In spite of everything, Intel continues to follow the declared tick-tock development model, and in the first days of June, an official announcement of a new generation of processors took place. The fourth, already in a row, generation of Intel Core CPUs belongs to the “so” cycle, which in turn means an architecture update. So Haswell (its name) should potentially bring something new to the structure of the processor. It is also worth noting that a prerequisite in this development approach is the preservation of the existing technological process, which currently corresponds to 22 nm.

The official presentation of the processors took place the other day, but the world wide web is already heavily dotted with various information regarding some of the features of the new products. This is due to the fact that the presentation of the Haswell architecture itself took place earlier at the traditional IDF 2012 event. Before starting a detailed acquaintance with the existing test sample, we invite you to get acquainted with the innovations.

The presentation materials initially create a general impression that the new generation of processors is focused more on all kinds of portable equipment (ultrabooks, convertible laptops, etc.). This emphasis is associated with the current trend in the development of computer technology. Recent years have shown that buyers show the most active interest in various types of compact devices, which for the most part are the daily companions of the owner in everyday life. And we all remember that the most acute issue in such cases is the duration of battery life, because most often when using such devices there is no fixed connection to the electrical network. So energy efficiency has become a key parameter that has captured the attention of developers, although we note right away that it has not become the only one.

Before starting to get acquainted with the changes in the architecture, we suggest that you take a look and compare the structure of the kernel itself. As you can see, the developers left the maximum number of cores at the same level, which is not surprising. Such a decision is quite justified, because four cores are quite enough to process most tasks, especially when you consider that, if necessary, when using the «top» CPUs of the Intel Core i7 family, 4 cores can process 8 threads. After examining these images, the identity of the architectures in appearance is striking. The layout of the cores and main blocks remained the same, as did the number of transistors per chip. The only difference between them is the area, which has increased by 17 square meters. mm. Similar to the Ivy Bridge architecture, the transistors have a three-dimensional design (Tri-Gate), which ensures their small physical size and minimizes leakage currents.

Another innovation was the emergence of new solutions that combine the processor, integrated graphics and chipset. Thus, the trend of development of all-in-one devices has found its way out. Of course, in this case, the negative point is the lack of system scalability, however, given that such an approach will be used for ultra-thin devices, this fact is not so critical.

In addition to the implementation of combining on just one substrate, such solutions have added another set of processor states — S0ix. The main goal pursued in this set is to minimize power consumption at times of low load. So, for example, when performing elementary actions that do not require significant resources, there is a shutdown, up to a complete blackout, of unused modules even inside the processor cores themselves. Ultimately, according to the developers, this gives up to 20% savings in idle mode, although the system is fully active and in the C0 state. The developers have found that this approach is more efficient than lowering the frequency or voltage.

As for traditional desktop systems, everything has remained the same. Already the classic dual-chip (CPU + Chipset) approach remains relevant, although once again there has been a change in TDP values. Also new is support for an extended set of AVX2 vector instructions that accelerate cryptography, hashing, and multimedia processing. This set of instructions includes 256-bit SIMD instructions for processing integers, including when performing memory operations (permutations and shifts of vector components). The main hopes are placed on the FMA instructions for working with real numbers, which include a couple of operations, namely multiplication and addition. In order to speed up their implementation, the developers provided two separate ports and allocated executive devices. So CPUs based on the Haswell architecture can execute two dual FMA instructions per clock.

To ensure a balanced solution, the engineers had to make some adjustments to the operation of the cache memory, namely, to increase the bandwidth. After all, in order for new commands to really bring a performance boost, it is necessary to provide almost twice as much data to be processed. Thus, the first-level cache can already process two 32-byte parts of data per clock when reading and one 32-byte part when writing. Ultimately, this allows us to hope for a twofold increase in performance when working with the cache. As for the cache memory of the third level, it remained unchanged.

We see that the new architecture, if we consider its traditional desktop version, is largely similar to its predecessors. In general, we do not observe cardinal changes, while all additional innovations are more in the nature of optimizing existing developments. Naturally, we can expect a higher level of performance of the new generation of processors, but this will be possible, rather, due to the use of new instructions, i.e. use of optimized applications, rather than through the direct growth of computing capabilities.

Along with the developments of the new architecture, we offer a look at the features and modifications of the redesigned graphics core. The Haswell architecture brought the following innovations: almost all models of the Intel Core i5 / i7 CPU families use the Intel HD Graphics 4600 video core. It contains 20 unified shader processors, two rasterizers and four texture units. A distinctive feature of the new generation video accelerator is compatibility with DirectX 11.1. In addition, support for API OpenCL 1.2 and DirectCompute 5.0 has been preserved, which gives an increase in non-graphical calculations. Also, in the new generation of iGPU, it becomes possible to display images on 3 monitors, and the Quick Sync hardware decoding unit, which is included in it, is able to provide an increase in the speed of video content processing. We also note that the developers have introduced a new system for classifying graphics adapters, which will help to distinguish between the possibilities of a particular solution.

Unfortunately, desktop systems will be limited, so in them we will most often see graphics adapters of the GT1 and GT2 levels. So GT1 video accelerators have 6 unified shader processors and are more reminiscent of the existing Intel HD Graphics graphics cores. GT2 is a new generation of Intel HD Graphics 4600 adapters. As for GT3 and GT3e, these modifications of the graphics core are focused on mobile solutions.

If the GT3-level graphics core is a more productive option, in which the number of shader processors and related units is increased by 2 times, then the GT3e will also have a fast 128 MB eDRAM memory, as well as 512-bit data bus. After all, we all know that the bottleneck in any integrated graphics is that RAM is used to store data, which is slower than the core.

Therefore, we can justifiably hope for a really tangible increase in the performance of the graphics core, as evidenced by a series of tests conducted by the manufacturer.

Of course, we can’t ignore the new system logic chips. The eighth series of chipsets, as we have already said, retained their single-chip layout and somewhat expanded their functionality.

As you can see from the comparison table, the changes are mostly cosmetic. While maintaining the total number of SATA and USB ports, the number of USB 3.0 connection interfaces has increased to 6, and all SATA ports have become compatible with SATA 6 Gb / s. Also in the new chipsets, the xHCI (eXtended Host Controller Intarface) controller is already fully used. It provides advanced control over the transfer of data between the motherboard and peripherals.

Another change in the new platform, which will please overlockers, is the expansion of tools for overclocking the processor. By analogy with the one successfully proven in the Socket LGA2011 platform, an additional multiplier has appeared, which will provide an increase in BCLK to 125/167 MHz without losing the stability of DMI and PCI Express bus controllers at higher frequencies. After all, they were the main reasons for the low overclocking potential of previous generations of CPUs.

One way or another, but at the moment the model range of processors for desktop PCs is represented by the following options. According to the already established tradition, first of all, the company’s representatives announced high-performance CPUs of the Intel Core i5/i7 families. Among them, any buyer is able to find a solution in accordance with their needs, whether it is for the purpose of assembling an economical system or one focused on serious overclocking.

In this material, we will get acquainted with the processor Intel Core i5-4670K . As you may have guessed, it has an unlocked multiplier and is suitable for overlock enthusiasts.

Appearance and Layout

Retail packaging of a boxed CPU should have the layout shown above, which, as usual, is complemented by an indication on the front of the information about which particular model is inside. In addition, on one of the sides there must be a sticker with all the necessary barcodes and brief technical specifications. We draw such conclusions solely on the basis of the general trend of the company’s solutions supplied to the market.

Inside the retail package will be: processor, cooler, warranty, user manual and company sticker. In our case, an engineering sample is being tested, so, unfortunately, we cannot yet be sure of the design of the packaging and its configuration.

A retail copy of the Intel Core i5-4670K processor cover should have a primary marking to help identify the model. It should also report the nominal frequency of the CPU. In our case, only the clock frequency and the place of production are clearly indicated — Malaysia.

You can see that the back of the processor is quite different from its predecessor. The number of elements that are placed on the outer part has been significantly reduced. Please note that the new Intel Socket LGA1150 is not compatible with LGA1155.

These specifications are announced and, in general, are impressive, although if you look closely, for the most part they resemble the Intel Core i5-3570K model. We see that a sufficiently high clock speed and the presence of four physical cores can satisfy the needs of very demanding customers. Given that the multiplier is unlocked, one can hope for a decent overclocking potential, which will ultimately provide even greater performance.

As for the main characteristics of the tested processor, the CPU-Z utility confirms these specifications.

According to her testimony, we see that the processor is made using 22 nm technology, the core voltage is 1.085 V. The processor clock frequency at the time of reading was 3405 MHz, i.e. approximately corresponds to the base value of 3.4 GHz.

Like any other solution related to the Intel Core i5 range, this CPU has Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology to its credit. When activated, the CPU frequency rises to 3.8 GHz when the load is applied to the CPU.

The most interesting nuance becomes clear when the system is idle. Surprisingly, the clock speed drops to 800 MHz and this is no joke, while the voltage drops to 0.68 V. So we can expect that systems based on new products will be even more economical in case of downtime .

The CPU cache is distributed similarly to both Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge solutions. 64 KB of L1 cache per core, of which 32 KB is for data caching and the same amount for instructions, 256 KB of L2 cache per core, and L3 cache is common to the entire processor, and its volume equals 6 MB. Despite the fact that we do not see external signs of changes in this case, however, we remember that the throughput of the L1 and L2 cache memory has increased, so let’s look at the performance measurement results.

Dual channel DDR3 memory controller capable of supporting both DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600 memory. We will perform testing by setting the frequency of the modules to the maximum level, which is declared by the manufacturer.

As already mentioned in the specification, the Intel Core i5-4670K processor is equipped with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 graphics core. HD Graphics 3000 and 16 — Intel HD Graphics 4000.

At the time of taking the readings, the frequency of the video core was 600 MHz, but when solving serious problems, this figure increases to 1200 MHz. Given the innovations that have occurred with integrated graphics, it can be expected that it will provide a wider range of tasks than the Intel HD Graphics 4000.

Intel Core i5-4670 processor overview

The processor was released in 2013 for motherboards with Socket LGA 1150. The model belongs to the CPU of medium performance in the line of the fourth generation of Intel Core processors, has 4 cores without logical division with frequencies of 3400-3600 MHz and heat dissipation of 84W, which will require an efficient cooling system (up to 95W). The Intel Core i5-4670 is made according to the technological standards of 22nm and carries the Haswell architecture.
