- The Ryzen 5 3600 has higher Level 3 Cache. This is useful when you have substantial multiprocessing workloads, many computationally intense simultaneous processes. More likely on a server, less on a personally used computer for interactive desktop workloads.
- For some games, a cpu with a higher clock speed, or in a technical name IPC (Instructions per clock), has better results than other CPU’s with higher core count and lower core speed.
- The Ryzen 5 3600 has a higher turbo clock boost. Turbo Boost is a CPU feature that will run CPU clock speed faster than its base clock, if certain conditions are present. It will enable older software that runs on fewer cores, to perform better on newer hardware. Since games are software too, it is also applicable to them.
- The Ryzen 5 3600 has a smaller process size. The faster a transistor can toggle on and off, the faster it can do work. And transistors that turn on and off with less energy are more efficient, reducing the operating power, or “dynamic power consumption,” required by a processor.

In 2017, the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 was a popular choice among PC enthusiasts due to its incredible price-performance ratio for gaming and workloads. Not only did AMD’s offering outperform Intel’s rival Kaby Lake line, it also redefined what value processors should be in the long run.
With significant improvements in microprocessor architecture over the past five years, the Ryzen 5 1600 is now more of an entry-level option. In any case, how does it compare to the conventional processors released by AMD and Intel in 2022? Let’s find out!
AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Specifications and Overview
In terms of compute, the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is a 6-core, 12-thread processor based on the Zen microarchitecture and built using GlobalFoundries’ 14nm manufacturing node. With a base clock of 3.2 GHz and a maximum clock of 3.6 GHz, the Ryzen 5 1600 is priced at 219dollars had to compete with the Intel Core i5-7500 and i5-7600K.
Unlike its «X» SKU, the Ryzen 5 1600 has a TDP (thermal power rating) of just 65W and comes bundled with a 95W AMD Wraith Spire cooler capable of overclocking this processor well above its stock frequency. However, both options benefit from 16MB of L3 cache and support for XFR (extended frequency range), a feature that uses AMD’s SenseMI technology to boost core clock speeds based on available thermal headroom.

In addition, one of the main advantages of the Ryzen 5 1600 over its direct competitors was the inclusion of an unlocked ratio multiplier. Paired with a low-cost but powerful B350 motherboard and high-speed DDR4 memory, the overclocked Ryzen 5 1600 matched Intel’s per-core performance and was a tough competitor to its own lineup.
Despite apparent issues with memory compatibility and power management modes at launch, the Ryzen 5 1600 has become an exceptional value for budget-conscious gamers and content creators. Following its success, AMD has continued to expand its Ryzen 5 processor lineup by releasing affordable mainstream CPUs with generation after generation upgrades each year thereafter.
While similarly priced 1600 alternatives such as the Ryzen 5 2600, 3600, and 5600 delivered significant performance and efficiency gains over their predecessors, the same cannot be said for AMD’s Zen 4 processors, specifically the Ryzen 5 7600X. Architectural improvements aside, when you factor in the cost of moving to an entirely new platform, the 7600X’s value proposition seems a little underwhelming compared to expensive AM5 motherboards and DDR5 memory kits.
On the other hand, mainstream Intel processors such as the Core i5-12400 and i5-12600K show how competitive pricing can affect the average consumer. Also, when comparing 12th generation Intel Alder Lake processors with AMD Ryzen 5000 Series, it becomes clear that Ryzen has the edge in terms of platform compatibility, while Alder Lake’s dominance lies in its support for DDR4 and DDR5 memory configurations.
However, when we compare the Ryzen 5 1600 to $200 current-gen products like the Ryzen 5 5600 and Core i5-12400, it’s interesting to see how far CPU architecture has come in the last few years. To determine the relative performance of AMD Ryzen 5 1600 vs. Ryzen 5 5 600 and Core i5-12400, we decided test them with several free test programs for Windows.
As for the test configuration, both AMD processors were paired with an MSI B450 TOMAHAWK motherboard, 16GB (2×8) G.Skill Flare X DDR4-3200 CL14 RAM, and an ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 OC Edition GPU. Meanwhile, an MSI MAG B660 TOMAHAWK motherboard with the same GPU and memory configuration was used on Intel’s test bench.
Since Ryzen 5 1600 is not natively supported on the latest version of Windows 11, we ran all tests by installing a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro (version 21h3) on a WD_Black SN850 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD. So, without further ado, let’s get straight to the test results!

In CPU-intensive benchmarks such as Cinbench R23 and Geekbench 5, the Ryzen 5 5600 and Core i5-12400 outperformed AMD’s Summit Ridge processor by a wide margin. While Blender’s Ryzen 5 1600 rating seems good enough for daily workloads, creative pros might want to get their hands on a brand new Zen 3 or Alder Lake chip, especially if they’re looking to cut render times.
A similar pattern can be seen in 7-Zip’s File Compression test, where the Ryzen 5 5600 and Core i5-12400 showed significant performance gains of around 50-80% over the old Zen microarchitecture. While the i5-12400’s decompression rating is lower than any of the Ryzen processors, the former makes up for it purely in terms of compression and decompression speed.

Now, one of the major weaknesses of 1st Gen AMD Ryzen processors has been their poor performance in single-threaded applications. In games that rely heavily on single-core performance, even the overclocked Ryzen 5 1600 couldn’t match or beat the Intel Core i5-7500 and 7600K in average frame rates.
To make sure the Ryzen 5 1600 can match the 5600 and Core i5-12400 in modern AAA games, we chose the same test rig by pairing all three processors with Nvidia’s RTX 3060 GPU. In addition, the testing methodology included running five of the most popular but demanding AAA games at 1080p and Ultra settings to create a more realistic load on both the CPU and GPU.

In all of our gaming benchmarks, it’s clear that the Ryzen 5 1600 is struggling to maintain consistent frame rates compared to any of the current generation processors. For example, in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, both Ryzen 5 5600 and Core i5-12400 were at least 20-30% faster than Ryzen 5 1600, with similar performance gains in Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
While the Shadow of the Tomb Raider in-game benchmark performs well for the Ryzen 5 1600 at an average of 86fps, it falls far short of the performance of the newer Zen 3 or Alder Lake chip. Meanwhile, CS:GO puts the Ryzen 5 5600 and Core i5-12400 in completely different territory as they deliver about 100 more frames than the average Ryzen 5 1600 FPS.
For gamers with a high refresh rate display, upgrade to Ryzen 5 The 5600 or Core i5-12400 seems to be the better option as both processors will help keep your gaming experience smooth across the board. However, if you have a Ryzen 5 1600 and want to make the most of its stock gaming performance, consider investing in a FreeSync monitor that can use Nvidia’s Adaptive-Sync technology over a wide VRR range.
Ryzen 5 1600 still relevant in 2023?
Given that the Ryzen 5 5600 and Core i5-12400 are generic, mainstream chips released in 2022, the AMD Summit Ridge processor can no longer be considered a viable option for 2023.
