency of CO.

Can model and stop fans at low load. The side panel, traditionally for Gigabyte, even has an illuminated inscription “Fan Stop”, which lights up when the fans are idle.

Recorded temperatures and fan speeds under load were 67°C at 1700 rpm. Very good, but it turns out that the efficiency of the COs participating in the test ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition and MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G is slightly higher.

Monitor Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G with MSI Afterburner

The lighting system in Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G is very unusual.

A RGB LED is located on the edge of one of the blades of each fan. This diode can change color depending on which sector of the circle it is in when the fan rotates. The resulting effects are impressive.

Backlight Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G

The video card is really capable of attracting a lot of attention.

Additionally illuminated logos placed on the front, back and side of the video card.

Due to the fact that the backlight of the AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G is associated with the rotation of the fans, some not very pleasant features were revealed. First, ring effects only work when the fans are running. Secondly, a slight flicker is noticeable. The second drawback, however, is not so pronounced. If the video card is not constantly in your field of vision, there will be no inconvenience.

The Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G video card had the largest number of video outputs among other RTX 2070-based video cards in this review. Yes, the video card is weighty, but, in our opinion, there is no urgent need for such additional support.

By the way, the level of materials and processing of this leg is simply amazing.

Is this kind of accessory becoming a trend for high-end graphics cards?

In summary, we can say that the Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G stands out not only for its significant factory overclocking, but also for its rather bold design, combined with an interesting lighting system.

This is a very worthy opponent for other powerful participants in this test.

    Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 (N20702-08D6X-2511683)

    Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2

Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 is far from an ordinary model. Here and factory overclocking of the GPU, and a proprietary cooling system, and lighting with RGB elements.

But against the background of other GeForce RTX 2070 video cards from this test, and these turned out to be very advanced models, it looks more modest.

Video card from Inno3 D is the only one in the test that occupies not three, but two expansion slots.

The heat sink contains four heat pipes and is blown by a pair of fans.

Given the more modest class of the device, Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 was expectedly inferior to other test participants in terms of cooling efficiency.

Monitor Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 in MSI Afterburner

Under load, the temperature was 66 °C. This is more than a comfortable level, but the fan speed was at the level of 2050 rpm, which is noticeably higher than that of the presented ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI video cards.

Accordingly, the Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 is not so quiet, but its noise level should not create much discomfort.

The video card can stop the fans at low load, but it does it in a somewhat peculiar way. Before the final stop, the fans spin up a couple of dozen times more from 0 to about 600 rpm. It is quite possible that this «bug» can be solved in the new firmware version, although even now this is not a significant problem.

The bar graph shows how the fans “pulsate” for a while at a speed from 0 to 600 rpm before stopping completely.

Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 specifications (GPU-Z application data) This is a good factory overclock, but, again, the competitors turned out to be too powerful and they have this parameter even higher.

As a result, the Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 is slightly behind the competition in terms of performance.

If we analyze the obtained GPU frequency / voltage curve during automatic overclocking, we can see that the maximum GPU frequency is about 50 MHz lower than other RTX 2070 video cards in the test at the given voltage values.

    Inno3D proprietary software

Yes, the Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 is somewhat inferior to rivals in terms of speed and efficiency of the cooling system. But for many, all this can be easily leveled by the fact that that Inno3 D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 has a much more affordable cost and outperforms all other participants in this test in terms of performance and price.

And the Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 has a very advanced bundle. The model comes with a gaming mat and keys for VRMark, 3DMark tests.

    Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 (N20702-08D6X-2511683) score:

    How we tested video cards

Video cards worked using the original driver settings, optimized gaming profiles were not applied.

Video cards were tested without overclocking and without using proprietary profiles (OC, Gaming, Silence, etc.), which are sometimes available when installing proprietary software.

We compared the RTX 20170-based graphics cards we tested with the previous generation GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti-based video adapters, which were the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G and Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming OC 11G.

We used modern games with support for DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, which have built-in benchmarks, as test applications to determine the performance of video cards. The program also includes popular synthetic tests 3DMark.

Each game was set to maximum or close to maximum graphics settings. In games, we used 2560×1440 and 3840×2160 pixels. (4K resolution). 3DMark 11 tested the cards with the Extreme preset, while 3DMark (2013) used the Fire Strike Extreme, Fire Strike Ultra, and DirectX 12 Time Spy benchmarks.

Maximum GPU temperature and system power consumption (without monitor) was monitored in Metro: Last Light. It was in this game that video cards, according to observations, heated up most intensively and the maximum power consumption occurred.

The system itself was operated outside the PC case (open bench) at a room temperature of about 21 °C. The noise level created by the operation of video card cooling systems was evaluated subjectively.

The final score in the Performance category was determined on the basis of all tests with an equal contribution from each test. At the same time, if we talk about games, to reduce the influence of dependence on the processor, when calculating the overall performance (category «Performance»), only results with a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels were taken into account. (4 K ) .

Results at 2560×1440 pixels. provided for information.

Histograms are normalized as a percentage with models sorted by test results. Specific results in terms of scores and FPS are also listed.

The cost of video cards is indicated on the database of large online stores (at the time of publication) from the Hotline website.

A separate Final Fantasy XV benchmark experimented with DLSS technology (see histogram above).

    Conclusions

As can be seen from the test results, when compared with solutions of the previous generation, the performance of the new RTX 2070-based video cards is closer to NVIDIA0 GTX 108.

The ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2070 OC edition, Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2070 XTREME 8G, and MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z 8G trio are very fancy graphics cards. They have advanced lighting systems, significantly increased GPU frequencies.

You will definitely not notice the difference in speed between them without special tests. In terms of the efficiency of cooling systems, models from ASUS and MSI are leading in this trio.

ASUS allows you to increase the power limit more than others. The same model, by the way, is distinguished by the highest cost among all test participants.

Gigabyte AORUS and MSI can be put a little higher than ASUS in terms of the impressions of the backlight. Inno3D is an outsider here.

The Inno3D GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming OC X2 presented in the test is more modest compared to the trio of ASUS, Gigabyte AORUS and MSI, although it is also far from an ordinary model. It has lower GPU frequencies, a less advanced cooling system, and is inferior in backlighting and overclocking capabilities.

But, on the other hand, this model is from Inno3D and is the most affordable. In terms of performance and cost, it outperforms other test participants.

There is a difference in speed between Inno3D and the trio of ASUS, Gigabyte AORUS, MSI, but it is not so significant. If you want to save money, this is a very worthy option.

The test participants themselves are in order. Any video card from the test is a high-quality device with high performance, efficient cooling without any significant drawbacks.

But the new generation of video cards RTX generally leaves a number of reasons for reflection, although the manufacturer calls the transition to RTX revolutionary.

If you do not «dig» very far into the past and take into account the transitions from the GTX 700 generation to the GTX 900 (the 800 series was skipped in desktop graphics cards) and from the GTX 900 to the GTX 1000, the new generation of graphics cards has always been characterized by greatly increased performance with a simultaneous significant improvement in power consumption. At the same time, there was no big jump in the cost of equivalent models.

And what do we see now with the release of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX generation?

Yes, there is a performance increase, but it is not as noticeable as it was before with the new generation of video cards.

In terms of energy efficiency, the new items are better than the GTX 1000 models, but only slightly.

Did you also notice that there was no increase in video memory in the RTX generation?

Moreover, it is rather difficult to expect a significant reduction in the cost of NVIDIA RTX video cards. They got much more complex and expensive GPUs to manufacture.

The problem is that a significant part of the complications in the new GPUs went to the RT cores used for the first time ( hardware support for ray tracing), which so far can be used in few places . By the way, at the time of the release of RTX video cards, there were no games with hardware support for tracing at all!

And then the big question is whether the changes in the image that ray tracing introduces are worth the very serious performance hit that occurs when this feature is activated.

It turns out that at the moment, in terms of performance and cost, the new RTX 2000 is inferior to the predecessor video cards of the GTX 1000 series (the previous generation based on the Pascal architecture).

Yes, RTX 2000s could potentially grow in popularity over time with more games supporting ray tracing and DLSS anti-aliasing, but it’s too early to tell.

When you start mining without additional graphics card settings, you most likely will not get the maximum hashrate. You must choose the optimal overclocking of the video card in order to get the maximum hashrate and at the same time keep the power consumption at the level you need. For some algorithms, it is necessary to overclock the core, for others, memory, for others, both. The main principle of overclocking video cards is stable operation and the maximum ratio of hashrate to consumed electricity. Important, each card is unique! For example, if one video card keeps a frequency of 2000 MHz in the core, then another, exactly the same card in appearance, can only keep 1900 MHz. Choose overclocking personally for each video card. Read more in our material Fundamentals of overclocking video cards on different algorithms.
