Even in terms of power consumption, the Intel Alder Lake CPUs have made significant progress. The new series of Intel Core i5-12600K processors draws a lot less power for the same amount of work compared to its predecessors. That being said the AMD Ryzen 5 series is still the undisputed champion when it comes to offering power efficiency. The AMD Ryzen CPU completely dominates Intel CPUs in this department. Even with the latest Intel i5 CPU, they required more power compared to the Ryzen 5 series. Another thing you should know is that the new Alder lake CPUs are not supported by the existing motherboards in the market. For that, you need to have an LGA 1700 CPU socket which is only available on the new Z690 motherboards. These motherboards are slightly expensive and increase the overall cost of your PC.
So if you really want to experience the latest 12th gen Intel Core i5 CPUs you’ll definitely need to buy the new Z690 motherboard. Along with the new Z690 motherboard, you will also need to invest some more in those DDR5 modules which will put a significant hole in your budget. Also, the best and high-performing DDR5 RAM modules are pretty expensive and very rare to find in the current market.
On the other hand, if you decide you upgrade to AMD Ryzen 5 series processor then it is not that much expensive. The current Ryzen series 5 thankfully supports the existing motherboards with an AM4 socket which is really not that expensive. And talking about the DDR5 memory modules which AMD clearly does not support; you really don’t have to worry about them too much as the current DDR4 modules are sufficiently powerful enough and there is still time for the DDR5 memory modules to mature. In a nutshell, the AMD Ryzen 5 is a range of 12-thread desktop processors that features a 64-bit quad and 86 Hexa-cores. Each chip within this series is based on Zen architecture, which is AMD’s third architectural design.
Generally, AMD Ryzen 5 microprocessors contain either 4 cores that can process 8 threads at once or 6 cores that can support 12 threads at once. This makes quad-core Ryzen 5 processors ideal choices for everyday, general computer use, with some of the faster processors even being suitable for gaming.
Intel i7 Processors Overview
First developed in 2008, the i7 processor is Intel’s Core i7 line of CPUs and has seen 9 generations of cards since its first release. Up until 2017, the Intel Core i7 was Intel’s fastest line of processors until the Intel Core i9 was released. At the time of writing, the Intel i7 range features processors that contain up to 8 cores, with a default clock speed of around 3.6GHz on average. This makes the Intel i7 range a favorite for gamers, PC builders, and content creators.
Architecture
The first specification we’re going to be taking a look at its architecture. All the Ryzen 5 processors are built using the same Zen microarchitecture, which is a type of architecture that was specifically designed in order to reduce overall power consumption, as well as to improve clock speeds.
As each Ryzen 5 processor is Zen-based, they are each made via a 14nm FinFET process, which helps to make the chip more efficient at carrying out instructions per cycle, as well as using less energy. When it comes to processors, the bigger the cache, the better! Intel Core i5-12500 vs AMD Ryzen 5 5500: Performance Difference
Both Intel Core i5-12500 and the Ryzen 5 5500 chips are very similar in terms of the overall specifications. The Core i5-12500 doesn’t have efficiency cores, so we’re looking at six performance cores along with twelve threads. The core configuration is similar to that of the Ryzen 5 5500, which also has six cores and twelve threads with support for SMT. As for the core frequencies, the Core i5 12500 has a base frequency of 3.0GHz whereas the Ryzen 5 5500 has a faster base frequency at 3.6GHz.
Intel has a higher max boost frequency coming in at 4.6GHz as opposed to just the 4.2GHz in Ryzen’s case. It’s worth pointing out that the Intel Core o5-12500 lacks the Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 Frequency support as it’s only reserved for the higher-end chips in the portfolio. While the Intel Core i5-12500 has slightly higher cache memory, we don’t think it’s significant enough to cause a difference in performance. If anything, we expect both chips to have the same level of performance.
It’s also worth pointing out that the Intel Core i5-12500 comes with integrated graphics, whereas the Ryzen 5 5500 doesn’t. This means you’ll need a dedicated graphics card to use this CPU. That being said, both chips come bundled with their own stock CPU cooler. While the Intel Core i5-12500 comes with a Laminar cooler, the Ryzen 5 5500 comes with a Wraith Stealth cooler. Both stock coolers are equally good, so you won’t have to spend on a third-party cooler.
Lastly, it’s worth pointing out that the Ryze 5 5500 CPU tops out at PCIe 3.0. This means you won’t be able to take advantage of PCIe 4.0 peripherals including the new SSDs, graphics, cards, and more. The Intel chip, in comparison, has support for both PCIe 4.0 as well as PCIe 5.0. The Ryzen 5 5500 is also limited to just DDR4 memory whereas the Intel processor has support for DDR5 memory modules as well. We’re yet to get our hands on this either of these chips, so we’ll have a more detailed comparison once we have a chance to test them.

This is good for an entry-level build and we think it’s best paired with a budget B550 motherboard. The Ryzen 5 5500 will go on sale early in April. The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X debuted on November 5, 2020, with a suggested retail price of $299. It’s remained around that price since then, only falling to around $280-$290 after the release of Intel’s Alder Lake processors. Although stock was hard to come by early on, it has been widely available throughout 2021 and into 2022.
The Intel Core i5-12400F went on sale on January 4, 2022, with a price tag of just $190. Stock varies by retailer, but it’s not too difficult to find shortly after release. Motherboard prices, however, are higher for the Intel CPU, demanding a $70 premium on entry-level motherboards compared to the options for AMD Ryzen buyers.
Performance
Intel
The Intel Core-i5 12400F, like other non-K designs from the Alder Lake generation of processors, has no efficiency (E) cores running alongside the higher-power performance (P) cores, but that merely brings it to parity with the Ryzen 5600X core for core, and it doesn’t appear to have slowed it down in the sort of mid-range gaming that it’s targeting. In most games, the 12400F is hotly competitive with the 5600X, even beating it in some by a small margin. In others, like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Age of Empires 4, and Rainbow Six Siege, it does fall behind by a few percentage points, but it never strays into double digits.
In productivity tasks like photo and video editing, the 12400F is the stronger CPU when the tasks are predominantly single-threaded, but it isn’t quite as strong as the 5600X when all the AMD chip’s cores can be brought to bear. For the most part, they tend to trade blows, although the 5600X is again, typically the slightly more capable CPU.
For the price, this makes the 12400F a very compelling option for anyone looking at an affordable, mid-range system for work or play. Especially as, unlike higher-end Alder Lake processors, it retains a comfortable 65W TDP, which matches the 5600X. Neither chip gets particularly hot or demands much power, making them great options for small form factor builds.
PCIExpress and memory support
There are some feature differences between the Intel and AMD platforms, but you may not end up using them on a mid-range system. On higher-end Intel 600-series motherboards, you have the option of PCIExpress 5 slots and DDR5 memory support. These offer greater storage speed (when the drives become more readily available) and greater memory bandwidth (when DDR5 sticks are more available and affordable).
As it stands, AMD’s compatible 400 and 500 series (and even some select 300-series) motherboards provide up to PCIExpress 4 support, and exclusively support DDR4 memory.
As it stands in early-2022, there’s little benefit to having a high-end motherboard to use with a 12400F CPU. They’re expensive, you can’t get the drives or sticks to fully take advantage of it, and even if you could, the real-world performance advantage would be almost nothing.
Although the Intel platform currently has the better feature set on paper, it doesn’t offer any tangible benefit, and trying to make use of it would balloon your budget to the point where any cost savings by going with Alder Lake would be eliminated.
Buy the 12400F new, but the 5600X is a solid upgrade
If you’re looking to build or buy a brand new PC, the Intel Core i5-12400F is a fantastic option, offering mid-range performance in gaming and productivity tasks, at a very affordable price. Motherboards are still more expensive than they should be for this CPU, and you can’t take full advantage of the Alder Lake generation’s feature set without overpaying, but the 12400F outstrips most of its higher-end predecessors, and is hotly competitive with AMD’s much more expensive 5600X just about everywhere.
That said, if you have an existing AMD PC with an older Ryzen CPU and it’s compatible with the 5000 series, then the 5600X still represents a great upgrade path. The price could do with coming down, as it’s far less exciting a CPU in 2022 — easily falling behind the 12600K and 12700K in most scenarios — but it’s still an excellent processor for gaming, and photo and video editing. It’s a great upgrade, but with AMD’s Zen 4 approaching towards the end of the year and Alder Lake representing more exciting new build options right now, the Intel Core i5-12400F is definitely the more intriguing CPU for new PC buyers.

On which processor to choose a laptop? Compared fresh AMD Ryzen and Intel Core
The idea of comparison appeared with the advent of the sale of a laptop on the new AMD Ryzen 5 5500u processor. The model is not revolutionary, unlike other chips in this new line, and is built on last year’s architecture. However, it has been well improved. We took five laptops in the same chassis and the same brand to compare the new product with popular and fresh processors from Intel and AMD. If you choose a laptop and don’t really understand all these pieces of iron, then such a comparison will help you understand, at least in the direction of which processor to look.
Among the Ryzen 5000 notebook processors, the new Zen 3 architecture models are the most advanced. According to the characteristics and words of AMD, these are one of the most powerful mobile processors today. At the same time, three improved models on the old architecture got into the new line, one of which is the Ryzen 5 5500u participant in this article. The most important change is that SMT support has appeared, so the number of threads has doubled, and at the same time performance has increased. At least on paper. We decided to test this in practice, along the way comparing the new product with two competitors on the Intel Core i5 and i7 on the fresh Intel Tiger Lake platform.
Performance
Selected laptops are assembled in the same case, with the most similar configurations. It is highly likely that they have the same cooling. Unfortunately, we cannot separate them. Only the Core i7 laptop model with discrete graphics stands out. The same version, only with a built-in video chip, could not be quickly obtained for comparison. Otherwise, the laptops are very similar.

Synthetic tests showed the advantage of the laptop on the new Ryzen 5 5500u. In the Cinebench R23 full-core test, it scored 40% more than the Core i5 competitor and 31% more than the Core i7. Laptops on last year’s AMD Ryzen 5 and 7 processors also turned out to be weaker than the novelty in Cinebench R23. But in single-core tests, Intel processors scored more points than all AMD. So, the Core i7 was faster than the new Ryzen by 21% in Cinebench R23, by 19% in the CPU-Z benchmark and by 28% in Geekbench.
A serious practical load fell on Blender, a program for creating 3D graphics. The laptops were compared by the final rendering time of the Barcelona and Classroom demoscene on the Cycles engine. Below are the results on the graphs and the readings of the sensors in the laptops during the test, taken at approximately equal intervals of time.
AMD Ryzen 5 5500u was the fastest. For example, when rendering a Classroom project on mains power, it outperformed the Ryzen 5 4500u by nearly 25%, the Core i5 by 38%, and the Core i7 by 27%. As you can see from the graphs, the actual difference in minutes is small. But if the project is more voluminous, then rendering will take longer. Hence, a fast processor is a real advantage when working in serious programs.
What about heating? If you look at the same Blender, then the laptops on Intel processors were the hottest — 77-78 degrees on average. The Ryzen 5 4500u processor in the HP laptop kept an average temperature of 75°. The coldest were laptops on the new Ryzen 5 and last year’s Ryzen 7 — 65 ° and 59 °, respectively.

All laptops from the article easily cope with the office load: more than 20 Chrome tabs with Full HD videos on YouTube, operations in a huge Excel spreadsheet and background photo processing in Photoshop. All this worked simultaneously and did not interfere with the fast pace of work and switching between programs.
Graphics
The new Ryzen 5 5500u processor has added one graphics core and is clocked 100MHz faster than its predecessor, the Ryzen 4 4500u. The update affected the results: in all tests, the integrated graphics of the new processor turned out to be better than expected. In synthetics and in games, the new processor is also ahead of the Ryzen 7 4700u, albeit slightly.
An HP laptop with a discrete NVIDIA MX450 chip heavily influenced the comparison. There was no doubt that he would score the most points. Among the other models, the leader was the laptop on AMD Ryzen 5 5500u, then the models on Ryzen 7 and Core i5 showed approximately the same results.
What can you play? On all laptops with a built-in, you can confidently play multiplayer games at low settings, and some, such as World of Tanks, even at medium settings. Discrete graphics already gives a little more options, but there is still no talk of launching new major games. But old games like the beloved The Witcher 3 at low settings will please you with a stable high frame rate even on integrated graphics.
Run time
AMD laptops lasted an hour longer than Intel models. All devices were running a Full-HD movie, brightness set to 70%, keyboard backlight turned off, and «improved battery» mode set. The battery capacity in all laptops is the same.
Probably the energy efficiency of the processors themselves. For example, in the same Blender, on battery power, laptops on Intel consumed an average of 17-18 W, and on AMD — 14-14.5 W. The difference in final rendering time between mains and battery operation was most evident in the two Intel-powered laptops. Models based on AMD worked in Blender at approximately the same frequencies and with the same power consumption both from the mains and from the battery.
What can be upgraded
With a new Ryzen 5 laptop, things are strange. Monitoring and diagnostic programs do not see the memory slots, although the official specifications and service manual report the presence of two slots. AIDA64 sees two Micron 8 GB SODIMM modules in the DMI section. The SPD section is empty. The laptop cannot be disassembled.

What can be replaced in them? Based on the available information: all laptops have two memory slots available for upgrade. There is one slot occupied by a regular SSD drive, which can be replaced with a higher capacity option.
Design
The laptops look subjectively very good. All side faces have a beautiful deflection, and the bottom is in the form of a beveled pyramid. They have thin screen bezels and a keyboard slightly recessed into the case, which rises a couple of millimeters when the lid is opened. Special stops for this action are made of plastic.

All laptops have excellent keyboards. It is very pleasant to print on it. The keys are quiet, with solid tactile feedback and low travel. There is a digital block. Three Core i7, Ryzen 5 5500u and Ryzen 7 models feature an IPS screen from LG Display. In the other two IPS-matrix under the Chi Mei brand. Is there a difference? Yes there is. We tried to capture it in the photo. The differences are not only in viewing angles, which LG has more, but also in color reproduction, contrast and brightness. IPS from LG is clearly preferable to have in a laptop than a similar screen under the Chi Mei brand. These are also called «IPS-like».
Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to find out about this before buying. HP simply writes “IPS screen” in the descriptions for all laptops from the article. Other manufacturers sometimes honestly write about «IPS-like» matrices. But most often you will not be able to find out about the screen model before buying.
Results
The HP laptop with the new AMD Ryzen 5 5500u processor showed excellent results. In most tests, it outperformed popular processor models, including the latest Intel Core on the Tiger Lake platform in multi-threaded tests. The new processor was able to compete even with the old Ryzen 7 4700u. At the same time, it warmed up to adequate values, and the fan noise under high load was barely noticeable in the office.
Such results could be predicted even based on the characteristics on paper. In practice, now there is no doubt about the superiority of Ryzen laptops over models with Intel Core, especially with the latest mobile AMD update. But so far there are no normal sales of laptops with Ryzen on the new architecture, which promise an even greater increase in performance.
If we look specifically at HP laptops from the comparison, then these are excellent office machines. They will pull the majority of modern resource-intensive tasks. Outwardly, they look very decent. They have a thin body with a large screen size, a full-sized keyboard and good cooling. Three models have an IPS screen from LG. For home and work, HP Pavilion is the best choice. Another question is with what iron. According to our tests, the new AMD Ryzen 5 5500u processor will provide better performance than last year’s Ryzen 5 and Core i5, and will also be able to compete with Ryzen 7 and Core i7. The main thing is that the price of new items in the Catalog should be less than or comparable to the old models.

Just over a year ago, I compared three generations of AMD Ryzen processors. And now the moment has come for the release of Zen 3: a new microarchitecture, and not a minor update of Zen 2, changes the balance of power in the processor market.
Even at the time of the announcement of the new processors, AMD itself promised a significant increase in performance with a small price update. And here a radical change in the company’s policy happens: if earlier it offered an excellent combination of consumer qualities at a lower price than a competitor, now the main sore has been fixed — gaming performance. And if Ryzen processors with Zen 3 microarchitecture really have many claims with the epithet «best», then such a price reform can be justified. But first things first.
Today we will get acquainted with the younger representatives of the new processor line: Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X.
As the name suggests, these are the flagships of the six- and eight-core series of AMD processors, cheaper versions with a reduced frequency formula are expected in the future.
At this stage, the price of the Ryzen 7 5800X looks a little too high: around $450 there is already a ten-core competitor from Intel in the face of the i9-10850K. But it should be borne in mind that AMD has a sharp decrease in prices for processors in stores after the start of sales is the norm, with the same Ryzen 7 3800X there was a similar story. It remains only to wait for the appearance of the new products themselves in our retail chains.
A bit about Zen 3
The main thing in the new processors is actually the rejection of the modular system within a single chip. Now CCXs are eight-core with a single L3 cache, which saves us from the bottleneck in the form of Infinity Fabric when «communicating» cores within one CCD.
This maneuver cost the company three years behind in one of the main areas for which high-performance computers are built: fps in games.
This update (and the others we’ll talk about below) allowed AMD to keep its promise to keep the AM4 platform up to date until 2020.
The general structure of the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processors has also been preserved: there is one CCD (in which the only CCX is now), which, via Infinity Fabric, communicates with the I / O block (IOD), which has not changed. There is a half write bus for each CCD, the memory controller has not received global changes. For all instances of Zen 3 processors that were on hand, the memory frequency limit remained 3800 MHz. However, some BIOS versions allowed to work at frequencies close to 4 GHz with numerous errors, which gives some chance for improvements in the future.
A 16-byte write bus causes a sharp drop in the corresponding indicators in AIDA64. There is a decrease in memory delays and a slight but logical increase in the latency of the third level cache. In previous generations of Ryzen, the modular CCD system allowed each CCX to write and read to L3 in parallel, resulting in high throughput.
The following improvements deal with major architectural improvements that resulted in an IPC (instructions per cycle) improvement of 19% compared to Zen 2.
This includes the optimization of the first level cache, the acceleration of branch prediction mechanisms and the resolution of prediction errors, and the increase in Load/Store operations per clock. Computing blocks for integer and real data operations have been improved: schedulers are more capacious, more operations per clock, etc.
Improvement in manufacturing within the 7 nm process has also made it possible to change the frequency formula of processors: on average, the increase was 250 MHz or more in games and work applications without changing heat dissipation (TDP).
For example, in LinX, Ryzen 5000 processors exhibit high frequencies at maximum load, lower power consumption, and better performance than previous generation models.

Testing
Let’s start exploring new processors with SiSoftware Sandra: compare the main indicators with the Ryzen 5 3600X and Ryzen 7 3800X processors. The processors worked at stock frequencies without using PBO (automatic overclocking Precision Boost Overdrive), RAM in all cases was configured with the following parameters:
One of the key problems of Ryzen of past generations is poor performance under combined load, when there is an active use of cores located in different CCX. The main aspect is gaming performance. Some problems were solved by the Windows scheduler and power plans, but high latency was not to be avoided.

With the advent of Zen 3, everything has changed for Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7. Absolutely uniform access to the cores inside the CCX, which cannot but affect the final performance.
The degradation in cache throughput and inter-core communication is a consequence of the test application’s multi-threaded measurement. Previously, inside one CCD there were two complexes of 4 cores and two «pieces» of the third level cache of 16 MB each. Now the structure is unified, respectively, the speed indicators are not doubled. Will we see such an alignment in reality?
Improving IPC and increasing the clock speed allows us to achieve an improvement in performance in the Fire Strike physics test from the 3DMark package between two generations of Ryzen 5 by almost a quarter: 5600X catches up with Ryzen 7 3800X, having 2 cores less!
In Time Spy, the gap between generations is reduced to 15%, which cannot be attributed to an error.
Similar situation in Blender Benchmark 2.90: improved by increasing the clock frequency and architectural changes.
Cinebench R23, a new number-crushing novelty, where new Apple products shoot from two hands, does not take into account Zen 3 inter-core improvements and CCD solidity, so the increase again fluctuates around 20%.
In Geekbench 5, the situation is similar and repeats the main feature of Zen 3 — the best single-core performance among AMD and Intel desktop processors. It is thanks to this indicator that new items go into the lead.
There are practically no changes in AVX applications on factory settings.
In one of the main benchmarks, where until recently Intel processors were «on horseback», due to the totality of changes in Zen 3, we get an almost twofold increase in performance. A significant increase in Octane 2.0, which allows you to dominate other processors in browsers.
Gaming performance
But we are not going to work at computers, right? Games are what we assemble computers for, postpone vacations. What do we spend our salary on, what makes us happy or sad. This is where AMD Ryzen processors have never been first.
To compare with the processors already mentioned above, I decided to add the best gaming solution from a competitor — Intel Core i9-10900K. Paired with an MSI MEG Z490 ACE motherboard, the same dual-rank memory used in this test ran stable at 4500 MHz with 16-17-17-34 CR2 timings and narrowed secondary ones.
The frequencies of the cores and the ring bus remained at the factory settings.

Ryzen 7 5800X, having a lower frequency of cores and RAM, manages to sneak up close to the i9-10900K. Against the background of Zen 2, the growth is impressive, but the peculiarity of the game engine does not allow new products to fully reveal themselves.

In all respects, the Ryzen 7 5800X is again bullying the more «pumped» i9-10900K. The performance difference between generations of Zen 3 is much more impressive.

And now the Ryzen 5000 series shows its strengths. No, this is not an esports CSGO, where the source code of the game will fit into L3 of new products. This is quite a AAA project, in which Ryzen once had problems. And now, not the most top-end processor performs better than the i9-10900K with a very well-tuned memory. Let both be in stock, and during overclocking, the difference can be leveled — a historical moment. For too long, Intel has been playing its game with «small» AMD without noticing how the rules have been rewritten.
Total War Saga: Troy, FullHD, extreme quality settings .
Despite the game being tied to the number of cores, the i9-10900K can’t be kicked off the tail of Ryzen 7 with fewer cores. We observe almost parity between them.
Watch Dogs: Legion, FullHD, maximum quality settings without anti-aliasing, RTX and DLSS, 50% rendering percentage.
The game is dependent on single core performance and sympathizes with the i9 processor-10900K by a considerable margin. The differences between Ryzen generations do not exceed 15%, but the Ryzen 5 5600X breaks ahead.
4th generation Ryzen processors are a huge step forward. Thanks to the advanced architecture of Zen 3, we get an IPC improvement of up to 19%, debugging the technological process allows new products to work at higher frequencies. Today we looked at the «starter» package of processors, tomorrow we will talk about Ryzen 9: processors that were able to cross the 5 GHz bar and really are the best solutions in single-threaded performance.
The Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X perform well against the Ryzen 3000 in both desktop software and games. In the latter, it turns out to compete even with the top 10-core solution from Intel. The stumbling block is the pricing policy at the start and the deficit. Having made its processors some $50 more expensive, AMD found itself in a situation where the price of Ryzen 7 5800X and Intel Core i9-10850K is almost the same in the Russian market (as well as in foreign markets), but the performance is not.
