At the start of our iPhone 4S battery life analysis I mentioned that I wasn’t happy with the current state of our battery life benchmarks. The first incarnation of our smartphone battery life suite was actually a port of what I created to test battery life on Mac notebooks years ago. The Mac suite has evolved over time, and we’ve made similar evolutions to the smartphone suite — just on a less aggressive pace. The data on the previous page showed just how good Apple is at driving down idle power consumption, and through some software optimization it got very good at winning in our battery life tests. The data was accurate, but stopped being representative of reality.

Going into the iPhone 5 review I knew we needed to change the suite. After testing a number of options (and using about 16.5GB of cellular data in the process) we ended up on an evolution of the battery life test we deployed last year for our new tablet suite. The premise is the same: we regularly load web pages at a fixed interval until the battery dies (all displays are calibrated to 200 nits as always). The differences between this test and our previous one boil down to the amount of network activity and CPU load.

On the network side, we’ve done a lot more to prevent aggressive browser caching of our web pages. Some caching is important otherwise you end up with a baseband test, but it’s clear what we had previously wasn’t working. Brian made sure that despite the increased network load, the baseband still had the opportunity to enter its idle state during the course of the benchmark.

We also increased CPU workload along two vectors: we decreased pause time between web page loads and we shifted to full desktop web pages, some of which are very js heavy. The end result is a CPU usage profile that mimics constant, heavy usage beyond just web browsing. Everything you do on your smartphone ends up causing CPU usage peaks — opening applications, navigating around the OS and of course using apps themselves. Our 5th generation web browsing battery life test should map well to more types of smartphone usage, not just idle content consumption of data from web pages.

As always we test across multiple air interfaces (3G, 4G LTE, WiFi), but due to the increased network load we actually find that on a given process technology we see an increase in battery life on faster network connections. The why is quite simple to understand: the faster a page is able to fully render, the quicker all components can drive down to their idle power states.

The downside to starting with a new battery life test is that we don’t have a wealth of older data to compare to. I did my best to run whatever we had access to at the time, but there simply aren’t that many devices in these charts compared to our older ones. The data below may not look like a lot, but it’s the result of running over 300 hours of battery life tests to not only understand how these devices do under load but also to find out the best test to use as the cornerstone of our new suite.

We’ll start the investigation on WiFi. Where supported we used 5GHz 802.11n, otherwise 2.4GHz:

The iPhone 5 manages to match Apple’s estimates, just breaking the 10 hour barrier. HTC’s One X based on the Snapdragon S4 comes very close however. Although the One X is equipped with a larger battery, it also has a bigger screen and slightly more power hungry SoC to feed as well.

The iPhone 4S is measurably worse here. Keep in mind that the workload between all of the devices here is constant, if you use the faster performance on the iPhone 5 to browse more web pages or use your apps quicker then you may not see an improvement here. Worst case, you may even see a regression in battery life. That’s the downside to this increased dynamic range in power consumption that we’ve been getting for two generations now.

Although this isn’t the place for an Intel/Qualcomm comparison, it is important to note that the Atom Z2460 based RAZR i manages to last 17% longer on a single charge than the nearly identical, but Qualcomm S4 based RAZR M.

Next let’s look at battery life when we switch to the cellular networks:

The non-LTE phones see a sharp drop in battery life. At least at 28nm the slower air interfaces simply have to remain active (and drawing power) for longer, which results in measurably worse battery life. Again, the thing to be careful of here is there’s usually a correlation between network speed and how aggressive you use the device. With a workload that scaled with network speed you might see closer numbers between 3G and 4G LTE.

HTC’s One X continues to do very well on LTE, coming the closest to the iPhone 5. I believe what we’re seeing here is really Apple’s idle power management building up a small but tangible advantage.

On 3G the iPhone 5 actually dies slightly quicker than the iPhone 4S, although run to run variance can cause the two to flip around in standings. Our iPhone 4 datapoint featured an older battery (both the 4S and 5 batteries were < 30 days old) so it’s unclear how a brand new 4 would compare.

The RAZR i does quite well here on 3G. Despite being on a slower network, Intel’s platform appears to do a good job of aggressively pushing down to idle. Once again Intel maintains about a 19% battery life advantage over the S4 based RAZR M. The RAZR i and the HTC One X do better than the iPhone 5 on 3G, which supports our theory of idle power consumption being a big reason the iPhone 5 does so well on faster networks.

While our new web browsing battery life tests do a good job of showing the impact of network, display and CPU on battery life, they do little to stress the GPU. Thankfully our friends at Kishonti gave us a shiny new tool to use: GLBenchmark 2.5.1 features a GPU rundown battery life test. The standard tests run Egypt and Egypt HD indefinitely until the battery life dies. We standardized on using Egypt HD at the device’s native resolution with a 30 fps cap. All of the displays were calibrated to 200 nits as usual.

Here the iPhone 4S has a tangible advantage in battery life over the 5. The move to 32nm can only do so much, with many more transistors switching at a higher frequency the A6 SoC ends up drawing tangibly more power than the A5 in the iPhone 4S and delivers a shorter run on battery. The gap isn’t huge (the 5 delivers 92% of the battery life of the 4S), but it’s still a regression. The iPhone 5 does comparatively quite well here, despite being faster it’s able to outlast the S4 and Tegra 3 based devices. The explanation is rather simple: capped to only 30 fps the iPhone 5’s GPU likely has the ability to drop down to an idle state for a brief period in between rendering frames. The other devices can’t hit 30 fps in this test and as a result have to run at full tilt throughout the entire benchmark. The RAZR i is the only exception to the rule, but it is considerably slower than everything else here (averaging below 8 fps) which could explain the very high result.

Moving on we have our WiFi hotspot test, which measures how long the device can last acting as a hotspot for a wirelessly tethered notebook. Our wireless hotspot test is entirely network bound by its definition. Here I’m including two sets of results, our most up to date LTE hotspot battery life tests as well as the chart we included in our latest iPad review. In both cases the iPhone 5 does relatively well, lasting just over 5 hours as an LTE hotspot on a single charge. In these tests, devices with significantly larger batteries come in very handy.

Our final battery life test is our standard call time test. In this test we’re playing audio through two phones (one of which is the phone being tested) and measure the call time until the battery is completely drained. The display is turned off, simulating an actual call.

The iPhone 5 falls just short of the 4S in our call time test. There’s really no major improvement here as far as we can tell, although it’s not clear how much additional work the iPhone 5 is doing with its additional noise cancelling features. If talk time is of the utmost importance to you, you’ll want to look at some of the phones with much larger batteries. The Droid RAZR MAXX remains the king of the hill as far as talk time is concerned.

Battery Life Conclusions

If we take a step back and look at the collection of results from our battery life tests, the iPhone 5 can last anywhere between 3.15 and 10.27 hours on a single charge. Do a lot of continuous data transfers and you’ll see closer to 5 hours, but if you’ve got reasonably periodic idle time you can expect something in the 8 — 10 hour range. In short, if you use your device a lot, don’t be too surprised to see it lose about 10 — 15% of its battery life for every hour of use.

Now the question is how does the iPhone 5 compare to other devices? Compared to previous iPhones, the 5 has the ability to use a lot more power. If you’re doing the exact same, finite length CPU/network intensive task on the iPhone 5 and any previous iPhone, chances are that the iPhone 5 will be able to complete the task and get to sleep quicker — thus giving you a better overall energy usage profile. Where things get complicated is if you use the faster CPU, GPU and network connectivity to increase your usage of the device. In that case you could see no improvement or even a regression in battery life.

Compared to other modern platforms the iPhone 5 should be competitive in day to day power usage, even compared to devices with somewhat larger batteries (~7Wh). The trick to all of this of course is whatever performance advantage that the iPhone 5 has coupled with lower idle power. Being able to complete tasks quicker and/or drop to aggressively low idle power states are really the only secret to the iPhone’s battery life.

I feel like the days of ever increasing smartphone battery life are behind us. Instead what we’ll likely see going forward is continued increase in dynamic range. Battery life could be better or worse and it’ll likely depend heavily on your workload. Much like how we saw notebooks cluster around the same 2 — 5 hour battery life for years, I suspect we’ll see something similar here with smartphones. The major difference this time around is the burden of a really large battery isn’t as big as it is in a notebook. The RAZR MAXX is the perfect example of a still very portable smartphone that comes equipped with a huge (by today’s standards) battery.

This is how long your iPhone battery should last between charges

After the debut of the iPhone in 2007, the developers at Apple worked hard to make their products stand out from the competition by introducing sleeker designs, clearer screens and more powerful capabilities. Clearly, it was a successful mission; since that initial release, the company has debuted 21 iPhone models with popular, impressive features like Siri and fingerprint sensors. But each new addition has come at a cost — the need for increasingly stronger batteries, so that the amount of time iPhones can go without charging isn’t mere minutes thanks to all those exciting but battery-depleting new features.

Battery drain, unfortunately, is a common problem for iPhone users, and if your phone is always running low despite your best charging efforts, you might need to take it to an Apple Store for repairs or a replacement. Before doing that, though, compare your device’s battery levels with the average charge lifespan for different iPhones under regular usage, to see if your phone is truly draining way faster than normal. Of course, if you’ve been using one of the older models for a number of years now and are seeing decreased battery life, that might just be normal wear and tear, so keep that in mind when comparing your battery life to the averages below.

iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s

Average battery life: Around 5 to 11 hours for both phones.

Released in 2012, the iPhone 5 featured a 1440 mAh battery, and Apple claimed a single charge on this device could last up to 225 hours if the phone wasn’t in heavy use. But Engadget reported the iPhone 5 lasting just a little over 11 hours during its tests, while AnandTech’s tests showed closer to an average of just five hours per charge, with the phone losing 10% to 15% of its charge each hour. Many users experienced similar results or malfunctioning batteries, and to this day, some people still lament the iPhone 5’s short battery life.

The iPhone 5s has a bigger battery at 1560 mAh, but it still showed only slight improvements compared to the 5. Tech Radar did not find a single charge lasting the 10 hours Apple claimed the phone would when in regular use.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s

Average battery life: About 7 to 14 hours for both phones.

In 2014, Apple introduced a 1810 mAh battery for the iPhone 6. Tom’s Guide found that the phone only lasted 7 hours and 25 minutes with continuous use, but at Trusted Reviews, tester Evan Kypreos had better results: his iPhone 6 lasted 14 hours when in heavy usage (at 50% brightness), and up to 35 hours when not being used at all.

The iPhone 6s fared worse, due to its smaller, 1715 mAH battery. Although it seemed to be a downgrade, Engadget stated the smaller battery was to make room for the new 3D Touch hardware on this model. Apple claimed the 6s was more energy efficient and would offer the same battery life as the 6, but Trusted Reviews did not find that to be the case, reporting the 6s having 5% less battery capacity than the 6.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Average battery life: About 10 to 12 hours for both phones.

2016’s iPhone 7 came without a headphone jack, in order to make room for better cameras and a bigger battery, according to The Verge. Indeed, the batteries for both models were impressive: the iPhone 7 had an 1960 mAh battery, while the 7 Plus had a 2900 mAh battery. According to Apple, the greater size was meant to increase the 7’s charge time by two hours from the 6s.

In tests, The Verge found the iPhone 7 lasting about 10 hours, and the 7 Plus lasting 12 hours, when in medium usage. Tech Radar’s testing found the iPhone 7 barely making it through a day, and overall lasting just seven minutes more than the 6s. The site’s review of the iPhone 7 Plus was more positive, though, with the phone apparently lasting a full day of heavy usage.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Average battery life: About 13 hours for both phones.

In 2017, Apple released the iPhone 8 with a 1821 mAh battery, noticeably smaller than the iPhone 7’s and bad news for anyone who wasn’t impressed by that phone’s battery life. Tech Radar noted that the iPhone 8’s battery life only lasted about 13 hours of regular use, and Trusted Reviews received a similar result during its tests, only getting an iPhone 8 to live through the day by constantly changing settings and adjusting the screen brightness.

The iPhone 8 Plus also had a smaller battery than the 7 Plus, with a capacity of 2675 mAh. Trusted Reviews did not see the battery life on this model change much from either the 7 Plus or the 8, but noted the 8 Plus did not require constant adjustments to last the day.

iPhone X, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR

Average battery life: About 10 to 17 hours for all phones.

The iPhone X, out in 2017, contained a 2716 mAh battery that Apple claimed would allow the phone to last two hours longer than the 7. Trusted Reviews found this to be true, praising the fact that the phone won’t hit “red” before the workday ends after regular use. Tech Radar managed to run the phone down after 12 hours of heavy use, concluding that while the iPhone X’s battery life “isn’t mind-blowing, it’s certainly better than some iPhones of old — it’s more than acceptable.” Tom’s Guide found significantly less impressive results from their rigorous testing, with the X’s battery lasting just short of 10 hours.

The XS Max (released in 2018) fared no better with its larger, 3174 mAh battery lasting only 10 hours and 38 minutes. However, Trusted Reviews kept the XS Max lasting throughout the day after normal, heavy usage, and Tech Radar had a similar conclusion, stating that the phone lasted on a single, full charge from 7 a.m. to midnight with moderate to heavy use.

2018’s iPhone XR impressed Tech Radar, who declared this model to have “the best battery life of any phone from [Apple].” Coming into the X series with a 2942 mAh battery, smaller than the XS, the phone’s energy efficiency kept it from burning too much battery life all at once. Tech Radar managed to keep an iPhone XR going from 5:30 a.m/ to 11:00 p.m. with still some charge left to spare.

Apple continues to develop and improve its iPhones each year, but as more features requiring extra energy and hardware space get added to each new model, battery life will remain a concern. The company has taken steps in the right direction with models such as the XR, and it’ll hopefully only improve from there.

In 2018, Apple launched iOS 11.3 software update that lets the user gain more insight into the health of their iPhone’s battery. This way, they can see if the battery is the issue that is affecting the performance of their phone. So, if you have an iPhone 6, you will get the Beta version of Battery Health, and if you have iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, iPhone 7Plus, iPhone 8 or iPhone 8Plus means you are running on the current version of iOS 13 and will get this option under Settings > Battery.

Before you tap on “Battery Health” to check the percentage health, it will be useful to check if there is “Service” mentioned next to Battery Health.

This means that your iPhone battery will not support Peak Performance, and it needs immediate replacement. It will also lead to an unexpected shut down of your iPhone, numerous apps will hang, and multitasking will be a challenge.

 

The message will also give you the option to contact Apple Authorized Service Center for your iPhone 6S, 7, 7 Plus, 8 or iPhone 8 Plus battery replacement. Still, you can contact any Independent Service Provider to replace a genuine iPhone battery.

When your iPhone is brand new, you will see the “Maximum Capacity” as 100% by tapping on the Battery Health option.

How To Fix Apple iPhone 5S Battery Dies So Fast Issue

The best solution right now is to have the battery replaced with a new one at a service center.

In case the battery of your phone is healthy but it still drains fast then it’s time to do the recommended troubleshooting steps which we have listed below. Before doing the steps listed below make sure your phone is running on the latest software version. This will minimize the possibility of the problem being caused by an outdated software version.

1.

Perform a force restart

If the problem is caused by a software glitch then a force restart will be able to fix this as it will refresh the phone software.

Perform a hard reset

Apple claims that the new iPhone 5 offers up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G, up to 8 hours of internet use on 3G, up to 8 hours on LTE and up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi, up to 10 hours of video playback, up to 40 hours of audio playback and finally up to 225 hours of standby time.

However, you might have noticed that your iPhone 5’s battery life falls short based on your usage pattern.

So we take a look at how to manage your shiny new iPhone 5’s battery life and also provide some tips on how you can extend it.

Understanding Your Battery Usage:

As we mentioned earlier, iPhone 5 offers the following battery life:

  • Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G
  • Standby time: Up to 225 hours
  • Internet use: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 8 hours on LTE, up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi
  • Video playback: Up to 10 hours
  • Audio playback: Up to 40 hours

You can check out the usage and standby time since the last full charge via the Settings app (launch the Settings app, tap on General, then tap on Usage, scroll down to Time since last full charge section). You can also tap on Cellular Usage to find out how much time you were on the call.

Usage is the amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. The phone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or even during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.

Battery Percentage:

By default, iOS displays the battery level in the top right corner of the status bar. You can keep track of the charge remaining in your iPhone more easily by enabling the battery percentage indicator, which displays the battery left in percentage. To display the battery percentage indicator, launch the Settings app, tap on General, then tap on Usage, scroll down and tap on the Battery Percentage toggle to enable it.

Some tips to extend battery life:

  • Set Auto-Lock interval so that your iPhone will turn off more quickly after a period of inactivity. To set the auto-Lock interval, launch the Settings app, tap on General and then Auto-Lock and set the atuo-lock interval to either 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 minutes.
  • You’re probably aware that using Wi-Fi drains iPhone’s battery, but perhaps you didn’t know that one of the most intensive processes that iPhone’s Wi-Fi chip has to do is search for available network. So if this happens in regular intervals, it’s going to have a noticeable impact on your battery. To disable this feature, launch the Settings app, tap on Wi-Fi, and tap on the On/Off toggle for Ask to Join Networks to disable it. Please note that by disabling this feature, your iPhone will join known Wi-Fi networks automatically, but you will have to manually select a network if no known networks are available.
  • Dimming the screen helps to extend battery life. You can either lower the default screen brightness based on your preference or turn on Auto-Brightness to allow the screen to adjust its brightness based on current lighting conditions. Launch the Settings app, scroll down and tap on Brightness & Wallpaper and set Auto-Brightness to On. Note: Apple enables it by default.
  • Turn off LTE if it is not available in your area (Settings -> General -> Cellular -> Enable LTE)
  • Turn off Location services for the following System System services: Diagnostics & Usage, Setting Time Zone, Location Based iAds (Settings ->  Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services).
  • Turn off Weather and Stock widgets from Notification Center. (Settings -> Notifications -> Weather Widget/Stock Widget -> Notification Center).
  • Heat can degrade performance of your iPhone’s battery. So it is important to keep the iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (including the glove box).
  • If you’re on the plane or in an area where there is no cellular coverage then use Airplane mode to increase battery life (Settings > Airplane Mode).

Optimize Settings based on your usage:

iPhone 5 offers tons of features, but some of the features comes at the cost of battery life, so it is prudent to turn off things that you’re not using.

  • If you hardly use Bluetooth then turn it off (Settings -> General -> Bluetooth)
  • Review the list of apps that are using Location services, and disable it for apps you think can be used without tracking your location (Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services).
  • If you check multiple email accounts on your iPhone, enable Push for only the most important email account/accounts. For other accounts, fetch emails manually if possible for better battery life.
  • These days most apps use Push Notification service to alert you of new data, which can impact battery life. We tend to blindly say “Yes”, when an app asks us if it can send Push notifications. So it is a good idea to review the apps that have push notifications enabled. Go to Settings -> Notifications and disable notifications for select apps. Please note that it doesn’t prevent new data from being received when the app is opened.
  • Turn off Siri’s Raise to Speak feature if you don’t use it frequently (Settings -> General -> Siri -> Raise to Speak).
  • Turn off Siri if you don’t use it (Settings -> General -> Siri).
  • Turn off Personal Hotspot if you’re not using it (Settings -> Personal Hotspot).
  • Turn off equalizer setting for song playback (Settings -> Music -> EQ).

Troubleshooting

If you observe a sudden degradation in battery life, it could be due to an app that is hogging your iPhone’s battery life. If you haven’t restarted your iPhone for a while then the easiest solution is to reset your iPhone.

  • Force an app to close: If you’ve identified the app that may be hogging your iPhone’s battery life then force it to close. Hold down the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then hold down the Home button  until the app closes. You can also remove an app from the app switcher to force it to close.
  • Restart/Reset Your iPhone: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
  • Resetting Network Settings: Reset network settings by tapping Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. This will reset all network settings, including passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
  • Restore iPhone as New: If you’ve setup your iPhone 5 by restoring from backup then the battery life problems could be due to some issue with the backup. Try to restore your iPhone 5 (Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content And Settings) and set it up as a new iPhone (this is not ideal). But before you erase all the contents and settings, please take a backup of your iPhone.
  • Make a Genius Bar reservation: If there is a significant degradation in battery life and the solutions mentioned above doesn’t help then take it to the Apple Store, it could well be a problem with your iPhone, which may need to be replaced.

Charge Your iPhone:

This goes without saying but it is important to charge your iPhone, so take the Lightning to USB cable and the power adapter wherever you go.

Battery Maintenance:

You should also use the iPhone regularly for proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery. In fact, Apple advices users to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

As you can see there are quite a few ways to improve or extend your iPhone’s battery life, but it comes at the cost of sacrificing some features and user experience. So look at the usage statistics and disable only those things that will help you get through an entire day without charging your iPhone.

Battery life, connectivity and iTunes — iPhone 5S review

Battery life

While the iPhone 5 brought with it an improvement in battery life for the iPhone range, there was still room for more, and to an extent the iPhone 5S delivered.

When we first reviewed the phone the main improvement was the fact that leaving the iPhone 5S on standby, perhaps overnight, sees very little drain on the battery. One night I noticed around 15% drop, but after that it was merely 4-5% on average which I can put down to iOS 7 keeping its apps in order a little better. On iOS 8.1 the battery dropped around 7% overnight, and iOS 9 scores about the same based on the most recent tests run on the handset.

So that’s a big problem of the iPhone battery sort of solved: if it’s in your pocket, it won’t inexplicably run out of juice.

However, there’s still a rather large issue I need to address with the battery, and that’s the problem of actually using the phone. I test a large number of devices here at techradar, and in the more intensive tests it’s always interesting to see which phone fares better.

A little photography, web browsing, video watching and flicking through apps not only warmed up the 5S quite considerably but also saw a rather rapid drain in the battery. For instance: streaming BBC iPlayer on the train home for half an hour saw a 20% drop in the battery life.

I can’t see how the claims of eight hours’ browsing on 3G holds any water, as that was one area that really hurt the battery and caused the phone to heat up. Talking also drained the power pack, and Apple originally quoted up to 10 hours on 3G back in 2013. Again, I can’t see it.

It’s not horrendous, and if you’re an iPhone user you’ll be used to a faster battery drain, but there’s definitely a wistful air that hangs over me every time I check out the battery percentage in the top-right corner.

With iOS 7.1 we saw a 17% power drop in our techradar video loop test, which is decent enough, but with iOS 8.1 that became an even larger 25% drop. By the time we ran the test with iOS 9.2.1 that was up to 33%.

With the latest iOS 9.2.1 installed, we were seeing drops of around 15% every half hour when gaming, and a whopping 15% every 10 minutes when using the sat nav in Apple Maps.

There is a caveat here: if you buy a new iPhone 5S from Apple you’ll get a brand new battery, not one that’s been charging and draining for the past two-and-a-half years like the one in the techtadar test unit – it’s pretty much on its last legs.

Those are still disappointing battery scores, though. With a new battery and iOS 9.2.1 (Low Power Mode and all) you might see a significant improvement, but this is a phone that’s going to struggle to get to the end of the day if you use it in any serious capacity.

However, here’s a great little update that will cheer you up: the iPhone 5S charges phenomenally quickly. REALLY quickly. I timed a charge at just a little over two hours from nearly dead – that’s great if you just need a slug of juice on the run.

Connectivity

Unsurprisingly the iPhone 5S comes will all manner of connectivity options, but NFC is still the high-profile absentee at the Apple party. Not even the plastic clad iPhone 5C could tempt the firm to give us a bit of contactless tech, and it clearly paints a picture of where the brand stands in this area.

The latest iPhones and iPads have put Apple’s NFC connectivity game on the map, but it’s sadly lacking on the iPhone 5S. It’s annoying because it means Apple Pay won’t work with the iPhone 5S, even though it has the Touch ID component.

It’s worth mentioning again that the iPhone 5S sports Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, 3G and 4G connectivity, with special mention of the latter as this phone supports the most LTE bands than any other smartphone of its vintage, allowing even more people to take advantage of the super-fast network.

As is now standard on iOS, the Control Center gives you a quick way to control Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, which are accessed with a swipe up from the bottom of the screen as mentioned before.

This brings up some shortcut settings, including toggles for both connections, plus you can also enable airplane mode here if you want to go off the grid – or, you know, if you get on a plane.

GPS and GLONASS also make an appearance to help you locate yourself in Maps with earth shattering accuracy (and very quickly, too) and navigate you round the world with the free turn-by-turn satellite navigation system.

The iPhone 5S sports Apple’s latest Lightning connection port, so you shouldn’t have any problem picking up peripherals or docks for the phone. The same standard is used on Apple’s latest phones.

It provides a faster connection than the 30-pin port it replaced, enabling faster data transfer, so you won’t be waiting around quite so long. Plus you can plug it in either way round, which saves scrabbling at night.

Apple’s own cloud storage solution, cunningly named iCloud, is gradually getting more polished. It enables you to store all your vital information in its secure servers should the worst happen to your iPhone 5S.

You can back up everything from contacts, mail and calendars to photos, documents and notes to iCloud, and if you’ve owned an iDevice in the past you can download your settings from that onto your iPhone 5S, saving you from having to re-enter various bits of information.

iCloud also enables the ‘Find my iPhone’ feature, so if you were to misplace your new iPhone you can log onto the iCloud website and see where your phone is on a map.

Once located you have the choice of making play a sound so you can dig it out from behind the sofa, report it as lost or erase the contents of the phone – it’s all very clear stuff.

iTunes

No longer is there a reliance in Apple’s desktop iTunes software when you come to starting up your iPhone for the first time – no physical connection ever needs to made to a computer during the lifetime of the 5S if you don’t fancy digging out your Lightning cable (although you’ll probably need it to charge the handset).

If you do decide it’s time for things to get physical between your computer and iPhone then you’ll need to make sure you’ve got the 11.1 and up version of iTunes installed, otherwise it will refuse to play with your new phone.

Why would you want/need to connect your iPhone 5S to your computer? Well perhaps you’ve got lots of music, movies and photos you want to transfer from your machine to your new phone — iTunes will pull it all in, churn it up and spit it out to your new iPhone in a useable format.

Using iTunes is a rather hit and miss experience, with the software performing far better on a Mac than a Windows PC, but either way it’s usually a long, drawn out process which involves lots of syncing — so avoid it if you can, unless you’re tremendously regimented in your music organisation.

It’s another bit of software that Apple appears to have neglected while it focuses on churning out the world’s best smartphones.

As you can see, with a slight increase in battery size, smartphones work approximately the same. The only thing is that for the iPhone 4s, the talk time in 3g networks has increased. It is unlikely that the extra 10 mAh played a role, but rather the matter is in the improved processor and wireless communication chip. In the improved iPhone 6 series, Apple has «cut» the battery capacity compared to their younger brothers — the usual «six». Moreover, given how reluctant the company is to increase the batteries in its gadgets, such “cuts” are not very pleasant for users. Let’s take a look at how this affected the battery life of the iPhone 6S:

The battery capacity has grown by 245 mAh for the iPhone 7 and by 150 mAh for the iPhone 7 Plus, which should give improved autonomy. This is what Apple tells us in the specifications of the “seventh” iPhones on its website:

However, if you skip all these statements and look at the numbers, you will see that nothing has changed significantly. And some of the numbers that indicate the hours of operation have even decreased. As a result, we can conclude: all these “dances” with indicators left the autonomy at the same level — the iPhone 7 (Plus) keeps charging as long as the “sixes”.

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus battery life on a single charge

Considering the fact that the iPhone 8 is practically the same iPhone 7, it would be foolish to count on some kind of maximally increased autonomy compared to the previous model. It is logical to assume that everything will remain at “plus or minus” exactly the same level.

Agree, not a lot. The battery capacity has become slightly lower, and all other numbers are similar to the «seven». However, Apple does not hide the fact that the iPhone 8 keeps charging exactly the same as the iPhone 7. And even explicitly indicates this in the G8 specifications.

The only moment, the iPhone 8 has fast charging, and for some it can be a decisive factor when choosing a device.

How long does an iPhone X charge?

2017-2018 flagship, new design, new screen, new technology, etc. This is all great, of course. But we, within the framework of this article, are interested in something else — did Apple manage to release something truly revolutionary in terms of battery life?

Let’s take a look at the iPhone X with battery:

  • Battery capacity — 2716 mAh.
  • Talk mode — up to 21 hours.
  • Work on the Internet — up to 12 hours.
  • Audio playback — up to 60 hours.

As you can see, the indicators are almost identical to the iPhone 8 Plus. And the battery capacity is not much different. Apple itself claims that the iPhone X’s battery life is up to 2 hours longer than that of the iPhone 7.

Total. The iPhone X is smaller than any Apple phone with the Plus prefix, but at the same time it is not inferior to them in autonomy. I think it’s very cool!

How long does the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max charge?

Let’s start with the most important:

  • The iPhone XS battery capacity is 2658 mAh.
  • iPhone XS MAX battery capacity is 3174 mAh. At the moment, this is the largest battery that has ever been installed in an iPhone!

Now let’s move on to the main indicators. And if we take the official data, then something unimaginable is happening here:)

Here’s the thing.

We go to the Apple website and see this information about the operating time of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

Nothing embarrassing? For example, two lines strike me very much:

  1. The iPhone XS lasts up to 30 minutes longer without recharging than the iPhone X.
  2. iPhone XS Max lasts up to 1.5 hours longer on a single charge than iPhone X.

And now look at the iPhone X (+ previous iPhone models) and we get a very interesting chain:

  1. The iPhone XS lasts 30 minutes longer than the iPhone X. And the iPhone XS Max lasts 1.5 hours longer, than iPhone X.
  2. At the same time — iPhone X lasts 2 hours longer than iPhone 7.
  3. But that’s not all! iPhone 7 lasts 2 hours longer than iPhone 6S.

Apple, are you all right? 🙂 Add up the numbers and get the result:

  • The iPhone XS lasts longer than the iPhone 6S by 4.5 hours.
  • iPhone XS Max lasts 5.5 hours longer than iPhone 6S.

Is this true? So Apple has almost doubled its battery life since the iPhone 6S?

I wouldn’t say that. In fact, of course, the latest Apple smartphones do hold a charge a little better. But in the end, everything comes to one denominator — the iPhone XS, with active use, keeps charging from morning to evening. The situation with the iPhone XS Max is slightly better (approximately 30% percent).

iPhone XR battery life

As usual, we open the Apple website and see this wonderful inscription: “iPhone XR lasts up to 1.5 hours more than iPhone 8 Plus”.

If you remember the “plus eight”, then it really held its charge quite well. And here we are promised even more! Victory? Depending on which side you look at…

Judging by user reviews, the battery life of the iPhone XR is really not the worst. But! To say that he keeps charging much better than the iPhone 8 Plus (that’s what the phrase «up to 1.5 hours longer» makes you think) is still not necessary.

Approximately the same? Yes. Much longer? No.

However, as we remember, a lot depends on the usage scenario.

For example, if you listen to music with headphones, the iPhone XR will easily work for a couple of days.

But who does that? Virtually no one.

iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max battery life

Apple has outdone itself with the 11 iPhones.

In any case, if we talk about smartphones with the prefix «Pro».

The battery life of the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max far exceeds what we saw in the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max:

  • iPhone 11 Pro lasts up to 4 hours longer than iPhone XS.
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max lasts up to 4 hours longer than iPhone XS Max.

In my opinion, very worthy!

Moreover, according to the reviews of the owners, these data are not so far from the truth — the charge is enough for a whole working day (with fairly active use). And in the case of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the phone “survives” until the evening with about 20% of the charge.

5G is not for everyone

In addition to the above problems of new Apple smartphones with fifth generation networks, there is another, no less obvious. What is meant by moderate load? 1 hour of calls, 3 hours on the Internet (mobile Internet), 1 hour of games and music, 10-15 SMS messages. By the evening, 10-15% of the battery remains. The indicators are highly dependent on the level of the cellular network signal, if it is weak, the battery “melts” quite actively.

What happens if the iPhone falls

Sometimes even a fall from the table is fatal for the iPhone, but it happens otherwise, and even when falling from a much greater height.
