TMUs: texture mapping units. This unit was a physical processor separated from the main graphics processing units. It is able to distort a bitmap image, and also to resize it, to rotate it and to place it as a texture onto a plane of a specific 3D model.

ROPs: render output units. The other name of this unit is raster operations pipeline. This hadware component is taking pixel and texel information, and processing it through vector and matrix operations. The result will be a depth value or a final pixel. It is able to control antialiasing with the merge of several sample into one pixel.

SM: streaming multiprocessor. These processors are implied in the Kepler’s power efficiency when the GPU is using one unified clock speed.

Overview of the video card nVidia GeForce GT 520

The GeForce GT 520 is a budget video card for the office segment, designed exclusively for the simplest tasks. The video adapter will handle games very poorly due to terrible characteristics and performance (some integrated chips are more powerful than this solution). The tangible advantage of the GT 520 is that it occupies exactly one slot on the motherboard.

Specifications GeForce GT 520

The video card has a very small number of universal stream processors (48), which is even less than the top integrated graphics adapters. The frequency of the video card is also not high and reaches only 810MHz. A small number of streaming chips and low frequency already put an end to the most demanding tasks.

Processor cores 48
Core frequency (MHz) 810MHz
Processor frequency (MHz) 1620
Texture mapping speed (billion/sec) 6.5

Video memory is pretty bad too. Its volume is exactly 1 gigabyte, which will be catastrophically small for modern computer games. The memory frequency is also very low and only reaches 900MHz, modern RAM strips make the video memory of this video card. A weak bus with a bit width of 64 bits completes the picture.

Memory frequency (MHz) 900 (DDR3)
Standard memory configuration 1 GB (DDR3)
Memory interface 64-bit
Memory bandwidth (GB/s) 14. 4

With API support, the GeForce GT 520 is also not entirely smooth, but it’s not a frankly bad situation either. Only DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.1 and Nvidia Cuda are fully supported. Games or programs that require DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.2 or higher, Vulcan, and OpenCL 2.0 simply won’t work. Although games using DirectX 11 will also work frankly poorly, because the GT 520 simply does not have enough performance.

There is no Nvenc hardware encoder in the GeForce GT 520, so the video card will not be able to record gameplay from video without performance degradation. For streamers, this graphics adapter is completely useless.

Manufacturers GeForce GT 520

The main manufacturer of the GT 520 is nVidia, which produces reference models of the video card. These models have reference technical characteristics and component base. Although there are many other video card companies besides nVidia, although in the case of the GT 520 this list is very limited.

Gigabyte GeForce GT 520

Gigabyte offers 4 versions of the GT 520:

  1. GV-N520SL-1GI (1Gb, passive cooling)
  2. GV-N520TC-1GI (512Mb with Turbo cache up to 1Gb, active cooling)
  3. GV-N520D3-1GI (1Gb, active cooling)
  4. GV-N520OC-1GI (1Gb, active cooling, factory overclocked)

All listed video cards have standard connection interfaces: VGA, HDMI and DVI.

The GV-N520SL-1GI is a quiet version of the GT 520 with a passive cooling system in the form of an aluminum radiator. There are no fans, due to which the card does not make noise during operation. This option may be suitable for office work, but it is not recommended to load passive systems with games.

Gigabyte GT 520 Silent 1Gb (GV-N520SL-1GI)

GV-N520TC-1GI is a variant with active cooling and 512Mb of built-in video memory. This model is notable for the Turbo Cache system, which gets the missing memory up to 1 gigabyte from the RAM. Such solutions are relevant in cases where the video card does not use the fastest memory (in this case, DDR3). Therefore, without much damage to performance, it turns out to make the video adapter cheaper.

Versions GV-N520D3-1GI and GV-N520OC-1GI differ only in the presence of a slight overclocking in the second, the cooling system is the same, all other parameters (except for the chip frequency) are the same.

Gigabyte GT 520 OC

OC The version of the video card (GV-N520OC-1GI) released by Gigabyte has a small factory overclock and an upgraded cooling system. But do not rely on factory overclocking: the increase in the frequency of the graphics chip, accomplished by the company’s engineers, is at a microscopic level, which is why a simple user will never be able to notice an increase in performance.

Zotac GeForce GT 520

But Zotac has made a good upgrade to the graphics adapter. First, a good active cooling system was installed. Secondly, the manufacturer did not cut the amount of video memory, which made it possible to correct one of the weaknesses of the GT 520. Thirdly, the frequency of the video memory was increased. Alas, even such cardinal changes did not make a gaming solution out of the video card.

GPU clock speed 810MHz
Memory frequency 1600MHz
Video memory size 1024 Mb
Interfaces DVI-D, HDMI, VGA
Power input 29W
Size 68.9mm X 167.64mm

Palit GeForce GT 520

Palit has released a rather controversial solution to the market. The cooling system is slightly worse than in other GT 520 models. But the video memory was overclocked.

Comparison with other graphics cards

The next-generation graphics card of the same performance is the GeForce GT 610. Not only do these solutions have very similar technical specifications, but also the overall external design of the graphics card.

The GeForce GT 420 is considered to be the previous generation video card, approximately similar to the GT 520. The graphics adapter has lower chip and memory frequencies, the data bus width remains the same. GeForce GT 430 will already be much more powerful.

AMD’s direct competitor is the Radeon HD 6450. Both graphics adapters are roughly the same price, although the Radeon HD 6450 wins somewhat in terms of performance.

Overclocking GT 520

The GeForce GT 520 is pretty bad with manual overclocking. Despite the presence of unlocked chip and memory multipliers, it will not be possible to seriously raise the frequencies even with all the desire. This is affected by a terrible power system and a budget cooling system. Even a small overclocking can lead to unpredictable consequences.

If you do decide to overclock, you will first need to replace the standard cooling system with something more impressive. But there is no point in this action, it will be cheaper to buy a new video card.

Tests in benchmarks and games

As a test bench, a system based on an Intel Core i7 980X, 8GB of RAM and a GeForce GT 520 graphics card was assembled. The graphics adapter is the weakest point in the entire system, so the processor and RAM will not limit its performance.

3DMark Vantage

In the popular 3DMark Vantage benchmark, the video card managed to score only 2034 points. The competitor from AMD (HD 6450) significantly outperformed the GT 520, scoring an additional 300 points, which looks like an impressive gain against the general background.

Tessmark 0.2.2

But in the Tessmark benchmark, which tests the performance of video cards in applications using OpenGL, the GeForce GT 520 took the lead. This is not surprising, since Radeon graphics cards have always had problems with OpenGL.

Crysis Warhead

Such a heavyweight as Crysis Warhead at maximum settings in any resolution was not given to our video card. The frame rate is consistently around 5-7 fps. This is not even close to be called sufficient for at least some kind of game.

GT 520 — makes sense?

GeForce GT 520 can only be used as a «plug» for the PCI-E slot, since the video card has very sad technical characteristics and terrible performance. Despite the support for DirectX 11, it will not be used, because games that support this API simply will not run at an acceptable frame rate.

If you don’t have integrated graphics in your processor, you can install a GT 520. Otherwise, it makes little sense.

We continue to acquaint our readers with video cards designed for installation in a small multimedia computer or HTPC, and today our test lab received a budget graphics accelerator from Palit based on NVIDIA GeForce GT 520. Among its differences from similar solutions from other manufacturers are: allocate increased video memory to 2 GB, an alternative design of the printed circuit board and a proprietary cooling system. Today we will try to find out if there is any point in a large amount of memory for a video accelerator on the GeForce GT 520, given its extremely low performance in gaming applications, and also to explore other features of the solution. From the data in the table it follows that, despite the fact that the amount of memory on Palit GeForce GT 520 2GB (2048MB DDR3) has increased significantly compared to The «reference» NVIDIA GeForce GT 520, the effective clock frequency of the chips used was lowered from 1800 to 1070 MHz, which should not have the best effect on the performance of the video card. The remaining characteristics of the solution under consideration generally coincide with the reference sample. This also applies to the frequency of the GPU and the set of interfaces used to display the image. Well, we’ll talk more about performance, a proprietary cooling system and an alternative PCB design a little later in the relevant parts of the review, but for now let’s get acquainted with the product packaging.

Graphics accelerator Palit GeForce GT 520 2GB (2048MB DDR3) comes in a small but colorful box. Its design with the image of the «graphic engine» is quite familiar to the products of the Taiwanese company Palit. On the front side of the package, the manufacturer indicates the amount of video memory used and lists the main technologies supported by the video card.

There is not much space on the back side, so the packaging designers have only posted here a brief list of product features in 12 languages and listed the main requirements for the system in which the Palit GeForce GT 520 2GB is planned to be installed. Note that the developer recommends using a power supply with a power of at least 300 W and capable of delivering at least 18 A along the + 12V line. However, in our opinion, in this case, Palit engineers are clearly playing it safe, because the Palit GeForce GT 520 2 GB video card itself consumes no more than 29W at maximum load.

The delivery package of the Palit GeForce GT 520 2GB (2048MB DDR3) video accelerator is very modest and consists only of a disk with drivers and utilities, as well as instructions for installation and operation. Unfortunately, this set of accessories lacks at least one low-profile plug that would allow installing the Palit GeForce GT 520 2 GB in the most compact HTPC cases. In our opinion, this is a very unfortunate omission for a solution of this class, which can cause significant inconvenience to potential buyers.

The user can use the DVI, VGA or HDMI interface to display the image from the video card on the screen of a monitor, plasma panel, TV or projector. The vast majority of owners will be able to connect the necessary device to the video card to display an image without using additional adapters, which, moreover, would slightly increase the cost.

The low-profile printed circuit board of the Palit GeForce GT 520 2GB (2048MB DDR3) video card is made on a dark brown textolite. The use of twice the amount of video memory in comparison with the «reference» did not significantly affect the design of the printed circuit board and the arrangement of elements on it, however, differences from the reference design are noticeable even to the naked eye. Note that the power stabilization system includes two phases (one for the graphics core and one for memory chips), which should be quite enough for a low-end product. Connectors for connecting additional power or connecting an SLI bridge are quite naturally absent, taking into account that the Palit GeForce GT 520 2 GB video card is positioned by the manufacturer as a compact and energy-efficient solution for HTPCs and home PCs that are not focused on gaming.

For better cooling of the PCB elements, Palit engineers chose to leave the back of the PCB almost empty.

The central part of the Palit GeForce GT 520 2GB (2048MB DDR3) is the NVIDIA GF119 (Fermi) graphics chip, made according to the 40 nm process technology. Recall that it includes 48 universal shader processors (or CUDA cores) and 8 rasterization units, and data exchange with memory is carried out via a 64-bit wide bus. The rest of its characteristics are shown in the screenshot above.

As we noted above, the amount of video memory increased to 2 GB is one of the key features of the video card in question. The memory is typed using 8 chips of 256 MB marked EDJ2108BCSE-DJ-F. The microcircuits are manufactured by the well-known Japanese company Elpida and, according to the documentation, have a nominal effective frequency of 1333 MHz. Recall that on the Palit GeForce GT 520 2GB (2048MB DDR3) video card, the memory frequency is significantly underestimated and amounts to 1070 instead of 1600 MHz, recommended by the GPU manufacturer. Well, given that the microchips used have some potential for overclocking, we will try to check whether it is possible to speed them up in the process of manual “overclocking” and get some performance boost.

The cooling system of the Palit GeForce GT 520 2 GB graphics accelerator is very compact and consists of a small aluminum heatsink with a built-in fan that contacts the graphics core through a thin layer of thermal interface.

Using the example of the ASUS GeForce GT 520 SILENT video card, we made sure that a passive radiator is enough to cool the NVIDIA GF119 graphics chip, but the use of a fanless cooler negatively affects the size of the accelerator as a whole, which can be a drawback for owners of miniature cases. In addition, the use of a low-speed fan for the Palit GeForce GT 520 2 GB cooling system should not cause discomfort during operation even for lovers of silence.

To evaluate the efficiency of the cooling system used, we ran our standard set of tests using the FurMark utility. We conducted them in two cooler operation modes: automatic control and maximum fan speed.

In automatic mode, with a continuous maximum load, the temperature of the graphics core did not exceed 69 degrees, which is a good result. At the same time, the fan worked at 54% of its power, producing an almost imperceptible noise level.

After we set the fan speed to maximum and tested again, surprisingly, we did not see a decrease in the maximum temperature of the GPU, however, the noise level emitted by the cooler remained practically unchanged. Most likely, using the software to control the fan speed on this video card will not work.

When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically lowered, resulting in lower power consumption and heat generation. The cooler in this mode works almost silently.

Well, as we saw in the course of testing, the use of an active cooling system for solutions based on NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 looks quite justified. On the one hand, the active cooler used for the Palit GeForce GT 520 2GB (2048MB DDR3) allows you to install a video card in almost any, even the cramped modern HTPC case, without fear of overheating, and on the other hand, you can hardly hear the cooler in operation, which, of course, will delight lovers of silence.

Fuck these sofa ANALYSTS, don’t spoil your mood. Although sometimes you are stupid in the details of electronics. For that, you talk beautifully and it’s nice to hear about pleasant things))

Don’t drive Anal itik. I passed the LL metro on the e8400 without overclocking and the 550ti card is always loaded at 90-100%, with a comfortable 50-60fps. This is to the fact that 520 is enough.

I had 80-120 fps with this card in wot on 8 cores, at low ones, but with core2duo e7300 it rarely reaches 60, even played 25-30 fps in rust
