Windows 11: Core i9-12900K and i5-12600K Gaming Benchmarks — The TLDR

Below you can see the geometric mean of our gaming tests at 1080p and 1440p, with each resolution split into its own chart to give us a decent overall view of the current landscape. As usual, we’re testing with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 to reduce GPU-imposed bottlenecks as much as possible, and differences between test subjects will shrink with lesser cards or higher resolutions. You’ll find further game-by-game breakdowns below. Most of the titles below show little meaningful differentiation at higher resolutions, so we only tested four of the seven titles at 1440p to analyze performance scaling. Additionally, it’s easy to overwhelm the charts with multiple DDR4 and DDR5 results for each chip, so in an attempt to keep the charts as decipherable as possible, we’re only presenting our DDR4 overclock performance results in this article. We’ll post the DDR5 overclocking results to our CPU Benchmark hierarchy.  

Due to Alder Lake’s hybrid architecture, there will be teething pains with some games. As we reported, Denuvo DRM falsely identified Intel’s E-cores as a separate system, and thus 91 Denuvo-enabled game titles wouldn’t work with Alder Lake chips. Intel has worked with Denuvo, and the software maker issued a flurry of game patches to fix the issue. However, some titles are still not patched, though more patches are incoming. [EDIT: As of December 2021, only three games remain unpatched] Intel says that all games should eventually work with Alder Lake. We didn’t encounter any issues with Denuvo in our testing, thanks to our gaming test suite

The $549 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X is AMD’s fastest gaming chip, but the $589 Core i9-12900K is 8.7% faster in the cumulative 1080p gaming measurement across our entire test suite. And that’s with both the DDR4 and DDR5 memory configurations, so you won’t have to drop serious cash on a DDR5 kit to get there.

Stepping down $300, the $289 Core i5-12600K with DDR5 memory is ~2.7% faster than the $299 Ryzen 5 5600X, but that gap widens slightly with less expensive DDR4 memory. The Core i5-12600K also effectively ties the Ryzen 7 5800X, but for $161 less.

Rocket Lake buyers will be plenty disappointed. The Core i9-11900K landed a mere six months ago at $539, but the 12900K is ~11% faster in gaming. It’s also much faster in the threaded workloads that we’ll see later in our application testing. We see a similar story unfold with the Core i5-11600K compared to the 12600K, with 9% more performance in gaming coming for $27 more.

Naturally, moving over to 1440p brings a GPU bottleneck into the equation, so the performance deltas between the chips shrink tremendously. Here the Core i5-12600K effectively ties the 5600X and 5800X, while the 12900K is a mere 3. 6% faster than the Ryzen 9 5950X.

Flipping through the 99th percentile charts shows larger deltas, but we have to view those with caution as Windows 11 is still young and seems to suffer from more framerate variability than our Windows 10 test platform. This could result from yet-to-be-updated game code, the relatively new graphics drivers for Windows 11, or some other combination of factors that could be smoothed out in the future.

The Alder Lake chips profit more from overclocking than the AMD Ryzen models. After tuning, the Core i9-12900K with DDR4 was 9.7% faster than the stock configuration at 1080p. Meanwhile, the Core i5-12600K jumped 15%, which is more than we would expect from the gains we see with new chip generations. In fact, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen double-digit overclocking performance gains in gaming from easily-attainable frequencies.

Overall, the Alder Lake chips are a boon for enthusiasts. By comparison, the overclocked Ryzen chips were anywhere from 3. 7% to 6.6% faster after tuning. You can read more about our overclock settings on the overclocking page.

Intel’s Alder Lake carves out a win in Windows 11, but large performance deltas in a few of the game titles can heavily impact these types of cumulative measurements. For instance, Intel enjoys a sizeable lead in Hitman 3, but that game is specifically tuned to leverage the E-cores effectively by offloading low-priority tasks like physics to the small cores. That can be seen as an advantage by some because more game devs could take this approach, or as a fluke by others that think this type of optimization will only come to Intel-sponsored titles.

The competition between Intel and AMD is absolutely closer now, so it’s best to make an informed decision based on the types of titles you play frequently. Be sure to check out the individual tests below.

Windows 11: 3DMark, VRMark, Chess Engines on Intel Core i9-12900K

Synthetic benchmarks don’t tend to translate well to real-world gaming, but they do show us the raw amount of compute power exposed to game engines. It’s too bad most games don’t fully exploit it.

The Core i9-12900K is a whopping 41% faster than the Ryzen 9 5950X in the 3DMark Time Spy CPU test, but as we’ve seen with most of the Windows 11 gaming benchmarks, it doesn’t pick up too much additional performance by using DDR5.

We can’t say the same for the 12600K, at least in this benchmark. The 12600K with DDR5 is 21% faster than it is with DDR4, and it easily leads the Ryzen 5 5600X in both configurations. Surprisingly, the DDR4 configurations yield tangible performance gains in the DX11 Fire Strike physics benchmark, with the 12900K with DDR4 being ~10% faster than the DDR5 config.

We’ve added the open-source neural network-based Leela chess engine to our benchmark roster. As evidenced by the DDR5 test results, this AI-powered engine obviously scales better with more memory throughput than the Stockfish engine.

Engineer is a pre-release processor sample, usually provided for testing purposes. It has some differences from the final sample. Usually this is a lower frequency, but there were also some peculiarities: a blocked memory multiplier on any chipset, or vice versa, it could be overclocked everywhere. Thermal paste under the cover instead of solder and the like. And some completely correspond to the release images. Well, how good or bad is one of the i9 engineering samples-12900K selling for a measly $200 for an i9? Let’s figure it out.

All this stuff is bought, of course, on AliExpress. There are several engineering versions, the difference between which at first glance cannot be determined.

Our choice fell on QXJE, since it has higher base frequencies, which indirectly determines its overclocking potential. We turn to the product description and read the distinctive features of our potential purchase. From the first lines it becomes clear that this is a 10 nm processor with the ability to dive to a depth of up to 30 m, it is small, it supports 4 generation networks .. okay, let’s switch the language to English. nine0005

We are promised 8 cores up to 5.2 GHz and small cores up to 4 GHz, which is even higher than the release sample. The processor supports overclocking, DDR4 and DDR5 memory types depending on the motherboard, but there are limitations. The video card in the first PCI Express slot will not work, and only high-performance ones will work in others. The second important aspect is DDR5 support. It looks like only MSI motherboards will be able to downclock this memory for a successful start. Gain courage, order, wait, check. nine0005

Test stand and features of the engineer’s work

As expected, ASUS Rog Maximus Z690 Hero freezes on postcode 28, and in TUF Gaming Z690-Plus D4 the video card in the first slot does not work, only in the last one. In addition to the 3080 Ti, we tested the GTX 1050 and even the Radeon HD 6970. All work, but keep in mind, the warning would not just be written like that. The first M.2 slot on our board also works.

Well, there is a launch, everything works, and so as not to be bored, we will add rivals to our engineer. 5700X and 5800X are more expensive on the same AliExpress, but the boards are cheaper. It turns out that this is an alternative for about the same budget. 12600K will be more expensive and 12400 cheaper. For the sake of interest, we took the first one, but we will also mention 12400. Well, without the release 12900K is indispensable.

  • that QXJE has the same number of cores as the release i9: 8 large and 8 small. With all loaded streams, the turbo boost frequency of the first reaches 4 GHz, and the low ones — 3 GHz. With a single-threaded load, the maximum frequency of productive cores can reach 4.6 GHz, and energy efficient — 3.4 GHz. I mean, the promised 5.2 and 4 GHz are not even close here. nine0005

    Stock

    Synthetic tests

    Aida64. Here we see that our engineer demonstrates the low speed of the caches of the first two levels, the latency is much higher, and the throughput is lower. Especially the reading speed of L1. On the release i9, it is 70% higher, which clearly does not fit into the difference in processor frequencies. But maybe the engineer doesn’t understand Aida?

    No, CPU-Z i9 is 1.5 times faster in the multi-threaded test, with a 25% difference in frequency. In a single thread, the difference is also 2 times greater than it should be. nine0005

    Cinebench R23 shows the same anomaly. We have already encountered a similar problem. Some 12th gen Intel processors show a similar performance drop when undervolted. Perhaps our engineer has the same problem, but it is not corrected by increasing the voltage, and we are not alone.

    Here is another owner of the engineering 12900K, and he has almost the same results in Cinebench.

    In Premiere Pro, the video card made itself felt. More precisely, its location in another PCI Express slot. On most motherboards, it is greatly reduced, as in our case, we have only four PCIe 3.0 lanes. Although we use Software Encoding in the premiere, the video card still helps, and in fact, we are limited by the bandwidth of its slot. nine0005

    Heat generation and consumption

    Good start, isn’t it? We have processor cores that demonstrate performance at the level of the previous generation, and the video card is limited to a truncated slot.

    Well, at least in the stress test, the liquid cooling system can easily cope with its 16 cores, which, due to the low frequency, do not require high voltage, which cannot be said about the release 12900K, which reached the maximum temperature in a couple of seconds, and the 5800X is not cold is. nine0005

    Tests in games

    Cyberpunk, graphics preset: ultra ray tracing, RT reflections disabled, DLSS — ultra performance, high crowd density. SMT patch included for 5800X. It was expected. The low frequency of the cores with their low performance could not but affect the gaming performance. The Engineer is not only weaker than the 12600K, it is even inferior to the i5-12400 with simpler memory, which we recently tested on various motherboards. And this is in a game that parallels well. What will be next? nine0005

    Far Cry 6, ultra preset, DXR shadows and reflections on, HD textures off, FSR performance. And this is no better. Not only is the FPS again worse than on any of the processors in comparison, and the 12400 will also be faster, but also the GPU load is the highest. It jumps around 90%, while at 12900K the video card renders 37% more frames, and at the same time it is less loaded. The truncated PCI Express slot clearly affects here.

    Shadow of Lara. Highest preset, resolution modifier 20%, 600p. It is clear that it is impossible to completely unload the video card by lowering the resolution. Many calculations either do not depend on it or are weakly coupled. But one-fifth of 600p? In the game of 2018, we clearly did not expect to get an emphasis on the 3080 Ti, but we got it. And in moments when there is no emphasis on the GPU, the engineer demonstrates a third lower FPS than the release i9.

    StarCraft II, all settings maxed out. Good news: there is no emphasis on the video card. Bad news: The 12900K has 1.5 times the FPS of the Engineer. Yes, even a ryzen 5600 or i3-12100 would have performed better than him.

    Total War Saga: Troy, ultra preset, unit size and grass detail — extreme, resolution scaling and anti-aliasing — minimum. Maybe an engineer would show himself well in this game, which can perfectly parallelize on a large number of cores, but alas, due to limitations, the 3080 Ti cannot even give out 60 FPS in a low resolution. nine0005

    CS:GO, Minimum settings with high quality textures. Just think, but in the counter PCI Express 3.0 x4 also acts as a strong limiter for the video card. While rendering 500 FPS with 12900K the video card is half loaded, with QXJE it sometimes cannot even give out 300 frames per second. But even if we compare the FPS during the emphasis on the CPU, the release i9 shows 1.5 times the performance.

    On average across all games, there is no need to understand how absurdly poor performance an i9 engineering sample demonstrates-12900K. It is either weaker than the i5-12400, or it will run into the capabilities of the video card, where it should not. In game terms, it is completely uninteresting.

    In terms of production applications, it will be better than the 5800X if your tasks do not include heavy use of the graphics card. As the Adobe Premiere Pro example showed, the PCI Express limitation is fatal.

    Comparison of the video core

    As for the built-in, this is the same UHD 770, which completely matches the release one in terms of performance. In stock, it has a frequency 50 MHz lower, but it also chases perfectly. nine0005

    Overclocking

    And since we’re talking about overclocking, let’s quickly go over it.

    No surprises with the 5800X. The memory took the standard 3800 MHz in 1 to 1 mode with the first timing of 14. The cores were overclocked through Curve Optimizer.

    Overclocking of 12600K and 12900K cores is the same. 5 GHz — large, 4 — small, but the engineer took 4.6 and 3.9 GHz, respectively. It does not react at all to a change in the frequency of the ring bus. From memory, all three took the same overclocking 3900 MHz CL15. We made the same setup for everyone, focusing on the most unfortunate of the three — i9-12900K.

    Engineer works stably at 4 GHz, but then how lucky. The acceleration of its nuclei was limited by temperature. As you can see, it generates more heat at the same voltage as the release sample, and with equal power consumption, we can say that its cover or internal thermal interface will be even better.

    Synthetic tests

    There is little positive in Aida, we still see slower caches, especially in terms of delays. With the first level, it’s completely a disaster. nine0005

    In CPU-Z, the engineer got a little closer to 12900K in the multi-threaded test due to more overclocking, but still close with the i5.

    In Cinebench, the gap to the release i9 has also narrowed, but it is 40% faster in the single-threaded test, despite the 9% frequency advantage. This is the i5-11400 level.

    No changes in Premiere Pro, emphasis on the video card.

    Tests in games

    In cyberpunk, overclocking gave an 18% increase to the engineer, which allowed him to reach the level of the stock i5-12400. nine0005

    In Far Cry, FPS increased by 10%, and we reached the limit on the video card, never catching up with the stock 12400. What can we say about other participants?

    In Lara, the increase was 13% on average, and here the emphasis is also on the video card.

    Well, for the first time ever, the 5800X lost to an engineer. They have the same FPS, but less than 1 and 0.1% for ryzen will be lower. True, on Windows 11, ryzens show themselves poorly here, on the “top ten” it would be the other way around.

    In Troy FPS has not changed much. Emphasis on the video card. nine0005

    In counter overclocking gave a 9% increase in FPS, again, without focusing on the GPU, it would have been more, but it’s not our fault that it is.

    PCIe 3.0 x4 vs PCIe 4.0 x16 test with emphasis on the video card

    Before final conclusions, let’s take a look at how the video card will behave at a much higher resolution. Not so long ago, we already showed how devastating a truncated PCI Express can be in combination with a lack of video memory. After all, when it fills up, all data is actively transferred through this same PCI Express slot to RAM. And on many motherboards of the 600 series of chipsets, the second slot is not only cut down to 4 lines, but also has not the 5th or 4th version, but only the 3rd.     This limitation results in a loss of eight times the bandwidth. You can also note that the processor performance in these tests in the release sample is again much higher.

    Despite the sufficiency of video memory, in cyberpunk a cut-down slot leads to a loss of 10% performance in 4K resolution and DLSS in performance mode.

    In Red Dead Redemption 2 at the maximum graphics preset, the difference reaches 13%. Imagine what would happen if there was not enough video memory. nine0005

    In Far Cry 6, FPS drops much more critically. With a normal 3080 Ti processor, it produces up to 30% more frames per second. That is, when buying this engineer, you not only get abnormally weak processor performance, but also a weaker video card, and that’s not all.

    So they tested it, so the engineer went to play on it before going to bed. We play, we play and we feel that the gameplay is ragged. We look at the FPS — everything is stable here. The frequency of the monitor is appropriate. But the picture is torn. We recorded the same segment at 120 FPS with an engineer and a normal processor, and realized what was the matter. A truncated PCI-Express slot leads not only to a decrease in the performance of the video card, but also to frame drops. Either every second frame is skipped, then everything is fine, then three freeze frames in a row. And this is at a stable 120 FPS without even focusing on the video card. nine0005

    Conclusion

    Summing up. It is not known if all the engineers of this early stepping are like that, but the i9s are definitely not suitable for games. Forget it. Frame drops, video card performance degradation, FPS lower than 12400. Do you need it? This engineer is suitable only for specific tasks where multi-threaded performance and embedding for image output are needed. For everything else, there are conventional processors.
