Does Xbox One have a graphics card?

The Xbox One is the third base console in the Xbox series of video gaming consoles and the successor of the Xbox 360 console. This device was first released by Microsoft on November 22, 2013. Xbox One is an eighth-generation console; its rivals are Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo Switch.

The Xbox One console is, arguably, one of the highest sold consoles in the United States. The gaming console received a lot of favors in the US market because of a couple of factors; one of them being that it packs tons of excellent features.

One of the interesting things about the Xbox One console is that it’s powered by an AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), which is built upon the x86-64 architecture.

First, the x86-64 is a 64-bit variant of the x86 instruction set that was initially released in 1999. One good thing about x86-64 is that it introduced the 64-bit mode, compatibility mode, as well as 4-level paging mode; all of which allow the instruction set to support larger amounts of virtual & physical memories than x86-32.

As for the Xbox One’s AMD Accelerated Processing Unit; it’s designed to function as both CPU and GPU on a single die. Yes, the Xbox One gaming console came with a Custom 1.75 GHz AMD 8-core APU CPU. On the other hand, its graphics processing unit is AMD Graphics Core Next (GCN) GPU @ 853 MHz.

Don’t forget that the Xbox One Console also came with a couple of other models; the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X. The S variant came with the same central processing unit as the original Xbox One console. As for its graphics card; it came with AMD Graphics Core Next (GCN) GPU @ 914 MHz.

AMD Radeon HD 7790

The AMD Radeon HD 7799, released in March 2013, is a mid-range graphics card that’s based on the Bonaire graphics processor. The product is also built on the 28 nm process.

One of the interesting features of the AMD Radeon HD 7790 graphics card is that it offers support for DirectX 12. This explains while this card can run several different modern games.

Furthermore, you need to understand that the Bonaire graphics processor of the AMD Radeon HD 7790 graphics card is an average-sized chip with over 2,080 million transistors. Other features of this graphics card include 896 shading units, 16 ROPs, and 56 texture mapping units.

Does the PC have better graphics than other consoles?

It’s hard to say directly that PCs have better graphics than other consoles. The reason for that is simple; there are several different gaming PCs out there. Some of them come with high-end features while others pack medium- to low-end features.

However, there are a couple of reasons why I’ll choose PCs over other consoles in terms of graphics. One of them is because PCs are designed to run superior hardware and more customizable compared to the other consoles out there.

Furthermore, video games console (VGC) manufacturers have restrictions when it comes to designing their products. They have to consider certain factors, such as the cost of materials, when designing their consoles.

You don’t expect Sony or Microsoft to add a very high-end graphics card to a VGC, knowing fully well that the target customers can only pay a certain amount of money to buy the products (usually $500 or less). Manufacturers will most likely run at a loss when they add expensive graphics cards to their consoles.

However, that’s not the case for PCs, as some of them sell for as high as $2,500. It’s pretty easy to add a high-end graphics card to a computer compared to a console. Apart from that, PC hardware components are upgradeable while consoles aren’t.

That said, the bottom line is that PCs have better graphics than other consoles out there.

After eight long years, we have finally met the Xbox 360’s successor: The Xbox One. While console makers never give away all of their secrets, we have cobbled together enough data from the official unveil, Q&A panels with various Microsoft execs, and statements issued by Microsoft that we now have a good idea of the software and hardware inside the Xbox One. Read on for details of the Xbox One’s hardware, software, and some analysis of the Xbox One’s pre-owned games controversy.

The Xbox One’s hardware specs

The Xbox One is powered by an 8-core x86 AMD CPU (almost certainly based on AMD’s Kabini), and a GPU that’s very similar to the Radeon 7790. There’s 8GB of DDR3 RAM (shared between the CPU and GPU), 32MB of very fast SRAM on the graphics die, and a total of 200GB of memory bandwidth (more on that later). There’s also some new silicon in Kinect 2.0, which will come with the Xbox One as standard, which we’ve covered in a separate story. Rounding out the hardware, there’s a Blu-ray drive, 500GB hard drive, 802.11n WiFi (with WiFi Direct), HDMI in and out, Gigabit Ethernet (yay!), and USB 3.0. There’ll be three 802.11n radios, so that the console can connect to your gamepads (WiFi Direct), mobile devices, and home network without added latency.

So far, so good — but, when you take a closer look, it’s clear that there’s still a lot of unanswered questions. Before the unveil yesterday, it was widely believed that the Xbox One’s SoC would feature eight AMD Jaguar cores — just like the PS4. The problem is, Jaguar (and its accompanying GCN GPUs) are 28nm parts — and yet, according to some journalists who got an exclusive peek at the Xbox One, Microsoft says the SoC is based on a 40nm process. It’s entirely possible that AMD somehow backported its 28nm parts to 40nm, but owing to the significant differences between the processes this would’ve been a very costly and time consuming task. It’s worth noting that we don’t have confirmation that the PS4 uses a 28nm chip, either. (Updated: The latest information seems to be that Microsoft got it wrong, and that it is in fact a 28nm SoC, just like Kabini.)

When it comes to the memory bandwidth, the Xbox One has 68GB/sec of main memory (8GB DDR3) bandwidth, 102GB/sec of bandwidth to the embedded SRAM (32MB), with the last 30GB/sec probably between the CPU and GPU, or perhaps between the CPU and peripherals (gamepads, Kinect, cable TV). This is a much more complicated setup than the PS4, which just has 176GB/sec of unified main memory (8GB GDDR5) bandwidth, usable by both the GPU and CPU. The real-world difference will probably be minor — though I would say that the PS4 probably has the edge, as developers don’t need to pay special heed to the Xbox One’s fast-but-small SRAM.

For a more detailed breakdown of the Xbox One’s hardware, we’ll have to wait until the console has been released and reverse engineered by enterprising hackers and crackers — or, if we’re lucky, Microsoft might release more information at E3.

The Xbox One’s software: Apps, games, and pre-owned games controversy

Perhaps for the first time in console history, the Xbox One unveil, and the Q&A panels that followed, focused more on the software than the hardware. Almost the entirety of the unveil showcased how first-party apps (Skype, NFL, Internet Explorer) will interact with your games, movies, and TV channels.

When it comes to games, the only real features that Microsoft discussed were Smart Match and Game DVR. Game DVR keeps a rolling record of your recent gameplay (so you don’t have to remember to press record!), and allows you to share it with your friends via social networks. Smart Match is a new matchmaking system, which presumably developers can tap into, instead of creating their own matchmaking system.

And then there’s the pre-owned games controversy. With the Xbox One, all games are fully installed to an internal, unremovable hard drive. The plus side is that you don’t need to hunt for the game disc whenever you want to play a game — but, on the negative side, Microsoft says you’ll have to pay a fee to install a game a second time, on another console. Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t been very clear about how big this fee will actually be; some reports suggest that that the fee will be as large as the game’s original price.

This, as you have probably guessed, is intended to cripple the pre-owned games market. While there have been a few official Microsoft statements over the last few days, the latest is this: “While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade-in and resell games at retail. Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.”

Three operating systems in one

According to Microsoft, the Xbox One runs three different operating systems. There’s a core operating system that’s based on Microsoft’s Hyper-V hypervisor technology, which boots up when you turn the console on. This hypervisor then boots up two further operating systems: Xbox OS, which runs the games, and an OS that’s based on Windows 8, which runs the apps (Skype, TV, etc.)

The Xbox OS and Windows-based OS run side-by-side, on hardware that’s virtualized by the hypervisor. Both OSes are permanently switched on and constantly rendering their video output, to enable instant switching/snapping between games and apps/TV. The Xbox OS is rebooted whenever you load a game, but the Windows-based OS is persistent until you turn the console off. It isn’t clear how the hardware resources are split between the two virtualized OSes, but hopefully the Xbox OS (games) gets most of the RAM and GPU time.

This is a very interesting and potentially very powerful setup. I actually speculated about the Xbox One running Windows 8 way back in July 2011. At the time, I theorized that Microsoft would develop a single OS (Windows 8) and interface (Metro) that unifies every form factor, from desktop, to tablet, to smartphone, to console. While I was only half right, it’s clear from the various demos, photos, and videos that the Xbox One will look and feel like a Windows 8 device. The grid-like Metro design language is there, snapping is there, the fonts are the same. While we’ll probably have to wait until the Build developer conference to find out more, it is also very likely that apps developed for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 will run on the Xbox One with minimal modification.

With the switch from a PowerPC CPU in the Xbox 360 to x86 in the Xbox One, it might also simplify the development and porting of games between Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and Xbox One. We have almost no details on the Xbox One’s gaming OS, but it’s possible that it’s also been rejigged to share more of the Windows 8 kernel.

In short, the unification between all form factors is virtually complete. In theory, this is very exciting for Microsoft, consumers, and developers. In practice, Microsoft now needs to get off its ass and shift a ton of devices so that consumers and developers can actually take advantage of this utopian unified interface and ecosystem.

    What kind of graphics card does the Xbox One use?

    The graphics card in the Xbox One is a custom AMD Durango GCN 1. 0 with a process size of 28 nm and 5 billion transistors. This is an AMD GPU that is built by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. An equivalent graphics card to this one is the AMD Radeon HD 7790.

    A graphics card (also called a GPU or graphics processing unit) is a type of integrated circuit designed for computer graphics that can render images and videos and interact with 3D applications. This guide will help you find out what kind of GPU you have in your Xbox One so that you can know what type of performance to expect. 

    All information collected on the technical build of the Xbox One was obtained from technical sheets by Microsoft. The exact design of these consoles lists the key features included in the hardware of the device. 

    The Xbox One has a GPU that is based on AMD’s Durango GCN architecture. The GPU is a semi-custom design that was built by AMD. 

    Because the Xbox One is a gaming console and not a computer, it used a custom graphics card built specifically for this console only. There is no exact duplicate. 

    However, there are some similar cards that do offer speed and performance in the same ballpark. Everything needs to be considered as well, like Xbox storage, memory, and speed. 

    The exact specifications on this console include an 8-core x86 AMD CPU and a custom GPU that closely resembles the same capabilities as the AMD Radeon HD 7790. 

    But it is impossible to confirm this is the card. It is likely a version of this GPU that has been tweaked and customized to perfectly fit the Xbox One. 

    This GPU operates at 853 MHz, which is solid for gaming speeds. But the recent launch of the Xbox One S included a 7.1% increase in GPU clock speed to 914 MHz. 

    Xbox One Graphics Card Specifications

    The Xbox One is a gaming console that has some of the best graphics available. This is because of the high-quality GPU included in the console design.

    The graphics card on the Xbox One is quite powerful, but it also has a lot of memory and speed.  

    This means that you can use more graphical effects and textures without slowing down the Xbox One game or lowering its graphical fidelity. We look at all of the primary specs below. 

    GPU Clock

    This GPU includes 768 cores and runs at 853 MHZ. This is the GPU clock speed and allows support of Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n wireless, and Wi-Fi.

    The memory clock on this card is 1,066 MHZ with 2.1 Gbps. This equals a power draw rating at a maximum of 95 W. 

    GPU Memory

    The AMD Durango Xbox One GPU includes 8 GBs of memory. This is a DDR3 memory type with a 256-bit memory bus. 

    The memory provides a total bandwidth of 68.22 GB/s. This memory speed and size make it possible for the console to support both 1080p and 720p video outputs. 

    Graphics Features

    This GPU also includes 768 shading units with dimensions of 333 mm x 274 mm x 79 mm. This is a compact card that packs a lot of performance and power.

    Other features include a pixel rate of 13. 65 GPixel/s, a texture rate of 40.94 GTexel/s, and a total of 48 texture mapping units.

    Can You Change The Graphics Card In An Xbox One?

    The graphics card is the most important component of the Xbox One. It is the component that lets you view high-quality games and videos.

    Without a good graphics card, you won’t be able to play games in high definition or watch videos in their full quality.

    If you want to change your graphics card, it is not possible without breaking it down and reassembling it. This would require extremely precise expertise in the industry too. 

    If you were to try and change the GPU, you could ruin the device. It would also void any warranty you have on the console.  

    Graphic Cards That Are Similar To The Xbox One Graphics Card

    The graphics card is one of the most important parts of gaming. It is used to generate the graphics that appear on the screen.

    The Xbox One has a powerful card which makes it one of the best gaming consoles for its price range. Below we have listed some of the similar cards you can buy to match the same performance. 

    AMD Radeon HD 7790

    The AMD Radeon HD 7790 GPU is extremely similar, and some guess it is the same one. But it is not a perfect match.

    This GPU also includes a dynamic set of features, and it is built on a 28 nm process. It also supports DirectX 12. 

    However, it has about half the number of transistors, and the GPU clock speed is 1,000 MHz. This is an increase in speed compared to the Xbox One GPU. 

    This card also used the GCN 2.0 architecture with 1,024 MB of memory and a dual-slot board design. 

    Nvidia GTX 750

    The Nvidia GTX 750 graphics card is a powerful GPU with 512 cores and 1,024 MB in available memory. It has some similar features to the Xbox One too. 

    It uses a Maxwell architecture, but the process size is the same at 28 nm. It includes much fewer transistors and a faster clock speed too. 

    The unique design of this card is interesting because it includes a base clock speed of 1,020 MHz and a boost clock speed of 1,085 MHz. This is excellent performance for this type of graphics card. 

    Is The Xbox One Graphics Card Better Than The Alternatives?

    The Xbox One graphics card is not as powerful as other alternatives like the AMD Radeon HD 7790 or Nvidia GTX 750 graphics card. This is primarily due to lower clocking speeds.

    These graphics cards have faster clock rates for speed and memory. The Radeon HD 7790 is the preferred choice of the three, too, with more RAM and better memory bandwidth. 

    It is also a bit older than these competing graphics cards. The primary difference between the Xbox One GPU and these alternatives is the number of transistors.

    More transistors equal better, faster performance with more power. This advantage is a reason why the Xbox One GPU still remains so popular and high-performing today.

    The Xbox One is a pretty dated console keeping in mind that multiple new consoles have been released since the original came out in 2013. You might be interested in building a PC that is similar to or better than the original Xbox One. In this article, we are going to go over the PC GPU that is equivalent to the Xbox One.

    What graphics card is comparable to the Xbox One? To get Xbox One quality graphics and performance the GTX 750 and AMD HD 7790 are the closest to the Xbox One on paper. However if you’re looking for similar performance in the latest games we would recommend the GTX 1050 or GTX 1650 graphics card.

    Let’s jump in and take a look in more detail.

    What is the Equivalent GPU for Xbox One?

    The Nvidia GTX 750 or AMD HD 7790 are the closest PC GPUs to the original Xbox One. These are pretty old graphics cards. If you got the relatively new Nvidia GTX 1050 or GTX 1650 then you would get better performance than the Xbox One even though these are entry-level graphics cards. 

    Do note that comparing a PC graphics card to a console is like comparing an Apple to an Orange. It is not really fair as consoles have specific hardware and developers are able to optimize their games according to said hardware. Things are very different for PCs are consumers can pick from a wide variety of CPUs and graphics cards. The level of optimization is just not the same. 

    This is why we have compared the performance on paper and the actual in-game performance below.

    Teraflop to Teraflop Performance Comparison

    The Xbox One has 1.31 Teraflops of throughput. The Nvidia GTX 750 has a throughput of 1.4 Teraflops and the AMD HD 7790 has a throughput of 1.7 Teraflops. The recent GTX 1050 offers 1.8 Teraflops and the 1650 has 3 Teraflops of throughput. 

    So, on paper, both of these graphics cards are more powerful than the Xbox One but the performance might not be on par when playing the same games on PC and the Xbox One because of different factors such as optimization.  

    Real-World Performance Comparison

    The Xbox One targets 30 FPS in games at 900p to 1080p resolution on average. This obviously varies from game to game. While games are optimized for consoles in order to take advantage of the hardware inside, the same cannot be said about PC hardware.

    The Nvidia GTX 750 and AMD HD 7790 are perfectly capable of running competitive games like Overwatch and Fortnite at 1080p 60 FPS at low to medium settings but if you are interested in playing more intensive games at 60 FPS then you are going to need a better graphics card.

    That is why I recommended the newer Nvidia GTX 1050 and 1650 cards as they have the newer architectures and perform better in modern games. Pricing of graphics cards is all over the place right now, so you can get the variant that is the cheapest.

    Note that consoles have specific hardware specifications which makes it easier for developers to optimize their games. PCs have infinite combinations of graphics cards, CPU, and RAM. This can make optimization very challenging. That is why you need a more powerful graphics card on PC in order to get an ideal experience.

    Recommend Graphics Cards

    We recommend going with the Nvidia GTX 1050 or the newer GTX 1650 graphics cards in order to get better performance than the Xbox One. Do note that the pricing of graphics cards is all over the place right now and much higher than the MSRP. We do not recommend overpaying for GPUs. The following are the graphics cards that we recommend:

    Zotac GTX 1650 OC

    The Zotac GTX 1650 OC is a very small and compact card and fits into pretty much any PC case. There is a single fan on the card to keep the temperature in check when under load. The card features the Turing and comes with 4GB of GDDR6 memory. The GPU is overclocked out of the box and can boost to 1620 MHz. For output, you get a single DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b, and DVI-D. It features 896 CUDA cores.

    This is a budget entry-level graphics card, so you do not get anything fancy like RGB lighting or a backplate. This is still a GTX 1650 at its core, so you will be able to run pretty much any game at 1080p at 60 FPS at relatively high settings. 

    Asus GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Phoenix Fan Edition

    You can find the older GTX 1050 Ti at a more reasonable price. This is the Phoenix Fan Edition from Asus and comes with 4GB of VRAM and a single fan to keep it cool. The graphics card has 768 CUDA cores which is fewer than the GTX 1650 but the price is lower as well. 

    Even with the fewer CUDA cores, the graphics card can run pretty much any game at 1080p 60 FPS at medium to high settings. For video output, you get a DVI-D port,  HDMI port, and DP 1.4. Just like the 1650 above, this does not come with RGB lighting or a backplate.

    MSI RX 570 Armor OC

    On the AMD side of things, we can recommend the MSI RX 570 which is a great graphics card for 1080p gaming. The graphics card has 8GB GDDR5 VRAM and can boost to 1268 MHz. The card has a pair of fans to help it keep cool when under load. It features 2048 CUs and will run any game at 1080p.
