AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 Review
AMD’s latest Navi GPUs are built using TSMC’s 7nm manufacturing process and because of this they’re significantly smaller than the previous Radeon RX Vega 56 and 64 parts. When compared to Vega 10, Navi packs 18% fewer transistors, but is almost 50% smaller at 251mm2. Whereas Vega 64 featured 64 compute units and Vega 56, 56 compute units, the RX 5700 gets only 36 and the 5700 XT gets 40. However, this is somewhat of a meaningless comparison as the cores used in the Navi GPUs are very different to Vega’s.
The peak single precision performance of the 5700 XT is down 23% compared to Vega 64 — this is a more relevant metric for compute — while the peak pixel fill-rate has been increased by 23%, and that’s what will make the 5700 XT a better gaming GPU.
AMD has also done away with HBM for the new parts and instead they feature 8GB of GDDR6 memory for a bandwidth of 448 GB/s using a 256-bit wide memory bus. This is about the same peak bandwidth of the new competing GeForce RTX 2060 Super and 2070 Super graphics cards.
Initially the Radeon 5700 XT was set to cost $450, but at the last minute AMD dropped that by $50 making it a $400 part (see, the Super effect). Meanwhile the RX 5700 was reduced by $30 ahead of launch taking it from $380 to $350. That’s what a competitive GPU landscape looks like.

AMD is claiming a 225 W board power rating for the 5700 XT and 185 W for the 5700, both lower than Vega 10. As for clock speeds, these can be a little misleading though at least AMD has specified a gaming clock. The boost clock is virtually meaningless as this frequency isn’t achieved beyond the first few seconds of gaming. So the gaming clock is a more accurate metric and we generally saw clock speeds around 50 MHz higher than what AMD claims, at least in our 21 degree test environment, though in more adverse scenarios the fan speed should simply ramp up to maintain clock speeds.
Navi also brings support for PCIe 4.0 which is nice on paper but for these particular GPUs it offers no tangible improvements over the 3.0 spec.
For testing we’ve used an Intel Core i9-9900K clocked at 5 GHz with 32GB of DDR4-3400 memory. The latest drivers available at the time of testing have been used and all this data is fresh for this review and collected in the past two weeks. We have tested 12 games before our usual performance breakdowns and cost per frame data.
Benchmarks
First up we have Battlefield V and right away we have some odd results. The Radeon RX 5700 XT is very impressive rendering 112 fps on average, but we also see an unusually low 1% performance. Whereas the 5700 XT is 11% faster than the RTX 2070 Super for the average frame rate, it was just 1% faster for the 1% low result. Gameplay was smooth and no stuttering was noticed but we’ll have to see if this is something AMD can solve with a future driver or not.
We see the same thing with the standard 5700, although it matched the average frame rate of the 2070 Super, the 1% low result was well below that of the 2060 Super. Overall performance in-game was good, and the better news is this was the only title where we observed this kind of 1% low performance.
Frame rates in Rainbow Six Siege, for example, were very consistent, though here the RX 5700 XT fell short of matching the RTX 2070 Super. It did deliver RTX 2070-like performance and was 5% slower than the Radeon VII.
The RX 5700 was ~9% behind the RTX 2060 Super, though we’re hoping to see more favorable results for AMD in the other games tested.
Now with Metro Exodus though. The margins are quite similar in this game, where the 5700 XT trailed the 2070 Super by an 11% margin, and the 5700 was 6% slower than the 2060 Super.
The Radeon VII was also 17% faster than the 5700 XT, though of course it is a much more expensive product.
Moving on to Resident Evil 2, we see fairly competitive results. The 5700 XT was 5% slower than the RTX 2070 Super while the 5700 was 4% slower than the 2060 Super. Although Nvidia enjoys a performance advantage, particularly after their Super boost, their graphics cards also cost more, so it will be interesting to see how they all compare in the cost per frame analysis at the end of this review.
Next up we have Shadow of the Tomb Raider and here the 5700 and 2060 Super are neck and neck. The 5700 XT didn’t do poorly, but it was 7% slower than the 2070 Super. It also costs 20% less.
Both new RX 5700 graphics cards were able to deliver highly playable performance in Fortnite at 1440p using the maximum image quality settings, but as we’ve said in the past this isn’t a good title for AMD when comparing performance with their GeForce competition. The 5700 XT only managed to match the 2060 Super, which isn’t a great result overall.
Moving on we find a much stronger result for AMD in The Division 2. Granted they don’t brush aside the GeForce competition, but even so the 5700 matched the 2060 Super while the 5700 XT was just 7% slower than the 2070 Super.
DiRT sees a good result for the new RDNA GPUs. The 5700 matches the 2060 Super and the same is true when comparing the 5700 XT and 2070 Super. This is a highly competitive result for the new AMD GPUs.
We bet AMD wish every title was as kind to them as Forza Horizon 4 is, what a shellacking. The standard 5700 easily beats the 2070 Super, leaving the 2060 Super behind in a completely different performance tier. Meanwhile the 5700 XT manages to beat even the Radeon VII, spitting out an incredible 131 fps on average, basically placing it on par with the RTX 2080 Ti.
Although not nearly as amazing, the Far Cry New Dawn results are still favorable for AMD as both 5700 GPUs edged out or at the very least matched the GeForce competition. Given they both cost a little less this is a solid result.
Another stellar result for AMD can be seen in World War Z, where the 5700 and 5700 XT beat their nearest competitor. The 5700 XT even beat the RTX 2080. The standard 5700 was 13% faster than the 2060 Super, though it did only just manage to edge our Vega 56.
The last game in today’s roundup is Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. The 5700 XT was 7% slower than the 2070 Super while the 5700 was 13% slower than the 2060 Super. Not a great result but not too disappointing to end on either.
So with the FPS performance in the bag for a dozen games, let’s move on to check out power consumption.
Power Consumption
Our first graph looks at GPU power exclusively, so not the board power. Interestingly the 5700 XT consumed 6% less power than the RTX 2070 Super and 25% less than the Radeon VII. The standard RX 5700 consumed 27% less power than the XT model and that meant it was much more efficient than even the RTX 2060, so a tremendous result for the base Navi model.
Now when looking at total system consumption, we see a few changes. Now the 5700 XT consumes slightly more power than the 2070 Super which is interesting, it’s not a big change but before it consumed 6% less power in the GPU-only test, now when measuring the entire board plus the system, it consumed 2.5% more power. The 5700 is seen matching the standard 2060 whereas previously it consumed noticeably less power.
Temperature & Overclocking
Out of the box the Radeon RX 5700 XT runs at 84 degrees and maintains a core clock speed of 1740 MHz and a memory speed of 872 MHz which is basically 14 Gbps. The blower fan typically spun at 2100 RPM in our testing.
Overclocking the 5700 XT saw the core peak at just over 1940 MHz but at times would still drop as low as 1720 MHz and on average we saw a clock speed of 1860 MHz, which is a ~10% overclock. The massive fluctuation was due to the almost 90 degree operating temperature, at 88 degrees the GPU tends to throttle and with the fan running at 43% or 2100 RPM, there was room to move. As for the memory, we were only able to get the GDDR6 up to a transfer speed of 14.3 Gbps, so that was a bit disappointing.
With the core clock jumping all over the place we decided to crank the fan up to 100% — where it’s incredibly noisy as it spun at 4600 RPM — in this scenario the GPU peaked at 70 degrees and the 5700 XT was able to maintain a core clock speed of over 2 GHz at all times. That’s about a 20% overclock from stock, I reckon liquid cooling is going to be a popular option for these 5700 XT graphics cards.
As for the standard 5700, out of the box it ran at 75 degrees with a fan speed of 1900 RPM and maintained a typical operating frequency of 1670 MHz. Then when overclocked with the auto fan speed it hit 85 degrees, but the fan was only spinning at 1600 RPM. We can assume this is a bug with the early revision drivers.
For one last test, we cranked the fan speed up to 50% which saw the blower fan spin at 2700 RPM. It got loud but nothing crazy or unbearable. This allowed the 5700 to average a core frequency of 1780 MHz at 70 degrees. Unfortunately, we were unable to push the core any higher as there appears to be a frequency cap at the moment and it’s not clear if AMD will remove it.
Performance Breakdown
Radeon RX 5700 vs. GeForce RTX 2060 Super
First up we have the battle between the RX 5700 and its main competitor, the RTX 2060 Super. From our 12 game sample the Radeon was on average 1% faster, but this is not realistic as the massive win in Forza Horizon 4 skewed the result. If we remove the Forza outlier, the RX 5700 is just 2% slower on average. With that we can say it’s close enough to call a tie and we generally do this when discussing margins below a 5% difference.
We observed competitive performance in DiRT Rally 2, Far Cry New Dawn, The Division 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 2. So it will be interesting to see how these two stack up when it comes to the cost per frame comparison.
Radeon RX 5700 vs. GeForce RTX 2070
When compared to the original RTX 2070 which will soon leave the market, the RX 5700 was 2% slower on average. Again it enjoyed that big Forza Horizon 4 result, but even so it pulled off solid wins in World War Z and Battlefield V.
Radeon RX 5700 vs. Radeon Vega 56
Against Vega 56, the new RX 5700 was 11% faster on average. Not a massive performance uplift after 2 years, but the 5700 is a significantly less complex GPU so AMD will be able to turn a profit selling it, even at $350, so there’s that.
Radeon RX 5700 XT vs. GeForce RTX 2070 Super
Next up we have the 5700 XT and it also does well in its battle with the RTX 2070 Super. It was just 4% slower than the GeForce when we removed the Forza Horizon 4 result.
Radeon RX 5700 XT vs. GeForce RTX 2080
The 5700 XT was also 9% slower than the much more expensive RTX 2080, so you can see why Nvidia feels the need to introduce an RTX 2080 Super. At times the Radeon GPU was up to 20 — 24% slower, but that still makes the 5700 XT a better value option.
Radeon RX 5700 XT vs. Radeon VII
Speaking of value, the 5700 XT, like the 2070 Super, not only eliminates the standard 2080 but it also waves goodbye to the compute-heavy Radeon VII. The newer Navi-based card is 6% slower, so we hope you didn’t recently drop around $700 on a Radeon VII.
Cost per Frame Comparison
First we have an MSRP comparison using launch prices. Compared to Vega 56’s $400 MSRP, the 5700 XT offers a massive 21% discount per frame, while the standard RX 5700 provides a 22% discount, so that’s nice.
It’s also a massive improvement over the Radeon VII and we only got that 5 months ago. At a cost of $6.54 per frame the 5700 XT saves you almost 40% as you’re basically getting the same performance for $300 off, but we won’t pretend like the Radeon VII or RTX 2080 were ever particularly good value, so let’s move on to a comparison with the current market prices.
Even here the RX 5700 and 5700 XT look nice at their adjusted MSRPs. Maybe AMD could have done with the original prices announced a few weeks ago, but evidently they wanted to go for a good value and try to disrupt the otherwise GeForce-dominated market. The new Navi GPUs are more cost effective than the 2060 Super, standard 2060 and GTX 1660 Ti.
The RX 5700 comes in at a rather large 14% discount per frame when compared to the RTX 2060 Super, and the RX 5700 XT is 18% under per frame compared to the 2070 Super. So that’s actually really good.
Closing Thoughts
When we tested the new GeForce Super graphics cards last week, we pointed out the obvious. That was Nvidia’s attempt to steal AMD’s thunder as Navi was about to launch the week after. The RTX 2070 Super is a solid addition no matter what camp you are on, killing off the Radeon VII, RTX 2070 and even the RTX 2080. The 2060 Super wasn’t as exciting as it essentially slotted into the existing pricing structure.
Forcing AMD’s hand to an extent, the company moved to cut pricing which has sparked further interest on what these Navi GPUs can deliver. In terms of performance the RX 5700 can essentially match the RTX 2060 Super, which until a week ago was RTX 2070-like performance — making it slightly faster than Vega 64. For $350, that’s exceptionally good value.
Then we have the RX 5700 XT which finds itself in a sweet spot at $400, coming out at a cost of just $4.00 per frame in our testing, it’s a better value than cheaper products such as the original RTX 2060 and the GTX 1660 Ti. Not to mention you’re getting near 2070 Super performance at a rather hefty discount.
Availability will be key, if AMD is able to stock shelves with $400 5700 XT’s and $350 5700’s, then they will offer the best value at these price points. We’re being told custom AIB models are on the way, too, and if they can boost out of the box performance a little, while bringing about the typical AIB card advantages, then Nvidia might be forced into making a few adjustments of their own and at that point we’ll have a good old fashioned GPU pricing war on our hands.
The reference model cards we tested were relatively quiet and nothing like the Radeon VII. The fans on the 5700 XT only spun up to 2100 RPM after an hour-long stress test and while the GPU was sitting at a little over 80 degrees, that’s ok considering the blower style cooler that is not exactly ideal. The setup is usable and you certainly won’t require the use of earmuffs, again, we’re looking at you Radeon VII.
Bottom line, we like what we see from AMD as they’re finally competitive at the mainstream graphics level, not just in terms of price and sheer performance, but efficiency as well. At the same time, the new Radeons are catching up to Nvidia’s offerings that have been out for about a year — sans-ray tracing which is not very usable in this generation — but at better overall value and price points. We hope a few weeks from now stock levels are good and pricing is at or very close to the MSRP.

AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT vs RX 5700: Which is Faster?
When AMD launched the Radeon RX 5600 XT in Jan, one of the questions gamers had was whether the new GPU was going to replace the RX 5700. Both GPUs are based on the Navi 10 die with an identical core count of 2,304 stream processors. Moreover, post-launch, most OEMs updated the VRAM speed to 14Gbps leaving the bus width as the primary difference between the two. The 5700 has a wider 256-bit bus and an 8GB buffer while the 5600 XT is limited to 6GB across a 192-bit bus similar to the RTX 2060.

At 1080p, the Radeon RX 5600 XT performs within 95% of the RX 5700 in most cases, with the deltas mostly staying in 2-5 FPS range. In Division 2 and Assassins’ Creed, there’s absolutely no difference between the averages of the two cards.

Just have a look at this. Metro Exodus looks way, way better than Borderlands 3 and yet it yields a higher frame rate. The RX 5600 XT performs pretty badly at the Badass preset in Borderlands 3 with drops into the sub-30 FPS zone more than 10 times through the course of the benchmark. As such, it’s absolutely essential to drop the graphics settings down a notch. Considering how the game looks, this is far from acceptable. If a game like Metro that is another league altogether in terms of the visual fidelity runs better, then you can be sure that Gearbox is at fault here.

At QHD, the RX 5600 XT falls below 50 FPS in many games, but the 5700 manages to achieve nearly 60 FPS (on average) across 9 out of 11 games tested.
At 1440p, the Radeon RX 5700 gets to stretch its legs. As I’d suspected, there was indeed a CPU bottleneck at 1080p. At QHD, the RX 5600 XT falls below 50 FPS in many cases, but the 5700 manages to stay achieve nearly 60 FPS (on average) across 9 out of 11 games tested. It’s safe to say that for a smooth 1440p gaming, it’s better to opt for either the RX 5700 or the RTX 2060 Super. We did a comparison for these cards as well:

The same result is reproduced at 1440p. While the RX 5700 performs better than the 5600 XT in both games, Metro Exodus is playable on the latter. However, the same can’t be said for Borderlands 3. There are several FPS drops into the sub-20s in the second half of the benchmark essentially rendering the game unplayable on the 5600 XT.
Conclusion
As you can see, the RX 5600 XT is clearly made for high-end 1080p gaming while the 5700 is better suited for 1440p 60 FPS. While the former can still run most titles at QHD without any problems, you’ll run into VRAM bottlenecks in certain titles. Considering that the RX 5700 costs just ~$40-50 more, it’s a small price to pay for markedly smoother gameplay and a bit of future-proofing.

AMD‘s latest Radeon RX 6700 XT went live last Thursday; and in just a matter of few minutes, they are gone. If you currently own an RX 5700 XT and were wondering whether it was a worth-it upgrade or not, well I think it’s best to hold on to your 5700 XT just yet. Let’s do a quick comparison between the Radeon RX 6700 XT vs the RX 5700 XT graphics cards. You’d be surprised to see that they are quite similar in some way, yet they perform differently. Go ahead and find out below.
AMD’s mid-range Radeon RX 6700 XT is based on TSMC’s 7nm process. The 6700 XT graphics card is powered by a Navi 22 GPU chip featuring AMD’s new RDNA 2.0 architecture. Meanwhile, its predecessor is using a Navi 10 GPU based on RDNA 1.0 architecture; but is also on a 7nm process.
Now here comes the interesting part. Both the Radeon RX 6700 XT and RX 5700 XT has the same number of Stream Processors, which is 2560. They also have the same number of Compute Units, ROPs, and TMUs, which are 40, 64, and 160 respectively.
The Radeon RX 6700 XT does have an advantage when it comes to memory capacity, which is 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM with a clock speed of 16Gbps. However, it has a lower memory bus width and slower bandwidth compared to the RX 5700 XT’s 256-bit memory and 448. Gb/s bandwidth.

So, how do the specs of the RX 6700 XT translate into performance? Jarrod from Jarrod’s Tech recently uploaded a video comparing the new Radeon RX 6700 XT against the older RX 5700 XT. He used AMD’s reference cards, so I think the RX 5700 XT may have a little bit of a disadvantage when it comes to thermals since it’s a blower-type graphics card.
Based on his review comparison, the RX 6700 XT is substantially faster than the RX 5700 XT by up to 25% average in 1080p resolution. Moving up to 1440p resolution, the RX 6700 XT was even faster than the RX 5700 XT by up to 30% average. Of course, the performance difference varies depending on the game titles.
Clock-Per-Clock Comparison Reveals Same Performance
Steve from Hardware Unboxed also uploaded a video on the same day comparing both the RX 6700 XT and RX 5700 XT. But his approach was very different. Instead of just benchmarking both graphics cards and comparing their results directly; he locked the clock speeds of both graphics cards to 1.8GHz. The results were surprising!
Locking both graphics cards’ clock speed to 1.8GHz reveals that the RX 6700 XT and RX 5700 XT performed similarly; and most of the time neck-and-neck with each other. I was quite surprised at first, but if we take a look at both card’s specifications, they do have the same number of Stream processors, Compute Units, ROPs and TMUs. Both are also using a 7nm process.
But thanks to the new RDNA 2.0 architecture and the higher or faster clock speeds of the RX 6700 XT, it was able to outperform the RX 5700 XT by a respectable margin. Notice that both graphics cards have a near-similar total board power as well, 230W vs 2250W. This also tells us that the RX 6700 XT performs not only faster, thanks to higher clock speeds, but was more efficient than its predecessor.
The Radeon RX 6700 XT also has features like ray tracing that is not present on the previous AMD cards. AMD is also planning to release a similar feature to NVIDIA’s DLSS called FidelityFX Super Resolution. But we don’t know yet if this feature will be exclusive to the RX 6000 cards with RDNA 2.0 only.
Pricing and Availability
While the new Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card looks very appealing, unfortunately, supply is still an issue at this time. You are lucky if you got one for $479 (MSRP). But most custom RX 6700 XT from AIB partners are sold for around $620 to $830; a significant mark up. And those are retail prices listed on Newegg; those are not scalper prices. Let’s just hope that the (silicone) shortage will be resolved sooner and hope for the best.

The Nvidia RTX 3070 seems to beat the AMD RX 5700-XT in almost every way, with higher core counts, texture mapping units (TMUs), and more render output pipeline (ROPs). Both graphics cards have similar Vram capacities and types, but the RX 5700-XT beats the RTX 3070 when it comes to clock speeds.

The RX 5700-XT was released by AMD on July 7, 2019, as a replacement for the previous generation RX Vega 56 series GPUs. Overall, it was a massive improvement in every way. AMD’s newer cards are known for being vastly more energy-efficient than their Nvidia counterparts. This is not the case when comparing the RX 5700-XT and RTX 3070. In fact, this is one of the rare instances when the Nvidia GPU is actually the more energy-efficient choice, though not by much.
With a TDP rating of 225 watts, the RX 5700-XT comes in slightly more power-hungry than the RTX 3070, which has a TDP of just 220 watts. Both graphics cards will run fine if you have at least a 550-watt power supply. But you’ll want to make sure that you have the right power connectors, as they each have different requirements. The AMD RX 5700-XT requires one 6-pin and one 8-pin power connector whereas the Nvidia RTX 3070 simply calls for two 6-pin connectors to get power.
Despite being mid-tier graphics cards, both the AMD RX 5700-XT and the Nvidia RTX 3070 are still very large in size, rivaling the dimensions of the much more powerful RTX 3080 series GPUs. This is to be expected since the cooling systems take up most of the space. Even less powerful GPUs still need to be kept cool. The massive heatsinks and cooling fans on both of the graphics cards do an excellent job of keeping their chips at stable temperatures.
If you have a large PC case, you’ll have no problem fitting either one of these cards, though you may struggle if your PC case is not very spacious. The RX 5700-XT measures a little over 10 inches, whereas the RTX 3070 comes in at around 9.5 inches.

In an open bench, the temperature of the GPU under load increased to 65C. The fixed rotation speed of 1770 rpm may seem unreasonably high for an adapter with a three-fan cooler. The fact is that during the start of the rotation of the fans after a pause, the starting speed is slightly higher than typical. During long gaming sessions on an open stand, the rotational speed was on average at the level of 1400 rpm. That is, with increased noise, there are no questions at all.
In the case of a tuned version of the video card from GIGABYTE, the peak frequency of the GPU rose to 1980 MHz, while in games the values often fluctuated between 1935-1950 MHz.
Overclocking
We managed to speed up the video card in the express mode. The adapter allows you to increase the Power Limit parameter up to 111%. After that, the base frequency of the GPU was increased by +110 MHz — from 1605 MHz to 1715 MHz.
At the same time, the average acceleration value also increased by a corresponding amount. Given the initial factory afterburner, in the case of the adapter from GIGABYTE, we are talking about an increase from 1815 MHz to 1925 MHz.
Max GPU boost also increased. The peak value was fixed at 2065 MHz. Often, the actual frequency of the GPU in games fluctuated between 2025-2050 MHz. That is, the real additional increase in frequency under similar conditions is about 100 MHz. The nominal GPU frequencies of the RTX 2070 Super are initially quite high, so you should not expect a big performance boost from additional overclocking of the chip by ~ 5%. However, it is worth noting that memory chips also managed to be accelerated quite well — from 14,000 to 16,000 MHz (+ 11.4%), so bonus fps can still be observed.
AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
The Radeon RX 5700 XT is the top model of the first pair of AMD graphics cards based on the new RDNA (Radeon DNA) GPU architecture. The adapter uses a 7nm Navi 10 XT chip, which includes 2560 calculators. In addition to the increased number of functional blocks compared to the configuration under the RX 5700, the GPU also operates at higher clock frequencies — 1605-1905 MHz.

As in the case of the younger model of the series, the Radeon RX 5700 XT uses GDDR6 memory chips with an effective frequency of 14,000 MHz. A 256-bit memory bus in this configuration allows for a throughput of 448 MB/s. Yes, we are not talking about record figures, as was the case with HBM2, but multilayer memory significantly increases the cost of manufacturing video cards, and therefore is justified only for top-end devices so far. In turn, the release of GDDR6 is already well debugged, and the technical capabilities of the microcircuits make it possible to obtain quite suitable results for this class of video cards.
The Radeon RX 5700 XT has a TDP of 225W, and two additional 12V lines for 6 and 8 pins are required to connect additional power.
Although the Radeon RX 5700/5700 XT were introduced in early June, for the first few months after launch, both models were offered exclusively in the reference dual-slot design.
The reference model uses a vapor chamber cooling system with an aluminum fin cassette cooled by a single centrifugal fan. Such a design is very practical due to the removal of heated air outside the system unit, but in terms of heat removal efficiency, this is still not the best option, and if necessary, generate an air flow of significant power, it is problematic to achieve a low noise level from fans of this type.
Judging by the results of practical tests, the standard cooler is really difficult to cope with the cooling of the Radeon RX 5700 XT. Therefore, it is not surprising that immediately after the deadline, when AMD partners could offer only reference models, all video card manufacturers presented their own video cards with original printed circuit boards and cooling systems. One of these options is participating in today’s testing.
MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X
To evaluate the capabilities of the Radeon RX 5700 XT, we used a graphics card with the original design. MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X is the top model of the series in the manufacturer’s assortment.
The device uses a platform with an enhanced stabilization subsystem, an efficient cooler and standard factory overclocking.
The MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X uses a TwinFrozr 7 cooling system with a very large heatsink unit and a pair of 100mm fans.
The massive aluminum plate cassette is actually a three-slot adapter design. In addition, the length of the video card is also large — 297 mm. These parameters should be considered by owners of compact cases.
For heat distribution, the design uses a set of nickel-plated heat pipes with an additional copper heat sink. The design provides an additional plate-bracket to remove heat from the memory chips. At the same time, the VRM elements are in contact with the main radiator block.
RGB lighting is provided on the top edge of the graphics card. Here the manufacturer also did not become zealous. A relatively small segment with the game series logo is illuminated.
There are two 8-pin connectors for additional power supply, instead of the 8 + 6 combination on the reference design Radeon RX 5700 XT. The manufacturer focuses on the fact that in this case the developers tried to reduce the load on the PCI Express slot, getting more through additional power lines. Despite the reinforced PCB element base and increased operating frequencies, the declared TDP remained at the same level — 225 W, while it is recommended to use a 750 W power supply for the system.
There are four video outputs on the interface panel of the video card — three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0b. A significant part of the plug is perforated to remove heated air. However, given the transverse positioning of the radiator fins, most of the heated air will still remain in the system unit. Therefore, an exhaust fan on the rear panel would be desirable.
The reverse side of the printed circuit board is covered with an aluminum plate. It is noteworthy that in this case, heat-conducting tapes are also used in the area of \u200b\u200bthe memory and GPU chips. A useful initiative is gaining ground. The back panel not only protects the board from mechanical damage, but also takes part in heat removal from heating elements, albeit indirectly.
In operation
The video card supports hybrid cooling mode, so the cooling fans stop at rest.
In this case, the temperature of the GPU on the open bench was kept at 42–43C. The massive radiator block helps a lot here. Curiously, in the case of the reference adapter, the chip temperature was initially 45-50C at a standard fan speed of 600-800 rpm. In one of the versions of the AMD drivers, they increased the base speed to ~1000 rpm in order to reduce unsightly values. Of course, after such measures, we managed to gain a few degrees, but it’s nice when such results can be achieved in silent mode solely due to the efficiency of the radiator unit.
Under load, the GPU heated up to an average of 68-71C. At the same time, the maximum heating point (Hot Spot) is at the level of 94–98C. These are very good numbers for the Radeon RX 5700 XT, especially when you consider that at the peak the fans spin up to about 1500 rpm. In passing, we note that during testing we had a copy of a video card in which the cooling system had already been dismantled, therefore we do not exclude that the initial result could have been even better.
Despite the declared Boost threshold up to 1980 MHz, the peak frequency of the GPU can even exceed the specified threshold. In our case, the GPU-Z utility recorded impulse bursts up to 2040 MHz, but the actual GPU frequency under load in games is still lower — 1850-1950 MHz. However, this is ~100 MHz more than what the reference model Radeon RX 5700 XT offers.
Overclocking
While experimenting with overclocking, we extended the maximum GPU acceleration range to 2100 MHz, leaving the chip voltage under load unchanged (1.2 V). The preliminary limit on the power consumption of the video card was also increased by 30%.
The actual operating frequency of the GPU varies quite widely, depending on the nature of the load. It is not the same even for different game engines. On average, we can say that after additional overclocking, the GPU often worked in the 1950-2050 MHz range. GDDR6 memory chips were accelerated to an effective 14,960 MHz (+6.7%).
In general, the overclocking of the Radeon RX 5700 XT is even more modest than in the case of the GeForce RTX 2070 Super. Obviously, some performance increase can be expected here, but given even a slight increase in operating frequencies, you should not count on much here. The adapter from MSI already initially assumes a starting factory tuning, so the additional afterburner is rather of some academic interest.
Separately, we note the ability of Navi 10 XT chips to operate at frequencies above 2 GHz. While NVIDIA’s 12nm GPUs also break this barrier, it’s a milestone for AMD GPUs.
Face to face
In a visual comparison, the advantage in the dimensions of the video card from MSI (297 × 58 × 140 mm, 1. 4 kg) is obvious, and this despite the fact that the three-fan adapter from GIGABYTE does not initially look like a crumb (287 × 50 × 115 mm, 0.98 kg). The visual compactness of the latter is felt only against the background of an even larger device.
MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X initially claims three expansion slots, although the mounting plate is two-slot. At first it seems that the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GAMING OC 8G does not claim such space, but this impression is deceptive. The video card also blocks access to the third slot. Although it’s not as obvious as with the MSI graphics card, you still have to take into account these layout features.

To evaluate the performance of the GeForce RTX 2070 Super and Radeon RX 5700 graphics cards, we used the results of the previous «GeForce RTX 2060 Super vs. Radeon RX 5700. Both video cards will help us better navigate the positioning of older models.
Starting in the comparison test is the GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB, the entry model that could potentially make the perfect gaming PC. In addition, this time we also included the GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB results. A very popular model among players with ambitions, who at one time tried to go beyond the conventional middle class. It is interesting to assess how this model looks three years after the release against the backdrop of ambitious new products from NVIDIA and AMD. The reverse perspective also matters, allowing the RTX 2070 Super and RX 5700 XT to be viewed through an upgrade lens for those who already feel the lack of performance from previous generation graphics cards.
The top point of reference in our material remains the GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition. This model has slightly increased GPU operating frequencies relative to those for the conditionally basic versions of the RTX 2080. However, this will even benefit us, given the ambitions and positioning of the new NVIDIA and AMD solutions.
Performance 1920×1080
Despite the fact that the video cards used in the review are already somewhat redundant for games with a resolution of 1920×1080, this is still the most popular graphics mode, so the results have a certain practical value.
Already from the first performance measurements in games, a certain advantage of the GeForce RTX 2070 Super over the Radeon RX 5700 XT is visible. The difference in indicators varies predictably, depending on the specific project, but on average the difference is 7-8%.
In general, such a difference, of course, allows us to classify the devices to one class of video cards. However, the Radeon RX 5700 XT is not that far removed from the GeForce RTX 2060 Super. In some games, they are equal, but more often AMD’s solution has a 5-6% advantage. With an identical declared cost, this is still a plus for the Radeon RX 5700 XT. But here it’s hard not to recall the presence of hardware RT-calculators and tensor cores in the NVIDIA solution. There is nothing to cover AMD here yet.
In general, the appearance of the GeForce RXT 2060/2070 Super was a logical reaction to the announcement of the Radeon RX 5700/5700 XT. «Super» versions nominally allowed to keep leadership in their subclasses, albeit at a slightly higher price. Obviously, the classic GeForce RTX 2070/2060 would no longer be able to cope with such a task.
A small factory afterburner of the GeForce RXT 2070 Super still did not allow it to overtake the GeForce RTX 2080 FE. Even if you do not take into account the basic overclocking of the Founders Edition version, the older model has a slight advantage (5-6%), which is generally logical. However, the very possibility of getting almost the same performance at a much lower price is a good reason to think about a rational purchase even in this class.
Replacing a GeForce GTX 1070 with a GeForce RTX 2070 Super gives a performance boost of 35 to 70%. On average — about 53%. One and a half times acceleration in classic rendering and additional goodies in the form of ray tracing, DLSS and VRS. A very good update for a three-year-old model.
Given the very successful start of Borderlands 3, we decided to include a new brainchild of Gearbox Software in the test game set. By the time the project appeared, the list of video cards available for testing was somewhat reduced, but even in this composition, the results are indicative.
When using the standard DirectX 11 API, the GeForce RTX 2070 Super graphics card has a 10% advantage over the Radeon RX 5700 XT. At the same time, when switching to DirectX 12, the situation changes almost to the opposite, and already the model with the new AMD chip has a 5% advantage over its formidable opponent. The Radeon RX 5700 XT gets an extra boost while the RTX 2070 Super scores down. In addition, FidelityFX is available for an AMD video card, with virtually no loss in performance. However, the DirectX 12 mode for Borderlands 3 is still experimental. We hope developers will be able to cope with long downloads and a number of other rough edges when using this API.
Performance 2560×1440
The GeForce RTX 2070 Super and Radeon RX 5700 XT are pretty good at 1440p. Perhaps in some of the heaviest projects you will have to lower the graphics quality settings from maximum to high, but in many current games even the «ultra» mode is available with good fps.
GeForce RTX 2070 Super’s lead over Radeon RX 5700 XT increased by an average of 9%. At the same time, the Radeon RX 5700 XT increased its lead over the GeForce RTX 2060 Super to 7%.
With a resolution of 2560×1440, the difference between graphic generations is even more evident. In a direct comparison between the GeForce GTX 1070 and the GeForce RXT 2070 Super, the latter is on average 60% more productive than the predecessor of the Pascal family. Those who want to comfortably transfer to 1440p and continue to enjoy the game will have to think about upgrading.
Additional overclocking of video cards, although it does not fundamentally improve the performance of video cards, but often allows the Radeon RX 5700 XT to catch up with the GeForce RTX 2070 Super, and the latter, in turn, show results close to those of the GeForce RTX 2080 even in the Founders Edition. A nice bonus, but nothing more.
Power consumption
The compared pair of video cards has similar energy appetites. The thermal package of the GeForce RTX 2070 Super is stated at 215W, while the TDP of the Radeon RX 5700 XT adapters should be within 225W. We tested the original versions of the devices, so we can talk about the power consumption of the platforms only adjusted for the operation of specific models in their standard mode.
Based on power consumption measurements, a system with GIGABYTE’s GeForce RTX 2070 Super used about the same amount of power as the reference GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition. Here, in general, everything is logical, since the video cards are based on the same GPU, and the difference in the number of activated computers is compensated by the increased operating frequency of the processor in the version for the RTX 2070 Super.
MSI’s top-of-the-line Radeon RX 5700 XT system required approximately 40W more power. Obviously, additional overclocking requires an increase in TDP, therefore it is not surprising that the recommended ones indicate a higher power PSU. But in general, the difference is not so significant within this class.
GeForce GTX 1660 demonstrates miracles of energy efficiency, but the performance is often 1.5-2 times lower than that of the participants of the current «versus».
Price
The cost of video cards always plays a very important role, especially when it is not about the ultimate «all-money» models. With the start of sales, NVIDIA announced the recommended price for the GeForce RTX 2070 Super for the US market at $500. At the time of preparation of the material in Ukraine, about two dozen models of this line are offered, and retail prices start from UAH 15,000–16,000. ($600–650).
The reviewed three-fan model GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GAMING OC 8G with factory overclocking costs about $690.
As for the Radeon RX 5700 XT, this video card is priced at $400. However, even at the time of the announcement, the developer focused on the fact that this is the base cost for devices on the reference design. Whereas the original tuned versions can cost more. Stock models of the RX 5700 XT were available in our retail in mid-July. Starting price tags of $ 520-550 for versions with not the quietest impeller seemed somewhat overpriced. By the end of September, references are available for free sale at a price of ~12,000 UAH. ($490).
Given the time constraints on stocks of original models, it’s no surprise that these versions of the Radeon RX 5700 XT are only just beginning to appear on online retailers. The cost of such adapters is noticeably different, and so far it starts at about UAH 13,000 (~$530).
The MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X model used in the test has a retail price of UAH 14,000 (~$570), but it is possible that at the start of sales they will cost more. The first official deliveries of this video card are expected within the next couple of weeks.
Results
After getting acquainted with the GeForce RTX 2070 Super and Radeon RX 5700 XT, both video cards leave a very pleasant impression. As befits a more expensive model, the novelty from NVIDIA has some advantage in classic rendering, and also received hardware support for ray tracing and tensor cores for DLSS implementation. The Radeon RX 5700 XT, on the other hand, is cheaper and offers excellent value for money in currently available games, gains more benefits when moving to DirectX 12, and does not suffer from image sharpening with FidelityFX.
The arrival of the Radeon RX 5700/5700 XT video cards has seriously revitalized the market, forcing the main competitor to act more actively.
