i5-8400
- The i5-8400 is more power efficient and generates less heat.
Ryzen 7 1800X
- The Ryzen 7 1800X has higher Level 2 Cache. Data/instructions which have to be processed can be loaded from the fast L2 and the CPU does not have to wait for the very slow DDR RAM
- The Ryzen 7 1800X has higher Level 3 Cache. This is useful when you have substantial multiprocessing workloads, many computationally intense simultaneous processes. More likely on a server, less on a personally used computer for interactive desktop workloads.
- The Ryzen 7 1800X has more cores. The benefit of having more cores is that the system can handle more threads. Each core can handle a separate stream of data. This architecture greatly increases the performance of a system that is running concurrent applications.
- The Ryzen 7 1800X has more threads. Larger programs are divided into threads (small sections) so that the processor can execute them simultaneously to get faster execution.
- For some games, a cpu with a higher clock speed, or in a technical name IPC (Instructions per clock), has better results than other CPU’s with higher core count and lower core speed.

Intel Core i7-8700K, i5-8600K, 8400 versus AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, R5 1600X, 1500X > Price vs.
Performance & Conclusion
Price vs. Performance & Conclusion
Here is a look at the average performance across the nine games tested, starting with the 720p results. These results look a lot like what we saw across most of the games tested, particularly in the DX11 titles, of which there were six.
The Ryzen 5 1500X looks slow but it still delivered perfectly smooth performance in every title tested with over 60fps at all times. How does it stack up in terms of value, you ask?
Before accounting for total platform expenses, the 1500X only delivers about the same bang for your buck as the Core i5-8600K, though the R5 1600 does beat out all the Core i7 CPUs.
What happens when you add the cost of a motherboard? Well let’s take a look…
If we factor in the motherboard prices ($70 for a B350, $100 for a Z270 and $120 for a Z370), the 1500X not only edges out the Core i5-8600K, it also beats the R5 1600 by a bit. Intel’s Core i5-8400, however, is the thorn in AMD’s side, costing just $2. 56 per frame based on our data.
Does that change at 1080p?
Compared to what we saw at 720p, the average frame rate margins have now closed up a little and Ryzen looks more competitive. Since most gamers play at 1080p, many of you are surely wondering what kind of bang for your buck you can expect here.
This time, accounting for just the CPU prices, we see that the R5 1500X is quite a bit more cost effective compared to the Core i5-8600K. While the 8600K whipped the 1600X at 720p, they deliver a similar level of value at 1080p.
As we include basic motherboard pricing, the 1500X closes in on the Core i5-8400 but once again Intel’s new sub-$200 hexa-core processor is still the best thing out there right now in terms of value, coming in at 5% cheaper than the 1500X and 10% cheaper than the 1600X when calculating the cost per frame including motherboard prices.
What about those who game at 1440p? Well here we can see that the playing field is pretty well leveled at this resolution. The slowest CPU tested, the R5 1500X, is only 10% slower than the fastest CPU tested, the 8700K.
Even so, when we add pricing to the mix, the Core i5-8400 is still the value champ. At just $2.20 per frame, it’s 9% more cost effective than the 1500X and 24% more cost effective than the 1600X.
Once we factor in motherboard pricing we see that for the first time a Ryzen CPU is able to beat the Core i5-8400 while the R5 1600X closes in. The R7 1800X is a bit of a lost cause for gaming but I’ll discuss that a bit more in a moment.
Conclusion
Wrapping up with the 720p data first, these low-res results are important for a few reasons, though for some they can be a bit misleading. They’re important because they show us the true difference between CPUs in these games. With any speed limits removed, this shows how fast they can go. In my opinion, this gives us a good indication of how future performance should look when using yet to be released high-end GPUs, such as the Titan XpX pX ;).
The fact that the Core i5-8600K was 24% faster than the Ryzen 5 1600 on average means that in the future when GPUs become faster and games become more demanding, the Intel CPU should stand up better and potentially last longer. We see a similar pattern when comparing the Core i7-2600K and FX-8350 in modern games, just to a much lesser degree as Ryzen is actually good and the FX-8350 is powered by eight hamsters in four wheels.
However, Ryzen works better in well-crafted DirectX 12 titles such as Civilization VI and Ashes of the Singularity, to cite an example. The issue though is that those kind of DX12 titles are still few and far between in late 2017. Should we see an influx of quality DX12 titles over the next few years, then this could change the future prediction of the 720p results shown here.
If you had to make a bet based currently available data, investing in the Z370 platform and getting the Core i5-8400 would probably be the safest route as it will look after you well right now. It also comes at a relatively low cost per frame and with six physical cores it’s not going to become extinct any time soon. Even in the 1440p cost-per-frame data that includes motherboard pricing, we see that the 8400 costs 8% more than the four-core 1500X, but we’d rather have the six-core Core i5 for that small price premium.
Further up the food chain, the Core i5-8600K and 8700K are impressive but you’re going to need an insane GPU configuration to see any real benefit over the 8400. The 1800X isn’t the best value representation from the Ryzen 7 series either, but it does offer the best out of the box performance which is why I included it.
Our follow-up coverage to this article will include overclocking numbers and for that we’ll use the much cheaper Ryzen 7 1700 overclocked to 4GHz. The R5 1600 will also step in for the 1600X and the 1500X will be replaced by the R5 1400. This is the real challenge facing Intel’s Core i5-8400: for those willing to overclock, can Ryzen deliver more bang for your buck?
Well, we plan to find out soon.

For now, if you’re just looking for solid performance out of the box at a great price, the Core i5-8400 looks like the best bet. Ryzen is of course still a worthy alternative and for those gaming at 1440p with a GTX 1070 or Vega 56 graphics card, the difference between a Ryzen 5 CPU and the Core i5-8400 will be negligible. Which platform will prove to be the best investment over the next five years is anyone’s guess.

Intel Core i5-8600K review: $250 6-core processor
The results of the first tests of Intel Coffee Lake processors pleased us. Increasing the number of cores significantly increases the performance of the chips even without deep improvements at the level of the internal microarchitecture. Core i7-8700K is expected to be the fastest, but also the most expensive chip for the updated LGA1151 platform. It’s time to look at the capabilities of the Core i5-8600K, which also received 6 cores, has an unlocked multiplier, and is priced at $250 by the manufacturer.
Help
The new Core i5 processors use the same silicon die as the older Core i7 Coffee Lake processors. Surprisingly, the chips also received six processing cores. Traditionally for desktop models, Core i5 do not have support for Hyper-Threading logical multithreading technology. Compared to the Core i7, the cache size has been reduced from 12 MB to 9 MB, and less aggressive frequency formulas are also used. But all these are simplifications in the context of Coffee Lake, but if we talk about comparison with its predecessors, then the progress is obvious.
The six-core Core i5 is perhaps the biggest surprise in history with the release of 8th generation Core chips. If an increase in the number of computing units for the Core i7 was brewing and was predictable after the launch of AMD Ryzen, then in the case of the Core i5, the manufacturer could, for example, limit itself to unlocking Hyper-Threading. However, Intel has not taken the easy route here. In general, the decision is correct. Additional physical cores should provide a guaranteed performance boost in multi-threaded tasks.

Coffee Lake Core i5 lineup
At launch, the new family includes two models, the Core i5-8600K and Core i5-8400. The older one works with a frequency formula of 4.3 / 3.6 GHz and, as you might guess from the “K” index in the name, it has an unlocked multiplier that allows you to experiment with overclocking. The Core i5-8400 received a 4.0 / 2.8 GHz formula. Both processors are six-core and equipped with 9 MB of L3 cache. Thermal package Core i5-8600K declared at level 95 W, and the youngest should fit within the TDP 65 W.
Surely you have already been alerted by the rather low base values of the operating frequencies. However, there is no cause for concern here. 6-core Coffee Lake received very aggressive algorithms for the Turbo Boost 2.0 mechanism, which seriously speed up the CPU even when all computing units are loaded. So in multi-threaded tasks, when all 6 cores are loaded, the Core i5-8600K frequency does not drop below 4100 MHz, while the Core i5-8400 blocks are accelerated to at least 3800 MHz.

There are no changes in terms of equipment. The retail version of the Core i5-8600K is still offered without a stock cooling system. The manufacturer believes that if you already choose the enthusiast version with an unlocked multiplier, then you are probably ready to spend money on the corresponding CO. The Core i5-8400 will ship with a cooler that is sure to be enough to keep the CPU cool in normal mode.
Both Core i5 models are interesting in their own way. The Core i5-8600K opens up the possibilities for overclocking. The unlocked multiplier makes it very easy to increase the frequency of the processor with an Intel Z370 motherboard and a cooler with good heat dissipation efficiency. The recommended price for the Core i5-8600K is $257, while the Core i5-7600K is priced at $242. The extra $15 seems more than justified given the increased core count and cache.
In turn, the Core i5-8400 is the most affordable 6-core Intel processor. The declared price of $182 is completely identical to that of the previous model — Core i5-7400. This chip does look like an offer you can’t refuse. The Core i5-8400 also has 6 cores and 9MB of L3 cache. If we talk about the working formula, then the frequency of the cores of this processor in all modes is only 300 MHz lower than that of the Core i5-8600K.
Despite the seemingly modest initial assortment of the Core i5 of the Coffee Lake family, the proposed models cover the basic needs. There is a chip for experiments and there is the most affordable 6-core processor.
Intel Core i5-8600K
We got an engineering sample of the Core i5-8600K for testing. As we noted, this is a 6-core processor using the same silicon die as the new Core i7.
Despite the standard formula of 3.6/4.3 GHz, the actual operating frequency, thanks to the active work of Turbo Boost 2.0, does not fall below 4100 MHz. At the same time, the chip operates at 4200 MHz with a load of 2-3-4 cores and accelerates to 4300 MHz with a single-threaded task. That is, with the frequencies here initially everything is very good.
Left — Core i5-7600K (Kaby Lake), right — Core i5-8600K (Coffee Lake)
Given the use of the same LGA1151 processor socket, there are at least visual differences from its predecessor. It is possible to single out perhaps a slightly larger accumulation of surface-mounted elements next to the contact pads.
Recall that for the operation of any Coffee Lake processor, you will need a motherboard based on Intel 300 series chipsets. Due to the strengthening of the power subsystem, compatibility with motherboards of the previous generation has not been preserved, alas. For the updated platform, only models based on the Intel Z370 are currently available. In the case of chips that have an unlocked multiplier, this is an obvious choice, but owners of ordinary models without the “K” index will also have to buy motherboards based on a top chipset. At least until the first quarter of 2018, when the more affordable Intel 300-series PCHs should arrive.
Overclocking
Coffee Lake processors use an improved 14nm process technology. Intel already has extensive experience in the production of crystals according to these standards, therefore it is not surprising that the manufacturer managed to improve the technology, even without a nominal transition to the next stage — 10 nm.
The improvements allowed Intel to relatively painlessly increase the number of processing cores from 4 to 6, as well as increasing the size of the L3 cache, while practically keeping power consumption at the same level. Thermal pack of unlocked 6-core Coffee Lake chips falls within 95W, while for 4-core Kaby Lake TDP was up to 91W.
It is not worth expecting significant frequency progress from Coffee Lake. Still, processors have increased the number of computing units, which partly compensates for the improvement in manufacturing technology at the silicon level.
During experiments with the Core i5-8600K in express mode, we managed to get 4800 MHz at a supply voltage of 1.32 V. That is, the overclocking level is close to what we managed to get for Kaby Lake processors. We can also assume that the Core i5 chips will have a lower frequency potential than the Core i7. We assume that the crystals undergo additional selection and the most «mature» plates are subsequently used for processors of the older line.

To evaluate the performance of the Core i5-8600K, we used the Core i5-7600K chip. It is very interesting how much the new processor will be more productive than its predecessor. The results of the previous Core i7-8700K test will also come in handy here. In this case, we can evaluate the benefits of using Hyper-Threading, but perhaps even more interesting will be the confrontation between the Core i5-8600K and the Core i7-7700K, which allows us to understand what the balance of power between a “pure” 6-core processor and a top 4-core processor will be. a nuclear chip of the previous generation, which has support for Hyper-Threading and allows you to process up to 8 data streams simultaneously. AMD Ryzen 7 1700X results will also be useful.
The mandatory processor benchmark, Cinebench R15, once again demonstrates the benefits of multi-core processors even in conditions where the performance of a single block cannot boast of high efficiency. On the two charts, the Ryzen 7 1700X takes diametrically opposite positions — the leader in multi-threaded mode and lagging behind in single-threaded processing. The Core i5-8600K was faster than the Core i5-7600K by as much as 53%. How so? After all, the number of cores has increased one and a half times, that is, even according to the most daring assumptions, performance should have increased by a maximum of one and a half times. The fact is that in normal mode, the frequency of the Core i5-8600K with a load on all cores is 4100 MHz, but the Core i5-7600K in this case runs at 4000 MHz.
It is significant that six full-fledged cores allowed the Core i5-8600K to outperform the Core i7-7700K by 5%. Hyper-Threading technology in such tasks, of course, significantly increases performance, but the option of 4 cores and 8 threads here turned out to be less preferable than 6 cores.
Results in WinRAR are affected by many factors, including the number of threads, cache sizes, memory subsystem operation. The Core i5-8600K was able to noticeably improve the performance of the Core i5-7600K, but nevertheless lost almost a quarter to the Core i7-7700K. At the same time, in 7-Zip, the processors turned out to be almost equal, again with a 53% advantage over the Core i5-7600K. At the same time, the Core i7-8700K is 40% ahead of the Core i5-8600K. HT support, increased L3 cache and a higher operating frequency when loading all cores (4300 MHz vs. 4100 MHz) have an effect.
In Blender and Fryrender applications the situation is very similar. The Core i5-8600K took slightly longer (5-7%) than the Core i7-7700K to finish rendering the scene. At the same time, the new product has more than a 1.5-fold increase in performance compared to the Core i5-7600K.
When transcoding 4K video to Full HD with the H.265 codec, the Core i5-8600K and Core i7-7700K chips show almost identical results with a minimal overweight of the cheeky 6-core Coffee Lake.
But during the final rendering of the video in Adobe Premier Pro CC, the newcomer already had a quite perceptible 10% advantage over the top quad-core of the previous generation. At the same time, the Core i5-8600K here even almost managed to overtake the Ryzen 7 1700X. Using the Core i7-8700K in any case provides an additional performance boost, but its value varies significantly depending on the task. During video processing, we see an advantage at the level of 18-35%.
Synthetic tests Performance Test 9 and GeekBench 4.1.3 generally show a similar picture. The Core i5-8600K has a 40% advantage over the Core i5-7600K and 6-13% over the Core i7-7700K. Additional HT support and a larger L3 leave the Core i7-8700K out of reach for mid-range chips. At least when it comes to normal CPU operation modes.
In the presented environment, the Core i5-7600K looks like a poor relative at someone else’s holiday of life. These are the realities. Processors with similar characteristics within the 8th generation Intel Core chips are downgraded and will be referred to only as Core i3.
Games
Game disciplines are also important when it comes to a powerful home system. It is generally accepted that in this case the main role is played by the video card. This is true, but only partly. Game developers are increasingly beginning to adapt to multi-threaded algorithms, simultaneously increasing the complexity of tasks solved using the CPU. There are already examples when a 4-core processor is not a panacea and does not guarantee a comfortable game. The cases are still isolated, but these are no longer exceptions, but a systematic shift in emphasis.
It is curious to start the game pool with synthetics. Two tests from the 3DMark set do not reveal the winner of the most interesting pair — Core i5-8600K vs. Core i7-7700K. The latter scores more points in the processor calculations from the Fire Strike stage, while in Time Spy the already 6-core Core i5 has an advantage. In both cases, the difference is within 5–10%. If we think about the Core i5-7600K, then it remains far behind. But, these are still the potential capabilities of the chips. Game reality is different.
Even with medium graphics quality settings, the video card remains the limiter in many projects. However, even in these cases, processors of the same architecture with a large number of cores allow you to get slightly higher minimum fps.
However, 100% GPU utilization doesn’t mean that CPU performance doesn’t matter. For example, Far Cry Primal has frankly weak optimization for multithreading. At the same time, the previous generation Core i5 here looks more modest than older models, not to mention the Ryzen 7 1700X. The situation is similar in Dirt Rally, with the only difference being that the autosim received Coffee Lake very warmly.
Already old by gaming standards, Thief is well optimized for multi-threaded execution. The Core i5-8600K managed to outperform the Core i7-7700K here, while the Core i5-7600K has a weaker position.
The Witcher: Wild Hunt has a very uneven CPU usage pattern. In open desert locations, the load of a 4-core processor may not exceed 40%, and during tests in the city, all computing units can be loaded at 100%. This does not affect the comfort of the game, but this is an occasion to think about a larger margin of performance.
The second part of the strategic «wahi» was a pleasant continuation of a successful series of total war. Total War: Warhammer II will torture your video card and drive in every possible way, but in terms of processor requirements, the game turned out to be very loyal. Even in low-quality graphics mode, during the built-in battle benchmark test, the 4-core Core i5-7600K is only 50-60% loaded, and the 16-thread Ryzen 7 1700X is even 25% loaded. And this is at maximum GPU load. As a result, we have equal frame/s rates for all Intel chips and the minimum lag of the AMD processor.
Fans of maximum graphics quality for Total War: Warhammer II will need a top-end graphics card, especially for modes above Full HD. We also highly recommend installing the game on an SSD. In principle, like everyone else, but here the wishes are special.
In the list of test stages, we also included the game Watch Dogs 2, which is famous for its multi-threaded optimization. And I must say that in this respect it did not disappoint. To increase the impact of the processor on performance, we used a common preset with medium graphics quality, but adjusted for maximum object geometry detail and model quality.
Unfortunately, the game does not have a built-in benchmark that allows you to repeat the sequence of scenes on the test segment with perfect accuracy. To get an idea of what the systems in this game could do, we had to bike around San Francisco non-stop for 5-minute sessions while engaging in relatively honest ways of extorting money from the public, undermining sewers and rowdy at traffic lights. Three sessions were conducted on systems with each of the processors, the results were averaged. This method, although not perfect, still gives a general idea of the performance of systems and values that can be compared.
Watch Dogs 2 is very well optimized for multithreading. In this context, it was unusual to see 80-90% load on all 16 threads of the available Ryzen 7 1700X. In the mode used, the AMD processor, although it does not have a very noticeable advantage over the Core i5-7600K in terms of average fps, subjectively, the platform’s responsiveness was noticeably better. This is partly confirmed by the higher minimum fps. The Core i5-8600K turned out to be more interesting here than the Core i7-7700K, and the new top — Core i7-8700K — provided maximum gaming comfort.
The processor subtest from Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation shows a noticeable advantage of the Core i5-8600K over its predecessor, but these efforts were not enough to overtake the Core i7-7700K. The top 4-core processor with HT is 5% ahead.
The so-called AI test is now a separate item in Civilization VI. The time required by the system for one step depends on the speed of calculations. It would seem that here it is, an ideal task for parallel processing. But, the developers, alas, still have not come to such a decision. The load of even a 4-core processor here fluctuates between 50-80%, and 6-core processors do not bring a noticeable increase, although they have a minimal advantage over 7th generation models. Ryzen 7 1700X, with all its hidden reserves, is 20-25% more thoughtful than Intel chips. If human civilization evolved at the same pace as the support for multithreading in the Civilization series, then we would still be tying stones to sticks.
Power Consumption
Two additional cores increased the power consumption of Coffee Lake processors as expected. According to this indicator, the Core i5-8600K came close to the Core i7-7700K.
A medium-class air cooler will suffice to cool the chip in normal mode. if you plan to overclock, a more efficient model is desirable.

Pros:
Excellent performance in multi-threaded applications; 6 cores; aggressive Turbo Boost; 9MB L3 cache; overclocking capabilityCons:
Availability for sale; need a new motherboard on Intel Z370Conclusion:
The new Intel Core i5 in general and the Core i5-8600K in particular are becoming a very good solution for mid-range systems. An increase in the number of cores, as expected, improves the capabilities of chips in multi-threaded tasks, and resource-intensive games can increasingly be attributed to the latter. The new 6-core model often manages to come close to or even outperform the top-end chip of the previous generation, the Core i7-7700K. Six cores, increased L3 capacity, aggressive Turbo Boost algorithm and additional frequency potential for overclocking make the Core i5-8600K an attractive option for those who are planning to build a powerful desktop system. And even the need to buy a motherboard based on the Intel Z370 chipset looks logical here. The only question is how quickly the manufacturer will be able to cope with the shortage of older Coffee Lake models, which at the start takes place not only in Ukraine, but even in the American market.Specifications
Core i5-8400 vs Ryzen 5 5600X bottleneck: RTX 3060 Ti analysis
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti — 1080p bottleneck analysis
The bottleneck depends on many factors, including the CPU, GPU, and game. Core i5-8400 vs Ryzen 5 5600X bottleneck summary RTX 3060 Ti analysis based on 6 games at 1080p using NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti:

in an ideal world, we want to see a beautiful thin «fuzzy» line stretching from one end of the diagram to the other. what we don’t want to see are «thorns». these bursts represent delays in frame time rendering and are where stuttering occurs if they exceed a given threshold.
random, thin spikes are not a big problem, however, if a block of spikes is in close proximity to each other, especially if those spikes are jumping quite high, they are more likely to be noticeable and interpreted as «stuttering».
Using frame time analysis as a means of measuring GPU performance is undoubtedly a valuable tool. so much so that some would say it should replace the frame-per-second performance measurement method. we’d be inclined to agree because, as stated earlier, it doesn’t make sense to have a GPU that can put out stupidly high frame rates if the end product results in choppy gameplay. for gamers, frame-time lag is undoubtedly the best measurement, as it is the one that “measures the gameplay”.
Of course a frame time graph can tell you which card is faster just by its length and thus the number of frames rendered in a given period, but to get an accurate figure you also have to calculate it yourself to get an accurate, accurate to the second average fps. It’s not good to say that an entry-level card has excellent frame time latency and then compare it to a much faster (fps) card that has slower latency. if both cards are below your own perceived level, you will obviously choose the faster card.

The Core i5-8400 is a locked processor anyway, so the reason most enthusiasts would have had for spending extra (overclocking) doesn’t apply here.
The Core i5-8400 sits in the middle of Intel’s new stack of mainstream consumer CPUs, above a pair of four-core/four-thread Core i3 chips, and below a pair of six-core/12-thread Core i7 chips ..
The fantastic-value Core i5 8400 is the gamer’s chip from Intel’s 8th Gen Coffee Lake range, which is surprising considering the K-series i5 is capable of hitting 5. 1GHz without issue.
