AMD Radeon RX 550 Review

Introduction

So far 2017 has been a huge success for AMD.
With the release of the Ryzen processors, AMD has taken the CPU market by storm and have put some serious pressure on Intel in the mainstream and also high-end market.
Last year, AMD introduced the first Polaris generation of GPUs and about two weeks ago, AMD revealed the Radeon RX 500 series which is a refresh of their mainstream and budget offerings based on the existing Polaris architecture.
The new RX 500 series come with bumped up clock-speeds and slightly adjusted prices.
The Radeon RX 500 series takes aim at the mainstream and lower-end market while RX Vega which will be released in the current quarter is aimed at the high-end market.

AMD is targeting the new RX 500 series cards at PC gamers who are on a 2 year old graphics card and have not made the move to 14nm technology.
Some of these PC gamers are still on 28nm technology and are using graphics cards such as the Radeon 300/200 series and will benefit greatly by upgrading to 14nm technology.
So in the RX 500 series, we have the RX 580, RX 570, RX 560, and RX 550 and the prices will be from $79 and up to $229.
Today, we will be looking at the Radeon RX 550 that retails at $80 and is designed for PC gamers who are mainly into eSports or for people that build HTPCs.

The Radeon RX 550 does not require any additional power connection so installing it is as easy as plug and play concept.
AMD says that the Radeon RX 550 is engineered for smooth 1080p/60fps in eSports titles, and this makes the Radeon RX 550 an excellent upgrade over integrated graphics processors.
The Radeon RX 550 comes with many features and capabilities found in other Radeon RX 500 series products such as Free Sync, HDMI 2.0, DP 1.4 HBR,
HEVC 4K decoding, Radeon Chill, Radeon ReLive, and much more.

Let’s talk a bit more about the pricing of the RX 550. AMD has priced the Radeon RX 550 at $80 which I strongly think it’s priced too high and should have been more around $70.
The reason why I think the RX 550 is priced too high at $80 is because
the RX 460 which also retails for $80 and also doesn’t require a PCIe power connector, is much faster than the RX 550 while costing the same.
People who are on a budget will not being going with the much slower RX 550 over the similarly priced RX 460 that has 896 Stream processors compared to 512 Stream processors in the RX 550.
If the RX 550 was about $10 less, it would have been perfect and it would have no problems selling like hot cakes.

MSI RX 550 Aero ITX 2GB

AMD has sent us the MSI RX 550 Aero ITX OC 2GB model for our review.
This card comes with a slight factory overclock of 1203 MHz boost clocks which shouldn’t make too much of a difference in performance.
With factory overclocked cards, keep in mind that you’re often paying for a better cooler than for the factory overclock.

As far as dimensions go, this card measures 155mm long, 112mm tall, and 38mm wide and it weighs around 285g.
This is a compact card and weighs dramatically less than a full size graphics card. It comes with three display outputs, an HDMI 2.0 port, a Dual-Link DVI port, and a DisplayPort.

Since the Radeon RX 550 is an entry-level card, testing will be conducted by comparing the RX 550 against the Intel HD 630 iGPU to see who offers the best gaming performance.
We have decided to use the Ryzen 7 1700X and i7-7700K because both of these processors perform on par and offer about equal performance in gaming.
We want to eliminate any CPU bottleneck as much as possible. We understand that people who will be buying the RX 550 will most likely not use a i7-7700K or Ryzen 7 1700X processor.

All of the testing is done with an ambient temperature of ~22C and the CPUs have the power saving features disabled in the BIOS.
Also, the testing was done on a fresh install of Windows 10 64-bit and we made sure there were as few processes running as possible by disabling a bunch of unnecessary services that come with Windows 10.

In gaming, we will be testing some games at 1080p and 720p and the settings will be set to high or low depending on how demanding the game is.
Idle temperature will be measured after leaving the computer idle for 20 minutes with no additional applications running in the background and
load temperature will be measured by playing Counter-Strike GO on max settings for 20 minutes at 1080p.

Gaming Benchmarks:

+ Ashes of the Singularity

+ Mass Effect Andromeda

+ Watch Dogs 2

+ Battlefield 1

+ Far Cry Primal

+ GTA V

+ DOTA 2

+ Counter Strike GO

+ The Witcher 3

Temperature

The MSI Radeon RX 550 Aero ITX stays relatively cool in idle mode.
When leaving the computer at complete idle, the card idles at around 32 Celsius.
When playing Counter Strike GO on max settings at 1080p, the temperature jumps to around 50 Celsius or so.
Once I got out of Counter Strike GO, the temperature dropped back down to around 32-34 C within a few minutes.

Gaming Performance Results

Looking at the Ashes of the Singularity benchmark, the RX 550 destroyed the Intel HD 630.
The RX 550 performed about four times more than the Intel HD 630.

In Mass Effect Andromeda, the RX 550 outperformed the Intel HD 630 big time.

Once again, the RX 550 wrecked the Intel HD 630 in Watch Dogs 2.

And again the RX 550 obliterated Intel HD 630 in Battlefield 1.

Here we see the AMD Radeon RX 550 demolish the Intel HD 630 in Far Cry Primal.

Moving on to GTA V, the RX 550 again bulldozed the Intel HD 630.

The RX 550 annihilated Intel’s HD 630 in DOTA 2.

Once again, the RX 550 disfigured Intel’s HD 630 in CSGO.

Last but not least, the RX 550 crushed Intel’s HD 630 in Witcher 3.

Value & Conclusion

The Radeon RX 550 offers excellent performance in many popular DX11 and DX12 titles and it certainly
crushes Intel’s HD 630 in all the games that I tested.
It can achieve a well playable FPS in 720p with medium settings in most games.
The Radeon RX 550 is a strong entry-level card that is perfect for eSports gamers, and also for people who are into building HTPCs.
If you hate to rely on Intel’s iGPU whether it is for gaming or content creation applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Premier,
then the Radeon RX 550 is perfect in that regard.

The RX 550 performs exactly as advertised and it has no problems handling eSports titles at smooth 1080p/60fps.
eSports titles demand 60fps+ and you can’t rely on an iGPU to play these games.
As we saw in the previous page, the RX 550 achieved well above 90fps in CS GO on max settings while Intel’s HD 630 struggled to maintain 30fps.
This card can also handle more demanding games such as Battlefield 1 at 1080p on low settings or GTA V on high settings.
It certainly has enough horse power to handle modern games at lower settings just fine.

If you are running an iGPU such as the HD 630 or HD 530 and struggle with getting playable fps in eSports games, then strongly consider getting the RX 550.
The Radeon RX 550 comes with many modern features such as Free Sync, HDMI 2.0, DP 1.4 HBR, HEVC 4K decoding, Radeon Chill and Radeon ReLive.
If you are building an HTCP and want a decent low profile card with a good cooler that won’t overheat, then the MSI RX 550 Aero might be what you need.
It runs relatively cool at 32 Celsius in idle mode and stays under 50 Celsius in gaming.

Pros:

+ Great For eSports Gaming

+ Outstanding Performance

+ Crushed Intel’s HD 630 iGPU

+ Future-Proof Features

+ Runs Very Cool

Cons:

— Expensive

My only issue with the RX 550 is the price.
The pricing of the RX 550 needs to come down by about $10 in my opinion.
Currently, the RX 550 retails for about the same as the RX 460.
The RX 460 is a much stronger video card than the RX 550 and it also doesn’t require a PCIe power connector so people have no
reason to go with the RX 550 when the RX 460 is much faster while costing the same. If AMD brings the price down to $70,
this card will sell really well. AMD is going to have a hard time convincing people to get the RX 550 at $80.
With all that being said, the Radeon RX 550 easily deserve our Gold Award.

Radeon RX 550 — Incredible Graphics Card

Radeon RX 550 2GB — a video card for online games — that’s what I thought when I started testing it. But everything changed as soon as I tried to overclock it and played modern games, including Far Cry 5 at a resolution of 1920×1080. But everything is in order. I present to you a seemingly weak, but in fact fraught with a huge potential, the GIGABYTE Radeon RX 550 2GB video card. We have an article where actual video cards are collected in the budget segment up to 30 thousand.

Radeon RX 550 Specifications

  • The frequency of work GPU: 1183 MHz
  • The number of stream processors: 512
  • Textural blocks (TMU): 9000
  • Technic process GPU: 14 Nm
  • Video memory: 2 GB
  • Video memory: GDDR5
  • Frequencies of video memory: 1750 MHz
  • memory: 128 BIT
  • Energy consumption: 35 Watt
  • Videos: DVI-D (only digital), HDMI, Displayport
  • 9000 9000 9000 9000 9000 9000. : 170 mm, full size, occupies two expansion slots

Graphics card design and element base GIGABYTE’s

RX 550 is quite compact, but at the same time it has a fairly large fan with WindForce branded notches. I don’t know how much the cooling efficiency increases from this unusual shape, but it looks very stylish and aggressive. Noise starts to emit starting from 60% of the maximum speed, namely at 2400 rpm. The video card has a passive cooling mode, which means that while you are watching videos, editing photos and surfing the Internet, you will not hear it at all. In games, the fan speed is usually around 2000 rpm. I will say right away that it cools perfectly, even despite the rather small and, most importantly, very thin aluminum radiator, without any signs of copper at its base.

Does it only remind me of an intel box heatsink? Only in GIGABYTE it is one and a half times thinner and slightly wider. But don’t be alarmed, for such a video card it is more than enough, even when overclocked to 1420 MHz.

As you may have guessed, entry-level graphics cards never have metal backplates. And this one is no exception. The video card is light and cold, so it does not need it. There are several batteries on the back side, there is no video memory on it, the cooling system is attached to the board with bolts with springs to protect the board from damage.

There are only 3 video outputs. It is unlikely that anyone will need more. There is also DVI, but exclusively digital, so an old monitor with an analog VGA connector cannot be connected through an adapter. Please keep this in mind when buying a video card. If there is no desire to change the monitor, you will have to buy a converter.

The heart of the video card is the Lexa chip (Polaris 12). 512 stream processors seems like a very small number, but let’s not forget about the improvement of architectures and increasing frequencies. Well, I’ll talk about this a little lower when testing games.

This chip is powered by a pretty good, for our small, power system. Probably already loved by everyone non-humming chokes Magic R22 in the amount of 4 pieces and solid capacitors. The power supply system of the videochip is not cooled by anything and I don’t see the point in this. Even if we take into account that the Power Limit of the video chip can be raised by 75%, this is still not enough to make the RX 550 mosfets fog up.
This time the video memory is Hynix.

Tests in games and overclocking

The standard frequencies of the video card are 1183 MHz GPU and 1750 MHz VRAM. To be honest, negligible values for the POLARIS GPU. Here’s how GTA 5 runs at these frequencies, almost on ultra with FXAA and effects disabled.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLIiEbnp61w

———

Everything seems to be fine 39 — 45 fps, quite playable, but when night falls and it rains, the frame rate drops to 31- 39, which is no longer encouraging. Look here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJUnm8Cam5s

———

1183 MHz is a very low figure for the Polaris architecture. The video chip can work quite stably, like the RX 580 at a frequency of 1420 MHz. Although the video memory is HYNIX, it runs well up to 2000 MHz without artifacts and game crashes. But that’s all, the limit. The slider in Afterburner doesn’t go any further.

See how GTA 5 gameplay changes with this overclock. Even during the day, even at night, even in the rain, even in the snow, about 50 fps, and even more during the day.

GTA 5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ECATk5BmW0

———

I’ll tell you right away about overclocking. It is completely safe for a video card, because this frequency is quite suitable for this series of chips. Video memory at 2000 MHz also does not overload itself. There is no overheating of the video card in this mode. Above 70 degrees, the temperature has never risen in any game with the automatic fan rotation control, embedded in the video card at the factory.
Well, let’s continue the tests in games.

Battlefield 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO95gFw47K4

———

Battle is going great. 42-54 fps depending on what is happening on the screen and almost all settings on the «High» GT 1030 can’t do that, even when overclocked. A comfortable game in the First World War is provided to you even in the infantry, even in the tank.

DiRT 4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXBtqfTT97o

———

Rally, pumped cars, dirt, dust from under the wheels and more than 60 frames per second ON HIGH SETTINGS. The RADEON RX 550 2 GB is ready to provide you with all this.

Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDB2gYURALE

———

At high 60 fps. Yes, the game is not the newest, but with good graphics.

Far Cry 5

https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=e2brICjVbts

———

Incredibly, the RX 550 can run Far Cry 5 on high settings for over 30 fps at 1920×1080. If you need more, you can always lower the settings. But the very fact that the video card from the “bottom” launches Far Cry 5 at high settings is already amazing.

Mass Effect Andromeda

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq8ebm7PymA

———

Mass Effect Andromeda is next. Here the video card shows a stable 42-49 frames per second. It’s a pity that with the minimum settings in 1920×1080. But it’s very nice to play and Mass Effect looks pretty nice at minimum wages.

Project CARS 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVD7qMKiyrE

———

Let’s continue the theme of racing. Project CARS 2 is next in line. With a rather good appearance, you can play it at more than 60 fps in good weather and 45-51 in the rain. Excellent result

Assassin’s Creed Origins

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Stf7jCnMkSA

———

Another modern game is next. And this time on medium settings. Sand dunes, oases, priests and pyramids, assassins and pharaohs, camels and Egyptians. All this will give you the RX 550 overclocking.

HITMAN

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=779WkFtNrno

Hitman is also doing well in medium.

Need for Speed Payback

Do you want to drive from the police, participate in street racing, or cut through the impassability, forcing your rivals to swallow the dust. Here is NFS Payback for you. Here’s the RX 550 for you. Car keys and go. It’s good that the two-liter, ahem two-gigabyte tank of this video card allows you to play at high settings.

Witcher 3

In the video, I decided to show how many frames per second the RX 550 will show depending on the graphics settings. What settings to play with is up to you. What to choose image quality or frames per second?

Watch Dogs 2

Unfortunately this RX 550 game doesn’t lend itself well. Even at the minimum settings, there are drawdowns below 30 fps.

Result

The Radeon RX 550 is a good graphics card. On it you can play almost all modern games at a resolution of 1920×1080 with stable overclocking up to 1420 MHz, if not at high, then certainly at low, with an acceptable frame rate. Esports disciplines are great on this video card and the price is affordable for everyone. I hope we helped you with your choice. It was a PRO REVIEW — just about the complex, interesting about everything.

2020 AMD Radeon RX 550 4GB, RX 550 2GB and RX 550 640SP Gaming Test: Minimal and Hardcore Only — Testing

Amd radeon rx 550 red dragon tests in games

Recall that the older accelerators of the Radeon RX 500 series cannot be called really new. In fact, these are the same Radeon RX 400 with slightly increased frequencies and Power Limit. And for the RX 560 — also with a fully unlocked array of computing units.

But among this lineup was a real novelty — the Radeon RX 550. Initially, it was based on the Polaris 12 GPU with eight compute CUs. At the output, we get 512 stream processors, 32 texture and 16 raster units. This configuration is twice as weak as the characteristics of the RX 560.

Later, versions appeared on a stripped-down Polaris 21, which was left with 640 stream processors and 40 texture units. In both cases, they are assisted by 2 or 4 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 128-bit bus. Video cards have a TDP of only 50W, and they do without an additional power connector. In general, there are four variants of the RX 550 on the market at once. Moreover, younger modifications can have increased frequencies of the chip and video memory. Therefore, before buying a specific model, be sure to study in detail all the performance characteristics.

Today we will be entertained by 3 video cards at once. One of them is the 2 GB AREZ Phoenix Radeon RX 550 . AREZ is an ASUS brand that was used for models based on AMD chips. If you remember, the reason for its appearance was the terms of the NVIDIA partner program, according to which companies participating in it cannot use similar brands for video cards from NVIDIA and other companies.

But let’s get back to the video card itself. It has a small size, a simple cooling system with an aluminum heatsink and one double ball bearing axial fan, as well as three digital video outputs. The Polaris 21 GPU and SK hynix memory chips are clocked at 1071MHz and 6GHz respectively. In tests, the temperature of the GPU did not exceed 66°C.

The second test participant is ASUS Radeon RX 550 2 GB. Before us is a typical representative of budget solutions: compact dimensions, a cooler in the form of an aluminum blank and a single fan, as well as the necessary video outputs. The Polaris 12 GPU and Elpida memory chips run at 1183MHz and 7GHz respectively. In games, the temperature of the GPU peaked up to 73 ° C.

The above accelerators are courtesy of the CompX online store, where you will find new and used parts at a reasonable price.

The third runner will be the 4GB SAPPHIRE PULSE RX 550 in the OEM version. We thank BRAIN for it. In length, it goes well with Mini-ITX motherboards and occupies one and a half expansion slots in the case. The cooling is unremarkable: a milled piece of aluminum and one 80mm propeller. The set of interfaces is standard. The Polaris 12 GPU and Micron memory chips run at 1206 MHz and 6 GHz respectively. In tests, the temperature of the GPU did not exceed 73°C.

Now let’s recall the configuration of the test bench. It is based on a 6-core 6-thread processor Intel Core i5-9400F with a maximum frequency of 4.1 GHz and a TDP of 65 W.

Cooled it with a tower cooler Antec A400 RGB . It has a fairly simple and reliable mounting system, reminiscent of standard AMD clips. All platforms use a complete plastic frame with four latches. During tests, the temperature of the hottest core did not exceed a modest 55 ° C.

These and other components are installed on the BIOSTAR B360GT3S Racing motherboard. A nice bonus for its customers will be the Vivid LED DJ lighting, which is presented in the form of seven LEDs in the sound path area. Plus, there are a couple of pads for LED strips.

We have plenty of RAM, because the 16 GB G. SKILL TRIDEN Z Neo kit is enough for any games and settings. The dice worked at the standard frequency of 2666 MHz with timings of 18-18-18-43.

For the operating system and games used SATA SSD Patriot P200 2 TB. Endurance TBW is 1000 TB. This is approximately equivalent to writing 913 GB per day for 3 years.

In order not to worry about the quality of power supply of all nodes, we took the “gold” Antec EAG 650G PRO Gold for 650 watts. The seven-year warranty speaks eloquently about the reliability of the source.

The aforementioned «pieces of iron» were placed in building 9 without any problems0003 Antec P5 . Inside it is installed one 120-mm fan for intake and exhaust. The front propeller can be supplemented with another fan of the same size or replaced with a 140mm solution.

The image was displayed on a «frameless» 27-inch Ultra HD monitor AOC U2790PQU . Gameplays are recorded by an external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K, i.e. without loss of performance.

These and other components are installed on the BIOSTAR B360GT3S Racing motherboard.

2018 AMD Radeon RX 550 4GB Gameplay Test: A Miracle in the Budget Segment. Page 1 » /> » /> .keyword { color: red; }

Amd radeon rx 550 red dragon tests in games

After testing the gaming capabilities of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 video accelerators in new and current games, of course, it will be interesting to evaluate what the budget AMD Radeon RX 550 4GB is capable of.

Recall that the AMD Radeon RX 500 line was introduced in the spring of 2017, and by and large included the rebranding of the 400 series models. There was also one real novelty — the AMD Radeon RX 550. But bad luck — the first buyers complained about the dampness of the drivers, so the GeForce GT 1030 looked better in some games. Now they say that the situation has improved markedly over the year.

Therefore, the task number 1 of this test will be to check the stability and performance of the Radeon RX 550 with the new driver in current games, hit novelties of the past years and eSports disciplines.

The second task will be to assess the need for 4 GB of VRAM in an entry-level gaming graphics card.

Task #3: Compare the performance of the test Radeon RX 550 with the main competitor at the time of the announcement, i.e. the GeForce GT 1030, as well as with the actual opponent in terms of price, which is the 2 GB GeForce GTX 1050. We just recently released updated gameplay of these video cards, so the results are quite fresh and allow us to draw parallels, especially since they have the same test bench.

For testing, we asked Brain for one of the most affordable 4 GB versions from the ASUS Phoenix series. In general, you need to be extremely careful with the purchase of the Radeon RX 550th. Take, for example, the ASUS lineup. There are 2- and 4-gigabyte versions, which can be clearly seen from the indexes in the title. But what is not visible from the name is the number of stream processors in the GPU: initially at the time of the announcement there were 512 of them, and then versions for 640 appeared, with a corresponding increase in texture units from 32 to 40. The effective frequency of video memory can also be different: the prefix «M7» in the test model indicates a speed of 7 GHz. And in a similar version without this ending, the frequency is 6 GHz. All this affects performance, so be sure to check the specifications before buying.

We can say that we have a top-end version with support for 640 stream processors. The operating frequency of the GPU is 1071 MHz. The memory is recruited from Micron’s GDDR5 chips. A simple cooler with one axial fan on a double ball bearing is responsible for cooling, and the card does not require additional power.

Now for the test bench. In this case, we are interested in the capabilities of the video card itself, so in games we should focus on its performance, and not be limited to the capabilities of other components. It is for this reason that we used an overclocked 5GHz Intel Core i7-7740X processor, a Thermaltake cooled CBO, a 16GB set of Patriot Viper 4 RAM in dual-channel mode at 3200MHz, and an Apacer PANTHER AS330 SSD for demanding games and operating system. Gameplays were recorded by an external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer HD 2 without performance loss.

DOTA 2 at maximum settings in DirectX 11 also fits in 1 GB of video memory. At the same time, the system without any problems provides smooth gameplay with responsive controls. The average speed was 75 fps, and the rest of the statistics were in the region of 60 FPS.

Auto-selection of settings in Rocket League decided to activate all the effects and select high image quality with anti-aliasing turned off. And all this required less than 1 GB of video memory. The game itself was fun and exciting, with full immersion in the process and without distraction for any problems. The average speed was aiming for 90 FPS, and very rare events did not drop below 56.

Fans of Overwatch can safely choose a medium preset with high texture quality, because it requires only 1.5 GB of video memory. At the same time, there is no drop in performance: the average speed and statistics of rare events are kept within 60-70 FPS, and the frame time graph pleases with directness and calmness.

Thus, esports disciplines do not need even 2 GB of video memory. Let’s see how things are in popular online projects.

If desired, War Thunder can also be run with the Cinema preset, although this is fraught with very rare events at 13 fps and an average speed of 41 FPS. However, even in this mode, only 2 GB of video memory is required. Recall that with the GeForce GT 1030 at the maximum preset, we got an average of 39 frames / s, but with the GeForce GTX 1050 in Cinema mode — as many as 70.

run with high profile graphics settings. In this mode, exactly 2 GB of VRAM is required to maintain an average speed of 80 FPS. Very rare events are 49fps In a similar mode, the GeForce GT 1030 averages 69 FPS, and with the GeForce GTX 1050 we went up to the ultra preset, but got only 49 fps.

If the texture quality is turned up to the maximum without changing other parameters, then a little more than 3 GB of video memory will be required. In our opinion, it is very difficult to notice the difference in the display of objects, especially on different maps. Playability was not particularly affected: statistics show a decrease in very rare events to 36 FPS while increasing the average speed to 110 FPS.

World of Warships is quite playable even with the maximum graphics preset. We averaged 45 FPS. The statistics of rare and very rare events are unsatisfactory, but without monitoring, there are no problems in the gameplay. Perhaps because of the very inertia of the control of the ship and guns. But the competitive GeForce GTX 1050 with the same settings averages over 80 FPS. Her other stats are also much better.

Auto-tuning at Quake Champions offers medium settings with ultra textures and 66% resolution scaling. This is the first game on the list that took almost all 4 GB of VRAM. The average speed was 66 FPS, and very rare events reached 29 fps.

If you manually lower the textures, then the video memory needs a little more than 2 GB. The average speed increases to 86 FPS. The rest of the indicators are at approximately the same level.

What do competitors offer? The GeForce GTX 1050 allows you to select a fully medium preset and get over 100 FPS, although there is not enough video memory, so the statistics of very rare events are worse. With the GeForce GT 1030, I had to settle for low settings with average texture quality and an average speed of 88 FPS.

Autotune in Fortnite Battle Royale recommended choosing a completely low profile. We manually translated the quality of the textures to an epic level. But even in this mode, a little more than 2 GB of video memory is required. The average speed rose to 105 FPS, and the rest of the statistics were around 40.
