If you are with us for the first time or missed the previous materials of this cycle, then we briefly recall that AMD Ryzen 5 3400G received 4 cores in 8 threads with a base speed of 3700 MHz and dynamic overclocking to 4200 MHz. This time we didn’t overclock it. Who is interested in the topic of overclocking — welcome to one of the previous materials. Here we assume that you are too lazy or scared to do this, or maybe the budget fee does not allow.
The RAM controller is guaranteed to support DDR4-2933 modules in dual-channel mode. But if you’re lucky with overclocking, you can get even higher values.
The integrated video core Radeon RX Vega 11 received 704 stream processors with a clock frequency of 1400 MHz. It does not have its own memory, so it all depends on the speed and operating mode of the operative.
Now let’s go over the rest of the test bench configuration. Based on the board MSI B450M MORTAR MAX microATX format. Its audio subsystem is based on the Realtek ALC892 8-channel codec, and Chemicon audio capacitors are used in the harness. The entire audio path is electrically isolated from other components. The left and right audio channels are located on different layers of textolite to improve sound quality.
CPU cooling was assigned to the cooler Aerocool Verkho 5 Dark . Its fan is based on a hydraulic bearing with a claimed lifespan of 60,000 hours. For a cheaper plain bearing, this figure is usually 2 times lower. The noise level is in the range of 15-27 dBA. That is, it is a reliable and not too noisy solution.
For the iGPU test, the choice of RAM is very important. The 16 GB Series 9 kit helped us close this issue.0007 Team Group DARK Z Alpha with stylish aluminum heatsinks. At your request, we have reduced its frequency from 4000 to 3200 MHz. Thanks to the 2-channel mode, the bus width reached 128 bits and the throughput exceeded 51 GB / s. With one bar it would be 2 times less.
One terabyte 2.5-inch SSD PATRIOT P200 was not enough for the operating system and all games. I had to add PATRIOT BURST of a similar form factor, but with a capacity of 960 GB. During active work, the first was heated up to 40°C, and the second — up to 33°C.
«Platinum» power supply Seasonic FOCUS PX-650 pleased us not only with high power, quality and reliability, but also with ease of use. It uses a fully modular design and easy-to-stow cables. A total of four 8-pin PCIe connectors and ten SATA connectors are available, so you don’t deny yourself anything.
All of these components fit easily and comfortably into the RIOTORO CR400 . Although this is a budget option with an average price tag of about $ 50, it pleased with the ventilation holes on the bottom, front and top panels with dust filters. By the way, at the top there is one USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 and two audio ports for easy connection of peripherals and headphones.
All pieces of iron presented — it’s time to move on to the test.
Dota 2 can be run in Full HD at maximum speed if you are ready to put up with constant twitching of the video sequence. They made us nervous, so we took a step back in the settings to get a smooth and enjoyable gameplay. The average speed slightly fell short of the coveted 60 FPS, but this did not spoil the impression.
Fans of tank drifting and one-shots War Thunder will appreciate the comfortable gameplay with a high profile. There were no lags in the video sequence or delays in control. Only the indicator of very rare events is reduced to 35 frames / s, but this does not lead to discomfort.
World of Tanks can be run at a high preset if image quality is important to you. The average speed rises above 50 frames / s, but the statistics of very rare events around 24 FPS are slightly annoying. On a fast light tank, the gameplay doesn’t feel entirely pleasant and responsive, although you can still be very effective in combat in this mode.
For the sake of experiment we went down to the middle profile and exhaled with relief. The video sequence is completely smooth, it is very comfortable to aim and shoot. Yes, and the indicators rise by at least 36%. If you play with maximum efficiency for the result, then it is better at medium settings.
In ARK Survival Evolved there was a glitch in the menu: select and apply the minimum preset, but the game shows «Custom». Otherwise, everything is expected: the picture is ugly, like a reflection in the mirror after the holidays, friezes slip through and the average speed does not exceed 50 frames / s. But if you really want to, then you can play.
CS: GO in the heaviest mode Danger Zone flies at the minimum from the first minutes. The average frame rate exceeds 100 fps and the rest of the statistics do not spoil the impression of the game. There are no complaints about management either. Simpler maps will be even more fun.
The Quake Champions engine itself offered a low preset with a resolution scale of 67%. It ran perfectly, nothing buggy and did not interfere. The average speed again rose over a hundred FPS, and very rare events traditionally sank below 30 at the time of the death and rebirth of the hero.
If desired, the drawing scale can be increased to 100%. The comfort of the gameplay does not suffer from this. Yes, the average frame rate drops to 80 frames / s, but the ease of shooting and the smoothness of the video sequence remain at a high level.
I didn’t want to play regular PUBG on Vega 8 because of uncomfortable gameplay. On Vega 11, you can already run at a very low quality preset. Of course, the frame rate is not exorbitant, but without jamming and jelly control. You will definitely not be an easy victim for opponents.
In the comments you asked to add PUBG Lite — accept and sign. On the ultras, the stators slipped at first, and we immediately moved to the high profile. Everything was comfortable here. The statistics of rare and very rare events rose above 40 fps. For weak systems — must have!
The Fortnite engine offered a high graphics preset, but it was awkward to play. To begin with, we went down to the middle profile. The average speed almost reached the coveted 60 FPS, the video sequence became smoother, but occasionally there were slight lags.
To completely get rid of them, we switched to a low profile. The quality of the picture suffered, but the gameplay became completely enjoyable, without friezes and stators. For a multiplayer survival game, this is much more important. Experienced gamers by manual selection of settings will achieve an even better balance between the beauty and comfort of the video sequence.
Test and Review: AMD Ryzen 5 3400G — Fewer Changes Than Expected
Last year, Raven Ridge APUs proved to be a very worthy alternative if you needed to build an economical and inexpensive office computer. The combination of Zen processor and Vega graphics provides enough casualness for everyday scenarios. But what about new models in the form of AMD Ryzen 5 3400G? We will talk about this in the review. But since there are not so many changes, there are no surprises to be expected.
With the announcement of the Ryzen 3000 family, AMD also updated two of its APUs that combine Zen compute cores with Vega graphics. They are very attractive for building office PCs or for casual gamers. It seems that the appearance of new APUs can be welcomed, but there are not as many changes as we would like.
Newer AMD Matisse CPUs, such as the Ryzen 9 3900X or the «younger» Ryzen 5 3600, use the updated Zen 2 architecture, which allows AMD to compete with Intel on an equal footing. In the case of two APUs, you will have to be content with the Zen + architecture, so the differences from the Raven Ridge processors are very small. At the very least, the AMD Ryzen 5 3400G and AMD Ryzen 3 3200G are made on the more advanced 12LP process technology, and the clock speeds are higher.
AMD Ryzen 5 3400G operates at a base frequency of 3.7 GHz, in Boost mode it can reach 4.2 GHz, which is a good 300 MHz higher than its predecessor. In the case of the younger Ryzen 3 3200G, clock speeds have increased to 3.6 and 4.0 GHz, respectively. Both APUs are based on four Zen + cores, but only the older model has SMT support, which allows you to process eight threads simultaneously. We also note the dual-channel DDR4-2933 interface and the L3 cache cut down to 4 MB.
On the integrated graphics, we also get differences between the two models. Ryzen 5 uses Vega 11 graphics, the younger model uses Vega 8. In practice, we get a decrease in the number of stream processors from 704 to 512. In both cases, the GPU clock speeds are increased to 1.4 and 1.25 GHz, respectively. For predecessors, they were limited to 1.25 and 1.1 GHz. The TDP of both Picasso APUs is 65W. However, the thermal package can be reduced to 45 W if necessary.
