Previously, the flagship video cards of the new generation, the GeForce RTX 2080/2080 Ti, have already gone on sale. They made a small revolution in the field of computer graphics, as they were the first in the world to offer real-time ray tracing technology. A similar feature is included in the more affordable NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 graphics accelerator.

Real-time ray tracing in games

As in the case of the GeForce RTX 2080/2080 Ti, the key difference between the GeForce RTX 2070 and the previous generation of video cards was the support for ray tracing calculation. In the Ray Tracing model, the video chip calculates the ray trajectory to create photorealistic lighting and reflections.

In general, ray tracing is possible on older video cards, but it’s all about performance. NVIDIA itself provides such calculations. The previous flagship, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, could render 1.1 billion rays per second. At the same time, the GeForce RTX 2070, which belongs to a lower class, can process up to 6 billion rays per second. And this is without loading shader modules: only a dedicated RT block provides such performance.

Advanced AI graphics

Turing GPUs are equipped with Tensor Cores to deliver AI performance. Graphics cards support real-time AI algorithms to create bright, crisp, and photo-realistic images and effects never before possible.

NVIDIA calls artificial intelligence the biggest technological advance in history. The Turing architecture brings its capabilities to computer graphics. It is equipped with tensor cores that provide over 100 teraflops of artificial intelligence computing performance. Turing GPUs can run AI algorithms in real time to create bright, crisp and photo-realistic images and effects that gamers could only dream of before.

Modern shading technologies

Programmable shaders define modern graphics. Graphics cards based on the Turing architecture are equipped with faster, more flexible and more efficient shading technologies than ever before. Thanks to the combination with GDDR6, the world’s fastest memory, the performance achieved allows you to play at maximum settings and high frames per second.

If we are not talking about the entire new GeForce RTX family in general, but specifically about the GeForce RTX 2070, we can highlight the Turing TU106 graphics chip. It received 2304 CUDA cores, 144 texture units and 64 raster units. It also has 288 tensor cores and 36 RT modules for ray tracing processing. The GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition reference card runs at 1410/1710 MHz.

The video card received 8 GB of advanced GDDR6 video memory with a frequency of 1,750 MHz and a throughput per pin of 14,000 Mbps (memory bus width — 256 bits). The novelty received an additional eight-pin power connector. The graphics chip is powered by six phases, the memory by two.

Real gaming performance

Impressive hardware is a good thing. But what is a video card capable of in a real «battle»? Some independent Western publications have already tested the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 in games. In general, the new product is slightly ahead of the GeForce GTX 1080. The exact result varies depending on the specific game. In some of them, the GeForce RTX 2070 outperforms even the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, the flagship model of the previous generation.

If we talk about absolute results, and not relative ones, then the performance of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 will be enough for any games at 19 resolutions20 x 1080, 2560 x 1440 and 4K at 60 fps for smooth gameplay and comfortable frame rates. If we talk about comparison with the GeForce GTX 1080, then in addition to a slightly higher speed, support for advanced technologies, primarily RTX, will be an advantage.

What models are on sale

In the XCOM-SHOP, where everything comes from, several versions of new video cards from different manufacturers are already available. Here is a list of available models:

The Palit GeForce RTX 2070 DUAL version has a modified cooler, although it is generally similar to the reference one. Core frequencies — 1410 MHz in normal mode and 1620 MHz in accelerated mode. In Palit GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING PRO OC, the graphics chip is initially overclocked to 1515/1815 MHz.

But the real monster is the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 AORUS XTREME. This version received an improved WindForce Stack 3X cooler, consisting of three 100mm double-ball bearing fans, a three-section aluminum heatsink, and five copper heat pipes with direct contact technology. Plus, the power supply system for the GDDR6 core and memory is made according to the “10 + 2” phase scheme. All this made it possible to increase the GPU frequency in dynamic overclocking mode to 1,815 MHz. This is 12% higher than the factory version.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 is created in the image and likeness of its older sisters — GeForce RTX 2080 and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. This video card also uses revolutionary ray tracing technology, which will transform computer games. The novelty slightly outperforms the GeForce GTX 1080 and provides a comfortable gaming experience in 4K resolution.
