One of Microsoft’s latest decisions involved the company’s announcement that owners of Windows 7 and Windows 8. 1 CPUs couldn’t use the newest processors, such as Intel’s Kaby Lake or AMD’s Ryzen, unless they run Windows 10.

No more updates for Windows 7 and 8.1

A computer upgraded to the newest chips but still running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 is not going to get updates anymore. Microsoft explained in a note that the “PC uses a processor that is designed for the latest version of Windows”, suggesting that users should upgrade to Windows 10.

The patch to bypass the OS limitation

GitHub user zeffy seems to have found a solution to this restriction by analyzing the KB4012218 patch shipped by Microsoft a couple of days ago and found that it was responsible for implementing the limitations blocking Windows Update on CPUs running on the latest chipsets.

Use Wufuc

After investigating the files, zeffy found out that the dynamic link library wuaueng.dll has to be patched in order to remove the limitation. He has since then developed a script that can be used on Windows 7 and Windows 8. 1 running 32-bit and 64-bit installations of the OS. Zeffy made the files available on his GitHub page. The script works by patching a system file that you’re strongly recommended to back up before proceeding.

This is only a temporary solution as Microsoft can and probably will introduce the restriction again anytime the company pleases. In other words, users might have to re-apply the patch later on though more modifications might be necessary if Microsoft chooses to block the method presented above.

Use WSUS Offline

If you need want to install Windows updates while using Kaby Lake and Ryzen CPUs, it’s advised to use WSUS Offline. This is an open-source software that will download the updates from Microsoft’s server and allow you to install them offline. To use this tool, just follow these steps:

  1. Download WSUS Offline Updater.
  2. Extract the files and run the UpdateGenerator.exe file.
  3. Check Verify downloaded updates option and click on Start. You can also check Include C++ Runtime Libraries and .Net Frameworks
  4. The download process will now start. This could take a couple of hours depending on the number of updates.
  5. After the updates are downloaded, run the Updateinstaller.exe file and click Start. You can check the Update C++ Runtime Libraries option as well before you start.
  6. The application will now install the downloaded updates. This might take a while depending on the number of updates.

Bear in mind that this is just a workaround, so you’ll have to use it whenever you want to download updates.

AMD: Sorry, there will be no official Ryzen drivers for Windows 7

AMD won’t be providing Windows 7 drivers for its upcoming Ryzen processors, the company said, contradicting recent reports that indicated AMD would support Microsoft’s older operating system.

AMD confirmed that it has tested and validated Ryzen on Windows 7, but that it won’t officially support the OS. It puts to rest the suggestion of a recent translated report from Computerbase that AMD would reverse its stance and ship Windows 7 drivers for Ryzen.

“To achieve the highest confidence in the performance of our AMD Ryzen desktop processors (formerly code-named ‘Summit Ridge’), AMD validated them across two different OS generations, Windows 7 and 10,” AMD said in a statement in response to a question from PCWorld. “However, only support and drivers for Windows 10 will be provided in AMD Ryzen desktop processor production parts.”

AMD is maintaining a position that it, along with Intel and Microsoft, has held for the last year. In January 2016, Microsoft said that Intel’s Kaby Lake and AMD’s Ryzen would only be supported under Windows 10, and reiterated that position last August. 

Why PC enthusiasts should care: Though Windows 10 is Microsoft’s most modern OS, with support for the latest APIs and drivers, a dedicated base of gamers has stuck with Windows 7. If AMD supplied Ryzen drivers for Windows 7, all would be well: Windows 7 users could continue to game on their older, stabler OS. AMD’s messaging, however, is a return to the status quo: If you want to run AMD’s latest chip, you should have Windows 10, too.


Microsoft’s busy building features like Game Mode into Windows 10 to lure PC gamers onto its most modern OS. 

The reason Microsoft gave for tying Windows 10 to Kaby Lake and Ryzen was simple: Silicon and software needs to be designed and shipped in close conjunction, so that the software can support the features of the processor and vice versa. Windows 7, for example, simply couldn’t anticipate features that chip vendors would include later. Microsoft stopped mainstream support for Windows 7 in 2015, and extended support will end in 2020. (As it is, Microsoft only grudgingly added support for Intel’s prior Skylake chip on Windows 10 after customer complaints.)

“As new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support,” a Microsoft spokeswoman said last August. “This enables us to focus on deep integration between Windows and the silicon, while maintaining maximum reliability and compatibility with previous generations of platform and silicon. ” 

At this point, AMD has “verified”, or tested, that a Windows 7 PC powered by Ryzen will boot. But will it take advantage of all of Ryzen’s capabilities? That seems less likely. But after a while, after Windows 7 downloaded and installed all updates through Windows Update, the system stopped receiving new updates with the following error:

When attempting to install a signed video driver downloaded from a manufacturer’s driver, the error «This system does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software» appears.

Wufuc — Windows Update Recovery Patch

There is an unofficial workaround to remove the «Hardware not supported» message and restore the ability to receive and install security updates on Windows 7 and 8.1 computers with Intel Kaby Lake, AMD Ryzen, and other processors unsupported CPUs.

GitHub user Zeffy has released a small patch W ufuc (windows update . … you get the idea), which allows you to get rid of the «incompatible hardware» problem. The patch disables the Update Center message about hardware incompatibility and allows the computer to receive updates from Windows Update. The latest stable version of the Wufuc patch can be downloaded here: https://github.com/zeffy/wufuc/releases/latest.

Wufuc is available for both x86 and x64 systems.

According to information from Zeffy, the function of detecting the type of processor and preventing updates is located in the library wuaueng.dll . Initially, the Wufuc patch replaced this file, but since this solution is unstable against updating the file with the next Windows Update, in subsequent releases of Wufuc, the logic of the patch has been changed.

The wuaueng.dll file is no longer actually replaced. The wufuc_setup_x64.msi installer registers a new scheduler job that starts wufuc when the computer boots. wufuc then injects itself into the service host process or wuauserv service and intercepts the call to the IsDeviceServiceable and IsCPUSupported functions, modifying the returned response.
