A Closer Look
The XFX RX 480 GTR Black Edition features a neutral matte black aesthetic which complements a wide range of components. To create a more distinctive appearance, some glossy accents were added which contrasts with the matte sections in a pleasant manner. Even though the graphics card’s design doesn’t look particularly inspiring, the matte coating ensures it doesn’t become engulfed with dust. Given the price point, the plastic shroud is surprisingly sturdy and attached using a solid mechanism.
Here we can see the graphics card has an attractive aluminium backplate which reduces GPU droop while improving the product’s appearance. The backplate sports a gorgeous XFX logo and incorporates ventilation holes to help hot air to escape from the PCB. Also, the backplate is quite thick and greatly enhances the graphics card’s resistance against those adopting a heavy-handed approach.
XFX has employed a substantial cooling solution which revolves around four composite copper heat pipes consisting of a hollow pipe, liquid, microgrooved surface and sintered layer microdents. This ingenious design increases the surface area by 30%, leading to a significant temperature drop. On another note, the high-performance unibody heatsink connects to the copper heat pipes and makes direct contact with the GPU’s core. The dense fin array and open design combine to maintain a good amount of airflow as well as limiting turbulence.
The company also developed a new method of cooling the VRM and memory through a thermal pad. This is a welcome inclusion which keeps the VRMs within a more sensible operating temperature and protects the memory from failure as time goes on.
XFX’s exclusive low-noise XL inductors use multiple layers to seal the inductors and almost eliminate buzzing commonly seen on lower-end components. The clean PCB layout and exemplary power delivery is a testament to product’s build quality and I wouldn’t expect any issues to arise even when using high voltages.
Replacing a graphics card’s fans used to be a complex process and often forced the end-user to ship the entire product for a lengthy RMA. This is really inconvenient and an inefficient way of dealing with the root problem. Thankfully, XFX has designed a toolless method of swapping out the fans which take a matter of seconds. All you have to do is simply press the two catches and lift the fan upwards. This is very useful if a fan becomes faulty because XFX can ship out a replacement in the knowledge it will be installed correctly. Also, the option to uncouple the fans makes it more likely for you to thoroughly clean them which should prolong their lifespan.
The auto load sensing fans continuously monitor thermal readings and adjust the RPM values accordingly. During idle scenarios, the fans can switch off completely and provide a silent desktop experience.
Evidently, a major benefit of the inventive fan mounting system is the flexibility to install LED fans which dramatically change the graphics card’s style. In an ideal world, I’d prefer these to be included by default but this isn’t possible due to the lack of RGB customisation. Instead, it’s better to target a cheaper base price and give people the option to choose red, blue or white LED fans. Selecting one of these as standard might limit the product’s appeal due to a colour clash.
The graphics card requires a single 8-pin PCI-E connector which can easily contend with a hefty overclock. Additionally, the GPU has a BIOS switch which cycles between the performance mode running at 1338MHz and a quieter profile based on a 1288MHz frequency. The emergence of two profiles is useful if one becomes corrupt and you need to test the card’s stability.
Connectivity-wise, the graphics card opts for a dual-link DVI-D port, three Displayport 1.4 and HDMI 2.0b.
Once powered on, the XFX logo illuminates in a white shade and adds a more spectacular touch. If you decide to install the optional LED fans, the end result is stunning and I adore the vibrant red colour. This brings a new lease of life into the GPU’s appearance and I’d recommend the LED fans for this reason alone.

XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS Black Edition 8Gb —
I continue to tell you about very interesting mining instances. In this case, this is the XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS Black Edition at 8Gb. First of all, I was attracted to this card by the fact that the card had Samsung memory, which runs well, and also the price was $360.
At that time there was no shortage of cards, so I could easily intercept this card. True, I had to go with my own power supply, since the seller claimed that the card came from the USA and he did not even install it for himself and did not check for performance. All this (the brand unknown to me, the behavior of the seller and the fact that the card is used with an unknown history) made me very worried, but the price of the card still made me go and look at it.
The card was checked normally, everything worked fine, the card really was in new condition (according to the legend, the person who bought the card used it for several days, after which he decided to sell it). According to information on the Internet, the card was supposed to give out 30 megahash on the air in stock, which was not bad at all, and even very good.
Arriving home and installing the map, I launched the miner, which showed me only 22 megahash. I was very upset and useful to study the forums for what I’m doing wrong. There was little information on this map in RuNet, and not everything was clear on the English forums. I was even more upset when the computer began to reboot, as I later installed — due to overheating.
After a long study, it was possible to find out that the card has a mode switch: for mining and for games. I found this switch and changed its position, after which the card began to give out 19 mega hashes. I realized that the previous mode was already a mining mode.
Next, I learned about the Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition Beta for Blockchain drivers, which allowed me to significantly increase power without going into the card’s BIOS and changing timings. After installing these drivers, the card began to show its 30 mega hashes.
And then I almost sighed calmly, but there was a problem with overheating. For some reason, the standard utilities did not allow forcibly turning on the cooler at higher speeds. Then I made this one through the miner. It was necessary to add -tt -80 to the line with the settings, where 80 is the rotational speed of the coolers as a percentage. As a result, the miner line began to look something like this:

And only after that the card started working normally. The reloads stopped, the hash rate was consistently 29-30 megahash.
I want to note that I managed to set up the driver blockade correctly, only on Windows 10, maybe on Windows 7 I could set them up, but I had already fiddled with the card for six hours and had no desire to continue. As a result, the card now works alone on a used computer with 4 GB DDR2 memory, Chiftek 500 watt power supply. This block no longer pulls. I already bought another 750 watt unit, but for now I’m waiting for the Razers in order to transfer the cards to another motherboard.
Similarly, I installed the blockchain driver on a Sapphire Radeon RX 480 Nitro 8Gb card, which raised the hashrate from 19 to 24 megahash. More cards can not be overclocked yet. MSI Afterburner does not allow any manipulations with memory or other parameters — everything is reset to its original position.
In general, everything can be said. I am happy with the card. Now it is difficult to get such a card even for 500 euros, and given how the exchange rate has dropped and the complexity has grown, the payback period has thus increased significantly.

I decided to completely download the BIOS collection for video cards with different memory and different manufacturers.
Resource from where everything was downloaded: anorak.tech
Each folder contains 4 BIOS files: original, memshift, overclocked, powersave.
Memshift
Memshift modification is the simplest to get more performance/speed with most miners. Memshift versions have modified memory timings to increase memory bandwidth at lower latencies.
What are memory timings and what do they do?
The memory modules on the graphics card operate at a specified clock rate, measured in megahertz (MHz). Where each Herz is a cycle in which the memory has time to do calculations and work. Time measures chip latency by doing calculations and work internally before passing data forward. Therefore, even if the memory chip runs at high clock speeds, the work it does internally is limited due to the delays that are set by the memory timing. A chip running at 2000 MHz with slow timings (large latencies) may perform worse than a 1500 MHz chip with fast timings (short latencies).
When timing does not match the frequency range for a given clock frequency, memory can become a problem, causing memory errors and miscalculations. While memory errors will not harm the hardware, it can cause your mining software to miscalculate, thus in rejected proportions.
Memshift roms are pretty straight forward as they use tighter and faster low clock timings. For example, 1500 MHz clock is used on 1625, 1750 and 2000 MHz. This results in faster data transfer rates from and to the GPU. And so to higher hash rates of mining software.
Because of this, different miners for different coins get different effects, as they more or less use memory for calculations. Ethereum, for example, benefits the most from changing memory timings compared to ZCash.
Overclock
The overclocking versions are almost the same as with overclocking tools like Afterburner or Sapphire TRIXX. These versions come with higher clock speeds for the GPU as well as memory and include memshift. The graphics card gets higher power limits to ensure stable operation at higher clock speeds. To avoid high temperatures, the default fan settings are optimized to work better at higher temps. Be aware that these settings result in louder noise due to higher fan spreads.
Due to higher clock speeds and higher power limits, you must consider higher power draw from the wall and higher temperatures.
The roms provided here are slightly overclocked, you can get better results by determining the maximum clock your card can get. But since all cards perform differently depending on the quality of the chips themselves, I can only use diamonds that operate in a more or less economical clock range.
Be aware that higher clock speeds will wear your graphics cards more and may cause damage!
Powersave
The power saving options are the complete opposite of the overclocked versions. In some cases, you don’t want the best performance, but it’s best to use electric power and the lowest temperatures. The
ROMs provided here come with lower GPU clock speeds and lower power consumption, but still have the memory modification.

What position should the bios switch be in? And what does it affect?
There are unsewn cards and stitched cards — they will fit into one rig.
Question to sew the rest — blockchain — patch. Or roll back to the stock bios sewn and put adrenaline — calculations?
The new PolarisBiosEditor has One Click. automatically selects the timings according to your bios and sets the same from 1500 to 2000. What does it put at all not those that were at 1500, not at 1675, not at 1750 and not at 2000. Overclocking does not hold. Who tried as tests?
