Case Overview Thermaltake Soprano
Products bearing the Thermaltake trademark are well known and quite popular. Among people who are actively interested in computer topics, it is quite difficult to find indifferent to the products of this company. However, this fact does not only mean a positive attitude towards Thermaltake, on the contrary, the confrontation between fans and opponents of this brand can be found very often in various computer forums.
So, let’s look at another device from this company — the Thermaltake Soprano case.
Packaging and scope of delivery
The box is made of cardboard of sufficient thickness and has a glossy finish on the outside. It depicts, in fact, the case itself and lists some of its design features. There are foam inserts inside the box, the body itself was wrapped in white packaging material, very similar to the covering material used by gardeners :)…

all devices and components have instructions in Russian, but in this case this should not cause problems, since all the steps, from opening the side panel to connecting the front connectors, are illustrated in sufficient detail.
Chassis Overview
The Thermaltake Soprano is a medium-sized miditower with 4 bays for 5.
25″ devices and 7 bays for 3.5″ devices, including two with external access, also capable of mounting 7 expansion cards. The case walls are made of 0.6 mm thick steel, it is designed for screwless installation of components and peripherals (except for the motherboard).
The case has a light gray mirror finish that looks more matte than glossy. Noticeable stains from the hands on the case practically do not remain. To remove dirt from the surface, a «specially trained» napkin made of velvety material is attached to the body, as they say, a trifle, but nice. The design of the decorative door that closes the front panel is made in the «wave» style, however, the general view is slightly spoiled by the voluminous silver molding located just below the middle. Although everything related to design and taste is very individual, and it is not surprising if someone likes this option very much.
Torsional rigidity of the door is moderate, but no more. The power and reset buttons are located on the front panel, to access them you need to open the decorative door.
Their diameter is 20mm and 8mm respectively. The indicators are located on the front wall of the chassis, and small transparent inserts are provided on the front panel and in the decorative door. The torsional rigidity of the front panel is far from ideal. In its lower part, several slots are made for unhindered air flow to the front fan; in this place, an air filter in the form of a plastic mesh on the frame is installed on the inside of the front panel. Of course, the use of a filter in this case is very commendable, even considering that it does not belong to the budget category at all. However, the design features of the hinged plastic elements, consisting in the presence of a hole in the lower part of the front panel (from the side of the floor) measuring 115 by 15 mm, located between the front wall of the chassis and the air filter, as well as the complete absence of ventilation holes in the decorative cover, allow air flow, bypassing the filter. Also, the design features of the front panel include the presence of a lock that fixes both the decorative cover and, directly, the front panel.
So, when the key is turned in the lock from the closed position by 90 degrees, only the cover is unlocked, and when the key is turned 180 degrees, both the decorative cover and the front panel are unlocked. After fully unlocking and opening, they can be removed completely by lifting slightly and pulling them out of the hinges. Buyers of this case would like to wish never to lose the keys to the front panel, otherwise access to the external compartments will be difficult. In fact, this option for fixing the front panel is quite convenient if it were not for the key, or rather the possibility of losing it with all the consequences … Instead of a lock with a key, a circular selector could be used, which, on the one hand, would not worsen convenience, but on the other hand, it would save from manipulations with the key and problems in case of its loss.
A transparent plastic window measuring 39 by 37.5 cm is installed in the right wall of the case; its fastening is made on plastic pins and allows you to dismantle it without any problems.
From the inside, a 92 mm fan is screwed to the window, complete with a fine metal mesh, which performs both a protective function and a filter function.
The 120 mm rear case fan fastener is quite standard and is a plastic element with two hooks — on top and bottom of the fan. This design is convenient and does not cause any complaints. The front fan is fixed with screws.
The front and rear air vents are stamped, and very original — in the form of hexagons with a side length of about 4 mm. I would like to note that this is far from their best option, especially for a case of this price category, at least the holes could be made larger, and the goal is to reduce airflow resistance and, as a result, reduce noise.
The basket for installing hard drives is made non-removable; In the horizontal plane, the play is minimal, and in the vertical plane, the play is already noticeable. Mounting with standard screws is also possible in theory, however, the mismatch of the hole (there is only one) on the left wall of the basket and the hard drive case is a little embarrassing.
Expansion card mounting, also screwless.
Optical drives, like any other device installed in a 5.25″ bay, are mounted using plastic sleds that are inserted into the bottom pair of holes on each side of the device case using two plastic pins, the location of which is individual for the left and right planks. Fastening with screws is not possible in this case. The fixation of the drive is quite reliable, in the vertical plane there is no play at all, but in the horizontal one there is still a small play.
To install devices in external 3.5″ and 5.25″ bays, the metal plugs must be broken off or bent back; unfortunately, they are not screwed.
External communication connectors, since this time it will not be correct to call them frontal, are located approximately in the middle of the top cover of the case, which is not always convenient, especially if the case is under the table or in a niche. Their set, in general, is standard and includes:
- 2 USB
- 1 Firewire
- 2 Minijack (audio)
The orientation of the connectors is strictly vertical, which is not always convenient, especially if the computer is installed under a table or in a niche.
The connectors are protected by a spring-loaded plastic cap.
The right side cover of the case is fastened with two knurled screws, and there are also two fairly convenient plastic latches that allow you to install and remove the wall without screwing it on, which is very convenient in the process of assembling a computer. The only thing that can be reproached for is the number of latches, 🙂 it’s hard to argue with the fact that one latch would be more convenient than two.
A lock is integrated into the upper latch housing to block the wall in the closed state, and the keys to it and the lock that fixes the front panel are different, so that the housing is supplied with two sets of keys fixed for transportation on the rear panel.
The left wall is fixed with conventional Phillips head screws.
Chassis comes with pre-installed fans:
- 120mm — Hong Sheng A 1225L12S rated at 1800 rpm and maximum current consumption 0.30A — 2 pieces
- 92 mm — Hong Sheng A 9225L12S with a maximum current consumption of 0.

The legs of the case are equipped with a swivel mechanism that locks when changing position every 45 degrees. In the unfolded state, they are not prone to self-folding or any movement, that is, the fixation of the legs is quite reliable.
The internal structure of the case and the chassis as a whole is very similar to one of the HEC cases tested by our laboratory earlier.
After the description, let’s move on to testing the case.
Testing the ergonomic characteristics of the case ventilation system
For the first stage, we don’t need either a motherboard, or a processor, and in general, we won’t need any accessories, except for those already installed in the case. So, the purpose of the first test is to determine the noise level from the case ventilation system, which consists of three case fans, as well as two fans in the power supply. After connecting the fans to the power supply connectors, setting the jumper on the ATX connector and connecting the AC power cable, turn on the system using the switch on the PSU.
The noise from the ventilation system is felt in a quiet room in which all electrical appliances have been turned off, and even the air conditioner. When the front panel is closed, the noise spectrum is mid-low frequency with a small high-frequency component, which is not focused on. However, if the front panel is opened, the high-frequency noise component becomes quite noticeable. This is a merit exclusively of 120 mm fans, 9The 2mm fan, also running at about 1800rpm, is virtually silent, aside from the rustling of the airflow. In an office environment, the noise from the cooling system is almost unnoticeable.
After testing in nominal mode, we switch to quiet mode with a reduced fan speed achieved by connecting them to a voltage of 5V instead of the nominal 12V. It is worth noting that not all fans are capable of operating in this mode, and in this case there were problems with starting the rear 120 mm fan, with the front fan, although it is exactly the same model.
The noise from the cooling system has significantly decreased, and now with the front panel closed it has become barely noticeable, the noise from the PSU fans has become more or less noticeable, but in this mode it is very weak.
Assembly of the system unit
Installation of the system board is carried out using standard hollow hexagons, inside of which a thread is cut, where a screw is screwed after the board is installed. The rear I/O panel is fixed with screws and can be quickly removed without any extra effort. In general, this operation did not cause problems, the holes for the hexagons are located correctly, there are no complaints about the quality of the thread, both in these holes and in the hexagons themselves.
Expansion boards in this enclosure can be installed both on a screwless mounting using a snap-on bracket, and with screws by removing the bracket, which is fixed with two ordinary screws. In our case, we used a screwless option for attaching expansion cards, in the role of which we played a video card. However, a screwdriver was still needed to remove the plug, since it was not possible to remove it only with the help of hands, despite the fact that their design provides for removal, and not breaking out.
After that, the video card took its rightful place in the slot and was secured with a plastic latch, which is fixed not only in the closed position, but also in the fully open position. With a screwless mount, a small backlash of the video card was noted, which, of course, was absent with the classic variant of the mount. From time to time, the latches are knocked out of the mounting slots, as a result of which the expansion card cannot be installed the first time, but this situation does not occur often.
Installation of devices in compartments with external access without a screwdriver is almost impossible, since the plastic plugs on the front panel are fastened with screws. There were no problems with the optical drive, it was installed using a sled, but the installation of the drive caused certain inconveniences associated with the design of the corresponding compartment inside the case, the fastening was done using a plastic clamping bar. It should be noted that often, for the normal fixation of devices in 3.
5-inch bays, a significant clamping force of the bar is required, and, in general, turning the stopper, too …
Installing hard drives in the first internal bay (the third from the top, if you count the first two external ones) can be difficult due to the location of the processor cooler, and in the second and third installed «long» video card. Disks are installed in the lower bays easily and naturally, again, if there are no long PCI cards in the system, but these days it is almost a museum rarity.
The ease of dismantling the power supply unit is low even in an empty case, since by unscrewing, pulling it out, sliding it to the side, the upper support frame designed to stop the cover does not allow «towards you», and if it were literally a centimeter higher, the block would pass without problems. Next, we try to move it towards the front panel and rest against the casing of the external communication connectors, but you can pull out the block in this way, for which you need to turn it at an angle and make a few extra gestures.
In a word, uncomfortable.
Connecting external USB ports is not a problem, because the wires coming from them end in «human» connectors, not a type of fluff. With FIrewire connectors, the situation is reversed — we have many bundles of wires, each of which ends in an individual connector, with audio connectors the situation is exactly the same, except that there are fewer wires. The wires going to each connector (or a pair of connectors in the case of sound) are removed in a common braid.
The situation with the quality of the edges of metal structural elements is quite good — there are no burrs and chips, although there are several places where, under unfortunate circumstances, you can injure yourself during assembly. These include, first of all, the joint of the baskets for 3.5 and 5.25 inch devices and the space inside the basket for 3.5 inch devices. The quality of the processing of the inner side of the lower stop for the right side cover also raises certain complaints.
Testing the system unit using software applications
The last stage is testing using software tools that heavily load various computer subsystems, which, in turn, causes a fairly powerful heat dissipation inside the case. Accordingly, you can evaluate the capabilities and performance of the cooling system of the case. For this stage,
- FarCry will be used — testing at various levels for an hour, resolution 1024 by 768
- ATI Tool — 3D View test for one hour
Test bench configuration:

hard drive in a minute. The motherboard also allows you to set the moment the fan switches to maximum speed, in this case it was set to 60 degrees, after which the fan starts to rotate at the nominal speed.
The cooling system performs well at both nominal and reduced fan speeds.
At the same time, their noise in quiet mode, when powered by 5V, is significantly lower.
Results
What can be said good about this case? Sufficiently high-quality exterior finish, good workmanship, efficient, but noisy in nominal mode, ventilation system. The disadvantages include design flaws associated with screwless mounting of devices, the fixed design of the hard drive cage, the original front panel locking scheme, rather, can also be attributed to the disadvantages than to the advantages of this case. In general, nothing special from a number of cases with a price of up to 70 USD. This example has not been shown.
This case will fit well into an office interior, however, it is better to choose a complete set without a plastic window — this way the case looks more strictly.
In general, the attempt to make a high-end product based on the economy-class chassis was not very successful.
