Both AMD and Intel appear to be playing release date games with their latest dual core processors.

Intel’s affordable dual core desktop solution, the new Pentium D, officially launched in the middle of last month, but has yet to be seen in the channel.

AMD appears to be joining in on Intel’s game and is lifting their NDA on Athlon 64 X2 performance today, instead of waiting until June as they had originally planned. Note that the timing of today’s article doesn’t mean that there’s any change in the Athlon 64 X2 release or shipping schedule. The CPUs still won’t be available until Q3 or Q4 of this year, but AMD appears to want to get performance numbers out there as soon as possible; given the impressive performance that we had previewed in our first article, it’s not much of a surprise from AMD.


In our first AMD dual core article, we simulated the performance of an Athlon 64 X2 4400+ using an Opteron x75 CPU. This time around, we have two chips from AMD, both officially Athlon 64 X2 processors, to give you a better feel for the actual dual core Socket-939 performance that you’ll be seeing later this year.

We’ve already discussed the pricing and lineup of AMD’s Athlon 64 X2 line, but as a quick refresher, here are the tables from our original review:


For starters, the Athlon 64 X2’s clock speeds aren’t that low compared to the current single-core Athlon 64s.   The top of the line Athlon 64 FX-55 runs at 2.6GHz, only 200MHz faster than the Athlon 64 X2 4800+.  This is in stark contrast to Intel’s desktop dual core offerings, which run between 2.8GHz and 3.2GHz, a full 600MHz drop from their fastest single core CPU. 


Today, we’ll be taking a look at two CPUs in particular: the top of the line Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and the entry-level Athlon 64 X2 4200+. Both are Socket-939 CPUs and will, when released, work in all Socket-939 motherboards with a BIOS update. For today’s article, all tests were run on an ASUS nForce4 SLI motherboard with no changes other than a BIOS update to enable support for the Athlon 64 X2 processors. For the Intel CPUs, we used Intel’s own 955X board.  All systems were configured with 1GB of memory and used the same Seagate 120GB PATA HDD and ATI Radeon X850 XT video card.  We used the latest Catalyst 5.4 drivers.  The AMD system used DDR400 with 2-2-2-5/1T timings, while the Intel system used DDR2-667 with 4-4-4-15 timings.

So, as we promised in the first part of the series about dual-core processors, today we’ll look at the second CPU from this new series: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+.

Like the Intel dual-core processor, the Athlon 64 X2 is, in fact, two almost full-fledged processors integrated on one die. True, if in the case of the Pentium XE / Pentium D, the “assembly” is supposed to be a little larger than the doubled original (due to the need to introduce an arbiter of a common bus for two cores into the processor), then in the case of the Athlon 64 X2 it should be slightly less than the simple sum of two processors, since the memory controller and the Hyper Transport bus controller in the AMD dual-core processor are only one, that is, both cores share them among themselves. Accordingly, an analogue of the bus arbiter (hello, Intel!), appeared, organizing the interaction of cores with shared buses. However, this arbiter (according to AMD terminology — “Crossbar Switch”) seems to be able to organize the interaction between the cores themselves (apparently, this means the ability of one core to “crawl” for the necessary data into the L2 cache of the second, thus saving on long accesses to the main RAM and reducing the load on the memory controller, as well as ensuring cache coherence). of which is equipped with its own caches of the first and second levels. Now, if one of the processors used a scheme with a common L2 cache for two cores, or, for example, with separate L2 caches supplemented by a common L3, then we could talk about a difference in approaches. And so … in general, everything is the same. Even the mechanism of direct interaction between two cores (without the participation of a memory controller) was completely copied by AMD from the shaggy old Athlon MP (two such processors in an SMP system were also able to «communicate directly»). In general, each company simply used all their old practices applicable to this case. In fairness, we note that AMD had a little more of them …

Also a very advantageous bonus of the new AMD processor is that, unlike the Pentium XE and Pentium D, it can work (according to AMD itself, which, however, there is no reason not to believe) not only on boards specially designed for its installation , but also on any Socket 939 board that can handle, for example, an Athlon 64 FX. True, the BIOS still needs to be updated, because if it «doesn’t understand» the Athlon 64 X2, then we won’t get the long-awaited multi-core capability: the operating system will see only one core out of two. I don’t want to yell at you, but for some motherboard manufacturers this may cause a not-so-good urge to «sell one board twice» by simply refusing to release a BIOS update for their older products in connection with the release of the Athlon 64 X2, and releasing «special options» instead. » under the dual-core. However, even if there are such, let’s hope they will remain in the minority …

Comparative Specifications

Here, we simply provide a table that contains the most important information about the characteristics of dual-core and top-end single-core processors from the two companies. From our point of view, the explanations in this section are superfluous: those who are interested in technical details should understand everything without them. We only note that there are two and three important and not entirely obvious changes (compared to top-end single-cores) in Intel and AMD dual-cores, respectively: Pentium XE 840 has acquired EIST power consumption reduction technology, but its bus has “rolled back” from 1066 MHz to 800, Athlon 64 X2 4800+ has acquired SSE3 support and an improved memory controller, in addition, it is already being manufactured using a 90-nanometer process technology. It is probably not worth reminding once again about the increase in the size of the core, the number of transistors and power consumption: this is obvious.
