The considerable success of video cards based on the mass-produced AMD Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor today is an excellent incentive for manufacturers to develop a line of video accelerators based on its receiver, the Radeon HD 6670. So at the moment, the largest AMD partner manufacturers have several solutions in their assortment on the Radeon HD 6670, which differ in the design of the printed circuit board and cooling system, GPU operating frequencies, the amount and type of video memory used, and, of course, the price. nine0003

Today we will talk about the ASUS Radeon HD 6670 (EAH6670/DI/1GD3) video card, which differs from most similar solutions, primarily in the use of GDDDR3 memory. Also, this solution has a non-standard PCB design and an alternative cooling system, and on top of that, the price of ASUS Radeon HD 6670 (EAH6670/DI/1GD3) is approximately 20-25% lower than the price of similar products equipped with GDDR5 video memory. Today we will try to find out how justified such savings will be for users who choose an inexpensive gaming video card, but for now, let’s take a look at the more detailed characteristics of the solution in question (you can familiarize yourself with the architectural features of the Turks graphics core in one of our previous articles). nine0003

All prices for ASUS EAH6670/DI/1GD3

Specifications of ASUS Radeon HD 6670 (EAH6670/DI/1GD3), almost completely match the specifications of «reference» accelerators on AMD Radeon HD 6670, however, as we already mentioned, the tested video card is equipped with slower GDDR3 memory, and, therefore, we can assume that its performance level will be significantly lower. We will talk about this and other features of the video card under consideration a little later, but for now, let’s start our acquaintance with studying the product packaging. nine0003

The packaging of the ASUS Radeon HD 6670 video card is made in a familiar and recognizable style for ASUS graphics accelerators. Its front side is decorated with logos of technologies supported by the video card and indications of some of its characteristics. Particular attention is drawn to the large inscription «SuperAlloy Power», which indicates the use of a high-quality element base, which, according to the manufacturer, allows not only to obtain a longer service life and less heating of the printed circuit board elements, but also to increase the performance level by 15%. nine0003

On the back of the package, the manufacturer placed the main specifications of the video card in 12 languages, including Russian, a brief connection diagram for displays with various interfaces, as well as an advertising description of the key features of the video card.

The list of system requirements for the computer in which you plan to install ASUS Radeon HD 6670 is located on one of the sides of the package. The manufacturer recommends using a power supply with a capacity of at least 450 W, but given that the power consumption of the video card itself does not exceed 75 W, ASUS engineers are clearly playing it safe. nine0003

As it should be for a budget product, the ASUS Radeon HD 6670 (EAH6670/DI/1GD3) video card has a meager delivery package, consisting only of a driver disk and installation and operating instructions. Given the universal set of interfaces for displaying images and the absence of additional power connectors on the board, most users are unlikely to need additional accessories during the operation of the video card.

The user can use the DVI, VGA or HDMI interface to display the image from the video card on the screen of a monitor, plasma panel, TV or projector. The vast majority of users will be able to connect the necessary device to the video card to display an image without using additional adapters, which, moreover, would slightly increase the cost. nine0003

The ASUS Radeon HD 6670 (EAH6670/DI/1GD3) printed circuit board is made on red textolite. The design and arrangement of elements on it are generally the same as those for the «reference» sample, but with some differences. So, for example, ASUS engineers declare the use of a higher quality element base, which should ensure a long service life of the video card, less heat and more overclocking potential.

Just like the reference samples, the ASUS Radeon HD 6670 (EAH6670/DI/1GD3) video card is equipped with a 2+1-phase power stabilization system (for the graphics processor and video memory, respectively). As we mentioned above, the tested video card is not equipped with connectors for additional power, and, therefore, consumes no more than 75 watts in load mode. nine0003

On the reverse side of the board, in addition to the PWM controller of the power stabilization system, there is also half of the memory chips, which are devoid of any cooling.

In the case of the Radeon HD 6670 GPU, AMD does not provide multiple video adapters for joint graphics calculations using the CrossFireX bridge, and support for this technology is provided only at the software level.

The Turks graphics chip, made according to the 40 nm process technology, is the central part of the tested video card. It contains 480 unified shader processors and 8 rasterizers. The frequencies of the graphics core and memory are 800 MHz for the core and 1800 MHz (effective) for the video memory. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out via a 128-bit bus. The rest of the characteristics are shown in the screenshot above. nine0003

The graphics card uses 1 GB GDDR3 memory from Hynix, which is marked H5TQ1G63DFR-11C. According to the documentation, the sampling time is 1.1 ns, which corresponds to an effective frequency of 1800 MHz, which means that it is unlikely that it will be possible to significantly overclock the video memory on the ASUS Radeon HD 6670 (EAH6670/DI/1GD3).

The cooling system of the ASUS Radeon HD 6670 video card has a rather ordinary appearance. Under the plastic shroud with a built-in 80mm fan is a medium-sized aluminum heatsink that contacts the GPU through a thick layer of thermal paste. Memory chips and power elements of the power supply system do not have contact with the main radiator and are not equipped with additional cooling, which can adversely affect the overclocking potential of the solution. nine0003

To evaluate the efficiency of the cooling system used, we ran our standard set of tests using the FurMark utility. We conducted tests in two cooler operating modes: automatic control and maximum fan speed.

In automatic mode, with a long maximum load, the temperature of the graphics core did not exceed 66 degrees, which is a good result. At the same time, the fan worked at 64% of its power, producing an average noise level. nine0003

After we set the fan speed to maximum and tested again, we recorded a decrease in the maximum temperature of the GPU by 7 degrees, but the noise level emitted by the cooler increased slightly.

When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically lowered, resulting in lower power consumption and heat dissipation. The cooler in this mode works quite quietly.
