Creative FPS 2000 Four Point Surround

Introduction
Ever since Creative
Labs merged with Henry Kloss’ Cambridge Sound System to manufacture
PC speakers, they have since been releasing more powerful speakers
for the PC. Their initial releases (e.g. SBS 20) were never the type
of speakers that games and music enthusiasts wanted. When PC works
first came out, people generally compared it with Altec Lansing ACS45/44
series. Many would agree the Bass was pretty good but sound was too
low and the ACS45 was still the preferred choice to many. The Four
Point Surround Sound System was generally a cheap gimmick, which many
never actually fell for and Creative probably felt the pinch and seriously
needed something to kick off their four-speaker configuration. The
other 2 speaker the MicroWorks and SoundWorks were only 2 speaker
1 Subwoofer configuration, both were excellent speakers, especially
the MicroWorks but never really found a niche in the gaming/home user
world. The Desktop Theater 5.1 had some pretty good features like
AC3 support but most of its speaker/sub came from the PC works family
and therefore was not in a class of its own even though the price
was otherwise.
This time round
Creative came out with something pretty outstanding if I should say
so myself. THE Four Point Surround Sound 2000 Digital. I would generally
say this is THE set of speaker to pair up with the Sound Blaster Live.
It is a digital speaker that accepts signals from a 9 pin digital
DIN (not AC3 SPDIF cable) from the digital I/O card. (Finally got
to use the Digital card from my SBLive . .. whew no waste). However,
if you are using the SBLive Value, Monster Sound MX300 or even a 16Bit
sound card, you may still use the analog inputs on the FPS 2000. If
your sound card supports 4 speaker configuration, that’s great, but
however if it does not, well not to worry as the FPS 2000 will split
the signal from the front to rear, meaning you’ll have 2 left and
2 right speakers.
The satellite
speaker from the FPS2000 are fantastic, they are the same type of
speakers the Desktop Theater 5.1 used for the front. The PC Works
, FPS 1000 and the Desktop Theater 5.1 uses even smaller satellite
speaker. As for the Subwoofer, the FPS 2000 comes with a pretty big
Subwoofer at 14″ driving at 25 watts compared to the others driving
at only 8 — 10 watts. Obviously the FPS 2000 is technically more powerful
than the others (with exception to the MicroWorks). Another cool thing
about it is that it’s Black in color and not the Plain-Jane white
we see so often. Anyway so much for its physical appearance. Let’s
see how this baby rocks.

The
Good
Features &
Benefits
FourPointSurround
FPS2000 Digital consists of four 3″-wide satellite speaker cubes,
plus a compact, floor-standing subwoofer cabinet. The four compact
satellites create realistic four-channel positional audio while the
subwoofer can be positioned on the floor — behind your TV, under
your desk, or behind furnitures, out of the way, for best bass response.
Possible
placement solutions would be
A — Placing the
rear speakers on the left and right side of the wall.
B — Placing the
rear speakers behind the user
C — Placing the
rear speaker at the edge of a wide table while front speaker next
to the monitor
D — Place the
rear speaker below the table top at each side
Note: The satellite
speakers are magnetically shielded so it will not cause any interference
with other electronic device e.g. monitor. However, the Sub Woofer
is not and it is advisable to place it further away from other electronic
devices, to prevent magnetic interference.
The FourPointSurround
FPS2000 Digital system delivers a carefully fine-tuned stereo sound
system, usually produced by expensive home surround stereo systems.
It is best suited for the computer PC environment with a small surrounding.
2 top areas where these speakers really impressed me were in the games
and movie testing. They not only sounded good, they actually sound
life like.
I ran up a few
movies to check out the quality of the speaker. Running the take off
scene from Top Gun sounded superb. I jack the volume all the way to
100% and there was simply no distortion and the quality of the sound
was still sharp, clear and crisp. (Note the max volume out of my DVD/VCD
encoder card was set at 86% though). Explosions and other sound effects
were just as good. The sound driven out from the satellite speaker
was very impressive. The Sub Woofer was pretty strong too; anyone
within a 5m radius can probably feel the impact coming from the woofer.
The sound got even better when I ran my DVD movies. It was exceptionally
clear, crisp and sharp.
Many would say
that AC3 support should be added in, but to me it is quite redundant.
AC3/THX sound system are great when played for a large audience in
a large theater, but when you are in a room by yourself or with a
couple of friends, such a system is unnoticeable. Since the FPS200
was meant for a small enclosed area, it need not provide such feature.
Allowing the SBLive Liveware 2.0 to set the environment will be more
than adequate.
I tested the FPS2000
playing Unreal with EAX enable. Unreal is probably one of the best
games for testing out your speakers as it sports a lot of features.
While playing the game, I deliberately lower the background music
to concentrate more on the movement sound. The life likeness of the
sound was probably due to my SBLive but the fact that the FPS2000
was able to deliver top clarity audio really impressed me. Each footstep
and movement felt like they were coming from different directions
and one could easily know where it is coming from. The rear speaker
actually added more atmosphere to the game than ever before. Previously,
I was using a Pioneer Dolby Digital Home Entertainment Sound System
with a 5 set Philip speaker system along with a Yamaha 25-Watt Sub
Woofer. Even though this setup costs more than $800, it was unable
to deliver such realism to the game ambience which the FPS200 could.
In Need For Speed 3, the engines and screeching sound from the tires
were easily heard and the direction of the sound was easily identifiable.
The FPS 2000 with a SBLive card and a game that supports EAX is truly
wonderful.
Aureal could probably
gang up with Altec Lansing to give Creative a run for its money but
for now I can certainly say that this is the best 3D Sound Solution
currently available.

Installation
Take advantage of the
clear, distortion-free audio by connecting the Digital DIN output
of your FourPointSurround FPS2000 Digital speakers to the Sound
Blaster Live! Digital I/O card.
Just follow these simple
steps to unleash the full effect of your digital speakers:
|
1. |
Insert Note: |
2. |
Insert |
|
3. |
Complete
|
That’s
it! You are now ready to experience 3D digital audio like never
before.
Note:
FourPointSurround
FPS2000 Digital will detect the presence of a plug connected to
the DIGITAL DIN input and give the DIGITAL DIN input priority.
Any signal present at the AUDIO INPUT will be ignored. Be sure
to remove the plug from the DIGITAL DIN INPUT if you wish to listen
to a sound source through the analog AUDIO INPUT.
The
Sub woofer is pretty big compared to other sub-woofers from Creative.
It is made of Solid wood. This is great as the resonance that
the wood produces is very warm and one actually feels it rather
than hears it. Plastic generally generates vibration, which sound
very cheap. If you’d notice the yellow label on the sub woofer,
it is a heat hazard warning. There are heat sinks for the speakers
but running them at about 85% — 75% loud for more than 4 hours
playing Star Wars the heat generated was so low that I did not
even notice. (Note: The room was Air Conditioned at 23 degree
Celsius)
The
position of the sub woofer was below my table just behind a wall.
It is important to note where to position the sub woofer so as
to achieve optimal sound. In fact, incorrect placement can lead
to annoying sound. I once saw a joker place the sub woofer of
his ACS45 on the top shelf of his Sitoca computer table, he kept
complaining of headaches. Thank God Sitoca builds solid table
or his table would be shaking every time there is sound. Anyway,
I quickly placed it on the floor for him and he immediately heard
the difference. A good position to place the sub woofer is on
the floor with nothing beneath it and its behind facing a solid
wall. The wall will provide a reflecting effect that really enhances
the feel of the bass. Do not crowd anything around the speaker,
as this would affect the sound.
Above
is the external volume controller where you can adjust the balance
for the Front and Rear speakers. This is pretty useful if your
speakers are situated too far apart. Many people will face the
problem of not being able to place the rear speakers closer than
they want to. Now, all you have to do is adjust the balance more
to the rear to accommodate for the lost sound.

The Bad
Well I can’t think
of many bad things about this set of speaker. It’s Good … real good
in fact. However there are a couple of things I’d like to mention
is that the speakers are meant for PCs inside a room. They don’t sound
that great in a large open area. When I was at A-Zone and heard the
display set I was not that impressed with it, as the surrounding area
was pretty huge. However, after bringing it home, man, did my impression
change. However, I’d like to note that the even though the Sub Woofer
was about 1.5 times more powerful than the PC Works, FPS 1000 and
the Desktop 5.1, it could have been better. I feel that at times the
feeling is not strong enough unless you adjust the Sub-Woofer volume.
Ah yes, not to mention the volume control for the sub woofer volume
control is located at the side of the Woofer where all the cables
are connected too. It is a real pain in the butt (actually pain in
the head) as I kept hitting my head on the table top to reach the
control. They should have place the volume control on the remote volume
control stick too. Overall, most would find that the sub woofer would
be more than sufficient.
Another thing
that disappointed me was the lack of an equalizer control. The Desktop
5.1 had some pretty nifty external box controls while the FPS 2000
had only a volume and Front/Rear balance control. It would be great
if Creative could add a Treble, Bass and other controls to the external
controller.
Back
to top
This is really
a good set of speakers for the PC, if not one of the finest. It carries
good sound and provide good warm bass while still maintaining the
quality and clarity of the output. It’s fantastic for games and watching
movies off your PC in a room. For the price of slightly over $300,
it is well worth every cent spent. If you have the budget for it then
go for it especially if you own the Sound Blaster Live.

If there is any damage, do not install the system. If there is any problem, or if anything is missing, call the store where the system was purchased or refer to the “Technical Support” section on pages 12-13. Save the carton and its inserts in case you need to transport your FPS2000 Digital system later. Overview Installation Sequence The four small satellite speakers of the FPS2000 Digital are magnetically shielded. They can be placed next to a computer monitor.
The subwoofer/ amplifier is not shielded and should be placed at least 18 inches away from a computer monitor. The subwoofer is designed to sit on the floor beneath a desk, and sounds best in this position. The satellites used for the front left and right channels should flank the computer monitor. The satellites used for the rear left and right channels can be placed on the desktop, on floor stands, or attached to other sites (using screws). 1. Read through the instructions before installing the speakers. The instructions assume you have a 4-channel sound card–one that supports DirectSound®3D and has separate front and rear stereo minijack outputs. If your sound card has a single stereo minijack line output, please read the note under “Audio Signal Connections” on page 7. 2. Place the satellites and the subwoofer at appropriate sites near your computer. Attach the stands, if necessary. 2 FPS2000 Rev.C 6 4/17/00, 4:09 PM 3. To help you identify each satellite’s channel, apply the appropriate preprinted label to the rear of each satellite.
4. Connect the four satellites to the back of the subwoofer enclosure. Leave all the wires accessible. 5. Connect your sound card outputs to the subwoofer. Speaker Placement 6. Connect the Volume Control to the subwoofer. 7. Connect the power supply adapter. 8. Listen to the system and adjust the Bass Level control for pleasing bass output. 9. You may wish to experiment with satellite placement briefly before concealing the connecting wires and making the installation more permanent. A The Front Satellites The front left and right satellites should be placed to the sides of the monitor. Install the desktop stands if placing the satellites on the desktop. The Rear Satellites If you are lucky enough to have side walls close to your listening position, excellent placement for the rear left and right satellites is behind your listening position, slightly above ear level (use a screw to hang each satellite, see diagram A). Do not be concerned if this is not practical, since any rear satellite B placement behind or to the side of the listening position will provide strong directional and surround effects.
The rear satellites may be installed on their convenient floor stands. The stands should be positioned behind your listening position and aimed at the listener. The stands are small enough to be stowed underneath or alongside a desk when not in use (see diagram B). If none of these locations are practical, the rear satellites may be placed in convenient sites alongside the listener, including sites slightly forward of the listening location. C The rear satellites do not have to be at the same height, or at the same height as the front sat-ellites. Try the extreme corners of a desk using the desktop stands (C) or attach the rear satellites under a desktop or at the sides of a desk using the hook & loop fasteners (D). The Subwoofer The subwoofer’s optimum position is on the floor against the wall. The closer the subwoofer is to a corner, the stronger the maximum bass output. Position the subwoofer so that its connection panel is facing a wall, shielded from inadvertent contact. D 3 FPS2000 Rev.
C 7 4/17/00, 4:09 PM Speaker Wiring Diagram Subwoofer Front Left Satellite Front Right Satellite Out To Computer Sound Card R REAR FRONT Audio Connection Cables F Rear Left Satellite Rear Right Satellite Power Supply Adapter Volume Control 4 FPS2000 Rev.C 8 4/17/00, 4:09 PM Satellite Connections Typically, the 3 meter speaker cables will connect the front satellites to the subwoofer and the 5 meter cables will connect the rear satellites to the subwoofer. A panel of eight self-adhesive labels is provided to identify each satellite and the opposite end of the cable connected to a satellite. 1. Identify the two 3 meter cables. Most satellites will be used with their desktop stands. In this case, thread one end of a 3 meter cable through the hole in the desktop stand. Connect this end to one satellite, (as shown in diagram E). If used, carefully insert the desktop stand’s attachment arm into the socket in the back of the satellite, taking up any slack in the cable as required. 2. Remove the backing from the small, round “FRONT LEFT” label and apply it to the back of the satellite (see diagram E).
3. Remove the backing from the remaining, longer “FRONT LEFT” label and wrap it around the opposite end of the speaker cable you just connected. 4. Connect this end of the speaker cable to the red and black “FRONT LEFT” speaker connectors on the subwoofer. 5. Repeat this process for the Front Right, Rear Right and Rear Left satellites. Be sure to use the remaining 3 meter cable for the other front speaker. E Diagram E To connect the speaker wires to the spring loaded connectors on the satellite and subwoofer, push back on a spring-loaded tab to expose the connection hole. Insert the bare end of the wire into the exposed hole, then release the tab to lock the wire in place. Connect wires with red bands to red tab connectors and unmarked wires to black tab connectors. Notes: Matching red wires to red tabs and unmarked wires to black tabs insures the speakers all play “in-phase”. “Out of phase” connections will do no electrical harm, but the positional audio sound quality will be greatly reduced.
You can substitute regular 18 gauge speaker wire to create longer cables, if needed. 5 FPS2000 Rev.C 9 4/17/00, 4:09 PM Attaching The Floor Stands The rear satellites (with their desktop stands attached) may be installed in their floor stands. 1. One leg of each floor stand has a full length slot, with short notches opposite the slot at each end. Insert a satellite cable inside one of these legs by feeding it down the length of the full length slot. At each end, feed the cable through the short notches (see diagram G). 2. Insert the satellite end of the leg/cable assembly into the middle socket of the apex joint. Make sure the satellite cable exits through the short notch and not the full length slot (see diagram F). 3. Insert the two solid legs into the outside sockets in the apex joint. 4. Position the two “cut-away” sections of the desktop stand over the opening in the top of the apex joint, as shown in diagram F. Be sure to align the face of the stand with the face of the apex joint.
Lower the stand straight down into the apex joint. 5. Holding the ends of the apex joint, push on the front of the desktop stand until it slips back into the slot in the apex joint. Any signal present at the AUDIO input will be ignored. Be sure to remove the plug from the DIGITAL DIN input if you wish to listen to a sound source through the analog AUDIO INPUT. The FPS2000 Digital system comes with a separate wired Volume Control, designed to be positioned close at hand and affixed with the semipermanent mounting strip. It responds instantly and doesn’t require you to pause games or programs. But there are other output level controls present in software to consider. Versions of Microsoft® Windows® and most other operating systems offer an on-screen sound level Control, while most game programs provide yet another one. For the FPS2000 Digital Master Level Control to perform at its best, these “software” level controls should be set to an “optimum” position and then left alone. Set any software volume controls to approximately 75% of their maximum output level. This should allow the FPS2000 Digital Master Level Control to achieve the highest output level desired when set to its loudest setting.
If the FPS2000 Digital’s maximum output is still not sufficient at the extreme setting of its Volume Control, try increasing one, and only one, of the software volume controls to increase overall output. If you find the optimum output level of the FPS2000 Digital system occurs at too low a setting of its Volume Control, reduce the setting of one software volume control (preferably the operating system’s output level control) to achieve greater control range. Note: Some software volume controls may introduce distortion when set to their maximum level. Experiment to achieve the cleanest sound. Bass Level Control The output of the subwoofer can be adjusted to suit the listener’s taste. Start with the control in the 12 o’clock position (see diagram N). After using the system for a couple of hours, adjust the control up or down to fine-tune it. N REAR FRONT Adjusting Output Level 10 FPS2000 Rev.C 14 4/17/00, 4:10 PM Optimizing The Sound Of Your System Have a clear line of sight from your listening position to the satellites.
This prevents their higher frequencies from being blocked. It is not necessary for each satellite to be aimed directly at the listener. The relative strength of low-bass depends on how close the subwoofer is to intersecting room surfaces. The most bass output results from the subwoofer being placed on the floor in a corner. The least bass output results with the unit positioned away from any corners or walls. Once you have adjusted the Bass Level Control, leave it in that position. It should not be used to compensate for differences in recordings or games. Mounting The Satellites To the wall: To wall-mount the cubes on structurally strong surfaces (a wall stud or wood panelling), screw a M5 x 25mm screw into the material. Allow their heads to protrude about 1/4 inch to fit into the keyhole slots on the back of each cube (see diagram O). The plastic anchors supplied will be needed to secure the screws in most wall surfaces. If so, drill 1/4 inch holes in the wall, then tap the anchors into the holes until they are flush with the wall.
Then screw the screws into the anchors until they protrude about 1/4 inch. Be sure to apply the stick-on rubber feet to the back of the satellite cubes. This assures an acoustically secure installation. O Keyhole slot mounting 11 FPS2000 Rev.C 15 4/17/00, 4:10 PM Important Specifications Playback Levels FPS2000 Digital is intended for individual or small group listening and will achieve surprisingly high output levels. However, playing the system continuously at overly loud, distorted levels on heavy bass program material may cause its internal fuse to blow. The fuse can be replaced only by a qualified service representative. To avoid this inconvenience and a possible non-warranty repair charge, reduce the playback volume when the system shows obvious signs of stress, i.e. it sounds “raspy,” “fuzzy,” and/ or “muddy.” FPS2000 Digital’s Four-channel Amplifier Specifications Subwoofer: 25 watts RMS. Satellite: 7 watts RMS per channel. These specifications apply to a FPS2000 Digital operating from a 15V DC power adapter.

Recommendation for 4.1 (or 5.1?) speaker setup for desktop environment?

So, about twenty years ago, I bought Cambridge Soundworks FPS2000 Digital Speakers, and they’ve served me… fairly well. My current computer doesn’t have surround out natively, but I got this $17 thing from Amazon, and that seems to Just Work.
However, there’s two big downsides. First, the subwoofer used a proprietary weird connector which does not seem to exist anymore. So I’m using it as 4.0 rather than 4.1 — and powering the subwoofer for no reason, really.
Second, it’s developed a hum. Power line filters (and the external USB audio device) don’t seem to help. The computer itself is pretty loud with fans, so I don’t need absolute silence, but… it’s definitely louder than I’d like.
So, I’m shopping for a replacement. I see this from Logitech, but… eh, those speakers look big and clunky next to the neat 3.25″ cubes of my current system.
Are there other options in the $2-300 price range I should be looking at? Are there ones which will connect to my computer via USB and remove the need for the separate audio adapter (and still Just Work with Fedora Workstation)?
Alternately… can I keep the satellite speakers and just replace the subwoofer (and maybe add a center channel)? That replacement would also need to drive the speakers…
and again it’d be awesome if that connected by USB and served as the sound device too. Does such a thing exist?

It doesn’t come with speakers though. You’d have to buy some separately.
P.S. You’d have to buy powered speakers with that decoder. It doesn’t put out an amplified signal. Another option might be to buy an amplifier with HDMI pass-through if your PC and monitor use HDMI. The latter is what I do and it looks like you can get such an amplifier for around $90.
This is my current surround-sound setup:
surround-sound4032×3024 2.52 MB
The receiver is a Sony STRDH520 (discontinued).
Edit to add – I just noticed that 5.1 sound doesn’t seem to be listed as an option on my HDMI output since the switch to pipewire. The driver still shows support for 5.1 audio (aplay -L
), however, so it might just be that I need to figure out how to configure pipewire properly.

This setup requires a receiver that’s separate from the subwoofer, right? That seems like overkill.

Sound Card Troubleshooting Guide A Sound Card Trouble may result to one or more of the following:.
No sound. Distorted sound. Sound card is not recognized by the computer. Problems with audio devices Here are the following troubleshooting steps to perform in order to resolve an issue with a sound card. Check If Your Sound Card and Speakers are Properly Installed Check the Device Manager and see if your sound device is present. If the driver is not present, you may need to install the latest driver. If the device is present, but there is a yellow question mark (?) or exclamation point (!) before its icon, the device driver may need to be reinstalled.
To access the device manager, simply click on Start, right-click on the My Computer icon, and then select Manage. On the computer management window, select Device Manager to see the list of the devices installed on the computer. To go directly to the Device Manager, just click on Start-Run and then on the text field, type in devmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Test the sound on the control panel. To go there, simply click on Start-Control Panel-Sound. Under the sounds tab, you will have an opportunity to test the functionality of your computer’s sound system. Check your sound devices and see if they are properly selected.
Also check the volume and make sure that the controls are not muted. Don’t forget to check the speakers. Make sure it receives power and that its volume is not set to minimum. Check for Possible Software Problems Media Player – See if the player is working correctly. If possible, use another media player and see if the result is the same.
If you did not encounter the same issue with another media or music player, it is very likely that the problem lies with software. Operating System – A lot of factors in the operating system can affect the performance of your sound card. Try to check if there are important or critical updates for your operating system and install them.
If you feel that your computer system needs a quick repair, consider running System File Checker. To access it, simply click on Start-Run and then type sfc/ scannow. Make sure you have the Windows CD inserted in your CDROM drive.
The system would need it during the process. Also, in the course of your troubleshooting, before proceeding to hardware replacement, consider reinstalling the entire computer system first. Sometimes, it is the operating itself and not the hardware that is causing the problem.
If that is so, replacing the sound card or the motherboard will never resolve the issue. You would only lose your precious savings while the sound trouble still persists. Reinstall the Sound Card Driver If you have already reached this step in troubleshooting, we are then somewhat certain that the issue is more likely a hardware problem rather than a software trouble. Driver issue is the most common cause of sound card problems. Make sure you have the latest version of the driver. It’s usually available at the manufacturer’s website.
To reinstall the sound driver, you will need to uninstall the current driver first. Go to the device manager as described in the first step of this troubleshooting guide. Find the device that represents your sound card driver. Right-click on it and click Uninstall. The uninstallation setup will then show up.
Follow the instructions and restart the computer afterward. To install the latest driver, extract the installation files (they are often available in compressed format), and find the executable file. Run the setup process and restart the computer afterward. If this is your first time to reinstall a device driver, or you are unsure of the steps involved in this procedure, consider to automatically scan your pc and update your sound card drivers.
Reseat the Sound Card To reseat the sound card means to remove it from the system and put it back in. Before touching any internal device installed on the computer, make sure to avoid wearing static-inducing clothing and touch a grounded conductor (metals, etc. ) to dissipate static electricity. Also, always turn off your computer, unplug the cord, and remove the battery (for portables). Consult your manufacturer’s documentation for steps in unseating and reseating the sound card.
If the sound controller is integrated to your computer’s motherboard, skip this step and proceed to the next one. After reseating the sound card, restart the computer and see if the problem is still there. If it persists, proceed to the next step.
Test with Another Sound Card in Good Condition Remove the sound card and install a known-good working sound card. If the problem persists, it is highly possible that the issue is a hardware problem. Either there is a problem with the sound card, or in the sound card slot in the motherboard. Replace the Sound Card If sound card replacement did not resolve the issue, it means that the sound card slot is damaged or no longer functional. A motherboard replacement is necessary to fix the problem. In Windows if you are having any of the follwing errors you may need to update your sound card drivers:. You do not hear sound from the computer’s speakers or headphones.

Introduction Ever since Creative Labs merged with Henry Kloss’ Cambridge Sound System to manufacture PC speakers, they have since been releasing more powerful speakers for the PC. Their initial releases (e.g. SBS 20) were never the type of speakers that games and music enthusiasts wanted.
When PC works first came out, people generally compared it with Altec Lansing ACS45/44 series. Many would agree the Bass was pretty good but sound was too low and the ACS45 was still the preferred choice to many. The Four Point Surround Sound System was generally a cheap gimmick, which many never actually fell for and Creative probably felt the pinch and seriously needed something to kick off their four-speaker configuration. The other 2 speaker the MicroWorks and SoundWorks were only 2 speaker 1 Subwoofer configuration, both were excellent speakers, especially the MicroWorks but never really found a niche in the gaming/home user world.
The Desktop Theater 5.1 had some pretty good features like AC3 support but most of its speaker/sub came from the PC works family and therefore was not in a class of its own even though the price was otherwise. This time round Creative came out with something pretty outstanding if I should say so myself. THE Four Point Surround Sound 2000 Digital.
I would generally say this is THE set of speaker to pair up with the Sound Blaster Live. It is a digital speaker that accepts signals from a 9 pin digital DIN (not AC3 SPDIF cable) from the digital I/O card. (Finally got to use the Digital card from my SBLive. Whew no waste). However, if you are using the SBLive Value, Monster Sound MX300 or even a 16Bit sound card, you may still use the analog inputs on the FPS 2000. If your sound card supports 4 speaker configuration, that’s great, but however if it does not, well not to worry as the FPS 2000 will split the signal from the front to rear, meaning you’ll have 2 left and 2 right speakers. The satellite speaker from the FPS2000 are fantastic, they are the same type of speakers the Desktop Theater 5.1 used for the front.
The PC Works, FPS 1000 and the Desktop Theater 5.1 uses even smaller satellite speaker. As for the Subwoofer, the FPS 2000 comes with a pretty big Subwoofer at 14′ driving at 25 watts compared to the others driving at only 8 — 10 watts. Obviously the FPS 2000 is technically more powerful than the others (with exception to the MicroWorks). Another cool thing about it is that it’s Black in color and not the Plain-Jane white we see so often. Anyway so much for its physical appearance.
Let’s see how this baby rocks. The Good Features & Benefits FourPointSurround FPS2000 Digital consists of four 3′-wide satellite speaker cubes, plus a compact, floor-standing subwoofer cabinet. The four compact satellites create realistic four-channel positional audio while the subwoofer can be positioned on the floor — behind your TV, under your desk, or behind furnitures, out of the way, for best bass response.
Possible placement solutions would be A — Placing the rear speakers on the left and right side of the wall. B — Placing the rear speakers behind the user C — Placing the rear speaker at the edge of a wide table while front speaker next to the monitor D — Place the rear speaker below the table top at each side Note: The satellite speakers are magnetically shielded so it will not cause any interference with other electronic device e.g. However, the Sub Woofer is not and it is advisable to place it further away from other electronic devices, to prevent magnetic interference. The FourPointSurround FPS2000 Digital system delivers a carefully fine-tuned stereo sound system, usually produced by expensive home surround stereo systems. It is best suited for the computer PC environment with a small surrounding. 2 top areas where these speakers really impressed me were in the games and movie testing.
They not only sounded good, they actually sound life like. I ran up a few movies to check out the quality of the speaker.
Running the take off scene from Top Gun sounded superb. I jack the volume all the way to 100% and there was simply no distortion and the quality of the sound was still sharp, clear and crisp. (Note the max volume out of my DVD/VCD encoder card was set at 86% though).
Explosions and other sound effects were just as good. The sound driven out from the satellite speaker was very impressive. The Sub Woofer was pretty strong too; anyone within a 5m radius can probably feel the impact coming from the woofer. The sound got even better when I ran my DVD movies. It was exceptionally clear, crisp and sharp. Many would say that AC3 support should be added in, but to me it is quite redundant. AC3/THX sound system are great when played for a large audience in a large theater, but when you are in a room by yourself or with a couple of friends, such a system is unnoticeable.
Since the FPS200 was meant for a small enclosed area, it need not provide such feature. Allowing the SBLive Liveware 2. 0 to set the environment will be more than adequate. I tested the FPS2000 playing Unreal with EAX enable. Unreal is probably one of the best games for testing out your speakers as it sports a lot of features. While playing the game, I deliberately lower the background music to concentrate more on the movement sound. The life likeness of the sound was probably due to my SBLive but the fact that the FPS2000 was able to deliver top clarity audio really impressed me. Each footstep and movement felt like they were coming from different directions and one could easily know where it is coming from.
The rear speaker actually added more atmosphere to the game than ever before. Previously, I was using a Pioneer Dolby Digital Home Entertainment Sound System with a 5 set Philip speaker system along with a Yamaha 25-Watt Sub Woofer. Even though this setup costs more than $800, it was unable to deliver such realism to the game ambience which the FPS200 could. In Need For Speed 3, the engines and screeching sound from the tires were easily heard and the direction of the sound was easily identifiable. The FPS 2000 with a SBLive card and a game that supports EAX is truly wonderful. Aureal could probably gang up with Altec Lansing to give Creative a run for its money but for now I can certainly say that this is the best 3D Sound Solution currently available.
Take advantage of the clear, distortion-free audio by connecting the Digital DIN output of your FourPointSurround FPS2000 Digital speakers to the Sound Blaster Live! Digital I/O card.
Just follow these simple steps to unleash the full effect of your digital speakers: 1. Insert one end of the SPDIF cable into the DIGITAL DIN output jack on the Sound Blaster Live! Digital I/O card. The Digital DIN connector is the only connector with the 9-pin configuration. Note: The actual position of the Digital I/O card may differ slightly from this diagram 2.
Insert the other end of the SPDIF cable into the DIGITAL DIN input on the subwoofer. Complete the following steps:. Position your mouse at the top of your screen to activate Creative’s Sound Blaster Live!. Launcher Select ‘Audio HQ’ On the Configuration tabbed page, select the option ‘4 Speakers’.
A sofa icon (representing you) appears in the center of the ‘Preview Box’, with four speakers at the corners of the box. You are now ready to experience 3D digital audio like never before. Note: FourPointSurround FPS2000 Digital will detect the presence of a plug connected to the DIGITAL DIN input and give the DIGITAL DIN input priority. Any signal present at the AUDIO INPUT will be ignored. Be sure to remove the plug from the DIGITAL DIN INPUT if you wish to listen to a sound source through the analog AUDIO INPUT. The Sub woofer is pretty big compared to other sub-woofers from Creative. It is made of Solid wood.
This is great as the resonance that the wood produces is very warm and one actually feels it rather than hears it. Plastic generally generates vibration, which sound very cheap.
If you’d notice the yellow label on the sub woofer, it is a heat hazard warning. There are heat sinks for the speakers but running them at about 85% — 75% loud for more than 4 hours playing Star Wars the heat generated was so low that I did not even notice. (Note: The room was Air Conditioned at 23 degree Celsius) The position of the sub woofer was below my table just behind a wall. It is important to note where to position the sub woofer so as to achieve optimal sound. In fact, incorrect placement can lead to annoying sound. I once saw a joker place the sub woofer of his ACS45 on the top shelf of his Sitoca computer table, he kept complaining of headaches.
Thank God Sitoca builds solid table or his table would be shaking every time there is sound. Anyway, I quickly placed it on the floor for him and he immediately heard the difference. A good position to place the sub woofer is on the floor with nothing beneath it and its behind facing a solid wall. The wall will provide a reflecting effect that really enhances the feel of the bass.
Do not crowd anything around the speaker, as this would affect the sound. Above is the external volume controller where you can adjust the balance for the Front and Rear speakers. This is pretty useful if your speakers are situated too far apart.
Many people will face the problem of not being able to place the rear speakers closer than they want to. Now, all you have to do is adjust the balance more to the rear to accommodate for the lost sound. The Bad Well I can’t think of many bad things about this set of speaker. Real good in fact. However there are a couple of things I’d like to mention is that the speakers are meant for PCs inside a room. They don’t sound that great in a large open area. When I was at A-Zone and heard the display set I was not that impressed with it, as the surrounding area was pretty huge.
However, after bringing it home, man, did my impression change. However, I’d like to note that the even though the Sub Woofer was about 1.5 times more powerful than the PC Works, FPS 1000 and the Desktop 5.1, it could have been better.
Cambridge Soundworks Fps 2000 Digital Drivers Download
I feel that at times the feeling is not strong enough unless you adjust the Sub-Woofer volume. Ah yes, not to mention the volume control for the sub woofer volume control is located at the side of the Woofer where all the cables are connected too. It is a real pain in the butt (actually pain in the head) as I kept hitting my head on the table top to reach the control. They should have place the volume control on the remote volume control stick too.
Overall, most would find that the sub woofer would be more than sufficient. Another thing that disappointed me was the lack of an equalizer control. The Desktop 5.1 had some pretty nifty external box controls while the FPS 2000 had only a volume and Front/Rear balance control. It would be great if Creative could add a Treble, Bass and other controls to the external controller. Conclusion This is really a good set of speakers for the PC, if not one of the finest. It carries good sound and provide good warm bass while still maintaining the quality and clarity of the output.
It’s fantastic for games and watching movies off your PC in a room. For the price of slightly over $300, it is well worth every cent spent. If you have the budget for it then go for it especially if you own the Sound Blaster Live.

We have already reviewed various computer acoustics manufactured by Cambridge Soundworks, acquired by Creative Technology several years ago and sold under the Creative brand.
As always, in a large and colorful foam box, four small satellite tweeters and a rather massive subwoofer were found. Once again, it is worth noting the concern for the user, because. the kit consists not only of speakers, but also contains many useful little things.
Creative SoundWorks FPS2000 Digital Specifications
Speaker arrangement and connection Structurally, the FPS2000 is made the same as the previously reviewed FPS1000, all speakers are connected to a subwoofer containing a built-in amplifier. The satellites are absolutely identical to the DTT2500 satellites, they have a power of 7 watts, the diameter of the speakers is 2.
The volume control is located on the cord coming from the subwoofer. In addition to adjusting the volume, it contains a balance control between the front and rear satellites and can turn the system off and on, and it also contains a system power indicator. This is very convenient, because The regulator can be attached to a table or monitor, keyboard or any other convenient place, so that it is always «at hand». The satellites are magnetically shielded from the speakers so they can be positioned
All signals go to the subwoofer amplifier and then go to the satellites. The amplifier and satellite speakers contain spring clips, just like in expensive acoustics. The wires are quite thick, with a cross section of about 1.5 sq. mm. After connecting all the wires, the subwoofer looks like this …
When placing more than two speakers, a problem arises — how to place all the speakers, where to attach them, so that there is the same distance from the speakers to the listener, and also so that the wires do not interfere. The speaker manufacturer recommends four placement options.
All necessary items are included for fixing: table stands, Velcro for fastening under the tabletop, tripods for rear speakers and even screws with plugs and instructions for attaching to the walls. I chose the last option «d», Testing
Testing took place under the following conditions:
I always start testing speakers by listening to my favorite songs in MP3 format and on CD-audio. The sound produced by the FPS2000 is very pleasant, and although the speakers are plastic, there is absolutely no plastic shade in the sound, the subwoofer is capable of The sound is also good in games, with powerful bass shaking, and four satellites to increase the orientation of the sound around the listener. It was a pleasure to play games with EAX support — Unreal, Half-Life, F.A.K.K.2, MDK2 received a natural sound picture, rich in various clear and natural sounds. The powerful subwoofer reproduces the hum of the wind in open spaces in Unreal and F.A.K.K.2 and the hum of electronics in MDK2 well. When watching DVD movies with Dolby Digital audio decoding software, the system creates a pretty decent sound picture, but, of course, it does not reach the sound of the DTT2500. Lack of a central channel It is worth noting one feature that is missing from the FPS1000. When the system is connected to a two-channel sound card that does not have a rear output, four speakers will still play, because. Digital audio The advantage of this system is that it can be connected digitally. What does it give? First of all, the use of a digital interface between the sound card and the speaker system allows you to reduce the noise level compared to There is an alternative way to get digital sound, this is using a USB clone containing its own DAC. The use of such speakers eliminates the need for a sound card, but there are a few caveats. The USB bus is processor dependent and when the processor is heavily loaded, the sound is interrupted. Those who use a USB mouse have probably noticed discontinuity in the movement of the cursor after opening / closing the CD-ROM tray, it will also be with the sound on USB speakers. Pins
