Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 Vapor-X 2GB review

Manufacturer:Sapphire
UK Price (as reviewed):£181.53 (inc. VAT)
US Price (as reviewed):$249.99 (ex TAX)

There might be a recession on but there are still some great graphics bargains out there. Radeon HD 4870 1GBs are now available for about £100 and 1GB versions of AMD’s flagship single-core graphics card, the HD 4890, can be picked up for less than £130. While it might not handle our Crysis tests in DirectX 10 above 1,280 x 1,024, the HD 4890 1GB is more than a match for all our other benchmarks even at 2,560 x 1,600.

With DirectX 11 cards due before Christmas, the next few months should see prices reduced even further but if you’re in the market for a new graphics now, then bit-tech is at hand to see whether Sapphire’s Radeon HD 4890 Vapor-X 2GB is worthy of your cash. When we looked at Sapphire’s Radeon HD 4870 Vapor-X 2GB, we were impressed with the Vapor-X cooler which managed to keep the GPU a massive 11°C cooler than the stock HD 4870 cooler.

However, its price and the fact that running cooler didn’t yield any overclocks that were more impression than other HD 4870 cards meant value was its Achilles heel. At £181, this new card is already £50 the wrong side of a standard HD 4890 so those value demons are present and correct already.

This time round, Sapphire has overclocked the core speed from 850MHz to 870MHz and the memory from 975MHz (3.9GHz effective) to 1,050MHz (4.2GHz effective) so in addition to the Vapor-X cooler, you’re also getting a faster graphics card. True, speed-wise it’s a far cry from the 1,000MHz core speed of the Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 1GB Atomic but the Atomic retails for well over £200, so the game is far from over for the Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 Vapor-X 2GB. As we can see you shouldn’t need any adapters to connect the Sapphire to your display as it has D-Sub, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. There’s also a copy of Cyberlink’s PowerDVD and DVD Suit along with 3DMark Vantage as well as sundry PCI-E to molex and DVI to HDMI adapters in the box.

Top down, there’s plenty to be seen with the large copper core of the vapor chamber visible beneath the heatsink and fan. Of course the extra bank of GDDR5 has to be situated on the other side of the PCB to the core. As this gets pretty damn hot, it’s good to see Sapphire have included some fairly hefty heatsinks here. During our benchmarks these got almost too hot to touch and that’s in an Antec Twelve Hundred case. The only issue here is installing expansion cards above the Sapphire as the RAM sinks will either get extremely close or actually interfere with them.

With the cooler removed by unscrewing four sprung screws on the opposite side of the PCB, it’s much easier to take a peek at the vapour chamber which utilises the same technology as heatpipes. Liquid inside the chamber evaporates above the core and condenses on a cooler section transferring heat around the heatsink more rapidly than a solid copper block in theory. While there is a vent at the rear of the cooler, the heatsink spills air at all angles out the sides of the fins so a majority of heat will find it’s way back into the case.

Warranty

The Sapphire comes complete with a two-year warranty that includes cover for parts and labour. During the first year of the product’s life, your point of contact should be the retailer. However, if you’re having problems getting hold of the retailer (or the retailer goes out of business), you should contact Sapphire’s support team directly. During the second year of the warranty period, you should talk directly with Sapphire. This is pretty much in line with what other ATI board partners offer, and while the two year warranty is more than you’re legally entitled too, it isn’t as comprehensive or as long lasting as what’s available from some of Nvidia’s board partners.

Introduction

We saw Sapphire really mix it up recently with the HD 4890 ATOMIC version of the card. The company hasn’t stopped there, though, now choosing to do even more with the model. ATI partners really don’t have the range of graphics cards to play with like NVIDIA ones. What this means is that we tend to see companies offer more variants of the same model.

The HD 4890 has always been a pretty impressive card. While it was never the holder of the performance crown, it did manage to offer some serious value for money and for so many people this is more important than a super fast card that they can’t afford.

The main feature to the HD 4890 we’re looking at today is the extra memory which brings the card to 2GB. We’ve never been a huge believer of such huge memory amounts on graphics cards; there tends to be a point where performance flattens out. With that said, though, we’ll find out what else Sapphire is able to offer us with the HD 4890 2GB Vapor-X today.

The Package

In typical Sapphire fashion we’ve got some pretty nice box art on hand that gives us all the information we need. Across the top of the box we have the Sapphire logo along with some ATI ones. Here we also see that the card comes with 2GB of GDDR5. Across the bottom of the box we can clearly see the model.

In the middle of the box we’ve got a bit of an ice scenario going on with mention about the Vapor-X technology that is embedded into the card. Across the right of the box we have some of the main details like HDMI, CrossFire-X, GDDR5 and a few other features. Just below this we have mention of some software that’s included.

Turning the box over, we’ve got the same top and bottom that is seen on the front of the box. In the middle we have some more information on the technology that is implemented into the graphics card, while also seeing a few of the many awards the company has won.

Opening up the box and diving inside, we’ve got our user manual along with a little Sapphire sticker. As far as software goes we’ve got a full version copy of 3DMark Vantage with key, driver CD, PowerDVD and the CyberLink DVD Suite which packs a few programs as well.

The cable department is a little lighter with not much going on. Included is a molex to 6-pin connector and molex to 8-pin connector. We’ve also got a HDMI to DVI dongle and a single CrossFire connector.

The Card

With the package out of the way it’s time to have a look at the card itself and you can clearly see the first major feature of the card is the company’s choice to move away from the stock cooler that we see on so many other HD 4890 cards. We’ve got a new design here that we haven’t seen before and it certainly does a pretty good job of looking mean.

To the right we have a heatsink that sits atop some of the hotter components. Next to that we have a few more heatsinks, while the rest of the card is taken up with a large heatsink/fan. As good as the cooler looks, though, it will be interesting to see how it performs in the noise and temperature departments.

Due to the extra amount of memory here, Sapphire has had to place memory on the back of the card. Instead of just leaving that bare, they have decided to add a heatsink to them. While common a few years ago, due to higher density modules we rarely see modules on the back of the card, let alone heatsinks to cool them.

Going for a quick spin around the card, there isn’t anything out of the ordinary. We have two power connectors at the back of the card; one’s a 6-pin while the other’s an 8-pin.

Closer to the front of the card we have our two CrossFire connectors which let us put up to three of these cards together.

Looking at the last bit of the card, we have the I/O ports. It’s nice to see that Sapphire has put a bit of effort in here to make the card stand out. While we have out standard Dual-Link DVI connector, we also have a VGA port under that. Sitting to the left we have a native HDMI port and over further again we have a display port connector.

Specifications

Sapphire has taken the time to overclock the Vapor-X variant of the HD 4890 we have here today. We can see the company has moved from the stock 850MHz core to 870MHz. We can also see that the memory has been moved from the default 975MHz or 3900MHz QDR to a more aggressive 1050MHz or 4200MHz QDR.

While not as aggressive as the ATOMIC version of the card we looked at the other week which carries with it a 1000MHz core, this bump in performance should still yield a nice little performance increase over a stock clocked model.

Temperature and Sound Tests

Temperature Tests

With the TES 1326 Infrared Thermometer literally in hand we found ourselves getting real-world temperatures from the products we test at load (3D clock speeds).

There are two places we pull temperature from — the back of the card directly behind the core and if the card is dual slot and has an exhaust point we also pull a temperate from there, as seen in the picture.

While the Vapor-X cooler does run the card slightly higher in temps, it’s nothing to worry about.

Sound Tests

Pulling out the TES 1350A Sound Level Meter we find ourselves quickly yelling into the top of it to see how loud we can be.

After five minutes of that we get a bit more serious and place the device two CM away from the fan on the card to find the maximum noise level of the card when idle (2D mode) and in load (3D mode).

The good news is that it’s consistently quieter than a reference cooler which for some people is going to be more important.

Power Consumption Tests

Using our new PROVA Power Analyzer WM-01 or «Power Thingy» as it has become quickly known as to our readers, we are now able to find out what kind of power is being used by our test system and the associated graphics cards installed. Keep in mind; it tests the complete system (minus LCD monitor, which is plugged directly into AC wall socket).

There are a few important notes to remember though; while our maximum power is taken in 3DMark06 at the same exact point, we have seen in particular tests the power being drawn as much as 10% more. We test at the exact same stage every time; therefore tests should be very consistent and accurate.

The other thing to remember is that our test system is bare minimum — only a 7,200RPM SATA-II single hard drive is used without CD ROM or many cooling fans.

So while the system might draw 400 watts in our test system, placing it into your own PC with a number of other items, the draw is going to be higher.

Power draw on the 2GB card is a fair bit up to the reference model. Like the temps, though, it’s nothing too worrying.

Final Thoughts

The first thing we have to say is that there’s a solid performance increase across the board when it comes to the Sapphire HD 4890 2GB Vapor-X. We can honestly say that most of that gain would come from the increased overclock more so than the extra memory.

Does that make it a waste of money? Not really; the Vapor-X offers more than just some extra memory. For around $250 U.S. Dollars you’re getting a new cooler which while it doesn’t cool quite as well as the stock one, does a good job of dropping noise levels. You’ve also got a bump in core and memory clock.

If you want 2GB of memory on a graphics card and don’t want to break the bank, the Sapphire Vapor-X model we have here today is pretty impressive. The good news is that if you’re not interested in spending the extra money that the 2GB card carries, Newegg also offers a 1GB version for $219. 99.

We’ve got a solid card here that’s going to be a good option for some people. If the bundle, cooling and overclock wasn’t enough to get you excited, the decision to implement display port and HDMI natively to the card could be the deal clincher.

Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 Vapor-X 2GB – Techgage

With ATI’s launch of the high-end Radeon HD 4890 card happening just last month, it may seem a little odd that we’re taking a look at the older HD 4870 card now, but for the most part, it’s not. The HD 4890 is still priced comfortably above the HD 4870, by about $40 on average, and even though the HD 4780 came out about ten months ago, it still has the brawn needed to power all of today’s games with relative ease.

One common thing to be said in most of our GPU content is that the best time to buy a GPU is now, and that’s been the case for a while. It used to be that you’d have to unload your wallet to get a decent graphics card, but nowadays, most people will be happy with a $150 offering, especially if they’re running a resolution of 1680×1050 or lower. Really, the best bang for the buck is with any current GPU offering. It’s hard to go wrong.

The best thing about the current state of graphics cards is that there’s a price-range to suit every taste possible. For budget gamers, there are numerous models under $100, and in some cases, well under $100, and then we have cards at $125, $150, $175 and upwards. The good thing is that most scale well with their price, so any card you pick up should give you exactly what you paid for.

Closer Look

The HD 4870 we’re taking a look at here isn’t just a quick release, but rather features a unique “Vapor-X” air cooler that’s been designed from the ground up to deliver the best cooling performance with the lowest noise, and after having dealt with the card, we can say there is a vast improvement between this and a reference card (so, no more sporadic 100% fan speedups!). But before we take a look at the card itself, let’s review the current state of ATI’s line-up:

ATI’s most attractive mid-range offerings are the HD 4850 (~$150), HD 4870 (~$180) and also the HD 4890 (~$230). All prices quoted are after mail-in rebate, but it’s hard to find such a card nowadays that doesn’t have one. As mentioned above, each of these cards scale well on a $/performance ratio, so you’ll get your money’s worth regardless of which one you wind up with.

The HD 4870 proves to be one of the overall best choices for gamers right now, especially for those who crave anti-aliasing. It offers a sweet blend of high clocks, lots of memory and most importantly, an under-$200 price tag. But before we go further, I have to point out that the card we’re looking at here is a little unique, because it features 2GB of GDDR5 rather than 1GB. What will that premium cost you? About $45 over the 1GB model. Ouch.

Even without testing the 1GB model, I can honestly say that you should save your money and stick with the much more affordable 1GB card, because let’s face it, for the price of the 2GB, you might as well get yourself hooked up with an HD 4890 1GB. From a gamer perspective, that just makes much more sense. Plus, from the HD 4870 standpoint, this is a GPU that’s unlikely to take advantage of 1GB+ in any title, so just skip it. That’s not to say we won’t have a need for 2GB in the future, but chances are good it will be put to better use on higher-end models, that can both handle higher resolutions and higher anti-aliasing modes.

That said, the 1GB version of this card falls in line with the others, to sit around $200 ($180 after MIR), while the 2GB model, is as I mentioned, $45 more to sit at $245.

As you can see in the photo below, the cooler for the most part looks rather generic, but underneath is a massive copper base that covers the entire area of the GPU core socket, allowing for fantastic coverage. On top of this copper base is a typical finned heatsink designed to dissipate heat quickly, while the fan’s job is to blow the hot air towards the back.

The entire cooler is shrouded to prevent the hot air from escaping and getting into the main chassis, and the overall design directs it towards the back, to escape through the back of the case. Taking a look at the below photo, you can see that the opposite end of this shroud is covered.

Also on this side, you can spot the two PCI-E power connectors, and also the somewhat large Sapphire-branded heatsink that sits atop some of the card’s MOSFETs. This heatsink is passively-cooled. Finally, on the back you can see yet another heatsink which covers the card’s GDDR5 in its entirety.

Although not pictured, this card features three connectivity options: 1x VGA, 1x DVI and 1x HDMI, so all of the current bases are covered. Overall, I like the design of this card, not really for its looks, but for the thought that went into it. This cooler isn’t designed to see the best possible temps, but rather its goal is to see the best possible temps while keeping quiet, and that’s something we’ll test out shortly.

Death to crooked assassins. That’s right Nitroxenus says I won’t buy this piece of unoptimized feces in my life. I’m sure it will be quite possible to play on the 6300, but there are no pirates, and it makes no sense to buy unoptimized shit with keys.

In the past there was 7750 here the main thing is not to confuse and not buy a «weak» version, I will explain, I was looking for it with ddr5 memory. then yes, you can play on it if someone with ddr3 memory is a complete slag. In fact, if you play only tanks or old games, then 7750 will do, although it’s better to look for 7770. But against the backdrop of prices for the same 1030 from Geforce, the purchase is not the best.

I have a Radion 7870 from «Gigabyte». AMD FX-6350 processor. Ram 8gb. So far, I’m lucky to play some modern games at decent settings (that is, games before 2016)). Haven’t played more recent ones except for the last one. Has taken a great interest in online (unfortunately). I did not indulge in overclocking on this assembly. — Good review!

ATI launched the Radeon HD 4890 on April 2, 2009 at a suggested price of $249. This is a desktop video card based on the TeraScale architecture and 55 nm manufacturing process, primarily designed for office use. It has 1 GB of GDDR5 memory at a frequency of 3.9GHz, and coupled with a 256-bit interface, this creates a throughput of 124. 8 Gb / s.

In terms of compatibility, this is a dual-slot PCIe 2.0 x16 card. The length of the reference version is 241 mm. The connection requires two 6-pin additional power cables, and the power consumption is 190 watts.

It delivers poor benchmark and gaming performance of 1.69% of the leader, which is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 SLI (mobile).

On June 25, 2008, AMD announced graphics cards based on the new AMD RV770 GPU. Initially, the graphics accelerators Radeon HD4850 and HD4870 with 512 MB were presented to the public, and a month later the Radeon HD4870 arrived in time with a gigabyte of video memory on board. On August 12, 2008, the line was replenished with a dual-processor solution Radeon HD4870 X2. A little later, the Radeon HD4850 X2 card was officially presented, however, it did not gain much popularity and found its embodiment in hardware only thanks to the efforts of Sapphire. October 23, 2008 saw the release of the Radeon HD4830, which occupied the lowest step in the hierarchy of accelerators based on the RV770 GPU. And here is April 2, 2009The 4800s have a new flagship, the Radeon HD4890.

Specifications for the above boards and their graphics chips are shown in the table:

  • Club3D Radeon HD4890 1GB GDDR5 graphics card, hereafter referred to as HD4890 1GB, is based on PCB reference design. Its length coincides with that of the Radeon HD4870 and is 250 mm, but there is no complete similarity — changes in the GPU led to the processing of the PCB. However, the differences from the well-established reference Radeon HD4870 are small. In particular, the power supply system of the video card has been strengthened. The converter formula used on the 4870s 3(4)+2 (3-phase stabilizer for the GPU, expandable to 4 plus 2 for the memory) has changed to 5+2. A perfectly reasonable action, since the power consumption of the HD4890 grew to 190W, while the HD4870 fit into the 160W frame.

    Club3D Radeon HD4870 1GB GDDR5

    Club3D Radeon HD4890 1GB GDDR5

Club3D Radeon HD4890 1GB based on ATI/AMD RV790 GPU (Radeon HD4870 -). The number of transistors is about 959 million pieces. The graphics processor is manufactured using 55 nm technology, the die area is 282 mm2, which is 10% more than the area of RV770 (256 mm2), although the number of transistors has increased by only 3 million, i.e.

0.3%. (RV770 — 256 mm2, G200b — 470 mm2). The new GPU design is more difficult to manufacture and the production cost of the RV790 has increased slightly. The equipment of the new video processor is the same — 800 (160 VP5) scalar unified shader processors, 40 texturing units (TMU), 16 rasterization units (ROP).

All core blocks run at the base GPU frequency of 850MHz, which is fully consistent with the official specification.

The video card is equipped with memory from the now distressed company Qimonda. Type — GDDR5, volume — 1 GB. Chip access time is 1 ns, which promises overclocking potential up to 4 GHz, but by default it operates at 3900 (4×975) MHz. The access bus is 256-bit, which at a frequency of 3900 MHz gives a total throughput of 125.0 GB / s.

Radeon HD4890 video cards have frequency separation into 2D and 3D modes.

HD4890 video cards have learned how to significantly reduce the chip frequency in 2D, which reduces the heat generation of the chip and the noise of the cooling system. Memory has no such ability. Apparently, the manufacturer decided that such meager savings are not worth the effort spent on reprogramming. In addition, the immutability of the operating conditions of the memory should ensure its greater stability.

The power consumption level of the Radeon HD4890 has increased to 190 W (let me remind you that for a Radeon HD4870 with a gigabyte of video memory it could reach 160 W). To meet increased demands, two 6-pin auxiliary power connectors are sufficient. In addition, instead of a single 6-pin connector, an 8-pin with a significantly higher power rating (150 W instead of 75 W) can be installed, but only a couple of manufacturers equipped their Radeon HD4890 OC solutions with it.

As a result, in 2D the temperature is RV790 is

59 degrees, and in 3D it stayed at

74 degrees after running the Firefly Forest test from the 3Dmark2006 package 10 times. Testing was carried out at a resolution of 1920×1200 with AF16x.

A detailed description of the cooling system installed on the board can be found in the previously published material.

The increase in CO noise had to be paid for lowering the temperature of the video chip. If in 2D mode the fan worked at 25% and the noise from the HD489 cooling system0 is quite comfortable, and, subjectively, does not exceed that of the reference HD4870 1GB and GeForce GTX260 Core 216. But with boards based on the RV790 GPU, the cooler speed rises to 35% when switching to 3D, the noise noticeably increases. Subjectively, only the Radeon HD4870 X2 cooler makes more noise than the HD4890 CO.

Club3D Radeon HD4890 1GB was overclocked using Riva Tuner 2.24 (RT). The utility has full support for ATI/AMD video cards based on RV770 GPUs, both in single and CrossFireX configurations, allowing you to change GPU/Mem frequencies, monitor temperature, and control cooler rotation speed. But with boards based on RV790 program in the basic configuration is not familiar. However, this “flaw” can be corrected in a few minutes. To do this, you need to download a small cfg file, unpack and replace it in the folder where RT is installed. In principle, you can enter support for RV790 yourself. To do this, open RivaTuner.cfg in notepad, find the line related to RV770 and add «,9460h» without quotes at the end. You should get: «RV770 = 9440h-9442h,944Ch, 9460h». After the changes have been made, close the editor with saving the changes and restart RT 2.24. The only disadvantage of «initiating by hand» is that the program incorrectly recognizes the graphics processor, giving it the name RV770. All other RT instruments from 4890-mi after making edits work correctly.

HD4890 1GB from its nominal frequencies 850/3900 was overclocked to 973/4408 , which is + 11.4% and 13% of the frequency increase relative to the nominal for the GPU and memory, respectively.

During overclocking, the GPU of the video card warmed up to 77 degrees after running the Firefly Forest test 10 times. For the increased frequencies, I had to pay with my ears — the turbine increased the rotation speed from 35 to 38 percent of the maximum.

    * Please note that only one video card was tested and based on such a small sample it is not worth evaluating the overclocking potential of all Radeon HD4890s. A lot of announcements of the Radeon HD4890 OC appeared on the net, the nominal frequencies of which are only slightly lower than those obtained during overclocking of the board that took part in our testing. However, evidence has emerged that on some instances of the HD4890, the GPU was able to barely conquer the frequency of 900 MHz. This once again suggests that overclocking is a lottery and overclocking capabilities are not tied to any particular brand or model of video card.

Initially it was decided to test the Radeon HD4890 1GB with the drivers supplied on the disk from version 8.592.3. But soon after the start of the test, Catalyst 9.4 beta (8.60) drivers appeared on the network, and literally a day later the official Catalyst 9.4 (8.60) was released. On the new version, some performance increase was noticed in the game FarCry2 and Call of Duty 5. So instead of the expected 8.592.3, a new version 8.60 was urgently delivered.

GeForce GTX260 and GTX285 video cards were decided to be tested on GeForce 185.68 beta drivers, although the latest WHQL drivers are dated April 2 on the manufacturer’s website and go under the designation 182. 50.

of the warring parties — AMD / ATI and NVIDIA. In addition to the «reason» of today’s review, the video card Radeon HD4890 1Gb, the testing includes the former single-processor flagship AMD/ATI Radeon HD4870, equipped with 1Gb of memory. The video card operates at manufacturer’s recommended frequencies 750/3600.

NVIDIA is honored by two Gigabyte boards — GeForce GTX260 Core 216 and GeForce GTX285. Unfortunately, neither the first nor the second are full competitors to the Radeon HD4890. The GeForce GTX260 Core 216 video card is a full-fledged competitor to the Radeon HD4870, but it costs a little more, being right in the middle of the price gap between the HD4870 and HD4890. The GeForce GTX285 is Nvidia’s highest performing single-GPU graphics card. I think it will be interesting for everyone to see the difference in performance between the 285th and HD4890.

Several months have passed since the release of the Radeon HD 4890 video accelerator. Yes, this is no longer a “hot” novelty, but on the basis of the past time, some conclusions can already be drawn. The new flagship in AMD’s line of single-chip video accelerators has not become revolutionary, since, in fact, it is an improved version of the Radeon HD 4870 operating at higher frequencies. Perhaps the temporary, rather high cost of the Radeon HD 489 does not add much popularity either.0, since when calculating the ratio of performance and cost, it is not the most optimal combination. In this regard, the situation is better with the new debutant of this year, the Radeon HD 4770, which is likely to become more popular among gamers, especially those who have provided for the possibility of building a CrossFireX system.

At the moment, the GeForce GTX 275 video accelerator is a direct competitor in terms of price for the Radeon HD 4890, so we will follow this confrontation in testing below.

But first, let’s define the main differences (improvements) between the Radeon HD 4890 and 4870. From a technical point of view, there are not very many of them, these are:

    • the graphics core frequency increased from 750 to 850 MHz;
    • increased memory frequency from 3600 MHz to 3900 MHz.

In order to actually implement the increase in the operating frequency of the Radeon HD 4870 video accelerator, the engineers had to improve the graphics processor power circuit, which began to provide the main chip with a higher supply voltage and now withstands a greater load. In addition, the power scheme was made more economical, as a result, in idle mode, the Radeon HD 4890 is rated at 60 watts of power, while the Radeon HD 4870 is 90 watts. This is an undoubted advantage of the new solution, although in fact it stems more from the flaws of its predecessor.

Next, we will consider the Radeon HD 4890 video accelerator in more detail using the ASUS EAh5890/HTDI/1GD5 video card as an example.

The packaging of the ASUS Radeon HD 4890 video card is made in a catchy red color with an image of a huge knight. The packaging highlights support for the voltage boost function on the GPU «Voltage Tweak» and the presence of 1 GB of GDDR5 memory.

From the recommended system requirements for the ASUS EAh5890 1 GB video card, it can be noted that the system requires a power supply unit with a minimum power of 550 W, with a load capacity of the +12 V line up to 40 A.

The ASUS EAh5890 1 GB video card uses a two-slot stock cooling system, which repeats the performance of the solution on the other «top» predecessors of the Radeon series. The cooler uses a relatively loud turbine-type fan, the control program for which is programmed into the BIOS of the video card. As we know, such cooling systems are not distinguished by high efficiency and low noise level, but their advantage is that all the heated air is thrown out of the case.

The ASUS EAh5890 1 GB video card is made on the “reference” printed circuit board for Radeon HD 4890 accelerators. All memory chips on the video card are soldered on the inside of the board, which allows them to be cooled by the same turbine.

A set of interface connectors is quite standard for a modern gaming solution: two DVI, converted to VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort using adapters, and one universal TV output, converted via an adapter to S-Video and component HDTV.

The accelerator bus is additionally powered by two 6-pin connectors.

The rather large and heavy cooling system is fixed with a metal plate and fourteen screws, which evenly distribute the load on the board, adding additional rigidity to it.

The main heatsink, hidden in the casing, consists of a copper base, three heat pipes and aluminum fins. If you open the review of the Radeon HD 4870 accelerator, you will notice that the radiator of the cooling system is based on two, not three, heat pipes. That is, certain measures to increase the efficiency of the Radeon HD 489 cooler0 have been accepted by AMD engineers.

    AMD Radeon HD 48 70

    AMD Radeon HD 4890

The difference between them lies in the power supply scheme. In the power circuit of the AMD Radeon HD 4890 GPU, in addition to the 3-phase inductor, you can also see the 2-phase Pulse PA1312NL inductor. Thus, instead of the 3+2 circuit on the Radeon HD 4870, the new accelerator uses an enhanced 5+2 power circuit. Moreover, we note that it was the power circuits of the GPU, and not the memory, that were improved.

The RV790 GPU was produced in the ninth week of this year. It has a slightly larger die area and more transistors than the predecessor RV770.

Crystal area of 282 sq. mm, was increased primarily due to the «ring» of capacitors, which allowed the core to operate at a higher frequency, damping interference and smoothing the voltage during sudden load surges.

GPU RV790 has 800 universal stream processors, 16 texture units and 16 ROPs. The operating clock frequency of the GPU on ASUS EAh5890/HTDI/1G does not differ from the recommended value and is 850 MHz. Data exchange with video memory is carried out via a 256-bit bus.

1 GB of GDDR5 video memory is equipped with eight Qimonda IDVG1G-05A1F1C-40X chips. The chips have a sampling time of 1.0 ns, so the nominally acceptable frequency for them is 4000 MHz. Considering that on the AMD Radeon HD 489 video card0 chips operate at an effective frequency of 3900 MHz, it turns out that the memory overclocking capabilities are theoretically not very large, but in any case there is a small margin.

Choose what you want to compare Radeon HD4890 1GB DDR5 ASUS Voltage Tweak 90. But, compared to the AMD Radeon HD 4870, the new AMD Radeon HD 4890 has an absolute advantage of 10-15%, but this is not surprising given the higher clock speeds.

The reference cooling system on the ASUS EAh5890/HTDI/1G video card has a fairly high cooling efficiency, but at the same time creates a relatively high noise level. Stress test testing the stability of the Furmark video system managed to warm up the graphics processor to a temperature of 58 ° C, but the turbine at the same time made itself felt.

Overclocking of the AMD Radeon HD 4890 video card can be done both using the RivaTuner utility and the proprietary ASUS SmartDoctor utility. In addition, thanks to the latest Voltage Tweak support, you can increase the voltage on the GPU up to 1.45 V, which can significantly increase the results of overclocking the video card.

A definite disadvantage of the ASUS SmartDoctor utility is the limited range of GPU frequency settings, because with the voltage increased to 1.45 V, there is a chance that the GPU can operate at a frequency greater than 1000 MHz. But, apparently, in this way the manufacturer took care of the safety of his device.

As a result, with the voltage of the graphics core increased to 1.45 V, the video card was able to conquer the frequency limit for the utility of 1000 MHz, and the memory frequency turned out to be increased beyond the nominal values of the Qimonda IDVG1G-05A1F1C-40X chips — from 975 to 1150 MHz.

After overclocking the AMD Radeon HD 4890 video card, in a dispute with the GeForce GTX 275, the advantage goes to its side.

ASUS EAh5890/HTDI/1G video card is a «reference» video accelerator for AMD Radeon HD 4890, but it stands out for its ability to control the voltage on the graphics chip using Voltage Tweak technology. This should increase the overclocking capabilities of the video card and make overclocking more user-friendly. Thus, we can emphasize the trend that the shrinking segment of desktop computers is increasingly calculated for advanced users, who for the most part try or are already engaged in overclocking.

The AMD Radeon HD 4890 video accelerator, although it did not introduce anything new from an architectural point of view, but the engineering improvements in the chip and power circuit allow it to operate at higher frequencies than solutions based on the AMD Radeon HD 4870. In addition, the new solution has lower power consumption in idle mode. In addition, the stock cooler has been upgraded on reference cards with the AMD Radeon HD 4890, which does the job but produces a noticeable amount of noise under sustained load. Note that the difference in performance between solutions based on AMD Radeon HD 4890 and AMD Radeon HD 4870 is 10-15%, but the cost of the flagship is much higher.
