With Intel’s new eight-core, 35-65W Tiger Lake-H processors, Dell is rolling out updates to its most premium workhorses and some of the best ultrabooks, the XPS 15 and XPS 17. The pair will be available sometime this summer, with more exact dates coming soon.

The Dell XPS 15 (9510) will start at $1,199.99 with processor options going up to an 11th Gen Intel Core i9 CPU and an Nvidia GeForce RTTX 3050 Ti graphics card. Dell calls it the «smallest 15.6-inch performance class laptop,» with a 92.9% screen-to-body ratio thanks to a 16:10 display and a new, thinner InfinityEdge bezel. Like the XPS 13, Dell is introducing a 3456 x 2160 OLED screen in the top end.

Dell’s ports are still minimalist, including two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, a headphone jack and a full-size SD card reader.

The new Dell XPS 17 (9710) will start at $1,499.99 and go a step higher with some components. It will go a step further with the processor, topping out at the unlocked Intel Core i9-11980HK with a boost clock of 5.0 GHz, while the GPU will go up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060. Potential customers will have the same storage and RAM options, but there is no OLED screen here — just a 4K touch version and FHD non-touch.

Dell says this is the smallest 17-inch laptop with a screen-to-body ratio of 93.7%. While that’s impressive, there aren’t that many 17-inch non-gaming laptops out there right now.  It has four Thunderbolt 4 ports and a headphone jack, with no SD card reader like its 15-inch counterpart.

On both laptops, Dell is touting quad-speaker designs with Waves NX audio. The company says those speakers were tuned by Jack Joesph Puig, a Grammy-winning producer who has worked with Green Day, U2, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Sum 41 and more.

The smallest in the lineup, the Dell XPS 13 last saw an update in April, when the Tiger Lake U-based system was updated with an OLED display option.

Update, May 12: This article was updated to correct pricing on the Dell XPS 15.

88.4% Dell XPS 15 9510 Review: Multimedia Laptop convinces with new OLED Panel | Notebookcheck
Dell updates its XPS 15 and equips the new 9510 model with Tiger Lake-H processors from Intel as well as new RTX 3050 GPUs from Nvidia. There is also a new option for a 3.5K OLED touchscreen. Is it the best multimedia notebook you can get?

The Dell XPS 15 9510 remains one of the best work laptops on the market today. It’s slim, light for its size, robust and looks fantastic, it’s got loads of processing power, and a great keyboard. Furthermore, you get a vibrant, punchy display that works well indoors or outside, and its battery will see most people through a productive day. It’s a superb work notebook for anyone who wants a sleek, powerful machine, although we’d look elsewhere if you need a machine with perfect colour accuracy, lengthy battery life or loads of ports that aren’t USB-C.

85% Dell XPS 15 Review: Too Hot To Handle
Source: The Verge
That’s why the battery life is so unfortunate. The reality is that people who are buying an XPS 15 know what they’re getting — for years, it’s been a hot, loud, and not-super-long-lasting machine that’s exceptional in every other way. But other companies are rapidly making advances at this size and price range, and even as the XPS’s chassis and screen continue to top the market, that battery life is leaving more of a sour taste in my mouth each year. Its saving grace is that there are not currently a ton of 15-inch laptops with this form factor and price point that will offer you better performance and better battery life. The MacBook Pro 16 does, but it’s a step up in price (and doesn’t run Windows, of course). There are other 15-inchers in the productivity space, but the XPS’s premium build quality is pretty hard to rival. You could go for a well-built gaming laptop like Asus’ ROG Zephyrus G15, but that won’t be suitable to many people seeking a device that looks and feels like an XPS.

60% Dell XPS 15 (late 2021) review: Big screen, not so many thrills
Source: Expert Reviews
None of which makes this latest Dell XPS 15 a terrible product. It’s a well-made machine with a fantastic keyboard and touchpad, a decent blend of high-performance hardware, and a bright, sharp, wide-gamut display. However, for this money, you can definitely do better. You can pick up an Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 with the same CPU, a faster GPU and a bigger SSD for less cash and, if you don’t mind paying more, the 16in MacBook Pro beats it in almost every area. At this level, good isn’t good enough – a laptop needs to be great in every way that matters, and it’s here that the XPS 15 is found lacking.

100% Dell XPS 15 (2021) review: The best just got better
Source: It Pro
The new XPS 15 is one of the most complete laptop packages on the market today. Thanks to the latest silicon from Intel and Nvidia, it’s massively powerful and competent for a machine which is still reasonably slim and light, and the 4K display is genuinely impressive (if a touch power-hungry). Add to that the handsome looks, excellent sound system, high-quality keyboard and accessible chassis, and you have a machine capable of doing just about anything you could ask of it — and getting it done sharpish, to boot. Whether you go for the OLED or 4K IPS model, you’ll still end up with a quite superb machine.

90% Dell XPS 15 OLED (2021) review
Source: Techradar
This year, the Dell XPS 15 is now rocking an RTX 3000 GPU, a much-needed update to a well-deserving laptop. Oh, and it comes with an OLED display option as well. That’s right. The new Dell XPS 15 OLED (2021) is one of the early adopters of OLED technology in laptops. And, what a glorious adaptation it is. It’s a match made in heaven – the Dell XPS line and organic LED technology – and the Dell XPS 15 OLED (2021) is proof. In fact, it might just be the perfect notebook to convince people to jump on the OLED bandwagon: its beautiful thin aluminum chassis is just the ideal vessel for a vibrant 3,456 x 2,160 OLED display with Dolby Vision support. And, it makes the rest of the updates – the Tiger Lake-H chips, RTX 3050/3050 Ti graphics, lighter design – look like mere cherries on an already delicious sundae.

But otherwise, this is one of the best 15-inch laptops on the market. It lacks the hybrid capabilities of the new Surface Laptop Studio, but it outperformed the Surface in my video testing. If you want a powerful 15-inch laptop and don’t mind the shorter battery life, the XPS 15 is well worth considering.

The latest Dell XPS 15 is a spectacular laptop, wrapping up all of the performance you’d want for everyday workflows and even intensive content creation into a svelte, head-turning chassis with a gorgeous OLED display. A well-configured version like our review unit isn’t cheap, but neither does it seem egregiously overpriced. It’s nice to have the options of Core i9 horsepower and colossal memory and storage as well, if you know you can take advantage of them.

Dell XPS 15 9510 (2021) Review
Source: Reviewed.com
The Dell XPS 15 nails the fundamentals of any great laptop. It’s attractive, enjoyable to use, and has a stunning OLED display (in the configuration we tested). These traits make it a superb laptop to use day-to-day for anything from web browsing to photo editing, programming, and 3D rendering. It’s portable, too. The XPS 15 weighs a hair more than four pounds, is just seven-tenths of an inch thick, and is narrow enough to fit in most backpacks and messenger bags with a laptop compartment. The battery can last a full workday if you avoid demanding applications. Performance is where shoppers might pump the brakes. The XPS 15 is fast, but its portability and design compromise some of the performance. Mid-range gaming laptops like the Acer Predator Helios 300 and Lenovo Legion 5 Pro Gen 6 will beat the XPS 15 in both games and demanding productivity apps like Blender or Cinebench. Those who need great performance at a reasonable price should look elsewhere.

90% Dell XPS 15 OLED (2021) review: The ultimate laptop for pros
Source: Laptop Mag
The XPS 15 OLED is the best Windows laptop for power users who need to take their work (or play) on the road. Its attractive design screams luxe, the OLED display is stunning, and the oversized touchpad would impress even a MacBook user. Combine those XPS staples with excellent performance from 11th Gen Intel and Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti chips and it’s easy to recommend this machine to students, business users or content creators, like photographers, videographers or graphics designers. As for the inevitable comparison, the XPS 15 is a better choice than the current 16-inch MacBook Pro, a laptop I wouldn’t suggest to anyone given the imminent launch of a new version with a custom Apple chip. We’ll compare this XPS 15 with the new 16-inch MacBook Pro once it arrives. Until then, those on the market for a portable laptop with a large screen can do no better than the XPS 15.

100% Dell XPS 15 9510 OLED review: big and powerful computing
Source: T3
The Dell XPS 15 9510 offers a lot of features, including cutting-edge processor performance and a bright, clear 15-inch OLED screen that makes your content look great. The step up to the larger screen has some downsides, though. The laptop is much bigger and heavier than the XPS 13, and it is much more expensive – especially with the OLED display and NVidia 3050 Ti GPU. But that’s a reasonable price for such a feature-filled package that puts some real performance in a portable.

All in all, the Dell XPS 15 OLED is a great machine that effectively straddles the line between sleek ultraportable and beefy gaming laptop. I wish the price wasn’t quite so steep, but at least when you shell out the requisite $2k+ to get the OLED upgrade you’re also getting a great Nvidia RTX laptop GPU and a powerful Intel Core i7 CPU packed inside the slim, attractive chassis. Still, if you’re looking for a slick Windows ultraportable with an eye-catching display and enough muscle to play most games at respectable frame rates, the Dell XPS 15 OLED will serve you well.

The Dell XPS 15 continues to be one of the few high-end multimedia laptops that is optionally also offered without a dedicated graphics card. So while those who are looking only for a fast processor should really be at the right place here, Dell also limits the CPU performance unnecessarily.

Comparison of Intel and AMD processors: which is better in 2021. Intel or amd for laptop which is better

Author OScill Reading 10 min Views 353 Published

Which is better Intel or amd for a laptop — A few words about Xeon Sunny Cove vs Zen 2 and Zen 3 ⇡#Conclusions Cheap laptops Performance tests

And yet we believe that a laptop is not chosen solely on the capabilities of the processor. When choosing an ultrabook, it is important to be guided by other characteristics, including the screen and mechanical qualities. And that is why the test results presented in this article are only a guideline. We are confident that you will make the right choice.

Intel Core i7-1165G7 versus AMD Ryzen 7 4800U: choosing the best processor for an ultrabook

The laptop market hasn’t had such competition for a long time. The choice of thin, light, durable and functional laptops is very wide — and they can use both AMD and Intel platforms. At the time of this writing, the Ryzen 7 4800U and Core i7-1165G7 processors were considered the best solutions for such devices. So we decided to fight them face to face.

On our site we publish many reviews of light, thin and compact ultrabooks. It may not be entirely correct to call them that, but users strongly associate laptops with such characteristics with this word. In 2020, we told you about several models that use energy-efficient AMD Ryzen chips: ASUS ZenBook 14 UM433IQ, HP ProBook x360 435 G7, HP ProBook 455 G7, Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 (14ARE05). And here is a list of models with low-voltage Intel Core chips: Acer Swift 3 (SF314-57-735H), ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL, ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA, ASUS ZenBook 14 (UX425JA), Dell XPS 13 9300, MSI Modern 15 (A11SB), MSI Prestige 14 (A10SC). However, it so happened that throughout the year we could not compare laptops with advanced «red» and «blue» chips — Ryzen 7 4800U and Core i7-1165G7, respectively. Well, with the Ryzen 5000U coming soon, we’re fixing that.

The previous paragraph mentions the Ryzen 5000U series for a reason. The Ryzen 4000U family appeared in mobile computers in the middle of last year, and now they already belong to the latest generation solutions. Ryzen 5000U processors, which are about to start appearing in mainstream laptops, could be better than the Ryzen 7 4800U in this case. However, it should be borne in mind that, firstly, the Zen 3 architecture is not used in all Ryzen 5000U models, and a good half of this series is the same previous generation, but with a slight overclocking. And secondly, the integrated graphics in the Ryzen 5000U have not changed at all.

    ⇡#Subject of study

It is important to understand that in this article the emphasis is on comparing the capabilities of the flagship «ultrabook» processors from AMD and Intel. Therefore, you will not find a detailed review of the two used laptops here. And the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 and MSI Prestige 14 Evo models were used.

Obviously, for a relevant comparison of platforms, processors, memory and graphics used in a laptop, you need to take absolutely identical models that use exactly the same cooling system and additional components. But finding such laptops is very difficult, and therefore, when comparing platforms, we have to take into account that we are still dealing with different devices. Nevertheless, we tried to choose two laptops that are as similar as possible. Both models feature only APUs with integrated graphics and fast (by Ultrabook standards) 16GB LPDDR4x-4267 RAM.

Ryzen 7 4800U is the flagship of the Renoir series of chips for small and light laptops based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture — see detailed overview for more information power of 15 watts. Currently, Intel only has six- and four-core chips in near-thermal packages. And the most advanced model, Core i7-1165G7, has only four cores. How many cores does an ultrabook need? Below are screenshots showing the technical characteristics of the compared mobile chips and the main features of laptops.

Model indicator followed by product line suffix and SKU number. This information is important because it indicates the power of the processor.

    Main Differences of

Processors Let’s start by looking at the features and technical differences between devices from Silicon Valley competitors headquartered nearby.

    • Right Pricing — Processors with similar performance cost less than their Intel counterparts. 8-core Intel processors and 12-core AMD processors of the same generation are priced the same.
    • Compact performance coolers for overclocking chips.
    • Free software with auto overclocking.
    • Wide motherboard compatibility (including backward compatibility) with AM4 sockets saves on motherboard purchase.
    • Supports overclocking except for A-series motherboards.
    • Increased PCIe 4 interface speed.
    • Use of solder as a thermal interface.
    • The highest performing models have twice as many cores and threads as Intel.
    • Improved multithreading performance; 3D graphics, modeling and visualization.
    • In many models, each core processes data in two threads.
    • Medium to high performance graphics cores.
    • Lower power consumption for the same workload.
    • Few applications are adapted to the AMD architecture.
    • Models with six or more cores do not have integrated graphics. On the one hand, this has the disadvantage that a video card is required, but on the other hand, the chips generate less heat, and even powerful systems do not have weak graphics.
    • With a load on several cores, the overclocking potential is weak. This illustrates factory overclocking.
    • Frequent crashes in BIOS drivers and firmware.

AMD processors outperform other companies in technology (lithography), but are manufactured at other companies’ manufacturing sites.

    Intel

    • They are the first to introduce new technologies.
    • They work best in single-threaded mode, ideal for video games.
    • High-end motherboards and related cooling solutions are available to provide high overclocking systems.
    • Less demanding on RAM — performance at different RAM frequencies has less differences than AMD.
    • Inexpensive cooling systems with intact fasteners often fail. Standard coolers don’t always dissipate heat well.
    • Premium Z-series motherboards are required to exploit the potential of the chip, as B-series and H-series motherboards do not provide overclocking.
    • The PCIe 3 bus is widely used and is half as fast as PCIe 4.
    • Even more expensive models are cooled with thermal paste, and for some reason only a few use solder.
    • Typically more expensive than competitors’ products.
    • Small and medium graphics cores
    • Sockets are frequently replaced, requiring replacement motherboards when upgrading systems.

Which is better for gaming: Intel and AMD

AMD has closed the gap in gaming performance, but in single-threaded mode it still lags far behind Intel. On the one hand, Intel’s advantage, especially at resolutions above 1080, requires a high-performance graphics card and a gaming monitor. On the other hand, AMD is better suited if the processor is working on other tasks during the game — streaming, converting, rendering, and supporting dozens of applications.

Intel is better for specialized games, but few people use their PC purely for 3D entertainment. In addition, the difference between powerful processors is not so great as to over-invest in single-threaded performance, giving the main role in games to the video card.

According to AIDA64, AMD processors have significantly better memory read performance than their competitors. In this case, the reduction of synchronization at the same frequency is ineffective here.

    Test stands

Therefore, we used the following set of equipment to test Intel processors.

    • Gigabite Z490 Aorus Ultra Motherboard
    • HyperX Fury RAM: 2666 MHz (16-18-18-39), overclocked: 3200 MHz (16-18-18-40)
    • Video card Inno 3D GTX 1080 OC 8G (1961/1251 MHz)
    • Cooler ID-Cooling SE 204K
    • Power Supply Cougar GX-F 750

Testing was carried out both at standard memory frequencies and at slightly overclocked ones; The i5-10600K was also overclocked to 4. 8GHz on all cores (plus the memory controller was overclocked to 4.5GHz).

AMD processors have been tested on the following platforms.

    • Motherboard MSI B450M PRO-M2 MAX
    • HyperX Fury 2666 MHz RAM (14-14-14-32) overclocked to 3200 (16-18-18-40)
    • Video card Inno 3D GTX 1080 OC 8G (1961/1251 MHz)
    • Cooler Aerocool Verkho 5 Dark
    • Power Supply Cougar GX-F 750

AMD processors are easy to overclock even on low-end boards, so we tested both in standard mode (automatic overclocking under load) and in manual overclocking mode.

The same RAM sets were used, but the timings were slightly reduced in standard mode on the AMD platform. This is one of the tested modes from the review of AMD processors (overclocking is no longer possible). All in all, not much is at stake.

I use the following programs to evaluate the main indicators

    Memory speed evaluation utility.

    • Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
    • Assassin’s Creed Origins.
    • World of Tanks.
    • Metro Exodus.

    Processor temperature under load

Processor temperature during the stress test was measured using the OCCT utility, which can create the maximum load on the processor. In reality, this is often not the case.

As you can see, AMD processors are on average hotter than the competition. From the «blue» camp, only the i5-10600K, with its «out of competition» performance, could get hotter.

In addition to temperature, we were also interested in power consumption under load.

The Ryzen 5 2600 performed well here, pushing up to 100W. On average, the Intel processor clearly consumes less power.

Next, let’s move on to performance tests.

I must say that Atom-based computers are suitable for web surfing and watching videos. Intel Atom processors are currently not found. However, these processors are the cheapest.

Which laptop processor to choose: configuration options

    Laptop for work and study

Let’s start with undemanding tasks, such as working with documents in office programs, e-mail, browsing the web in a browser or watching Youtube videos, etc. A laptop with a Celeron, Pentium, or Core i3 processor (in order of need) will suffice for everything. When buying a laptop, make sure that the processor version is up to date, and the system disk capacity is at least 128 GB. The best scenario is to have three laptops with different processors with different office performance, but well equipped.

The Core i5-10400 leads the way here, not too far behind its big brother, the Core i5-10600K. The absolute champion comes out of the «red» camp — Ryzen 3 3300x. The large L3 cache (16 MB) played an important role here.

What is the best processor for a laptop

As a result, the higher the class of the processor and the higher the cost of the finished product, the more users prefer AMD solutions and the more they become completely dominant in the upper segment.

A lot of other information was presented at the event, but this one is perhaps the most interesting. Russia consistently sits in the top class in terms of laptop market share, regardless of segment, and this shows just how strong the impact of the transition to remote work during the pandemic has been.
