Overclocking Intel Pentium 4 630

Here’s my issue. I have a Intel Pentium 4 630 cpu, have done for a while now. Recently I purchased a GA-EP35-DS3l gigabyte motherboard, 2X2GB ddr2 1066mhz RAM and a 9800gtx nvidea gpu.
On my old motherboard (integrated video card) and RAM, I was able to overclock the CPU to over 3.7Ghz but chose to keep it at 3.6Ghz (240X15) for better stability.
However, since purchasing my new stuff, I am having problems. I have the lated F6a bios. I’ve tried various bios settings mainly what was recommended by the bios itself, but this resulted in the pc not starting up. So I chose to totally ignore bios recommendations and do it my way. This consisted of CPU power kept at default (1.337V) and every other setting was also defualt except for CPU FSB which I changed from 200mhz to 240mhz. Clicked save and exit and windows loads up. I ran OCCT on custom, infinate time and a mix of tests. This was definately stable.
The problem is, when I restart, it starts but then cuts off and restarts again but with default CPU FSB (200mhz). So I’m asking for any pointer, tips, anything I might be doing wrong, etc.
Please respond as simple and clear as you can (I’m not a total genious yet lol)

Good news, the CPU FSB is now sticking in the bios. So it is successfully overclocked at 3.6Ghz with the stock heatsink and fan at a stable condition. At idle it is at about 65 C and after running OCCT for a few hours on the CPU it’s at about 87 C.
Now all I want to do is overclock it more. I don’t really want to spend loads of money on new cooling stuff as if it gets too expensive I’ll just buy a new CPU. I’ve heard of people being able to get there P4 630’s to over 4.5Ghz
. But that is most likely to be with water cooling which at the moment is quite expensive. But people say they I could easily get mine to 4Ghz with the right cooling.
When I can afford it I’ll probably look at buying a Quad core CPU like this Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300.
If anyone has any views on this CPU or any other CPU’s that are around the same price and compatable with my GA-EP35-DS3L motherboard please reply.

Omahgawd 86c?!
Buy a new proc. Even a Celeron E1400 would be an upgrade (though you do have much better options available like the E8400)

Lol, yup, it’s a hot lil CPU. I really should take it down to about 70 C, but I’m hoping to get a new one before it frys itself. And it’s not like I can sell this feeble lil CPU on, probably get couple of quid for it on ebay lol.
The E8400 is more like the CPU I am looking for. What I am looking for is either a small cheap way to make my current CPU cooler and better.
Or go to the extreme (which will mean saving which equals more time) of buying a really good CPU.
I was actually thinking of going or a quad core CPU unless anyone has a good detailed reason not to. So at the moment the Q9300 is my favourite option.

Geez. Clock it 3.2. Drop voltage on it a tad. See it will go 1.30 volt at 3.2. My northwood would go 3.2 all day long .1 volt low with a pound of copper sitting on it’s head and a very very slow 92mm fan on it. You are talking crazy temperatures. I’ve never seen over 68 which is about where it it goes to the funeral home. They idle alot higher than newer cpu’s but they shouldn’t heat up as much under load. Overclock it entirely through bios.

i remember some pentium 4s have an overclock lock.. intel applied it to some of the pentium 4s so you cant go over 15% however i think they passed that…on my pentium 4 531 they did that… but not my core i7 860, or my pentium 4 630, or my dual Xeons.
..which are not mine actually… but yehh you should go for a core i5.. its expensive but well worth it… get out of the LGA 775s man… its dieing as a platform… go with LGA 1156 or 1366..
also… try getting a new cooler, or just getting better air flow… i have mine at 3.15 GHz..

this board is truly amazing! i took my e6300 to 3.4ghz with mushkin 1066 ram on the same board.
i cant help you with the P4 but if you can keep the temps cool then go go go
if youre editing or doing any «professional» stuff then go quad. gaming and talking in vent go dual core. not enough games support quad
any c2duo you get will be an improvement especially a overclocked one with the right gpu

Any cooling is better than stock cooling……and you are killing that CPU.
If you’re plan is to buy new hardware and throw that stuff away completely, then don’t spend a dime on anything for it.
I guess you could grab a real cooler that comes with 775/1156/1366 mounting hardware so you could at least keep that through the upgrade.

Even after disclosing the damage to it, you could probably sell the whole kit (CPU, board, RAM) for about $75-100 to put toward an upgrade.

Yea thread is old,
the P4 630 is a beast though, i took it to 4Ghz on stock volts. It was still slow though lol
