How To Boost FPS On AMD GPUs [2023 Guide]

Do you want to play graphically demanding games without upgrading your hardware? Here’s the guide on how to boost FPS on AMD GPUs.

By Branko Gapo

One of the most graphically demanding games like Far Cry 6, Cyberpunk 2077, Dying Light 2, Metro Exodus, and many others require high-end GPUs like the RX 6950 XT and RTX 3090 Ti.

However, these graphics cards can cost well over $1000, so, naturally, upgrading your PC isn’t always the best option.

So, is there a way you can play these games without paying hundreds of dollars on new hardware? Yes!

Both AMD and NVIDIA have features that can boost your in-game FPS.

In this guide, we’ll go through the various features of an AMD GPU and the Radeon Software to improve your gaming experience.

Let’s do it!

Table of ContentsShow

    Update Your AMD Graphics Driver

The first step to any performance improvement is the GPU driver. New drivers bring game optimizations and features that you might be missing.

Performance improvement with an  AMD GPU driver

    So, let’s do that first.

    1. Head over to AMD’s official support page.
    2. Find your GPU by selecting the appropriate GPU series in the list and then hit Submit.
    3. Select your operating system and download the latest driver.
    4. Once downloaded, run the setup and follow the necessary steps.

And that’s it! You’re now running your GPU on the latest graphics driver, which may improve your performance in certain games. Read the release notes for more information.

Updating the driver also opens up new FPS boosting options with features like RSR and FSR. Let’s see how you can use them.

    AMD Radeon Super Resolution

Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a driver-based upscaling technology that works similarly to FSR, which we will discuss later.

RSR uses AMD’s temporal upscaling technology, which collects data from multiple frames of an image at a lower resolution, upscales it, and then outputs a higher fidelity image.

By enabling this option, your GPU will render the game at a lower resolution, boosting your FPS while maintaining graphical fidelity.

Performance uplift from RSR – Source: AMD

Note that RSR can only be used on RX 5000 and RX 6000 GPUs, but they can be used on any video game.

Here’s how you can enable it:

    1. Right-click your desktop and click on AMD Radeon Settings. Or open the tray menu and double-click the Radeon Software icon.
    2. With Radeon Software now open, click on the cogwheel icon (top-right).
    3. Select the Graphics tab.
    4. Click on Custom and then enable Radeon Super Resolution.

RSR is now active, but to use it there’s one more thing you will need to do. Start any game, head into its graphics settings, and lower the resolution. After that, RSR will take over and upscale the in-game image to your native resolution.

Keep in mind that you can adjust the sharpening effect at any time.

    AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution

FidelityFX Super Resolution or just FSR is AMD’s superior upscaling technology. This one is individually updated into games, unlike RSR, which is driver based.

The advantage to FSR is that it can be used on any graphics card, including NVIDIA GTX and RTX SKUs. It also offers better image quality than RSR and does not apply the upscaling to the HUD and the game’s post-processing effects.

However, you cannot use/enable this feature for all games. The feature must be implemented in the game by the developers (or modders.) Fortunately, the list of games supporting FSR is pretty extensive and will get longer over time.

To enable FSR, you will need to find it in the game’s settings.

FSR 1.0 in Far Cry 6

Usually, you can find this option under graphics settings.

Note the FSR Mode option in the image above. This setting determines the level of image quality and FPS boost. Ultra Quality mode will give you the best image quality and the lowest performance increase.

Performance mode will give you the most significant boost in FPS, but you will notice a significant drop in image quality.

Test it and see which one works best for you!

    Smart Access Memory

Smart Access Memory (SAM) or Resizable Bar is a feature that can boost FPS but is only available to computers that have paired a Ryzen 5000 or 3000 CPU with a Radeon RX 6000 or RX 5000 series GPU.

So, if you have an Intel CPU, an NVIDIA GPU, or an AMD GPU older than the RX 5000 series, this does not apply to you.

Enabling this is a little bit more complicated since you will need to access your system’s BIOS. The BIOS has options that could hinder your system’s performance or even damage it.

We’ll guide you through it to ensure you do everything right. If you don’t feel comfortable going through these settings, leave Smart Access Memory off.

Here’s what you will need to do.

    1. Turn off your computer.
    2. Turn on your computer and use the Delete, F10, or F12 key to enter the system’s BIOS.
    3. Look for the options called “Re-Size BAR Support” and “Above 4G Decoding,” which you can usually find under Advanced Settings or Advanced menu. Different motherboards will have different BIOS styles.

Once you enable both options, save your changes and reboot your PC.

Next, open Radeon Software, head over to the Performance tab, and check if Smart Access Memory is enabled.

    That’s it!

With SAM enabled, you can expect up to a 17% FPS boost in certain video game titles. But a 5% performance loss in other titles is possible.

    Here’s what you can expect:

    Chart by Hardware Unboxed

    Conclusion

While nothing compares to the performance of a better and faster GPU, these AMD features can seriously improve your gaming experience.

FSR alone can give you a 2x boost in FPS, especially if you are running 4K natively. You can also get a considerable boost in FPS by combining SAM and AMD RSR.

How to increase FPS by 25% without worsening the graphics. On the example of GTA V — Hardware on DTF

A small life hack for those who want to increase the number of frames in the game. Who this method is suitable for:
    1. You want to increase FPS without lowering the graphics settings in the game
    2. You want to increase FPS, but there is simply nowhere to lower the settings
    3. You are a little lacking in power up to 4K, but you are a perfectionist and cannot tolerate nothing but Ultra (why Mr Anderson?)

    66080
    views

This method is universal in that it suits both owners of old, not the most powerful video cards, and those who aim at 4K. The latter, by the way, even more. We will talk about reducing the resolution of the internal rendering of the picture in the game. In general, there are 2 ways to implement this method:

    1) Clumsy method. Banal resolution change (for example: 1920×1080 -> 1280×720). But there are some unpleasant side effects: the game interface suffers, the picture lathers and a lot of aliasing (ladders) appears.

    2) In-engine methods (internal rendering changes). There are many modern games (Battlefield, Apex Legends, Dota, GTA V, etc. ) The disadvantages remain: soap, a lot of ladders. The only plus is that the interface remains clear, because it is rendered in the monitor’s native resolution.

The method that I will describe is used, for example, by the developers of Wolfenstein. It’s about changing the horizontal resolution. Suppose you have a 1920×1080 monitor and you lower the resolution by 25% using the built-in methods:

    Some math:
    1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 (2.07 million pixels) — original resolution
    2,073,600 x 0.75 = 1,555,200 (1.55 million pixels) — actual rendering resolution. Difference ~ 25%

    From left to right: 1 — native 1080p, 2 — 0.75% resolution

Here are the sources: native 1080 vs upscale. What artifacts we get:

Reducing the resolution by only 25%, we get: 25% increase in FPS (39 -> 50), a lot of little ladders!

Now my method (instruction will be below): we will use a resolution of 1440×1080. Let’s calculate: 1440 x 1080 = 1,555,200 (1. 55 million pixels). Similar to reducing the resolution in the game itself — all the same ~ 25%. But the result is drastically different:

From left to right: 1 — changing the rendering in the game, 2 — my method

Sources: upscale vs my method. Comparison in detail:

    Final result comparison (1 — native 1080p, 2 — 0.75% upscale via game engine, 3 — my method):

What we have as a result:
    1. Native resolution (39 FPS) — cool, but can be expensive if you have a weak GPU or you aim at 1440p and higher.
    2. Upscale through the engine (50 FPS) — soap, a lot of aliasing, the worst option. If you have a 1080 monitor or lower, I strongly advise against it. If higher, you can already use it.
    3. «My» method (48 FPS). Decrease the horizontal resolution by 25% without changing the vertical resolution. As a result, even on a 1080 monitor, the difference is almost invisible. Almost complete absence of artifacts in the form of ladders and soap. When playing, it feels almost like native 1080p.

Important: 25% increase will be only if the performance depends on the GPU. Otherwise, the result may and will be different!

    How to do?

Nothing complicated, I’ll show you on the example of Nvidia:

How to calculate? Multiply the horizontal resolution by 0.75. For example, you have 3840×2160. 3840 x 0.75 = 2880 pixels. We expose in the control panel 2880×2160.

In fact, we get a resolution with an aspect ratio of 4:3, so in the game itself, do not forget to stretch it to 16:9, otherwise it will look like this:

I haven’t seen anything like this in any more or less popular FPS guide. I hope I was able to help at least someone. Especially those who are on a weak iron. Arevoir!

    Additional computer settings

Do you want to know how to speed up Dota 2, in addition to game settings? The FPS of the game can be increased through the properties of the computer.

    NVIDIA Performance Mode

You can improve performance through the NVIDIA GeForce Experience application. It automatically sets the optimal settings based on your PC configuration. No special knowledge is required, just install the application, click «Start Dating» and the optimization will be performed without your participation.

For the future, you can select «Automatically optimize recently added games».

    NVIDIA GeForce Experience

    Increase paging file

All active applications reside in PC RAM. When it ends, the swap file is used. To increase resources under Dota, you need to do the following:

    • Open «Start» and find «Tuning system view and performance» there.
    • In the «Advanced» tab, in the «Virtual Memory» section, click «Change».
    • Uncheck automatic paging file size selection.
    • In the list, select the system drive from the list and click «Specify Size».
    • Fill in the «Initial size» (at least 400 MB) and «Maximum size» (insert the desired value here).
    • Click «Set» and then «OK».

    Increase the paging file

    Disable Windows effects

Another good way. In the properties of the computer, go to «Advanced system settings». In the «Advanced» tab, click on the «Options» item. Next, in the «Windows» settings, go to «Personalization».

    Go to personalization

Here you can turn off all effects, or only a part that is not needed at all. For example, it makes sense to leave «Smooth jaggedness in screen fonts», as well as «Output thumbnails instead of icons».

    Disable anti-aliasing

This will require third-party graphics card tuning programs: NVIDIA Inspector (for NVIDIA) or RadeonMod (for AMD). Run the application and in «Profiles:» select Dota2.

All available settings will open. To further worsen the graphics on a weak PC, you need to go to the “Antialiasing” section and, first of all, change the following two parameters:

    • Texture filtering — LOD bias;
    • Antialiasing — Transparency Supersampling.

Experiment with their values to keep Dota playable.

    NVIDIA Inspector

Cleaning your computer from junk using Computer Accelerator

You can also increase system performance, which will also have a positive effect on game speed. To do this, you need to install the Computer Accelerator program and follow these steps:

    • Freeing up disk space. The program searches for duplicates, large files, unused applications.
