GPU can be overclocked up to 1500 MHz

Early last month, AMD introduced the AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card. This is the company’s first graphics card to feature a Polaris-based GPU. The performance of the device is 5.5 TFLOPS, which is not bad for a card with a price of $199 (for the minimum configuration). In addition, support for virtual reality technologies has been added here — now this is an important area that many manufacturers are guided by. The Polaris 10 GPU is made using 14nm FinFET technology. It contains 2034 stream processors, and a 256-bit bus is used to communicate with memory. The adapter is equipped with a six-pin power connector and four video outputs.

The characteristics of the card, as we can see, are not bad, but, as it turned out, they can be improved. Overclockers were able to increase the frequency of the GPU, and thanks to a clever trick, the amount of video memory can be increased from 4 GB to 8 GB.

GPU Overclocking

Immediately after the release of the card on the market, enthusiasts became interested in its overclocking potential. Overclockers were able to increase the operating frequency of the graphics processor of the AMD Radeon RX 480 video card to 1425 MHz. The nominal frequency of the GPU card is 1120/1266 MHz in standard/boost modes. When checking the overclocked card in 3DMark Firestrike, the result was 14646 points. That’s higher than cards like the Radeon R9390X and Radeon R9 Nano that have been factory overclocked.

After completing these experiments, enthusiasts decided to test the operation of the card with a liquid cooling system. In this case, an additional fan was used to cool the memory chips and the power system. In addition, I had to install an additional external power controller. Using the controller, the voltage on the GPU was increased to 1.35 V. The overclocking result is impressive: the frequency of the video chip was increased to 1500 MHz, and the memory chips to 9000 MHz. The result in 3DMark Firestrike increased to 15363 points. True, the batteries heated up to 105 degrees Celsius, and the card began to consume 260 watts.

Due to the fact that the card uses a 6 + 1 phase power system, it is able to provide 58% more current when compared to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Founder’s Edition (it uses a 5 + 1 phase power system). If the manufacturer equipped it with 8-pin power connectors, we could talk about even more overclocking potential of the device. AMD announced that improved card models — Sapphire RX 480 Nitro, Sapphire RX 480 Gaming, Powercolor RX 480 Devil and ASUS RX 480 Strix Gaming will receive an 8-pin auxiliary power connector. And ASUS RX 480 Strix Gaming will receive a second connector — either 8- or 6-pin. Such cards should go on sale this month.

Issues were reported in June with the Radeon RX 480 exceeding the power specifications specified in the specifications. The 150-watt adapter consumed 168 watts at full load. Installed in a PCI-E slot, this adapter consumed 90 watts. This is more than the standard 75W slot. After the problem became known, the company fixed it by releasing a software update — Radeon Software 16. 7.1.

Increasing the memory capacity

The manufacturer releases two versions of the AMD Radeon RX 480 card: with 4 and 8 GB of video memory. As it turned out, the younger AMD Radeon RX 480 4G model actually has 8 GB of video memory. Upon direct inspection of the 4 GB version, it turned out that the board contains 8 memory chips from Samsung with a total capacity of 8 GB.

But half of the memory is disabled by the manufacturer, the «extra» memory is locked at the BIOS level. Reducing the amount of memory in a device this way is not the most rational solution, but in the first AMD Radeon RX 480 cards that hit the market, the shutdown was done that way.

As it turned out, the block can be removed. To do this, you need the ATIFlash 2.74 program. With its help, representatives of the TechPowerUp website took a BIOS image of a card with 8 GB of memory. The image is available at this link. After that, the resulting image was transferred to the younger model. Immediately after that, the younger model showed an increase in video memory up to 8 GB. The operation of the modified map was tested while playing Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The toy consumes more than 4 GB of VRAM in 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) mode. A test run of the game was also made on the 8 GB version of the card. Both cards showed almost the same result. The original 8 GB card achieved 24.6 fps, the modified 4 GB card achieved 24.7 fps, and the original 4 GB card achieved 23.3 fps.

The price difference between the 4 GB and 8 GB versions of the AMD Radeon RX 480 is $30.

Before flashing a junior card, make sure that there are 8 Samsung memory chips on the board. It may well happen that the manufacturer will physically reduce the amount of video memory, and then when you try to reflash the lower version of the card with the image of the BIOS of the older model, you will get a “brick”.

In a similar way in 2011, they learned how to convert ATI Radeon HD 6950 in the HD 6970. The BIOS of the younger model was flashed by the craftsmen to the BIOS of the older model, getting the full functionality of the HD 6970 and saving about $100 (at that time). The journalists of the already mentioned site TechPowerUp were the first to report the possibility of such firmware.

Speaking about the video memory of graphic adapters, it is worth remembering the problem with NVIDIA cards. Namely, with the GTX 970 model. The manufacturer in the specifications for the card indicated the amount of video memory of 4 GB. This is true, but an eighth of this volume did not work normally. When accessing the last 500-700MB of GTX 9 memory70 performance drops significantly. The drop is very noticeable — from 150 GB / s to 19.88 GB / s.

The card memory has been divided into two segments. This is the main fast memory segment of 3.5 GB and the remainder of 0.5 GB. The issue with the last 500 MB has mostly been experienced by owners of 4K monitors or multi-display systems.

Virtual Reality

The system requirements for VR headsets such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift list a powerful graphics card in the $300 price range. AMD is offering its card for $199. Thus, the floor of the cost of VR systems is gradually decreasing.

A set of libraries and SDK called LiquidVR has been released specifically for VR mode (DirectX 12 and Vulkan API supported).

In addition, Variable Rate Shading (VRS) has been added to save pixel fillrate resources in a VR environment. This feature allows the driver to reduce the load on the GPU by filling in the pixels of excess areas that compensate for the distortion of proportions by the helmet lenses.

The NVIDIA GTX 1080 and 1070 cards also support VR, but they are in the upper and mid-range segments. For example, the cost of NVIDIA GTX 1070 is $380. And the price of the flagship model NVIDIA GTX 1080 is $600.

Software

Now the company promises to release new versions of drivers for its products more often than in previous years. In 2015, for example, there were only three WHQL-certified versions of Radeon Software, plus nine spin-off versions that optimized specific games.

AMD plans to roll out six major WHQL-certified driver updates and gamer-required intermediate versions that will be optimized for specific games.

Competitors

NVIDIA has released a competitor to the AMD Radeon RX 480, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card, priced at $249. The GP106 GPU contains 1280 CUDA cores. The number of texture units here is 80. The bus is 192-bit, GDDR5 memory is 6 GB. The GPU operates at a base frequency of 1056 MHz, the maximum frequency is 1708 MHz. The effective memory frequency is 8000 MHz. GPU performance — 4.4 TFLOPS.

The card consumes about 120 W, the developer provided one six-pin auxiliary power connector. There are five video outputs on the mounting plate of the card. DVI, HDMI, plus three DisplayPorts.

Manufacturers

Many companies have started serial production of this video card, the most famous of them are: Gigabyte, MSI, XFX, Asus, PowerColor. All of them are somewhat different and have their own distinctive features.

ASUS

Asus version will please the user with factory overclocking of the processor, it can work in two modes «OS» and «Gaming». The first with a frequency of up to 1270 MHz, the second up to 1250 MHz. The memory frequency is 1650 MHz, while the effective frequency is 6600 MHz. The manufacturer claims that this model is 25% faster than its predecessor — Radeon R9380. The video card is assembled on an Asus corporate design printed circuit board. There is a power subsystem consisting of six phases. Five for graphics GPU, one for memory needs. There is also a six-pin connector so that additional power can be supplied to the device. The card is cooled using the DirectCU II system, which consists of an aluminum heatsink and a pair of fans that turn off when the device temperature is low, as well as several heat pipes.

PowerColor

PowerColor has similar graphics card specifications, but GDDR5 video memory in combination with a seven-phase power system and an eight-pin connector should in theory have a slightly better overclocking potential. The card’s memory has a frequency response of 1750 MHz, while the effective one is 7000 MHz. The cooling system is also quite good, especially if you take into account the massive radiator, as well as the special shape of the blades used in the fan.

MSI

MSI presents 4 types of card. They are divided into two lines: Gaming and Gaming X. Both lines have cards with 4 and 8 GB, respectively. The GPU of the Gaming line operates at frequencies not exceeding 1230 MHz, and the memory is about 6600 MHz. Gaming X is represented by overclocking the GPU within 1254 MHz, as well as memory at 6700 MHz. All cards have a 6-phase power subsystem, as well as an eight-pin connector for it. The card is cooled using Twin Frozr VI technology.

Gigabyte

Gigabyte has only shown the 4 GB model so far. The GPU is brought up to 1230 MHz, the memory is at 6600 MHz. The structure of the power subsystem: 6 + 1 — phases, eight-pin connector. The card is cooled using «WindForce 2X». In addition, there is an intensifying plate and backlight.

XFX

«XFX» demonstrates 4 variations of «RX 470» at once. And all have only 4 GB of memory. 4+1 phase and six-pin connector are the distinguishing features of the power system. Models differ only in quantity often, however, one model has a special cooling system built in.

The most powerful model «Radeon RX 470 RS Black Limited Edition» has a 1280 MHz processor and 7000 MHz memory.

Performance and benchmarks RX 470

To begin with, let’s compare the 4 and 8 GB versions of the video card with each other, and then consider their performance compared to other analogues.

With such a comparison, it is important to take into account that regardless of the amount of memory, its frequency in both variations will be identical, namely 6600 MHz. The same data bus is 256 bits.

And so, let’s go through the games on which the testing took place. All games were set to maximum graphics with all additional textures in both 1080p and 4K resolutions.

Total War: Warhammer

At 1080p, the 8 GB model delivers 69 frames, while its smaller 4 GB brethren gets 65 frames.

Things are much worse at 4K. 8 GB has 24 frames, while 4 GB has 22 frames. However, it is understandable. If you want to play in such high resolution — take two RX 470.

DOOM (2016)

At 1080p, the 8 GB model produces 87 frames, while the 4 GB model produces 84.

At 4K, the result is 29 and 27 frames, respectively.

GTA V

At 1080p, the 8 GB model produces 81 fps, while the 4 GB model achieves 76 fps.

At 4K, the result is 29 and 25 frames, respectively.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

At 1080p, the 8 GB variation has 52 frames, while the 4 GB variation has 49.

At 4K, 8 GB has 24 frames, while 4 GB has only 22.

Total

As we can see, the difference between the 4 and 8 GB versions is not so significant and averages 3-5 fps.
