Guru3d interview / Graphics cards

Hilbert Hagedoorn — Webmaster and Online Editor of the Guru 3D (formerly Voodoo Guru)

http://guru3d.com

3DNews: First of all — how old are you and where are you from, maybe you
tell us your nationality?

Guru3d: I’ am 27 years YOUNG and live in a city called Groningen located in The Netherlands. No, we do not like tulips, no this isn’t our biggest export product, yes we have the best cheese in the world and no i don’t smoke weed. (since that is legalized, nowadays)

nine0008

3DNews: Where, when and how started VoodooGuru, what is your contribution in this project? Why have you renamed your project to Guru3D?

Guru3d: Hmm, the second part is a good question; I’ll get into that in a while. The Voodoo Guru (read: me, aka webmaster and editor) started about two and a half years ago. Diamond announced an add-on video card that would increase your 3D game play about 5 times faster then normal. When I bought the card I was in heaven. However, this card wasn’t supported in many games and lacked information on the web. Therefore I decided to set up a website for Voodoo based cards. I wanted it to be a small site where people could ask questions about that very cool product.
nine0004 At first I received 25 users a day, after a week that amount was 500 users a day and after a month I was kicked off my 1st server due to bandwidth limits ect. We are now located at a 150 MBit (OC3) server which is very suitable for our needs.

Now two and a half years later, a lot has changed on the web. The Internet has become a very competitive and strong marketing targeted and most of all commercial model. With new technology and new professional websites, I needed to diverse the site. 3dfx isn’t the only stronghold in 3D chips anymore, look at Matrox, nVIDIA, S3 and ATi. Therefore I felt that since the Voodoo Guru was not a ‘3dfx only’ related site anymore that the name did not cover the charge. At first the new name was going to be 3D Guru, this name covers it all and is easy to remember. However, when I wanted to register the domain it was taken three days before registering. Talk about bad luck eh? Well, I flipped the words and tataa: the Guru of 3D (http://www.guru3d.com) was born.

nine0008

3DNews: What are your goals?

Guru3d: My goal: To have fun! , The site’s goal: to inform users objectively about the latest 3D products (hard- and software).

3DNews: I saw, that your team is multinational, maybe you can tell me, Where and when all of you have meat each other?

Guru3d: Simple, every now and then I get an e-mail from someone that would like to work @ Guru3D. After a little talking and exchanging and some info (+spanking) I decide whether he or she should join the team or not. The Internet is Global and has no limits when it comes to location. Its possible to edit the site from any place in this world.

nine0008

3DNews: Have you any promotional plans for your site? For example some people on Voodoo Extreme are dreaming about VoodooExtreme TV show or VE Magazine 😉

Guru3d: Let them dream! Its good to have a dream, however, will it happen?? Nah … I’d like to see the site expand into a more divers site with hot game-reviews, weekly newsletters etc. therefore I need more editors or more time (and believe me, good editors are hard to find). When that happens, well perhaps I’ll think of bigger and better things then.

nine0008

3DNews: Is it interesting for you to work on Guru3D, is it difficult? Maybe it’s timesome and and you are doing it only for getting a lot (a lot?) of money?

Guru3d: Interesting, hell yeah! I love the job, otherwise I wouldn’t do it. Maintaining a website takes up a lot of time and money. Is it difficult? hmm, sometimes. It’s very hard to explain new technologies to an audience that just has learned what the verb AGP means. On the other side, to get that message across is a goal on its own.

nine0008

3DNews: Is Guru3D your main work, or is it hust a hobby? How do you pass your work day?

Guru3d: Most of you don’t realize that being a Webmaster of a medium sized site isn’t getting the big bucks. The site is break-even. Therefore I have a job just like anyone else does.

I spend about 3 hours a day on the site and work full-time in a 4-star Hotel ( Hotel de Ville) here in Groningen (come and taste the lobster people!). Besides that i’m working freelance as a web designer for a multi-media company.
nine0004 If the site was generating enough money I would love to make a full-time job of it though. I love the work.

3DNews: Was your design so as now from the beginning, or you got it lated? If so, how much was the cost (if it’s not a secret, or have you made it by yourself), I clearly understand that you maybe cannot read russian, but if it’s not difficult, say something about our site 😉

Guru3d: Hmm let me count, the site’s design has changed about 4 times. Just like your video card we are tweaking the site to get the best performance and quality. I design and develop the site/html-code. The users want an eye-catchy site. With the introduction of HTML 4+ a lot of new options and possibilities became available. It’s safe to say that the design changes about every 6-12 months. (I’m very pleased with the current design though!)

nine0004 Your site? Well, it rocks! your site is very well edited, updated and graphically very good enhanced. I wish i had the time and creative insight to make something like that. I can see that you guys have put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears into your page. And that why i believe it is a succes.

3DNews: Tnx! When does your work day starts? Your employees live in different countries, are there any problems with timezones ?

Guru3d: We are all independent editors with an own section. Therefore, time zones do not matter. We e-mail the crap out of each other though.

nine0008

-----o Second section -> about your personality

3DNews: Have you a cool expencive personal car like Ferrari or something similar? What are you thinking about your personal financial position?

Guru3d: I wish I could own one; I’ve driven a TVR last week though. (I had to return the keys to the owner after 15 mins though) Sigh…

That last question is far too personal, lets keep it that way. Let’s just say that I live well.

nine0008

3DNews: What are your favorite things in this life, how are you spending your free time, have you a wife and kids, (if yes, what do you think about how they perceive your work, or have you another earnings beside Guru3D)

Guru3d: I’m a huge technology freak, come into my house and you’ll find DVD, Dolby Digital, wide-screen TV’s, far too many speakers, computers etc. as you can probably understand, this + my girlfriend (not married) takes up about all my free time. Oh, I’m forgetting my biggest, baddest and most mean cat called ‘Morphy’ who actually is biting me right now for some food.

nine0008

3DNews: What games or programs do you like?

Guru3d: Ugh, that changes every month and with every technology change. In general, F1 Sims (I love F1, yeah SHUMACHER rules, to bad the dumbass broke his leg though), Strategy games like Settlers, Anno 1602, Sims-City and of course a healthy doses of 3D games like Half-Life (which still is the best 3D game to my personal opinion), King-Pin and Shogo. The game has to have a storyline in it to keep me interested. I never liked Quake since it’s so simple … just shoot and run. Don’t spank ehm.. spam me boys and girls!
(are there any pretty girls out there hi, e-mail me!) And last but not least, i’m still playing Rainbow Six over and over again. (so, watch out for me in my Donald Duck underwear and sniper rifle).

nine0008

 --------o Third - Future

3DNews: What are you thinking about the current situation on the 3D market? What do you guess will matter in this industry in 2 years.

And maybe you can predict the situation in 10 years? What technologies will we see at home then?

Guru3d: Hmm, in the first two years of 3D technology we have basically seen two goals. 1) Speed, the faster the better 2) resolution improvement Those 2 goals have now been reached. Of course things will get faster since its inherent to quality, but who needs to play a game in 3000x ???? pixels. Max 1600×1200 is all we need. nine0004 What we will see in the time to come is pure quality. We want to play games like we are in an almost real but virtual generated world. (Real-time photographic quality) Games will get closer and closer to the real thing. 3D gaming needs better lightning and FX. We can already see developments into that direction with hardware accelerated bump-mapping and full screen anti-aliasing. Things will get by far better in the near future. And in ten years? Hell… How should I know. I guess … try to render a picture with a program like 3D-Max or lightwave in the highest available quality, that’s where we are heading but then in real-time. Why? Because we want it to be like that.

nine0008

3DNews: What 3D card do you use now? What card do you like? What do you think about rumors on next 3dfx/nVidia products?

Currently I’m using a Voodoo3 3000 in my primary system and a TNT2 in my 2nd system. On next generation products I can’t tell you much since I’m under a NDA at this time.

3DNews: What do you think about the situation on the hardware market, when huge developers are merging? Is it good for end users?
nine0004 Guru3d: That answer goes into 2 directions. No, in the end the consumer will pay more since there are fewer manufacturers to choose from.

And yes, its good since merging will produce better quality products.

But in the end, we’ll pay more.

3DNews: What current technologies do you think have potential for be used in next year?

Guru3d: Full 32 Bit rendering, Bump-mapping, full screen anti-aliasing and better lightning environment FX most certainly have potential. Will all this happen? Check Guru 3D every once in a while, we’ll keep you informed.

nine0008

Best regards

3DNews: First of all, how old, where are you from and what is your nationality?

Guru3d: I’m 27 and live in a city called Groningen in the Netherlands. And we don’t like our tulips, which we export, but we have the best cheese in the world, and besides, I don’t smoke weed, although this is now officially allowed.

nine0008

3DNews: When and where did the VoodooGuru project start? Why was it renamed to Guru3D?

Guru3d: Hmm… The second question is good, I’ll tell you now. The VoodooGuru project (in the sense of my personal page, where I was both a webmaster and an editor) started about two and a half years ago. Diamond then announced an add-on video card that would speed up your gameplay five times. When I bought the card, I was in ecstasy. It is clear that the card was not supported by many games and its users experienced a lack of information on the network. So I decided to create a site for cards based on Voodoo chips. I wanted to make the site such a small place where users could find answers to questions about these cool boards. At first I had 25 readers a day, after a week — about 500, and a month later I was kicked out of the server for exceeding the traffic. We are currently on a 150Mbps (OC3) server which is just what we need for our needs.
nine0004 Now, after two and a half years, a lot has changed in the network. The Internet has become a very important marketing platform, and most importantly, a commercial model. When new technologies and new professional Web sites appeared, I had to diversify the site. 3dfx is no longer a monopolist in the 3D chip market, just look at Matrox, nVidia, S3 and ATi. Since I realized that Voodoo Guru is no longer «only a 3dfx site» the title no longer reflects the truth about it. At first the name was changed to 3D Guru, the name suited the theme well and was easy to remember. As always, when trying to register a domain, I had to spend three days. Looks like bad luck, huh? Well, I swapped the words and boom — Guru3D was born (http://www.guru3d.com)

nine0008

3DNews: And what is your goal?

Guru3d: My goal is to have fun, the purpose of the site is to objectively inform the user about the latest 3D products (both hardware and software).

3DNews: I noticed that your team is extremely multinational, can you tell us how and when you managed to get to know each other?

Guru3d: It’s simple, I still get letters from those who want to work in Guru 3D. After some conversations, I decide whether to accept a person into the team or not. The Internet is global, so it doesn’t matter where you are. The site can be edited from anywhere.

nine0008

3DNews: Good luck to you, do you have plans for further promotion of the site? Here one guy from Voodoo Extreme dreams of his own TV channel or his own magazine 😉

Guru3d: Well, let him keep dreaming! Of course, a dream is good, but is it real? Nah… I wish I could see my site more extended in terms of drivers and game reviews, weekly news and all that. So I need to have more editors, or more time (and trust me, good editors are hard to come by). When that happens, maybe I’ll think of bigger things.

nine0008

3DNews: Is it interesting to work? Maybe you’re only doing it for big money (big money?)

Guru3d: You know, damn it, yes, interesting! I love this job, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it. Is it difficult to work? Hmm… sometimes difficult. It is rather difficult to explain new technologies to an audience that has just memorized the meaning of the acronym AGP. But on the other hand, understanding what is written in the text is already the problem of the reader himself.

nine0008

3DNews: Is Guru3D your main job or is it a hobby? How is the working day?

Guru3d: You know, a lot of people don’t understand that being a webmaster of a mediocre site you don’t make a lot of money. Therefore, like everyone else, I have a main job. I spend about three hours a day on the site, and I work in a four-star hotel (Hotel de Ville) here in Groningen (people, stop by and try our lobsters!). In addition, in my spare time I work as a web designer for a multimedia company. And if the site gave enough money, I would happily work all day on it alone. I like this job.

nine0008

3DNews: Is the design of your site like this from the beginning, or did you make it later? If so, how much money did you have to pay for it (unless, of course, this is a secret, or you created everything yourself), it is completely clear to me that you cannot read Russian, but still you can say something about our site?

Guru3d: Hmm. .. Let me count, the site changed its design four times. The way you tweak a video card is the way we do it with the site, trying to achieve the best ratio of beautifulness with loading speed. I invent and create html site code. Users need a beautiful site, and with the advent of HTML 4+, a lot has become possible. In principle, we can say that the design is updated every 6-12 months (in principle, I really like the current design)
nine0008

Your website? Cool! very high quality created, well edited and graphically well implemented. I wish I had more time and creativity to create something like this. Sounds like you guys are putting a lot of sweat and blood into your site. And so I believe that your site is successful.

3DNews: Thank you! When does your working day start? Your employees live in different countries, do you have any problems with time zones?

Guru3d: We have such a system that everyone edits his section himself. Therefore, there are no problems over time.

nine0008

---- The second section is about yourself ----

3DNews: Do you have a cool car like a Ferrari or something? What do you think about your financial situation?

Guru3d: I dream of one, I rode TVR here last week (although I had to return the keys after 15 minutes). Eh … The last question is very personal, let’s pass this topic. Let’s just say — I live normally.

3DNews: What are your favorite things in life, how do you spend your time, do you have a wife, children (if so, what do they think about your work)
nine0004 Guru3d: I’m a terrible techie, come to my house, you will see DVD, Dolby Digital, widescreen TVs, a lot of speakers, computers and all that, how do you understand all this + my girlfriend (I’m not married) takes almost all of my free time. Oh, I also forgot to mention my cat Morphy, who is demanding food from me right now.

3DNews: What toys or programs do you like?

Guru3d: Heh, preferences change every month. In general — F1 sims (I like F1, Schumacher is the best, bastards who broke his leg), strategy games like Settlers, Anno 1602, Sims-City and of course a healthy dose of 3D games like Half-Life (which I think is the best). 3D shooter), KingPin and Shogo. The game should have a storyline that will be interesting to me. I never liked Quake because of its primitiveness — just run and shoot. Come on, no offense… spam me guys! (how are you and the cool girls, throw me some soap!) And last but not least, I still play Rainbow Six all the time (watch out when I’m in Donald Duck underwear with a sniper)

nine0008

---- The third section - the future ----

3DNews: What do you think about the situation in the 3D market? What will happen to the industry in 2 years. Can you predict the situation in 10 years? What technologies will we see at home then?

Guru3d: Hmm, in the first two years 3D technology went in two directions — 1) The speed got faster and faster 2) The working resolution increased. We have practically achieved both goals. Of course, the speed will increase due to the need for better quality, but who will need to play at a resolution of 3000x, how many pixels are there. The maximum we need is 1600×1200.
nine0008

Quality will improve over time, and only quality. We want to play games that are similar to the real world, but created virtually. (Photo quality in real time). Games will become more and more closer to the real world. 3D games need better lighting calculations and more beautiful effects. We are already seeing developments in hardware embossing and full-screen anti-aliasing. In the near future, everything will become much better. And in 10 years? Damn… how do I know? I guess… imagine a picture drawn in 3D-Max or LightWave with the highest quality possible, but rendered in real time. Why? Because that’s what we want.

3DNews: What 3D card are you using? What do you like? What do you think about the rumors about the next products from 3dfx/nVidia?

Guru3d: I am currently using Voodoo3 3000 on my first system and TNT2 on my second system. About future products, I can only say that now I am completely confused.

3DNews: What do you think about the situation in the market when we see global associations of development companies? Is it good for the end user?
nine0004 Guru3d: The answer is twofold. No, in the end the buyer will pay more as there is less choice. Yes, it’s good, because the quality will be higher. But in the end, we will pay more.

3DNews: What current technologies do you see as promising for use next year?

Guru3d: Full 32 Bit rendering, Bump-mapping, full screen anti-aliasing and improved lightning quality, environment FX are perhaps promising technologies. Will they be used? Read Guru3D, we will try to keep you updated.
