Probably few people know what exactly AMD A4-4000 , not the notorious AMD A10-6800K is the first AMD Richland APU family to hit the market. It happened in May of this year, and at first some Internet resources even ranked it among the AMD Trinity APU line. In principle, you can understand AMD, since the AMD A4-4000 is a budget processor, and it is primarily focused on office systems. Agree, it’s somehow worthless to start the announcement of the new AMD Richland APU family from its “weakest” representative.
However, this is just marketing. We, and, probably, many readers, are more interested in another question: can AMD A4-4000 be a real competitor in the market of budget components? Of course, it’s too early to say anything without test results, but looking at the price (approximately $39), we can already assume that there will definitely be increased interest in this model.
Indeed, only AMD Sempron 145 processors (about $32) and AMD Athlon II X2 340 (about $37) are cheaper on the domestic market. However, the first one is already morally outdated and will soon completely disappear from store shelves, and the second one has no built-in graphics core, that is, it is not suitable for an office computer. Thus, AMD A4-4000 is by far the cheapest option for building a budget system.
Packing, delivery set and standard cooling system
AMD A4-4000 is supplied in a small white box. By this sign, it is easy to determine that there is a processor with a locked multiplier inside. Recall that black colors prevail in the packaging design for models with the “K” index. Printing with fragments from office applications and logos of various Internet services clearly hints at what range of tasks the AMD A4-4000 processor is oriented towards.
In all other respects, the box from AMD A4-4000 has a familiar design. At its ends, two main technologies used in modern AMD hybrid processors are briefly described: AMD Eyefinity and AMD Dual Graphics. However, for the AMD A4-4000 model, the technology of combining the capabilities of the integrated graphics core and the discrete graphics card is not available. Although this can hardly be considered a disadvantage, since performance and integrated graphics are quite enough for office applications and video content playback.
In the box you can find the user manual, the cooler and the processor itself, packed in a plastic blister for additional protection. There is also a sticker with the AMD Richland APU series logo.
The AMD A4-4000 uses exactly the same cooler as the higher performance AMD A6-6400K.
The design and dimensions of the radiator have not changed, and it is also made entirely of aluminum. As in the case of the AMD A6-6400K, here a low-profile (15 mm) fan with a size of 70 mm and a power of 2.4 W is used to blow the fins. Power is supplied through a 4-pin connector with support for monitoring and PWM method for controlling the speed of rotation of its blades.
To test the effectiveness of the «boxed» cooler, a small experiment was carried out. After raising the fan speed to the maximum value (3000 rpm), we increased the load and measured the CPU heating. During testing, the ambient temperature was 25°C. As a result, the following results were obtained:
- simple processor — temperature 30°C;
- load 50% (carried out using the program wPrime v. 2.00) — temperature 35°;
- load 100% (carried out using the program AIDA 64) — temperature 39°C.
From this experiment, we can conclude that, despite the simplicity of the design, the standard cooling system copes with its task quite well.
Appearance
Externally, the AMD A4-4000 is no different from the previously reviewed solutions from the AMD Richland APU family — AMD A10-6800K, AMD A8-6600K and AMD A6-6400K, except that the processor marking has changed . This is not surprising, since all of them are compatible with the Socket FM2 processor socket. As in previous cases, the crystal was grown in Germany, and the final assembly of the AMD A4-4000 was already carried out in China.

In normal mode (Turbo Core 3.0 disabled), the AMD A4-4000 speed is 3000 MHz with a reference frequency of 100 MHz and a x30 multiplier. At the time of reading, the core voltage was 1.328 V.
If you use the dynamic overclocking mode or simply the automatic overclocking function using proprietary Turbo Core 3.0 technology, the multiplier is increased by two points to the value of «x32». In this case, the processor speed increases to 3200 MHz, and the voltage — to 1.352 V.
In idle mode, the multiplier decreases to the value «x14», thereby reducing the frequency to 1400 MHz. The voltage is 1.032 V.
Since only one dual-core module is used in the AMD A4-4000, the cache memory is distributed in it similarly to the AMD A6-6400K from the same AMD Richland APU family. L1 cache: 16 KB for each of the 2 cores is allocated for data with 4 channels of associativity, while 64 KB is allocated for instructions with 2 channels of associativity. L2 cache: 1 MB with 16 associativity channels. There is no L3 cache.
The DDR3 RAM controller operates in dual-channel mode and officially supports modules up to and including 1333 MHz.
Despite the fact that the AMD A4-4000 processor belongs to the AMD Richland APU family, the AMD Radeon HD 7480D video core still belongs to the previous series. Although, as we all know, there is no fundamental difference between the integrated graphics from the AMD Radeon HD 7xxxD and AMD Radeon HD 8xxxD lines. According to the technical documentation, the nominal frequency of the AMD Radeon HD 7480D video core is 724 MHz, but in our case it worked at a speed of 720 MHz. It uses only two SIMD engines (SIMD Engine), that is, only 128 stream processors. Therefore, you should not count on great performance in games even at the minimum settings.
