Our regular readers most likely remember that on May 22, Intel updated its lineup of processors based on the Sandy Bridge architecture. And now one of the “relatively new” processors came to us for testing — Intel Core i5-2310 . Let’s say right away that the tested CPU has a «little brother» in the person of Intel Core i5-2300 , which differs by an exceptionally lower clock speed of 100 MHz in standard mode. Despite the fact that processors with an updated graphics core to the level of Intel HD Graphics 3000 were released on May 22, the Intel Core i5-2310 is equipped with a less powerful Intel HD Graphics 2000 adapter. Well, we have a 4-core central processor with a nominal frequency of 2. 9GHz and 6 MB of cache, which belongs to the middle price category, and we begin to explore its capabilities.
Appearance and packaging
The box version of the processor is being tested. Externally, the packaging is no different from other second-generation Core i5 series processors, which, in general, is not surprising. On the front side, the TDP (95 W) and the processor model (Intel Core i5-2310) are specified.
There is a plastic transparent window on the top side of the packaging, which is designed to allow the buyer to verify the conformity of the processor.
On the right side there is a traditional sticker with some information from the processor specification: processor model (Intel Core i5-2310), processor clock speed (2.9 GHz), cache memory size (6 MB) , processor socket (LGA 1155), processor TDP (95 W), serial number and product code.
The package bundle of the processor is absolutely standard. All of its components are familiar to all of us: a processor, a cooling system, instructions for installing the processor, which also contains information about warranty obligations, and a branded sticker for a PC case indicating the family.
An important element of the boxed version of the processor is the complete cooling system. In our case, there is a fairly high-quality cooler marked E97378-001 manufactured by DELTA. Outwardly, it is no different from the cooling systems that are equipped with other members of the 4-core Sandy Bridge processor family. The cooler consists of a small cylindrical heatsink with aluminum fins branching out radially from a central copper heat sink. This radiator is cooled by a fan located on top and having blades with a sufficiently large angle of attack. A 4-pin power connector is used, which allows dynamic speed change using an economical PWM method.
The center heat sink is factory coated with thermal paste. Such a cooling system will be enough to operate the processor under any load, and the noise background will not cause discomfort.
There is a main marking on the Intel Core i5-2310 processor cover that helps to identify the model, and also informs its nominal frequency, cache memory size and power requirements.
On the back side of the processor we can see contacts for the LGA 1155 processor socket. Recall that there is no backward compatibility with the LGA 1156 processor socket, therefore, for successful operation of the CPU, you must use motherboards with a «native» socket.

All prices for Intel Core i5-2310
These specifications are fully verified by the CPU-Z utility. We see that the processor is made using 32 nm technology; the core voltage is 1.168 V. The processor clock speed at the time of reading was 2909.7 MHz, i.e. approximately declared 2.9 GHz.
The Intel Core i5-2310 processor L1 cache is 64 KB per core, of which 32 KB is for data caching and the same amount for instructions. Additionally, in the second block, space is allocated for the cache of decoded micro-operations. L2 cache has a capacity of 256 KB per core, and L3 is shared for the entire processor and its size is 6 MB.
The Intel Core i5-2310 dual-channel DDR3 memory controller is nominally capable of supporting DDR3-1066 and DDR3-1333 memory. If the owner will use the CPU in motherboards based on the Intel P67 or Z68 Express chipset, then the memory controller should work without problems with DDR3 modules at a frequency of up to 2400 MHz.

Overview and testing of the Intel Core i5-2310 processor. Page 1 » /> » /> .keyword { color: red; }
Test core i5 2310
Our regular readers most likely remember that on May 22, Intel updated its lineup of processors based on the Sandy Bridge architecture. Well, we have a 4-core central processor with a nominal frequency of 2.9GHz and 6 MB of cache, which belongs to the middle price category, and we begin to explore its capabilities.
Appearance and packaging
The box version of the processor is being tested. Externally, the packaging is no different from other second-generation Core i5 series processors, which, in general, is not surprising. On the front side, the TDP (95 W) and the processor model (Intel Core i5-2310) are specified.
There is a transparent plastic window on the top side of the package, which is intended for the buyer to verify the conformity of the processor.
On the right side there is a traditional sticker with some information from the processor specification: processor model (Intel Core i5-2310), processor clock speed (2.9 GHz), cache memory size (6 MB), processor socket ( LGA 1155), processor TDP (95 W), serial number and product code.
In our case, there is a fairly high-quality cooler marked E97378-001, manufactured by DELTA.
The surface of the central heat sink is factory-applied with thermal paste. Such a cooling system will be enough to operate the processor under any load, and the noise background will not cause discomfort.
The cover of the Intel Core i5-2310 has a main marking that helps to identify the model, as well as reports its nominal frequency, cache memory size and power requirements.
On the back side of the processor, we see contacts for the LGA 1155 processor socket. Recall that there is no backward compatibility with the LGA 1156 processor socket, therefore, for successful operation of the CPU, you must use motherboards with a «native» socket.
TDP 95 W and Intel Core i5-2310 processor model are specified on the front side.

Benchmarks Intel Core i5-2310
Speed in games
Performance in games and similar applications, according to our tests.
The performance of 4 cores, if any, and performance per core has the greatest impact on the result, since most games do not fully use more than 4 cores.
The speed of caches and working with RAM is also important.
Speed in office use
Performance in everyday work such as browsers and office applications.
The performance of 1 core has the greatest impact on the result, since most of these applications use only one, ignoring the rest.
Similarly, many professional applications such as various CADs ignore multi-threaded performance.
Speed in heavy applications
Performance in resource-intensive tasks loading a maximum of 8 cores.
The performance of all cores and their number have the greatest impact on the result, since most of these applications willingly use all the cores and increase the speed accordingly.
At the same time, certain periods of work can be demanding on the performance of one or two cores, for example, applying filters in the editor.
Data obtained from tests by users who tested their systems with and without overclocking. Thus, you see the average values corresponding to the processor.
Speed of numerical operations
Simple household tasks
Demanding games and tasks
Extreme load
Different tasks require different strengths of the CPU. A system with few fast cores and low memory latency will be fine for the vast majority of games, but will be inferior to a system with a lot of slow cores in a rendering scenario.
We believe that a minimum of 4/4 (4 physical cores and 4 threads) processor is suitable for a budget gaming PC. At the same time, some games can load it at 100%, slow down and freeze, and performing any tasks in the background will lead to a drop in FPS.
Ideally, the budget shopper should aim for a minimum of 4/8 and 6/6. A gamer with a big budget can choose between 6/12, 8/8 and 8/16. Processors with 10 and 12 cores can perform well in games with high frequency and fast memory, but are overkill for such tasks. Also, buying for the future is a dubious undertaking, since in a few years many slow cores may not provide sufficient gaming performance.
When choosing a processor for your work, consider how many cores your programs use. For example, photo and video editors can use 1-2 cores when working with filtering, and rendering or converting in the same editors already uses all threads.
Data obtained from tests by users who tested their systems both with overclocking (maximum value in the table) and without (minimum). A typical result is shown in the middle, the more filled in the color bar, the better the average result among all tested systems.
Benchmarks
Benchmarks were run on stock hardware, that is, without overclocking and with factory settings. Therefore, on overclocked systems, the points can noticeably differ upwards. Also, small performance changes may be due to the BIOS version.
