New Intel Xeon E7 series
The new Intel Xeon — E7 processor series is designed to work in corporate servers with mission-critical enterprise-wide applications. Such applications include databases, virtualization systems, business intelligence, data processing and analysis programs.
Intel Xeon E7 have six to ten cores and are divided into three subfamilies — E7-2800, E7-4800 and E7-8800. The E7-2800 is designed for use in two processor chassis, the E7-4800 in four processor servers, and the E7-8800, you guessed it, in eight processor servers. According to Intel, the line of these chips can be installed in standard servers capable of running 256 physical chips in parallel.
Technologically, the Intel Xeon E7 is a 32nm incarnation of Westmere’s previous generation technology, as Intel traditionally chronologically separates the moments of transition from one technological process to another, and the moments of updating the microprocessor architecture. Therefore, the 32-nanometer Xeon E7 based on Sandy Bridge will appear only in a few months. (And the 32nm Xeon E3 has been on sale for a month and a half now.)
Significantly redesigned corporate data security features:
- Intel AES-NI — responsible for accelerated data encryption
- Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) and Double Device Data Correction (DDDC) are designed to protect against errors in the server’s memory. If TXT was already present in Xeon, then DDDC used to be only in more expensive Itanium processors. The value of these technologies can be felt primarily in the operation of computing virtualization systems.
Migration of used technologies from more expensive products to cheaper ones is a common practice for Intel. From the company’s point of view, the E7 is not an Itanium competitor, as these products are aimed at different categories of consumers. Intel says: “E7 is not an Itanium replacement, but a wider choice for customers. We position Itanium as a solution for Unix users, in E7 for users who want to work with Linux, Windows and Solaris,» says Richard George, director of Intel Cloud Services.
Speaking of performance, the Xeon E7 is about 40% faster than the Xeon 7500. Intel believes that in terms of total computing power, one rack with E7 servers replaces up to 18 racks with old dual-core Xeons. The company also says that for the first time the company began testing chips on dozens of industrial tests, such as SpecInt, SpecFP, TPC-E. The processors now support up to 2 terabytes of memory, which is double the previous generation Xeon 7500 processors that the E7 is replacing.
Even more powerful than previous Xeons, the new E7 processors have kept power consumption in the traditional Xeon range of 95-130 watts.

10 innovations Intel Xeon E7 v2 Ivy Bridge-EX | Windows IT Pro/RE
Server designers have made significant strides in performance and reliability over previous generations, and both computers use the new Intel Xeon E7 v2 Ivy Bridge-EX processor. This is a representative of a new generation of processors with multiple cores and high-capacity memory. Undoubtedly, the Xeon E7 will be used in the most modern enterprise-class servers. For more information about this processor, see the «Intel Xeon Processor E7 v2 Family Technical Overview» (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-xeon-processor-e7-v2-family-technical- overview), but for now, here is a list of the 10 most noteworthy features of this processor family
Do you need a super powerful server? We recently tested two HP ProLiant DL580 Gen8 and NEC Express5800/A2000 CX models in our lab. You can learn more about this processor from the Intel Xeon Processor E7 v2 Family Technical Overview (http://software. intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-xeon-processor-e7-v2-family-technical- overview), but for now we offer you a list of the 10 most notable features of this processor family.
1. Sockets
The new Xeon E7 v2 processors are being released in a variety of multi-socket configurations. The Xeon E7-2800 v2 processors are for dual socket systems, the Xeon E7-4800 v2 processors are for four socket computers, and the Xeon E7-8800 v2 processors are for eight socket servers. Xeon E7 v2 processors are installed on the Intel LGA2011 Socket R1 socket.
2. Number of cores
There are 20 Intel Xeon E7 v2 variants with different core counts; choose from 6, 8, 10, 12 or 15 cores. All processors use Hyper-Threading technology with two threads per core. The cores on the crystal are arranged in three rows, five cores each.
3. Clock speeds and cache
Clock speeds for the eight-socket Xeon E7-8800 v2 processor series range from a high of 3.4 GHz to a low of 2. 3 GHz. L3 cache sizes range from 37.5 MB to 24 MB. For the Xeon E7-4800 v2 series with four sockets, the clock speed and cache range from 2.8 GHz and 37.5 MB, respectively, to 1.9 GHz and 12 MB. Dual-socket Xeon E7-2800 v2 series performance and cache from 2.8 GHz and 37.5 MB to 2.3 GHz and 24 MB.
4. Addressable memory
One of the most important changes in the new processors is a huge increase in the size of addressable memory. Servers with Xeon E7 v2 processors can address up to 4TB of RAM, double that of previous generations. The new processors support DIMMs up to 64 GB, 24 DIMMs per socket. Xeon E7 v1 uses 32 GB DIMMs (maximum 16 DIMMs per socket).
5. Production process
The miniaturization of the manufacturing process is one of the reasons Xeon E7 v2 processors can have so many cores. The Xeon E7 v1 processors are manufactured using 32nm technology, while the Xeon E7 v2 processors are manufactured using a 22nm manufacturing process, increasing the maximum number of cores by 50%.
6. Transistors
With a new 22nm manufacturing process, the number of transistors in the advanced Xeon E7 v2 models reaches an incredible 4.3 billion.
7. Power
The problem of energy consumption is becoming more acute for IT departments. Most companies strive to solve IT problems without compromising the environment. The 3.4GHz Xeon E7-8893 v2 processor has a maximum TDP of 155W. The more economical 2.3 GHz Xeon E7-2870 v2 model has a more modest figure — 105 watts.
8. Connections
The Xeon E7 v2 processors feature two memory controllers and three Intel QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) subsystems with a speed of 8 billion transfers per second (GT/s). Intel QPI technology is used to connect processors to each other, as well as to the I / O controller. In addition, the Xeon E7 v2 supports the PCI Express 3.0 bus with a maximum of 32 lanes.
9. Advanced CPU
The Xeon E7 v2 processors feature all of Intel’s advanced features: Turbo Boost Technology, Hyper-Threading, Virtualization Technology, Extended Page Tables (EPT), Enhanced SpeedStep, and Thermal Monitoring.
