AMD Turion in Notebooks — Byte/RE

While the mass production of AMD’s new mobile Turion processors (http://www. amd.com) has not yet been officially announced, several well-known companies have already introduced laptop models based on these crystals. As a reminder, this range of processors was designed with the needs of users on the go looking for high-performance laptops with long battery life, support for the latest wireless protocols, modern video adapters, and reliable security features.

Previous generations of AMD mobile processors were typically used primarily in heavy laptops that did not require the same level of thermal protection as lighter machines. Already at the beginning of this year, AMD introduced several modifications of Turion processors with ML and MT indices for 64-bit mobile systems. Recall that these indices mean higher performance and more economical energy consumption, respectively. The index numbers indicate the relative performance of the processor compared to other processors in the same line. The AMD Turion family soon included the following processor models: MT-28, MT-30, MT-32, MT-34, ML-28, ML-30, ML-32, ML-34, and ML-37 with clock speeds from 1. 6 to 2.0 GHz.

Shortly after the release of the new processors, Fujitsu Siemens Computers (www.fujitsu-siemens.com) introduced the Amilo A7645 notebook based on Turion 64 technology for mobile PCs. Amilo laptops with Turion technology have standard wireless connectivity and, when combined with Windows XP Service Pack 2, offer enhanced virus protection, the company said.

In May, HP Corporation (www.hp.com) also announced its first AMD Turion mobile processor-based laptop, the HP Special Edition L2000. The computer was equipped with a 14-inch widescreen LCD and weighed approximately 2.4 kg. Already in June, this Turion-based mobile PC was accompanied by the Pavilion ze2000z multimedia notebook. Note that AMD chips are also used in the Pavilion dv1000, zv6000, dv4000 and zd8000 models. In the Compaq Presario family, the AMD Turion 64 processor powers the M2000z and V2000z notebooks.

In June, AMD announced the addition of another processor model to the lineup, which received the ML-40 index. The presented crystal had 1 MB of L2 cache, and its clock frequency was 2.2 GHz.

Around the same time, HP Japan announced the release of two models of the new duplex HP Compaq nx6125 Notebook PC. According to representatives of the corporation, the presented models have improved security tools, including a biometric module for user registration by fingerprinting, as well as HP ProtectTools software, with which you can set individual system operation parameters, as well as its level of protection.

The highest performing version of the nx6125 is powered by an AMD Turion 64 ML-40 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz. Configuration includes 15″ 1400×1050 (SXGA+) LCD, 512 MB RAM (PC2700, expandable to 2 GB), 80 GB (5400 rpm) HDD, DVD±RW optical drive, IEEE 802.11b/g wireless network controller.

The second modification is based on the AMD Turion 64 ML-28 processor with a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz. The notebook is equipped with a 15-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1024×768 (XGA), 256 MB of memory (PC2700, expandable to 2 GB), 40 GB hard disk (4200 rpm), CD-RW / DVD-ROM drive , an IEEE 802. 11b/g wireless controller.

All modifications of the HP Compaq nx6125 Notebook PC are based on the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M HMC with integrated graphics, a built-in modem and a standard set of expansion slots, including three USB ports, IEEE 1394, PC Сard Type II slot, Express Сard, device for reading flash cards (SD/MMC/Memory Stick (PRO)/xD-Picture Card/Smart Media), D-Sub and S Video video interfaces, as well as Gigabit Ethernet. The battery life of systems from a lithium-ion battery is about 2.5 hours. The overall dimensions of laptops are 328x267x31 mm, and the weight does not exceedkg.

At the beginning of July, the Moscow representative office of Acer (www.acer.ru) began deliveries to Russia of Aspire 5020 series notebooks based on AMD Turion 64 ML-28 processors. The new laptops are offered as mobile multimedia centers and combine high performance, functionality, ergonomics and mobility.

Extensive video and graphics processing capabilities are achieved through the use of the ATI Mobility Radeon X700 video adapter with 128 MB of independent video memory in the Aspire 5020. All 5020 series computers ship with dual-layer DVD-RW drives and several types of flash card readers. Notebooks of the new series are equipped with widescreen 15.4-inch displays, made using Acer CrystalBrite technology. As you know, this technology allows you to increase the image contrast and color saturation, while maintaining a standard level of power consumption. Models with a widescreen display are well suited not only for home use, but also for professional use. Note that displays with an aspect ratio of 16:10 allow you to simultaneously display more information on the screen and work with complex spreadsheets.
Acer Signal Up technology improves the quality of wireless data transmission (IEEE 820.11 b/g protocol) by using a specially shaped antenna and its location in the front cover of the notebook. It also ensures that the notebook is compatible with modern software and hardware data protection tools, in particular, the CCX and WPA protocols.

Aspire 5020 Series weighs 3kg and has a battery life of up to 3 hours.
