The AMD A6-7000 is a Laptop processor with 2 cores, launched in 2014. It is part of the A6 lineup, using the Steamroller architecture with Socket FM2. The core-count is effectively doubled, to 2 threads. A6-7000 has 1. 00MB of L3 cache and operates at 2.2 GHz by default, but can boost up to 3 GHz, depending on the workload. AMD will unveil the Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards with the latest RDNA 3 GPU architecture tonight. Everyone can watch it on the official AMD YouTube channel.

AMD itself describes the upcoming event as follows: « AMD executives will detail AMD’s new high-performance and power-efficient RDNA 3 architecture, which will bring a new level of performance, efficiency and functionality to gamers and content creators

At the moment, very little is known for certain about the upcoming new products. AMD showed the Navi 3X graphics chip back in August, and even then it became known that RDNA 3-based GPUs would consist of several chiplets, similar to AMD central processors. This should reduce the cost, which will positively affect the price of video cards. At least that’s how it should be in theory. The GPU dies, or at least some of them, will be made using the 5nm process technology at TSMC’s manufacturing facilities.

Also earlier, AMD CEO Lisa Su said that the next generation of graphics will provide 50% higher performance per watt compared to current solutions, referring to the Radeon RX 6000 based on the RDNA 2 architecture. AMD representatives also recently announced that video cards won’t get the new (and potentially problematic) 12+4 pin power connector.

The latter is confirmed by a recently leaked photo, which probably captures the reference Radeon RX 79 video card00 XT — it has a pair of 8-pin connectors. The new product is larger than the current flagship in the face of the Radeon RX 6900 XT, but still not as huge as the GeForce RTX 4090 video cards. Note that AMD is rumored to be preparing several video cards on the new generation flagship GPU: Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX. They are rumored to offer up to 24GB of GDDR6 memory and up to 12,288 stream processors. Whether this is so, we will find out in a few hours.

AMD Senior Vice President Sam Naffziger was interviewed by Tom’s Hardware. There, he said that in future generations of graphics cards, AMD intends to primarily pay attention to energy efficiency, but at the same time, it may resort to higher power consumption compared to current graphics cards. It is not mentioned directly, but perhaps we are talking about Radeon RX 7000 video cards based on 5nm RDNA 3 graphics chips.

“The demand for high gaming and computing performance is constantly growing. At the same time, the transition to new technical processes that provide this performance is slowing down, noted Naffziger. Therefore, in order to increase performance, you have to raise power consumption. But, according to an AMD spokesperson, the company has a ton of energy efficiency solutions planned. To strike a balance between performance and consumption. Note that AMD has previously stated that the Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards will provide a 50% increase in performance per watt compared to the current Radeon RX 6000.

« Performance is critical. But even if our solutions are more energy efficient, this does not mean that we will not increase energy consumption when competitors do. On the other hand, they will have to increase power consumption much more than we do » , — said the representative of AMD.

So AMD says that along with improving power efficiency, it can also increase power consumption, but not as much as competitors. First of all, this applies to flagship solutions, since it is more difficult to increase performance there. Future older AMD Radeon graphics cards (not necessarily the RX 7000) will most likely consume more power compared to the Radeon RX 6000. At the same time, it will not be so difficult to ensure consumption lower than that of NVIDIA, because rumors have been circulating on the Web for a long time, that the power consumption level of some GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards based on the Ada Lovelace architecture will be higher than 400 watts.

During the interview, Naffziger did not share any specific details about future AMD graphics cards. It is not yet known whether AMD plans to equip its new accelerators with a large number of power connectors. In the reference version, the Radeon RX 6000 video cards are equipped with one or two 8-pin auxiliary power connectors. Among non-reference versions there are models with three such connectors. The question of whether the Radeon RX 7000 will receive three of these connectors in the reference version or the company decides to use the new 12 + 4-pin PCIe 5.0 power connector is still open. However, the new 12 + 4-pin connector is already being attributed to GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards.

Radeon RX 7000 is expected to be announced this fall. Earlier there were rumors that some GPUs of the new series will consist of several crystals with different technical processes (5 and 6 nm). Naffziger confirmed that AMD’s GPUs will have complex chiplet layouts in the future.
