What is a driver

A driver is a small program code that allows the operating system and programs to communicate with the computer’s hardware.

For example, in order to use the Internet, you need a driver for a network card or Wi-Fi adapter, and in order to hear sound from speakers, you need a driver for a sound card. The same applies to video cards, printers and other equipment.

Modern versions of operating systems such as Windows 7 or Windows 8 automatically detect most hardware and install the appropriate driver. If you plug a USB stick into your computer, it will work just fine, even if you didn’t do anything special. Similarly, after installing Windows, you will see the desktop on your monitor, which means that the graphics card and monitor driver are also installed.

So why do you need to install drivers yourself if everything is done automatically? I’ll try to list the main reasons:

• In fact, not all drivers are installed. For example, after installing Windows 7 on a computer, sound may not work (a very common problem), and USB 3.0 ports may function in USB 2.0 mode.
• Those drivers that the operating system installs are designed to provide its basic functionality.
