Socket 1155 appeared in 2011 and quickly won people’s love. This was mainly due to the extremely successful Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, which, despite their age, even now cope well with modern games and applications. nine0003
A list of all released models, as well as the specifics of the 1155 socket architecture, can be found in this article.
But things are not so good with core i3, pentium and celeron processors, the performance margin is clearly not enough for many modern tasks, and overclocking of these processors is not provided. At the same time, upgrading to more powerful models is far from always advisable: the prices for i5 and i7 are still quite high even in the secondary market, it may not be justified to invest that much money in an old socket. nine0003
However, there are also Intel Xeon E3 server processors for lga 1155 that can work in most common motherboards. Replacing an old processor with a Xeon can be much cheaper, and the increased performance due to such an update will allow postponing a global computer upgrade for another couple of years.
Intel Xeon E3 specifications
In total, Intel has released two Xeon lines for this socket: regular E3 and E3 v2 with slightly improved characteristics. The first generation Xeon E3 is based on the Sandy Bridge core, the second generation is based on Ivy Bridge. nine0003
Main differences between Xeon E3 v2 and v1:
- Smaller technical process, correspondingly lower tdp
- Ivy Bridge cores are slightly more powerful than Sandy cores at the same frequency
- Memory frequency of 1600 MHz is supported instead of 1333 MHz for the v1 series
-e 3.0 instead of 2.0
Of all these benefits, 1600 MHz memory support is the main one. The difference between pci-e of different versions will hardly be noticeable even for high-end graphics cards, and the difference in performance and heat dissipation is not so high. nine0079

As you can see, some server processors are very similar to their desktop counterparts. The main differences are the missing video core (except for models ending in 5) and a slightly lower tdp. Models with the L index are low voltage and boast a significantly lower tdp.
Highlights
- E3 1230 / 40 / 70 v1 — the difference between the models is only 100 MHz. The difference in price is also insignificant. All of them can be considered a budget option for the Core I7 2600. They do a good job both with games and with other ordinary tasks. The most attractive in terms of price / performance ratio.
- E3 1230 / 40 / 70 v2 — similar to the first generation, but they are already analogues of the Core i7 3770. They cope with games a little better, but they also cost more. Pay or not — it’s up to you.
- Older models such as 1280 and 1290 of both generations are still too expensive, so they are not interesting.
- If you need an integrated video core (for example, for an office computer), select the appropriate model, the name of which ends with 5.
- the board supports overclocking and its process itself is not scary — it makes sense to pay extra and take the original I7 2600k.
Motherboard Compatibility
All Xeon E3 server processors for socket 1155 are fully compatible and work seamlessly on any motherboard. You don’t need to flash the BIOS, reinstall the OS, or do anything else.
Extremely rare exception — boards from workstations Dell, HP, etc. They may not support any (usually second) generation.
Performance
On average, socket 1155 outperforms socket 1156 with its Xeon X3400 line, but build on 1155 will cost more. Most processors can handle modern (relative to their age) games well, but there is no headroom left for the future. If this option does not suit you, take a closer look at socket 2011 and 2011-3. nine0003
Acceleration
Acceleration in this case is only available via the bus. You should not count on large values, a maximum of 5-7% of the stock frequency. Overclocking RAM can improve performance, but it is only available on motherboards with P or Z chipsets. Otherwise, you will have to be content with the standard frequency, which is 1333 MHz for v1 series stones and 1600 MHz for v2.
Cooling
Almost all stones have a fairly modest heat emission and no large tower coolers or water cooling are required to remove heat. As a rule, inexpensive models will suffice. nine0003
It is worth noting that v1 processors have solder under the cover, while v2 processors have thermal paste, which loses its properties over time, which can lead to an increase in temperature.

Acceleration
Alas, like the entire Xeon line for socket 1155, this processor hardly overclocks. You can only squeeze out an additional 5-7% performance by lifting the tire.
Slight bus overclocking
Overclocking of RAM for v2 processors is not so necessary (initially 1600 MHz is supported instead of 1333 MHz for the v1 series), but it won’t be superfluous either. True, this possibility is only available on motherboards with P and Z chipsets.
Cooling
Inexpensive tower coolers with 2-3 heat pipes are suitable for heat removal. It is not recommended to use boxed Intel coolers and other very low-end models, the temperature in the load becomes close to critical. nine0003
Verified inexpensive coolers
COMPOSSIBLE. Among Chinese coolers, the horizontal Snowman is considered a good choice. There is also a large six-pipe model that can be taken for a further upgrade.
