Core 2 Quad Q9400 — 15 years later

This content was written by a website visitor and has been rewarded.

Introduction

So, we continue to explore the possibilities of the first 4-core x86 desktop processors in today’s applications and games. Let me remind you briefly that the main goal of the study is to see what multi-core “oldies” can do in modern applications and games in comparison with their current successors. So far, only representatives of the Core 2 Quad line from Intel have acted as processors from the past, and the Core i3-10100 has been chosen as a competitor from our days for them.

We started our review with the first mass-produced 4-core x86 desktop processor, the Core 2 Quad Q6600, and in the last one we got to the 45nm Core 2 Quad Q8300. Today we’ll take it one step further and test the Core 2 Quad Q9400, which outperforms the Q8300 not only in terms of frequency, but also in terms of cache memory. It was also decided to expand the representation of current processors in the study by adding the «hyperstump» Pentium Gold G6405 to it. Unlike many 2-core processors of the past, this processor has a high single-threaded performance, which, coupled with the presence of virtual multithreading, makes the Pentium Gold G6405 minimally suitable for many modern applications and games. And as a competitor to the 4-core processors of the past, it fits better — the Core i3-10100 is still too strong.

A brief description of the test benches and testing methodology is given below under the spoilers.

Test Method

Performance will be compared in a modern software environment using the latest (as far as possible) versions of the tested applications and games. Similarly, with Windows — both test benches were installed «fresh» Windows 11, version 22h3. Here it could be argued that the use of modern software puts test participants in not quite equal conditions, because the current versions of applications and games can most likely use instruction sets that are not available from the «oldies». As a result, more up-to-date processors will get an additional, allegedly unfair advantage from using SSE4 and AVX instructions. But I think otherwise: the new instruction sets are one of the microarchitectural improvements, which is essentially no different from higher clock speeds or larger amounts of cache memory. In the end, all these kits appeared for a reason, and the transistor budget for their support was not spent for fun.

The only pity is that in many cases it will not be possible to use the most modern software in tests, since support for instruction sets that are missing from the «oldies» has already become mandatory in many places. In particular, this, of course, applies to games, but many current versions of non-gaming software are no longer so easy or even impossible to run on old processors. Nevertheless, we managed to type a small list of quite up-to-date software:

  • AIDA64 and Geekbench 5 were chosen for synthetic tests. Of the first, however, we will use only tests of memory speed characteristics, since I like benchmarks of processor speed in Geekbench 5 more.
  • Some general PC performance will be measured using PCMark 10.
  • Cinebench R23, Photoshop 2020, Premiere Pro 2022, 7-Zip 22, Blender 3.3, HandBrake 1.5, NAMD 2, Python 3.9 will be used as real non-gaming software.
  • And finally, the games will be represented by Grand Theft Auto V, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Hitman 2, Metro Exodus, Total War: Three Kingdoms, Borderlands 3, F1 2020 projects.

We will test games exclusively in HD resolution and (where, of course, where there is a choice) using modern APIs (for example, DirectX 12).

Core 2 Quad Q9400

And now let’s take a closer look at another representative of the «old guard», participating in our today’s testing. Let me remind you that in 2008, in accordance with the microprocessor development strategy known as «tick-tock», Intel released updated Core 2 Quad based on the Penryn microarchitecture, the main difference from the original Core microarchitecture was the use of a thinner 45-nm process technology. Ordinary (non-Extreme) 45nm 4-core Core 2s came out in 3 variants at once, differing primarily in the size of the second-level cache: Q8xxx had only 2 MB of L2 cache for each pair of cores, Q9x0x already boasted 3 MB, and Q9x5x — as much as 6 MB. We have already tested the most stripped-down variant in the face of the Q8300, and today we will look at the variant with 3 MB of L2 cache for each pair of cores, namely the Q9400.

In addition to the larger cache memory, the Core 2 Quad Q9400 also has a slightly higher frequency — 2.67 GHz versus 2.5 GHz for the Q8300. Otherwise, the processors are identical.

Overclocking the Core 2 Quad Q9400 did not bring any surprises — as in the case of the Q8300, the processor turned out to be completely stable at a system bus frequency of 500 MHz. True, due to a slightly higher multiplier (8 vs. 7.5) Q9400 reached 4GHz, which is a reasonable limit for most 45nm Yorkfield chips.

And now let’s finally see what a little more cache and a little higher frequencies will give in modern applications and games.

Testing: Synthetic and Comprehensive Tests

AIDA64 Memory Bandwidth & Latency

Memory performance is almost the same as the Q8300. This is not surprising, because the system bus and memory frequencies are identical. And yes, up to modern processors, in terms of all speed indicators of memory, old Quads are «as far as the moon.»

Geekbench 5

In the Geekbench 5 Core 2 Quad synthetic test suite, the Q9400 slightly breaks away from the Q8300 due to the higher frequency. The Core i3-10100 is still unattainable, but the Q9400’s «hyperstump» in terms of multi-core performance is not so far away — the Pentium G6405 is only a third faster. After all, real cores are not a match for virtual ones, so the «hyperstump», which outperforms the Q9400 in overclocking by almost a factor of two in single-core performance, is already losing a lot in multi-core tests.

PCMark 10

In the comprehensive PCMark 10 test, there is also only a slight difference between the Core 2 Quad Q9400 and Q8300. Modern processors are again noticeably ahead, however, in tests of professional content creation software (Digital Content Creation, DCC), we again see a noticeable subsidence of the Pentium G6405. Virtual threads are not capable of replacing physical cores. However, even in this group of tests, the «hyperstump» is 35% faster than the Core 2 Quad Q9400.

Testing: professional software

Cinebench R23

Moving on to real software, and in the popular Cinebench benchmark, the overclocked Q9400 is already breathing «hyperstump» into the back of the head — the Pentium G6405 is the fastest by 14%! Core i3-10100, of course, is still out of reach, but to impose a fight on the «hyperstump» is already a good achievement.

Photoshop 2020

Premiere Pro 2022

software, one could conclude that the Core 2 Quad Q9400 (overclocked to 4 GHz) is not so bad. However, already in Adobe products we see a different picture — here the «hyperstump» is faster than the overclocked Q9400 by an impressive 53% and 38%, respectively. In Adobe products, single-core performance is still important, and Quads are doing poorly with it — age makes itself felt. However, such a picture for professional software is more an exception than a rule — in its mass, it still scales well to a large number of cores / threads, and physical cores are always better than virtual threads.

Visual Studio 2022

The last time we observed the noticeably longer Blender compilation time in Visual Studio in the Q8300 compared to the Q6600, we assumed that we ran into a corny amount of cache memory. And judging by the results of the Q9400, we were right. Here, as already mentioned, there are no surprises — very often the build speed rests precisely on the amount of cache memory, so a higher core frequency and other advantages are insignificant. If we talk about rivalry with the «hyperstump», then in this test the Pentium G6405 is faster than the overclocked Q9400 by 30%.

7-Zip 22

Data compression «likes» more real, physical, rather than virtual cores, so here the Q9400 gets a little closer to the «hyperpip» — the Pentium G6405 is faster than the overclocked Q9400 by 2 4%.

Blender 3.3

But in Blender, on the contrary, the «hyperstump» margin is somewhat larger — the Pentium G6405 is faster than the overclocked Q9400 by 36%.

HandBrake 1.5

The Handbrake Core 2 Quad Q9400 coped with H.265 video encoding only a little slower than the «hyperstump» — in comparison with the overclocked Q9400, the Pentium G6405 finished only 16% faster.

NAMD 2

The Q9400 coped with the task of classical molecular dynamics in NAMD 2 Core 2 Quad even faster — here the Pentium G6405 is ahead of the overclocked Q9400 by only 9%.

Python 3.9

And finally, matrix calculations in multi-threaded mode in Python 3. Here is an overclocked Core 2 Quad Q9400 generally managed to catch up with the «hyperstump» — the advantage of the latter is purely nominal, a couple of percent.

On average, in the tested set of professional software Pentium G6405 outperformed the Core 2 Quad Q9400 overclocked to 4 GHz by only about 20%. In stock, of course, the gap is more significant, more than 50%, but after all, the stock frequencies of the «oldies» are much lower than those of modern processors. A real modern 4-core processor (Core i3-10100) does not leave the Q9400 any chance, ahead of the «old man» even in overclocking to 4 GHz by an impressive 70%. Well, the advantage of the Core i3-10100 over the stock Core 2 Quad Q9400 is generally double.

Testing: games

Grand Theft Auto V (2015, RAGE, DirectX 11)

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI (2016, native, DirectX 12)

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018, Foundation, DirectX 12)

Hitman 2 (2018, Glacier 2, DirectX 12)

Metro Exodus (2019, 4A Engine, DirectX 12)

Total War: Three Kingdoms (2019, TW Engine 3, DirectX 11)

Borderlands 3 (2019, Unreal Engine 4, DirectX 12)

F1 2020 (2020, EGO, DirectX 12)

Geometric mean results

The results in individual gaming tests are hidden under spoilers, as they show a generally identical picture with the exception of only Civilization VI, where the Core 2 Quad Q9400 overclocked to 4 GHz is able to impose a fight on the Pentium G64 05. In the rest of the projects and, as a result, the «average for the hospital» «hyperstump» is twice as fast as the overclocked Q9400, both in terms of average and minimal gaming performance. The superiority of the Pentium G6405 over the stock Q9400 is even higher — more than 50% in professional software and 160-170% in games. Well, the fight against the i3-10100, as has been said repeatedly, is out of the question.

Conclusions

The epoch of quads is definitely over, and ended a long time ago. At the moment, even when overclocked to 4 GHz, these processors are not able to compete even with a 2-core 4-thread «hyperstack», and not the most relevant one. Yes, in professional software the Pentium G6405 outperformed the Core 2 Quad Q9400 overclocked to 4 GHz by only 20% on average, but no one in their right mind would use these processors for professional tasks. Slight lag of overclocked Q9400 from the «hyperstump» in these tests, therefore, has a small, rather purely theoretical, rather than practical value. But in gaming projects, the Core 2 Quad Q9400 lags behind the Pentium G6405 by a factor of two. Yes, single-core performance is still important in games, which is too low for Core 2 Quad representatives due to their age. And it is in our list of tested games that we still do not have the most modern projects that are not launched at all on Quads due to their lack of support for various newfangled instructions.

On the other hand, (comparatively) modern games that run on the Core 2 Quad Q9400 are quite playable if the latter is overclocked to 4 GHz. At a minimum, they are playable «at the minimum» — 70 FPS on average and a little less than 40 FPS in rare cases. It is clear that it is simply pointless to assemble a system even (conditionally) «for a summer residence» on the LGA 775 «from scratch» now — good boards cost so inadequate money that a «hyperpen» for a couple of thousand with Avito + the simplest LGA 1200 board and the most inexpensive DDR4 memory will not be much more expensive. But this is a completely different level of gaming comfort, modern interfaces, and even the possibility of an upgrade. But if an assembly with some Core 2 Duo is gathering dust somewhere, then it can still be “cheered up” for a penny by some Xeon, by assembling a “typewriter”, on which you can from time to time feel nostalgic for old games, as well as play something esports or even relatively new. In the latter case, however, «at the minimum wage», and only in those projects that will be launched, but nonetheless.
