Review and test of the Intel Core i7 processor

HEDT update — the Intel platform has never been so massive and, probably, significant. New «extreme» processors are presented in a wide range from 4 to 18-core solutions. But not only in the cores, happiness and the Skylake-X architecture brought with it an updated technology of inter-core connections, cache redistribution, support for AVX — 512 instructions, improved Turbo Boost and, importantly, a more pleasant price tag for the same number of cores, without talking about about some minus $ 50, the real difference in price between i7 is 6950X and i9 — 7900X is just over $700. But today we digress from the i9 — 7900X and pay attention to the now older eight-core i7 — 7820X, and, perhaps, this particular processor has undeservedly received little attention.

General acquaintance with Skylake — X and Kaby Lake — X

Let’s start with a cursory acquaintance with processors based on the Kaby Lake — X architecture — these are i5 — 7640X and i7 — 7740X, quad-core solutions and almost complete analogues of the same i5 — 7600K and i7 — 7700K. And in fact, there are very few differences from the “stones” we know well, the graphics core is blocked in the new processors, but thanks to this and a more refined crystal production process, i5 — 7640X and i7 — 7740X most often reach high frequencies in overclocking. However, Kaby Lake-X processors have not received the iconic Skylake-X improvements.
Skylake — X processors are conditionally divided into two groups. These are six- and eight-core i7 models, as well as ten or more core models produced under the new i9 brand. The differences between «senior» and «junior» are clearly visible. The processors received fewer PCIe lines 28 versus 44, and the i7-7800X did not receive support for Turbo Boost Max 3.0 and the guaranteed operating frequency of DDR4 RAM is 2400 MHz versus 2666 MHz supported by all other members of the family.

Processors under the new i9 brandstarting with the 10-core i9 7900X, which is already available. The 12-core i9 — 7920X should hit storefronts as early as August 28, and the older models in the line should go on sale as early as September 25.

Skylake Features — X

Inter-Core Connections

Let’s go back a little to the second generation of Intel Core processors, which was introduced at the very beginning of 2011, it was in this generation of «home» processors that a ring bus was used, the advantage of which was simplicity and high speed data transfer from one core to another with minimal delays. But since the data moves along the conditional ring in one direction or another, they still have to go through a certain path and, if we talk about preprocessors with two or eight cores, the ring bus was still relevant, since the latency between moving data from one core to another still remained minimal. To create multi-core systems with more than eight cores on a single chip, two ring buses connected by a high-performance interface were used, but in this case, the delay in data transfer became significant, and by building a ring bus, for example, from twelve and more cores, the latency would become too high. The Skylake-X family processors use a new system of inter-core connections — a mesh network. From the screenshot translated below, it is clearly seen that absolutely every core has communication lines with another core or controller. The transition to a new system of inter-core connections made it possible to reduce latency when transferring data between processor resources, as well as to make multi-core solutions more efficient. An ordinary supermarket will be a good life example for understanding the situation, traffic routes are marked in green. In the case of a honeycomb structure, we can always go from one storefront to another if we know the route and it will take a minimum of time. In the second, we will have to bypass the shop windows in a strictly certain direction along the perimeter, and this takes much more time.

In theory, the new structure greatly reduces latency.

Cache redistribution

The processor specifications most often indicate the amount of L3 cache and we can notice that new processors received it almost half as much, for example, in i7 — 7820X received 11 megabytes of L3 cache, while i7 — 6900K already has 20 megabytes, but it got worse, since the structure of the cache itself was revised.

The reduced L3 cache size is explained by the noticeably quadrupled L2 cache size, which is now one megabyte per core instead of 265 kilobytes, which is good, because L2 is much faster.

But these are not all the changes. The L3 cache is no longer inclusive, that is, information is not duplicated from the L2 cache, as it was before, and this has both positive and negative sides. In the event that one core needs data from another, it will now have to turn to the L2 cache of that core, and this increases delays. On the other hand, during intensive workloads, due to the increased volume of L2 cache, the yard will have to access the slower cache much less often.

Support for AVX — 512

Support for AVX — 512 instructions for vector calculations came from server solutions, recall that earlier AVX2 / 256 instructions were used. The introduction of AVX-512 support doubles the computation speed in applications optimized for this. In practice, AVX instructions are used in video encoding/decoding, 3D modeling, and complex calculations.

Intel Turbo Boost Max 3.0

Intel Turbo Boost 3.0 technology is well known to us from processors based on the Broadwell E architecture. If the classic Turbo Boost 2.0 linearly raises the frequencies of absolutely all cores, Turbo Boost 3.0 can additionally increase the frequency of one of the most successful cores, Turbo Boost Max 3.0, in turn, raises the frequencies of the two most suitable cores at once by 200 MHz. It is also worth noting that single-threaded tasks will be executed on the fastest core.

DDR4 support — 2666

All processors on the new architecture, except for the «younger» i7 — 7800X, received official support for DDR4 — 2666 memory. And if this is not so important for typical home use, you can safely overclock the memory to more impressive results, then for exclusively workstations performing complex calculations with large amounts of data, this is important, because overclocking RAM can lead to unstable system operation.

This is where the iconic differences end.

Briefly about the X299 system logic set

The X299 system logic set has stepped far ahead when compared with the X99. It’s faster thanks to DMI 3.0 communication with the processor, and the chipset-powered ports now operate in PCIe 3.0 mode. The number of PCie lanes has grown from eight to twenty-four, and now motherboard manufacturers can go wild in terms of configuring different motherboard options by installing different controllers. Also, a noticeable difference lies in the support of Intel Optane drives, and Rapid Storage technology has now learned to work with PCIe drives.

Characteristics of Intel Core I7 — 7820X

A production sample of Intel Core i7 — 7820X came to our test. And outwardly, and even in size, the processor is similar to the processors of the Broadwell E family, but significant differences lie inside. Under the heat-dissipating cover, where the place of the previously used metal solder was taken by a plastic thermal interface (thermal paste in other words). To many, this innovation seemed like something terrible, but is it really so, we will figure it out during the analysis of the temperature regime. To analyze the characteristics of the i7 — 7820X, it is best to compare with the eight-core predecessor i7 — 6 is Basic frequency, GHC 3.2 3.6 The maximum frequency in turbojem, GHC 3.7 4.341 4.0051 4.0051 4.51 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 4.0051 The maximum frequency of Turbo Boost Max 3.0, GHC 4.0 4.5 Unlocked factor is is TDP, VT TDP, VT SSE4.1/4.2, AVX 2.0 SSE4.1/4.2, AVX 2.0, AVX-512 PACING LGA 2013-3 LGA 9059

In addition to architectural improvements, much higher clock frequencies, we got a $500 lower price for the processor, and this, I want to note, is a very important indicator for us — consumers.

Testing Intel Core i7 — 7820X

I think you should immediately draw your attention to questions that may arise. There is no comparative testing with Broadwell-E processors due to the lack of the necessary processor and motherboard in the edition. To compare the performance, an AMD Ryzen 7 1700 was supplied by the opponent, at the moment it is the most multi-threaded “stone” in the edition. There are no overclocking tests in benchmarks and working applications, testing of the overclocking potential of Skylake — X will be carried out separately. The frequency of the RAM was fixed at 2800 MHz, the fact is that the motherboard on the X370 was delayed and it was decided to use the X.M.P profile. 9has become more accurate, it also demonstrates both multi-threaded and single-threaded performance.

Testing demonstrates ~20% superiority of i7 — 7820X over the opponent. These data can be considered indicative and further you will see for yourself.

Testing in real work tasks

There are not so many benchmarks that show performance in real conditions, and we will start with them. I want to note that the time format in seconds is used for rendering. Corona Benchmark 1.3 demonstrates the performance during rendering of a 3D scene, a distinctive feature of the benchmark is that it is built on Corona Render. The performance during video encoding is demonstrated by the X265 Benchmark, from the name it becomes clear that the H.265 codec is used.

Next, we check the performance exclusively with working applications. Final rendering of an 11-minute video in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017 without additional plug-ins in H.264 and H.265. In Adobe After Effects CC 2017, we rendered a short Underwater scene in original resolution, but with the number of frames increased to 60 fps. For testing WinRAR was used for file archiving speed, but we do not trust the built-in benchmark and tested the performance when archiving a folder with 3.5 gigabytes of files ranging in size from 2 KB to 580 MB.

If we analyze the test results, then the i7 — 7820X is about 31% more productive than the opponent. And this is one of the reasons not to trust the benchmarks, because there the difference was ~ 20%. Synthetic tests are synthetic for that, because they dismantle performance in ideal conditions, which are almost always unattainable, and we trust testing in real work tasks more.

Testing in games

When the i7-7820X was released, the most powerful video card was the AMD Radeon RX470 4GB. For this reason, in order to increase dependence on the processor, we were forced to reduce the resolution to 720p and set the graphics to medium instability with anti-aliasing disabled. The frame rate was fixed by the FRAP program for two minutes in the most similar scenes in the company. AMD software version at the time of testing is 17.7.2. Since it is difficult to attribute the processor to the “gaming” class, we decided not to focus on performance in games for a long time.

Temperature conditions

The replacement of solder with a plastic thermal interface in the new processors of the HEDT segment caused a lot of controversy and we simply could not help but check the temperature conditions. Let me remind you that one of the best air cooling systems Noctua NH — D15 is working on cooling the processor. The temperature in the room is ~33 degrees. In all modes, the average value of the processor temperature was recorded within half an hour after the start of the test. NT-h2 serves as a thermal interface. The graphs use the average temperature since the start of the test.

Testing was carried out in the following modes:

  1. The processor is not overclocked. The system is idle, only the standard Windows 10 services are active. The fan speed is set to a minimum.
  2. The processor is not overclocked. The system is idle, only standard Windows 10 services are active. Fan speed is ∼1000 rpm.
  3. The processor is not overclocked. The system is idle, only the standard Windows 10 services are active. The fan speed is set to maximum.
  4. The processor is not overclocked. View streaming FullHD video. The fan speed is set to minimum.
  5. The processor is not overclocked. Activated system stress test in AIDA64. Fan speed ∼1000 rpm.
  6. The processor is not overclocked. Activated system stress test in AIDA64. The fan speed is set to maximum.
  7. Processor overclocked to 4.5 GHz. Activated system stress test in AIDA64. Fan speed ∼1000 rpm.
  8. Processor overclocked to 4.5 GHz. Activated system stress test in AIDA64. The fan speed is set to maximum.
  9. The processor is not overclocked. Activated system stress test using LinX 0.7.3 AVX instructions. The fan speed is set to maximum.

Did the replacement of metal solder with a plastic thermal interface under the processor cover have a strong effect? And you know what I want to say? Not really. The processor works stably in the factory-set operating mode, only the temperatures are now higher, as are the requirements for cooling systems. If you are satisfied with the factory mode of operation, any top tower will cope with its cooling. And if you are seriously thinking about using a processor for overclocking, then without using at least serial 240 mm LSS, you are nowhere to be found. It was the cooling system that made me stop experimenting with overclocking, the processor still has potential, and the frequency for operation without throttling was fixed at only 4.5 GHz with a decrease in frequency during the execution of AVX instructions by 500 MHz.

Overclocking

Alas, it didn’t work out to draw the full potential of the processor, we ran into the cooling system from time to time and the maximum operating frequency for us was 4.5 GHz. We will prepare material on overclocking Skylake-X processors soon using a serial LSS.

Impressions of the Intel Core i7 — 7820X and conclusions

The Skylake — X architecture has brought many changes and this is far from a banal transfer of the already familiar architecture to the HEDT platform. Intel has revised the core interconnection system, redistributed the cache and, although, in general, it has become smaller, but it has become faster, added support for AVX — 512 instructions, which double the performance in supported applications, thanks to an improved process technology, we get higher clock speeds out of the box , and the new Turbo Boost Max 3. 0 has learned to additionally raise the frequencies of two cores. But in addition to these changes, the pricing policy has also been revised, and the price tag for eight-core processors has dropped from $1100 to $600 and, I think, this is one of the most significant changes.

Is it worth building a system on an Intel Core i7 — 7820X? For gaming, web surfing and typical household tasks, it is redundant, for these tasks you should look towards the i7 — 7700K or the upcoming Coffee Lake, which will bring a lot of new things. Intel Core i7 — 7820X is revealed «in full» in video editing, working with 3D and VR content, complex calculations and streaming. This is a great solution for a workstation.

Well, since the Intel Core i7 — 7800X received lower frequencies and did not receive Turbo Boost Max 3.0, the Intel Core i7 — 7820X automatically becomes the best in the line in terms of price / performance ratio.

Introduction

The Skylake-X line of processors is currently not fully represented. Intel introduced younger models — Core i7-7740X, Core i5-7640X; medium — Core i9-7900X, Core i7-7820X, Core i7-7800X, and left the older ones for later.

But it is the older models with more than ten cores that are of real interest, because they outperform previous processors in terms of the number of cores. Oddly enough, but younger models do not at all arouse interest among buyers, and there are objective reasons for that. First, they are no better than the more affordable platform based on Intel Z270 chipsets. Secondly, the amount of switching costs is significant, since you will have to buy both a processor and a new motherboard for a minor increase in performance without overclocking. Thirdly, Core i7-7740X and Core i5-7640X, with the exception of the base frequency, overclock in the same way as processors based on LGA 1151.

It turns out that the i7-7800X processor becomes the entry ticket. Alas, we did not receive it for testing, but we got the opportunity to test the i7-7820X. The price of this processor does not bite, and its characteristics will fully satisfy any user for the next five years.

All the nuances of the Skylake-X architecture have long been known, and I would like to draw your attention to the power consumption of the new platform. Many sites have already noted the increased power consumption of all Skylake-X processors for no apparent reason.

It is worth explaining how Intel cleverly bypassed the previous limit of 140 watts. For the LGA 2066, the specifications list a figure of 160 watts of peak load in a single processor configuration, which means only one thing — the average power consumption can easily reach this figure. But do not forget about the new AVX 512 instructions. Yes, their list is large and not all of them are supported by Skylake-X, but only a part. Another thing is server processors, where the situation is reversed — with the exception of a couple of specific AVX 512, the rest are supported. So, peak loads with AVX 512 briefly exceed 160 watts.

recommendations

So how should you display the correct power consumption of Skylake-X? From my point of view, it is necessary to focus on the average value, not forgetting to repeat that at the peak you can safely add up to 50 watts from above.

Tricks of motherboard manufacturers, just like that and nothing else. According to Intel specifications, there is a certain list of obligations on the part of manufacturers. Boards must support Intel VR13.0 PWM. And according to her, VCCIN is controlled by the processor bus SVID (Serial Voltage ID). In other words, the voltage converter on the board must output VCCIN (nominal input voltage) as requested by the processor. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, depending on the BIOS version and the brand of the motherboard, such control can be disabled. But for sure, some manufacturers do this by default under the phrase Enhanced Turbo or SVID Control — Auto. As a result, operating modes are violated, and overall productivity grows. Therefore, on different boards with the same settings, the results are different. What can I say, changing the BIOS sometimes brings dividends.

Naturally, all this is due to the blindness of Intel or the banal unwillingness to notice. Alas, in order to return the processor to the correct mode, you have to poke around in the BIOS for a long time and carefully. To understand and evaluate the difference, I will give an example: Enhanced Turbo is activated — the average power consumption is 190 watts, disabled — 145 watts. Of course, the speed has increased, more precisely by 6-7%, but at the same time, the growth in energy consumption has also grown, and not by 6-7%, but by as much as 30%! Draw conclusions whether you are satisfied with the activated cheat in the BIOS. Naturally, with banal overclocking, we also increase power consumption, but we do it differently.

Proper acceleration — almost completely manual mode. BIOS intelligence is sufficient to correctly adjust other voltages besides Vcore. And I highly recommend practicing overclocking with setting Vcore and sometimes Vdimm manually, let the board do the rest for you. We have achieved stability, look at the tensions and remember them. You can then replace the words AUTO with this data.

Intel Core i7-7820X:

Maximum processor temperature depending on voltage:

The load was created by the LinX 0.7.0 application with libraries for AVX. The test was run at least ten times with a task size of 25,000. Two Minebea fans with fixed speeds (~2000 rpm) are installed on the CBO heatsink. The new CPU was tested not only with high voltage, but also with low voltage, in order to determine the operating voltage fork. The frequency range according to the specifications is from 3.6 to 4.5 GHz.

Let’s move on to energy consumption. Maximum power consumption of Intel Core i7-7820X depending on voltage:

Last time I showed you the figures for the peak power consumption of the ten-core Core i9-7900X, which could be pretty surprising, now I will show you the average power consumption.

There is a difference in overclocking behavior of the new processors, and it is expressed by a lower quality i7-7820X chip. At low voltages, it stumbles at a frequency of 3500 MHz. For further overclocking, I had to immediately cross the step of 0.075 V, and then it reached a stable 0.975 V up to 3.8 GHz. Then the fight against heat generation began. And the mediocre heat-conducting material played a key role. Moreover, the condition of the thermal paste is worse than that of the i9-7900X. This is easy to understand by looking at voltage and temperature and comparing these readings between CPUs.

I think it’s time to remove the heat spreader cover and see what Skylake-X can do, but we’ll leave that for later.
